Theory Reduction in the Social Sciences. The example of balance theories. A central topic both in philosophy of science as well as in the empirical sciences is the reconstruction of the relations between theories. In the past comparisons of theories by means of traditional linguistic methods have proved to be extremely difficult and complicated. In this article the reconstruction of intertheoretical relations based on model-theoretical terms is propagated, as formulated within the structuralist view of theories. The efficiency of a model theoretical based comparison of theories is demonstrated by two theory elements from the social science research program of balance theories: The basic element by Heider and the transitivity theory by Holland and Leinhardt. First of all both theory elements are introduced informally and reconstructed in the structuralist format. On the basis of these reconstructions can be shown, that the Heider theory can be formally reduced to the Holland-Leinhardt theory and that the theory younger in history means an improvement. However, an integration of all balance theoretical elements into a theory net is not possible. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

In December 2009 the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found in its judgment in the case of M. v. Germany that the retroactive repeal of the 10-year time limit for the first order of preventive detention violated articles 5 and 7 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR). It took the German legislator about 1 year to reform the law on preventive detention during which the fate of preventive detainees was debated highly emotionally. Part of this reform is the Law on Therapy and Detention of Mentally Disordered Violent Offenders. It provides the possibility to further detain those persons who would have to be released following the ECtHR judgment. The key element is the very broad criterion ??mental disorder?? which is meant to justify the deprivation of liberty under article 5 § 1 lit. (e) ECHR. However, the attempt to bypass the ECtHR judgment in accordance with the ECHR is unsuccessful: the detention is a violation of article 5 ECHR.

Die Patientin Judith*, auf die alle – auch die engsten – Diagnosekriterien der Schizophrenie ohne Zweifel und über lange Zeitr?ume zutreffen, ist nach nun 15-j?hrigem Krankheitsverlauf weiterhin in Behandlung. Sie konnte nach Diagnose und Therapie ihrer Erkrankung den Pflichtschulabschluss und ein Studium schaffen und arbeitet nun erfolgreich in einem akademischen Beruf. Diese Kasuistik schildert, wie wichtig eine vertrauensvolle Arzt-Patienten-Beziehung im Behandlungsverlauf schizophrener Menschen ist und zeigt, wie eine Kombination aus glücklichen Umst?nden, Psychotherapie und Pharmakotherapie zu einem sehr günstigen Therapieergebnis führen kann. Mir selbst wurde durch diese Patientin eine optimistischere Sichtweise dieser schweren psychiatrischen Erkrankung erm?glicht.
