Many have claimed that education of the ethical issues raised by biotechnology is essential in universities, but there is
little knowledge of its effectiveness. The focus of this paper is to investigate how university students assess the information
given in class to make their own value judgments and decisions relating to issues of agricultural biotechnology, especially
over genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Analysis of homework reports related with agricultural biotechnology after identification
of key concepts and ideas in each student report is presented. The ideas were sorted into different categories. The ideas
were compared with those in the reading materials using the same categories. These categories included: concern about affects
on humans, affects on the environment, developing countries and starvation, trust in industry, responsibility of scientists,
risk perception, media influence, need for (international) organizations or third parties, and information dissemination.
What was consistent through the different years was that more than half of the students took a “neutral” position. A report
was scored as “neutral” when the report included both the positive and negative side of an issue, or when the student could
not make a definite decision about the use of GMOs and GM food. While it may be more difficult to defend a strong “for” or
“against” position, some students used logical arguments successfully in doing so. Sample comments are presented to depict
how Japanese students see agricultural technology, and how they value its application, with comparisons to the general social
attitudes towards biotechnology. 相似文献

This study was part of a series investigating lay attributions for the cure of psychological problems. Three groups of students--Japanese students in Japan, Japanese students studying in England, and British students--completed a questionnaire and rated the perceived efficacy of 24 different strategies for overcoming each of 5 psychological problems: agoraphobia, depression, smoking cessation, lack of confidence, and obesity. Factor analysis of the curative strategies revealed 5 interpretable factors, the first 3 of which were Professional Help, Inner Control, and Understanding. There were numerous cultural differences between the British group and both Japanese groups in their written ratings of strategies, particularly professional help, for each psychological problem. 相似文献

The aim of this article is to strengthen links between cognitive brain research and formal logic. The work covers three fundamental
sorts of logical inferences: reasoning in the propositional calculus, i.e. inferences with the conditional “if...then”, reasoning
in the predicate calculus, i.e. inferences based on quantifiers such as “all”, “some”, “none”, and reasoning with n-place
relations. Studies with brain-damaged patients and neuroimaging experiments indicate that such logical inferences are implemented
in overlapping but different bilateral cortical networks, including parts of the fronto-temporal cortex, the posterior parietal
cortex, and the visual cortices. I argue that these findings show that we do not use a single deterministic strategy for solving
logical reasoning problems. This account resolves many disputes about how humans reason logically and why we sometimes deviate
from the norms of formal logic.

The first observation is that existential reason has two principal strata. While the function of lower reason is primarily
reasoning or logic, upper reason ponders emotions, the meaning of existence, the transcendent. Those whose understanding of
reason is confined to lower reason are handicapped in coping with emotional and spiritual suffering. Upper reason is a necessary
intellectual facility in the resolution of such suffering. The second observation is of thedialectical nature of reason, with which clinicians and theologians trade when pondering reality and in dealing with those they counsel.
Yet, many people, especially Americans, are oblivious to the “both-and” reality of existence. Consequently they are not realistic
about life nor are they skillful in dealing with their resulting existential conflicts. They are lost when psychological problems
cannot be satisfactorily resolved by lower reason; for only upper reason can perceive and creatively integrate the dialectical

Thirty-four biotechnology researchers of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), United Kingdom, and twenty-eight of the Brazilian Agriculture Research Enterprise (Embrapa), Brazil, were asked which factors are important for research; and the external influences in defining their research project objectives. The data show that: 1) eight of the eighteen selected factors that influenced their research have statistically significant differences when the perceptions of both research groups were compared; and, 2) both research groups do not perceive significant influences from external groups and organizations when defining research project objectives. 相似文献

The idea that reasoning is a singular accomplishment of the human species has an ancient pedigree. Yet this idea remains as
controversial as it is ancient. Those who would deny reasoning to nonhuman animals typically hold a language-based conception
of inference which places it beyond the reach of languageless creatures. Others reject such an anthropocentric conception
of reasoning on the basis of similar performance by humans and animals in some reasoning tasks, such as transitive inference.
Here, building on the modal similarity theory of Vigo [J Exp Theor Artif Intell, 2008 (in press)], we offer an account in which reasoning depends on a core suite of subsymbolic processes for similarity assessment,
discrimination, and categorization. We argue that premise-based inference operates through these subsymbolic processes, even
in humans. Given the robust discrimination and categorization abilities of some species of nonhuman animals, we believe that
they should also be regarded as capable of simple forms of inference. Finally, we explain how this account of reasoning applies
to the kinds of transitive inferences that many nonhuman animals display. 相似文献

Improving scientific literacy requires examining both what people believe about scientific issues and why they hold those beliefs. We examined how people justified their agreement with statements regarding evolution, climate change, genetically modified foods, and vaccinations. Participants rated their level of agreement with statements reflecting the scientific consensus on these topics, then responded to open-ended questions asking them to justify their position and to generate challenges to their belief. Responses to individual difference measures allowed us to assess the relationship between participants’ positions on these scientific issues and cognitive style, conspiracy ideation, religious service attendance, and political ideology. Qualitative analyses revealed inconsistent and topic-specific patterns of reasoning. Additionally, greater agreement with scientific conclusions was related to a greater predisposition towards analytical thinking and stronger self-reported political liberalism. These findings provide a next step for better understanding why some individuals reject science and for developing more effective means of improving science acceptance. 相似文献

