This study explored the ability to localize warmth sensations produced by radiant stimulation of the forearm. The subject’s task was to state on which side of a tactile reference line warmth was perceived. Percentage correct improved with increasing intensity of the radiation, as well as with increasing distance from the reference line. There appears to be an inverse relation between the ability to make spatial judgments and the degree of spatial summation. At low levels of stimulation, intensity and area both contribute heavily to the magnitude of a warmth sensation and spatial localization is poor; but with increasing level, area contributes less and less to sensation and localization is better.  相似文献

The possibility of spatial summation of conducted ??Ts (temperature decrements from the adapted skin temperature) was tested when the ??Ts were presented simultaneously and individually at symmetrical sites on either side of the body. The use of a signal detection rating method yielded data that indicate that spatial summation is complete (area and intensity trade reciprocally) for ??s near threshold and at clearly suprathreshold intensities of stimulation is invariant of the adapted skin temperature (AT), and the intensity of stimulation within the range of stimuli used (from as little as ?0.05?C to as much as ?1.25?C). In view of the characteristics ascribed to the thermosensory apparatus in humans, it is postulated that spatial summation occurs in the central nervous system.  相似文献

In two experiments, the integration over spatial extent in taste was investigated for threshold sensitivity to NaCl and for suprathreshold intensity perception of saltiness. The area of stimulation was doubled by adding either an ipsilateral or a bilateral stimulus. The two stimuli could be of equal or unequal intensity. The data showed that at threshold level a probability summation model applied to all bilateral and most of the ipsilateral stimulus combinations. Probability summation failed to predict detection probability when two stimuli with different intensities were presented at the same tongue side. For suprathreshold stimuli, the magnitude of the saltiness sensation as estimated by a line-length method depended on the level of stimulation. The possible peripheral interaction mechanisms and central factors contributing to the taste response were discussed.  相似文献

Magnitude estimations of the warmth aroused by radiant stimulation of the forehead showed that warmth obeys the psychophysical power law when the’ duration of the stimulus is relatively long (3 or 6 sec). When duration is short (0.25, 0.5. or 1 sec), however, warmth grows as a more complex function of irradiation. The family of psychophysical functions measured for the various durations can be used to generate the rules by which radiant intensity and duration trade to preserve constant warmth. These rules vary systematically from complete temporal summation (i.e., complete reciprocity) near threshold to less and less complete summation as warmth level increases. When, however, the stimulus is expressed as an equivalent change of temperature in the skin, there is no summation, only adaptation. It can be shown that temporal summation observed psychophysically must result from the heat-transfer properties of skin tissue.  相似文献

One thousand Hertz tones were presented at equal or unequal intensities to the two ears. In a binaural-summation experiment, the presentation of components was simultaneous, the auditory system integrated the components automatically, and the subjects judged the loudness of the unitary sensation. In two cognitive-summation experiments, the presentation of components was successive, and the subjects had to integrate the two sensations consciously to judge their "total loudness." Results of all three experiments are consistent with models of linear summation of "loudness," but the loudness scales differ in the two tasks: The scales that underlie binaural summation and cognitive summation are nonlinearly related. This outcome suggests two nested processes: First, the auditory system transduces stimulus energy to loudness sensations by means of a nonlinear function; second, tasks that require subjects to judge combinational relations between sensations may impose additional nonlinear transformations on the sensations before the latter are combined.  相似文献

Threshold measurement and matching procedures were used to determine the amount of temporal summation at threshold and suprathreshold levels of vibrotactile stimulation on the thenar eminence of the hand. The frequency of the stimulus was 25, 40, 80, or 200 Hz. At 25 Hz, temporal summation was absent at all intensity levels. Considerable amounts of temporal summation were observed for 80- and 200-Hz stimuli, although the effects decreased as a function of intensity. At 40 Hz, no temporal summation was observed at threshold, but above threshold, a small amount was observed at all intensity levels. The results support a duplex model of mechanoreception in which one of two receptor systems exhibits temporal summation.  相似文献

Reaction time (RT) to radiant heat applied to the forehead and to the back was found to decrease monotonically as a function of two variables: intensity (flux density) and areal extent of stimulation. Intensity and area can thus be traded one for the other to preserve a constant RT. It has previously been shown that intensity and area can be traded to preserve a constant degree of apparent warmth, as determined by magnitude estimation. RT and magnitude estimation therefore agree in showing that the warmth sense displays spatial summation, and both show that summation is very great. They also agree in showing that the foreheadés sensitivity greatly exceeds the backés, and the exact trading rules revealed by magnitude estimation and RT agree well at low and moderate intensities.  相似文献

