This paper contributes to ongoing discussions on feminism and the analysis of discourse. In particular, I examine Celia Kitzinger’s
[(2000), Doing feminist conversation analysis. Feminism and Psychology, 10, 163–193 and (2002) Doing feminist conversation analysis. In P. McIlvenny (Ed.), Talking gender and sexuality. Amsterdam: John Benjamins Publishing Company.] claims to be engaged in “feminist conversation analysis.” This paper identifies
susceptibilities in her arguments at both the theoretical level and the level of data analysis. My argument is that Kitzinger
fails to appreciate the fact that her enterprise is basically a formal analytic one and that as such it is both radically
different from, and incommensurate with, ethnomethodology (EM) and conversation analysis (CA). Indeed her attempts to supplement
feminism with EM/CA are unnecessary and counterproductive from an EM/CA position insofar as they crucially undermine its integrity.

Husserl is well known for his critique of the “mathematizing tendencies” of modern science, and is particularly emphatic that
mathematics and phenomenology are distinct and in some sense incompatible. But Husserl himself uses mathematical methods in
phenomenology. In the first half of the paper I give a detailed analysis of this tension, showing how those Husserlian doctrines
which seem to speak against application of mathematics to phenomenology do not in fact do so. In the second half of the paper
I focus on a particular example of Husserl’s “mathematized phenomenology”: his use of concepts from what is today called dynamical
systems theory.

This article brings out certain philosophical difficulties in Lacan’s account of the mirror stage, the initial moment of the
subject’s development. For Lacan, the “original organization of the forms of the ego” is “precipitated” in an infant’s self-recognition
in a mirror image; this event is explicitly prior to any social interactions. A Hegelian objection to the Lacanian account
argues that social interaction and recognition of others by infants are necessary prerequisites for infants’ capacity to recognize
themselves in a mirror image. Thus mutual recognition with another, rather than self-recognition in a mirror, is what makes
possible subsequent ego-formation and self-consciousness. This intersubjective critique suggests that many of the psychoanalytic
consequences that Lacan derives from the mirror stage (e.g., alienation, narcissism, and aggressivity) may need to be rethought.

In this paper, we examine Shaun Gallagher’s project of “naturalizing” phenomenology with the cognitive sciences: front-loaded phenomenology (FLP). While we think it is a productive proposal, we argue that Gallagher does not employ genetic phenomenological methods in his execution of FLP. We show that without such methods, FLP’s attempt to locate neurological
correlates of conscious experience is not yet adequate. We demonstrate this by analyzing Gallagher’s critique of cognitive
neuropsychologist Christopher Frith’s functional explanation of schizophrenic symptoms. In “constraining” Gallagher’s FLP
program, we discuss what genetic phenomenological method is and why FLP ought to embrace it. We also indicate what types of
structures a genetically modified FLP will consider, and how such an approach would affect the manner in which potential neurological correlates of conscious
experience are conceptually understood and experimentally investigated.

In contemporary philosophy and psychology there is an ongoing debate around the concept of theory of mind. Theory of mind
concerns our ability to understand another person. The two approaches that dominate the debate are “Theory Theory” (TT) and
“Simulation Theory” (ST). This paper explores the connection between theory of mind and hermeneutics. Although both speak
of the nature of understanding, and the way we gain and organize our knowledge of others, certain aspects of Schleiermacher’s
hermeneutics reflect a theory approach, long before TT itself was developed. In contrast, Dilthey’s hermeneutics reflects
a simulation approach. In contrast to both of these approaches, I propose a contextual theory, as a parallel to Gadamer’s
work in hermeneutics, and as a view that offers the basis for an important critique of both TT and ST.

It is widely believed that the so-called knowledge account of assertion best explains why sentences such as “It’s raining
in Paris but I don’t believe it” and “It’s raining in Paris but I don’t know it” appear odd to us. I argue that the rival
rational credibility account of assertion explains that fact just as well. I do so by providing a broadly Bayesian analysis
of the said type of sentences which shows that such sentences cannot express rationally held beliefs. As an interesting aside,
it will be seen that these sentences also harbor a lesson for Bayesian epistemology itself.

This Husserlian transcendental-phenomenological investigation of interkinaesthetic affectivity first clarifies the sense of
affectivity that is at stake here, then shows how Husserl’s distinctive approach to kinaesthetic experience provides evidential
access to the interkinaesthetic field. After describing several structures of interkinaesthetic-affective experience, I indicate
how a Husserlian critique of the presupposition that we are “psychophysical” entities might suggest a more inclusive approach
to a biosocial plenum that includes all metabolic life.

In this essay, I respond to Nick Trakakis’ “A Third (Meta-)Critique.” This critique is directed against my argument concerning
the inadequacy of the traditional theistic argument from free will. I contend that the argument from free will does not adequately
explain the distribution of moral evil in the world. I maintain that the third critique, like Trakakis’ earlier critiques,
is unconvincing. I remain convinced that my original argument regarding the inadequacy of the traditional argument from free
will is compelling. The argument from freedom of the will, considered in itself, is unpersuasive.

In this paper, I argue that Friedrich Nietzsche’s concept of self-overcoming has been largely misinterpreted in the philosophy
of education journals. The misinterpretation partially stems from a misconstruction of Nietzsche’s perspectivism, and leads
to a conception of self-overcoming that is inconsistent with Nietzsche’s educational ideals. To show this, I examine some
of the prominent features of the so-called “debate” of the 1980s surrounding Nietzsche’s conception of self-overcoming. I
then offer an alternative conception that is more consistent with Nietzsche’s thought, and provides a more nuanced understanding
of Nietzsche’s “anti-democratic” pedagogy. Ultimately, I argue that while Nietzsche’s educational philosophy is not egalitarian,
it can be effectively utilized in “democratic” classrooms, assuming his concept of self-overcoming is properly construed.

This article provides a phenomenological analysis of the difference between self-recognition and recognition of another, while
referring to some contemporary neuroscientific studies on the rubber hand illusion. It examines the difference between these
two forms of recognition on the basis of Husserl’s and Merleau-Ponty’s work. It argues that both phenomenologies, despite
their different views on inter-subjectivity, allow for the specificity of recognition of another. In explaining self-recognition,
however, Husserl’s account seems less convincing. Research concerning the rubber hand illusion has confirmed that self-recognition
involves more than an immediate experience of oneself. Merleau-Ponty’s later work, describing self-recognition as the result
of assimilative identification, will be used to explain the possibility of illusion between one’s “hereness” and “thereness”.
The possibility of this illusion is inherent to self-recognition, while it is lacking in recognition of another.

This essay proposes a semantic analysis of biscuit-conditionals, such as Austin’s classic example “there are biscuits in the
cupboard if you want some”. The analysis is grounded on the ideas of contextual restrictions, and of non-character encoded
aspects of meaning, and provides a rigorous framework for the widespread intuitions that (i) the if-clause in a biscuit-conditional
is truth-conditionally idle, but (ii) it ‘qualifies’ the speech-act in question. In the concluding section of this essay,
the analysis is also applied to the importantly similar phenomenon of speech-act adverbs.

The impact of response distortion (faking) on selection decisions was investigated. Participants (N = 224) completed the NEO-PI-R under instructions to “make the most favorable impression” and/or “answer honestly.” Those instructed to fake were often over-represented at the top of the score distributions as instructions to fake resulted in higher scores both between and within groups in a test–retest situation. There was significantly lower correspondence between participants’ honest scores and their faked scores as well as multiple instances where participants with unfavorable honest scores subsequently produced the most favorable scores when faking. Response distortion may remain a serious threat to the use of personality test scores in selection.
