In a national survey of college counseling centers, 40 percent of the responding counseling center directors indicated that information about counselees was given out without the students' permission. Information was available to administrative heads for use in recommendations and disciplinary action, 21 percent; deans of students, 10 percent; faculty in general, 5 percent; and prospective employers, 2 percent. This practice is in violation of the ethical codes of APGA and APA except in those relatively rare instances where there is clear and imminent danger to society. In this paper some speculation about the cause of breakdown in confidentiality is discussed, and some suggestions for correcting the situation are offered.  相似文献

Factual and subjective data gathered from counseling centers in 36 major universities is presented to show present conditions, emphasis, and needs of the future. Data are presented showing ratios of counselors to students, budget allotments, strengths, specific weaknesses, etc. Counseling facilities, services provided, emphasis, communications and plans for expansion are dealt with individually. Less than half the centers were meeting student needs and a majority indicated a shortage of professional staff, particularly those competent to do personal adjustment counseling.  相似文献

Many clients leave counseling prematurely (i.e., without their counselors' agreement). Understanding premature termination is crucial to the effectiveness and efficiency of the counseling enterprise. The authors review research on client attrition from university counseling centers, explore implications for practice, and offer suggestions for future research. Methodological problems and sparse data on some variables preclude firm conclusions, although there are some promising directions, such as theory-based studies, exploration of cognitive-expectancy factors, and client-counselor interaction research. It is becoming increasingly clear that premature termination is not a unitary phenomenon and that dropouts are a heterogeneous group, suggesting the need for greater conceptual and methodological precision in the study of counseling attrition.  相似文献

This paper defines and describes the characteristics, education and training of paraprofessionals who work in the fields of mental health and substance abuse. There are wide variations in the amount of education and training which paraprofessionals possess but many are drawn from the same cultural background as their clients or have experienced the same problems. The types of group psychotherapy which paraprofessionals are qualified to lead are discussed. Most groups fall into the categories of activity or short-term problem-oriented groups. Dealing with increasing numbers of college students who present with serious psychological problems has been identified as a significant challenge for counseling centers in the current decade. On the basis of their review of research, G. L. Stone and J. Archer (1990) concluded that the level of psychopathology among counseling center clients increased during the 1980s and likely would continue to do so into the 1990s. A closer look at the research shows that there is the perception among counseling center practitioners that psychopathology is on the rise but little direct evidence to support such a trend. Although not necessarily on the increase, there is empirical evidence that certain forms of psychological disturbance are not uncommon among clinical and nonclinical college student samples. Implications for counseling center research and practice based on this literature review are discussed.  相似文献

This article discusses the present realities of college and university counseling centers as the bases for proposing a more adaptive and interactive model of the original Cube developed by W. H. Morrill, E, R. Oetting, and J. C. Hurst (1974). The article conceptualizes an evolved model of the Cube, here termed the global model, which allows counseling centers to function, in light of current and future demands, with greater flexibility, interdependency, and collaboration vis-á-vis the campus community.  相似文献

Graduate students typically serve in a wide variety of positions throughout their course of study in an academic setting. Because of the large number of roles assumed, graduate students may encounter several ethical dilemmas unique to the academic setting, particularly dilemmas regarding nonsexual multiple relationships. Although the topic of multiple relationships and psychologists has been extensively discussed in the literature, fewer articles have focused on the potential for nonsexual multiple relationships between graduate assistants, practicum students, and undergraduate students. This article focuses on the unique ethical dilemmas and challenges experienced by graduate assistants completing their practica at University Counseling Centers and provides recommendations for evaluating and managing nonsexual multiple relationships with undergraduate students.  相似文献