How does context affect basic processes of sensory integration and the implicit psychophysical scales that underlie those processes? Five experiments examined how stimulus range and response regression determine characteristics of (a) psychophysical scales for loudness and (b) 3 kinds of intensity summation: binaural loudness summation, summation of loudness between tones widely spaced in frequency, and temporal loudness summation. Context affected the overt loudness scales in that smaller power-function exponents characterized larger versus smaller range of stimulation and characterized magnitude estimation versus magnitude production. More important, however, context simultaneously affected the degree of loudness integration as measured in terms of matching stimulus levels. Thus, stimulus range and scaling procedure influence not only overt response scales, but measures of underlying intensity processing.  相似文献

When all stimuli elicit the same taste quality, solutions preceded by a high concentration level are judged to be significantly less intense than solutions preceded by a low concentration level. After repetitious stimulation with a different tasting stimulus, the intensity of the present stimulus is overestimated. This phenomenon is called “successive contrast.” In the present study, the cumulative effects of three identical stimuli on the saltiness ratings for a test stimulus are investigated. The preceding stimuli are manipulated with regard to taste quality, saltiness intensity, total taste intensity, and complexity. Whether the size of the cumulative contrast effect is associated with the degree of dissimilarity between preceding stimuli and test stimulus, or with the saltiness or total taste intensity of the preceding stimuli, is investigated. The size of the contrast effect depends on the type of preceding stimulus, its intensity, and the type of test stimulus. No association was found with judgments of the degree of dissimilarity between the preceding stimuli and the test stimulus. For nonsalty preceding stimuli, the contrast effects are independent of concentration level. When the preceding stimuli taste at least partly salty, the total intensity appears to determine the size of the contrast for an unmixed salty test stimulus.  相似文献

Pain experience is conceptualized as a combination of stimulus sensations (e.g., aching) and emotional distress. In Experiment 1, less distress was reported to cold pressor stimulation by subjects first told about stimulus sensations than by subjects who were uninformed or were told about symptoms of bodily arousal (e.g., tension). Adding a pain warning to sensation information blocked distress reduction, presumably by eliciting an emotional interpretation of the stimulus. In Experiment 2, subjects attending only to hand sensations reported less distress than subjects attending to their bodies. This decrease in the power of the stimulus to provoke emotion is presumably mediated by a schema of hand sensations formed by attention. In Experiment 3, subjects attending to hand sensations early in the immersion and distracting themselves later reported the same low levels of distress as did subjects who attended to hand sensations throughout. Subjects distracted throughout and subjects attending to hand sensations later showed no distress reduction. Therefore, stimulus schematization must precede distress reduction. Implications for distress control are discussed.  相似文献

A model for visual intensity threshold discrimination is described. Simplified assumptions represent the main features of the visual afferent paths. Discriminative responses are selected centrally by a statistical decision procedure, limited by the noise level. Noise arises from the irreducible physical variability of light, from spontaneous firing, and from variations in transmission in the afferent paths, These variations will tend to be positively correlated. The model was simulated on a computer: it correctly predicts the form of the Weber function (the relation between difference threshold and background intensity) and the features of spatial and temporal “summation”. It also shows that the function relating the central effect of a stimulus to its physical intensity is unlikely to be logarithmic or a power function with a small exponent.  相似文献

The sensation of self-rotation induced by viewing a surround rotating about the observer's vertical axis (circular vection or CV) was investigated with equal-area stimuli located in either the central, the mid-peripheral, or the far-peripheral visual field. Magnitude estimation responses indicated greater CV with larger stimulus area, but no significant differences in CV sensations as a function of stimulus eccentricity. This pattern of results does not support the belief that CV is dominated by peripheral stimulation when equal-area stimuli are compared.  相似文献

