The trouble with Madeleine

I respond to Selinger and Mix (Selinger, E. and Mix, J. 2004. On interactional expertise: Pragmatic and ontological considerations. Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 3: 145–163), concentrating on their charges that Collins (Collins, H. M. 2004a. Interactional expertise as a third form of knowledge. Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 3: 125–143) underrates the importance of interactional expertise as an expertise sui generis and that the paper fails to analyse the idea of embodiment sufficiently holistically, misleading treating the ‘body’ as no more than the linear sum of its parts. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Francis Collins,the Skeptics,and Evidence for God

Skeptical Inquirer magazine has published an attempted refutation of Francis Collins' book, The Language of God. The refutation argues that Collins lacks scientific evidence for God and that Collins actually appeals not to evidence, but to personal belief. In refutation of this refutation, Ted Peters argues that Collins plays completely within the rules of scientific discourse while providing rational evidence—though not conclusive proof—for the existence of God as creator and moral lawgiver.

“Am I Not a Woman?” The Rhetoric of Breast Cancer Stories in African American Women's Popular Periodicals

Representations of breast cancer are examined in three popular women's periodicals targeting African American readers: Ebony, Essence, and Black Elegance. The researcher focuses specifically on representations that reflect certain ideas/ideals about the sharing and creating of information about the disease and related issues, such as health care and body image. Magazine selections are analyzed and critiqued according to the epistemological principles outlined by Patricia Hill Collins in Black Feminist Thought. The author calls for further research into how and why particular social and cultural groups consume information about health and illness in particular ways.

Fired Up and Loaded for Bear

Three plausible psychoanalytic interpretations of a poem by Billy Collins are presented: one based on the psychoanalytic concept of reaction formation; another on the psychoanalytic view that the aims of civilization require certain renunciations of instinctual gratification; and a third on Sigmund Freud’s suggestion in Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious (1905) that irony is a subspecies of the comic. While the first two interpretations focus on the subject—the poem’s protagonist—the third focuses on its technique. As a result, the third interpretation is likely to be more useful to readers who wish to apply it to their own life-situations. To illustrate this fact, the author relates the poem to his own life-situation, which is that of entering older adulthood.

Three Failed Dialogues from the Biblical World

Read in the light of the best selling books by John Gray and Deborah Tannen concerning communication between the sexes, three ancient tests—two from Hebrew Scripture and one from ancient Iraq—teach primarily by illustration how not to dialogue with one's spouse, one's friend, or one's boss. Rereading these ancient texts in the light of what John Gray Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus [New York: Harper Collins, 1992] calls advanced relationship skills reveals vital lessons, which can be applied to improve the quality of life at home, in the workplace, and God help us, in the house of mourning.     

On interactional expertise: Pragmatic and ontological considerations

This paper is a critical examination of Harry Collins's investigation into a third form of knowledge, “interactional expertise.” We argue that although Collins makes a genuine contribution to the phenomenological literature on expertise, his account requires further critical evaluation and response due to pragmatic and ontological considerations. We contend that by refining (in some questionable ways) the category of interactional expertise so as to create epistemological equivalence between activists, sociologists, critics, journalists, and some science administrators, Collins potentially undermines the value that a more rigorously construed concept of interactional expertise might have. We further show that Collins misunderstands the nature of embodiment in a way that is exacerbated by the sociological perspective that he adopts.
