CASTE AND MARRIAGE AMONG THE SIKHS OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: OBSERVATIONS FROM A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

This study examined the attitudes of Sikhs in southern California toward inter-caste marriages. It looked at numerous variables such as caste background, gender, income, education, and time spent in the USA and examined them quantitatively. Qualitative observations also buttressed discussion of the quantitative variables. The findings of this study show attainment of greater levels of education causes individuals to adopt a more liberal attitude toward inter-caste marriage. The ranking of a person in the caste hierarchy also played a significant role in shaping attitudes toward inter-caste marriage: individuals from highest and lowest positions in the caste hierarchy (Jats and Dalits, respectively) were tended to be less open to inter-caste marriages whereas those belonging to castes in the middle of the hierarchy had more liberal attitudes. Gender, income, and time spent in the USA had limited impact vis-à-vis the two variables mentioned previously in shaping one's attitude toward inter-caste marriage.     

MARRIAGE AND DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS

This study examined gender differences in the configuration of components of intimacy in marriage and in the relationship of marriage to depression in a community sample of 260 men and women. We hypothesized that women's report of marital intimacy would include a distinct self-disclosure component, whereas this would be part of companionship in men's report of intimacy. Also, using self-in-relation theory, we hypothesized that self-esteem level would mediate the relationship between marital quality and depression for women but would moderate this relationship for men. Both predictions were upheld, suggesting a need to reformulate current models of the role of marital quality in depression to better capture the influence of gender.     

THE RELATIONSHIP OF ‘EXCHANGE-ORIENTATION’ AND ‘COMMITMENT’ SCALES TO MARRIAGE ADJUSTMENT*

Believing that “exchange” and “commitment” are basic dimensions associated with marriage adjustment (MA), scales measuring these three dimensions were administered to 40 married couples. Exchange was predicted to be negatively correlated with MA, commitment positively associated with it, and an individual's exchange and commitment qualities were predicted to affect his partner's MA. The hypotheses were all supported. Further analyses, however, revealed that husbands' MA was more strongly associated with their own exchange and commitment scores than those of their wives. However, wives' MA was equally associated with their own and their husbands' exchange and commitment scores. The implications of this finding for women's position in marriage are discussed.     

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS FOR STUDYING FEMALE MARRIAGE MIGRANTS

Transnational marriages account for a significant proportion of family-based immigration to North America. An increasing number of immigrant men are choosing to marry women from their countries of origin, and an increasing number of nonimmigrant men are choosing to marry women from other countries. Existing studies on the experiences of foreign brides entering North America have highlighted their vulnerability to spousal maltreatment, including unique forms of immigration abuse (e.g., threats of deportation). Their vulnerability to maltreatment has been attributed to the gender-insensitive nature of family immigration policies, the women's lack of awareness of their rights and immigration status, and their husbands' cultural beliefs about women's roles. This article describes three interrelated theoretical frameworks that can inform further research, practice, and policy development related to female marriage migrants. The frameworks draw on cross-cultural models of gender-based violence, seminal work on the psychology of women, and international human rights research.