Luminance difference thresholds (ΔI) were obtained by a successive and a simultaneous method of presenting the stimuli Spatial and temporal separation between the fields was the independent variable while other variables as stimulus size, luminance, retinal area of stimulation and duration were kept constant ΔI was less for simultaneously presented stimuli than for successively presented stimuli This was related to spatial and temporal interaction effects such that the greater the spatial interaction between simultaneously presented fields, the greater the discriminability while the greater the temporal interaction between successively presented fields, the less the sensitivity to luminance differences. It was suggested that the basis of the luminance discrimination may be different under conditions of temporal interaction than under conditions of spatial interaction between the fields.  相似文献

By means of a two-interval, forced-choice technique, absolute thresholds were obtained at several sites on the skin for short bursts of mechanical vibration. The difference between the energy required for a single vibrator, in dB, to reach threshold and the energy required for two vibrators presented successively to reach threshold was taken as the measure of probability summation. Spatial summation was computed as the difference between the energies required for threshold for the two vibrators presented successively and simultaneously. Both probability summation, 0.52 dB lowering in threshold, and spatial summation, 1.94 dB lowering in threshold, remained constant as a function of the distance between the two vibrators on the thigh. Similar amounts of summation were obtained unilaterally and bilaterally on the fingers. When the frequency of vibration was lowered to 9 Hz, no spatial summation was found. When the frequencies of vibration at the two test sites were different, 160 Hz at one locus, 360 Hz at the other locus, there was no spatial summation.  相似文献

Previous work (Verrillo, 1963, 1968) has shown that when measured as a change in absolute threshold, spatial summation occurs only at vibration frequencies above 40 Hz. The present study measured vibrotactile spatial summation at suprathreshold amplitudes. A matching task was used to investigate the effect of varying contactor size on sensory magnitude at three different vibration frequencies. Unlike the threshold data, increasing contactor size resulted in increases in sensory magnitude at 25 and 40 Hz as well as at 160 Hz. The amount of summation varied directly with amplitude for the two lower frequencies. In a second experiment, the effect of increasing static force, independent of contactor size, was investigated. The results indicated that the spatial summation effects noted in the first experiment may be due to increases in static force and not contactor area. The implications of these results for the concept of spatial summation and for the duplex mechanoreceptor hypothesis are discussed.  相似文献

Five experiments, all employing conditioned suppression in rats, studied inhibitory conditioning to a stimulus signalling a reduction in shock intensity. Experimental subjects were conditioned to a tone signalling a 1·0 mA shock and to a tone-light compound signalling a 0·4 mA shock. On a summation test in which it alleviated the suppression maintained by a third stimulus also associated with the 1·0 mA shock, the light was established as a conditioned inhibitor. Retardation tests gave ambiguous results: the light was relatively slow to condition when paired, either alone or in conjunction with another stimulus, with the 0·4 mA shock, but the difference from a novel stimulus control group was not significant. Two final experiments found no evidence at all of inhibition on a summation test in which the light was presented in conjunction with a stimulus that had itself been associated with the 0·4 mA shock. The results of these experiments have implications for the question of what animals learn during the course of inhibitory conditioning.  相似文献

The spatial characteristics of thermal perception were studied in two experiments that examined how thermal stimuli are processed within the hands. A thermal display that simulates cues associated with making contact with different materials was used in these studies. In the first experiment, participants indicated which of two simulated materials that were presented to the index fingertip was cooler. The results indicated that participants were unable to resolve the two areas of thermal stimulation. In the second experiment, the effects of concurrent thermal stimulation on the ability to discriminate between simulated materials were evaluated. Thermal cues were presented to the middle fingers of both hands and to two adjacent fingers on one hand. Thermal spatial summation was evident across the fingers, which enhanced the ability to discriminate between materials when the cooler stimulus was presented to three fingers. When the same stimulus was presented to the two hands, the stimulation of adjacent fingers altered the perceived thermal response.  相似文献

F ranzén , O. On spatial summation in the tactual sense. A psychophysical and neurophysiological study. Scand. 1. Psychol ., 1969, 10, 193–208 .—Individual magnitude estimation scales of apparent intensity of a 300 c/s vibration applied to the volar aspect of the finger-tip as a function of displacement and the number of fingers stimulated were obtained. Spatial summation seems to take place with a lawful increase in perceived intensity as two and three adjacent sensory channels are excited at the same time. Median nerve compound action potentials following electrical stimulation of the index and middle fingers were recorded. A mathematical model is presented to describe and predict spatial summation. The results are interpreted in terms of funneling action of nervous tissue.  相似文献
