The similarities between dramatic religious and psychotic experiences have long been observed and, just as long, have proved a source of confusion and misunderstanding. Recent surveys on decompensation to schizophrenic psychosis offer not only striking comparisons to the phenomenon of sudden and dramatic religious conversion but clues to the limits of continuity between these two mental processes. Using Docherty and his associates model of the stages of onset of schizophrenic psychosis and their own review of the literature of religious conversion, the authors suggest three principal similarities and the point of departure between the two phenomena.The authors are indebted to John P. This article describes the exclusion of public expressions of religion from the history of bioethics during recent decades. It offers a proposal to include the public church for the purpose of gaining donations of vital organs for transplantation. Some debate exists about the degree to which one should merge one’s identities, particularly those with important normative content, with one’s teaching practices. This issue becomes particularly important for those with a religious identity who purposefully merge their identity with classroom practices. This article examines the qualitative answers of 328 Christian professors to a question addressing how they merge their Christian theological tradition with their ethical teaching in the classroom. We find that the answers demonstrate the identity merging takes place in multiple ways. For these professors, teaching consists of multiple sub-practices (e.g. discussion, lecturing, grading, etc.) that need to be guided by certain virtues and theological perspectives and justifications in order to develop the requisite goods. Indeed, both good teaching and their conception of the good cannot be separated from their identity.  相似文献

Conclusion Such are the issues that two psychologists with theological training and ministerial ordination draw from social science literature as it relates to religious conversion. Few, if any, of these issues are settled definitively. There is a great need for solid, responsible research, not to prove or disprove, but simply to understand, predict, and, where desirable, control. For these are the goals of science. Before research can be productive, however, these are the goals of science. Before research can be productive, however, there is need for theoretical development. Inadequate conceptualization, especially of necessary distinctions and discriminations, has handicapped the scientific investigation of religion almost as much as a limited tool kit. But the signs of the times regarding social scientific investigation of conversion are hopeful. Especially to be recommended for further research by someone well acquainted with the field of religious conversion is the vast literature in social psychology on opinions, attitudes, and beliefs. Medical ethics prohibits caregivers from discriminating and providing preferential care to their compatriots and comrades. In military medicine, particularly during war and when resources may be scarce, ethical principles may dictate priority care for compatriot soldiers. The principle of nondiscrimination is central to utilitarian and deontological theories of justice, but communitarianism and the ethics of care and friendship stipulate a different set of duties for community members, friends, and family. Similar duties exist among the small cohesive groups that typify many military units. When members of these groups require medical care, there are sometimes moral grounds to treat compatriot soldiers ahead of enemy or allied soldiers regardless of the severity of their respective wounds.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The ethical evaluation of religious giving involves multiple metrics of theological references, everyday ethics, ritual correctness, and materialist self-interest. Understanding how these categories are constantly re-made and experienced in the lives of individuals and the broader history of religious traditions is vital to understandings of the ethics of religious giving. The salience of this ‘value pluralism’ is particularly amplified in contemporary Asian contexts, where complex inter- and intra-religious dynamics, agendas of modernizing reform, state projects of nation building, economic development programs, and various forms of activist mobilization cut across intertwining vectors. It is our goal to describe the ongoing everyday decision-making processes of individuals in diverse contexts in order to contribute both empirically and theoretically to discussions of the ethics of religious giving. In this special issue, we present an interactionist perspective in which the category of ‘the religious’ is dynamically and mutually reconfigured in relation to other salient fields of charity, philanthropy, and humanitarianism.  相似文献

Homosexuality has become a divisive issue in many religious communities. Partly because of that, individuals growing up in such a community and experiencing same sex attractions need to negotiate the messages about homosexuality with their own experiences. This paper explores the identity strategies of religious communities as the background of individual identity struggles. Following a discussion of Bauman's grammars of identity/alterity, it describes four different discourses employed in conservative protestant and evangelical circles: holiness, subjectivity, obedience, and responsibility and four modes of negotiation: Christian lifestyle, gay lifestyle, commuting (compartmentalisation), and integration. By combining an analysis of discourses on the community level with individual strategies, this narrative research helps to better understand the interactions of (group) culture and individual coping.  相似文献