In this study, the author investigated differences in Japanese and American college students' tendencies to advise a hypothetical rape victim (their sister) to seek help from police, family members, or mental health professionals. Japanese students tended to encourage the victim to seek help from her family members, whereas American students tended to encourage her to seek help from police and mental health counselors. Cross-cultural discrepancies were marked by the following factors: (a) feelings of shame moderated advice to seek help from police; (b) minimization of rape mediated the likelihood to advise the involvement of police and mental health counselors; (c) attitudes toward mental health counselors mediated advice to seek help from them; and (d) the type of rape (stranger vs. date rape) moderated advice to report the crime to police. 相似文献

To determine the underlying factor structure of the Japanese version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI-J), a principal components analysis was performed on data from 312 Japanese undergraduate students who reported growth due to their most traumatic event within the last 5 years. Results showed the PTGI-J has high internal consistency and, of the original five factors reported by Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996), three were replicated: Relating to Others, New Possibilities, Personal Strength, and a fourth factor integrating Spiritual Change and Appreciation of Life emerged. There were neither gender differences nor relationships with time since trauma. PTGI-J scores were positively associated with posttraumatic symptoms and correlated with type of traumatic event experienced. These results and future directions are discussed from a cross-cultural viewpoint. 相似文献

This study examined the cultural generalizibility of the negative relationship between depression and self-enhancement. Japanese (n = 116) and American (n = 125) students completed the Zung (1965) Self-Rating Depression Scale and three measures of self-enhancement (i.e., the tendency to see oneself in a positive light). As expected, Japanese subjects were found to be more depressed and less self-serving than Americans. Negative correlations between depression and self-enhancement measures were obtained for both samples. Regression analyses of the relationships between measures indicated that sample differences in self-enhancement were explained largely by sample differences in depression. It is proposed that, relative to the Americans, Japanese students had a negative self-schema that led to higher depression and lower self-enhancement. 相似文献

There are certain simple rotations of objects that most people cannot reason about accurately. Reliable gaps in the understanding of a fundamental physical domain raise the question of how learning to reason in that domain might proceed. Using virtual reality techniques, this project investigated the nature of learning to reason across the domain of simple rotations. Learning consisted of the acquisition of spatial intuitions: there was encoding of useful spatiotemporal information in specific problem types and a gradual accumulation of this understanding across the domain. This pattern of learning through the accumulation of intuitions is especially interesting for rotational motion, in which an elegant domain-wide kinematics is available to support insightful learning. Individual ability to reason about rotations correlated highly with mastery motivation, skill in fluid reasoning, and skill in reasoning about spatial transformations. Thus, general cognitive advantages aided the understanding of individual rotations without guaranteeing immediate generalization across the domain. 相似文献

We investigated the association between alexithymic tendencies as measured by the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the characteristics of aesthetic impressions for words and drawings. Impressions were measured using the semantic differential technique in three groups of Japanese students (High scores n = 31, Moderate scores n = 40, and a Control group n = 182) who were presented only words (Word condition), only drawings (Drawing condition), or pairs comprising one word plus one drawing that represented the same emotional categories (Drawing/Word condition). In a factor analysis on the data from participants, three factors (Evaluation, Activity, and Potency) were extracted. Based on the factor scores, the distances among the three conditions were calculated for each of the groups. For Potency, significant group differences were found between the Drawing/Word and other conditions. In the High-scoring alexithymia group, in particular, the Potency impressions based on tactile sensation, e.g., soft-hard, blunt-sharp, were amplified regardless of stimulus condition. These results are discussed in the context of somatosensory amplification associated with alexithymia and the difficulty of distinguishing between emotion and somatic sensations. 相似文献

This study examined the thinking of Japanese mothers (N = 95) concerning the negative and self-assertive behavior of 2;5 and 3;5 year old children. A short structured interview was conducted with middle class mothers to (1) assertain their ideas about the reasons for and the development of negativism and self-assertion, and (2) clarify how mothers respond to such behavior. The results made it clear such childrearing issues as autonomy, negativism, self-assertion, and indeed ego development have a different meaning in the Japanese cultural context than in the Western context from which these psychological terms have been derived. Mothers appeared to be in conflict because they are told to accept negativism and noncompliance as normal and necessary developmentally, even though noncompliant and self-assertive behavior seem to be unacceptable behavior after early Japanese childhood. The results are discussed in terms of implications for childrearing and socialization models, and indicate that traditional Western theories of individuation and autonomy cannot be simply transplanted into the developmental study of Japanese children. 相似文献

Fifty students from each of the grades 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked to complete a questionnaire containing the following three questions: 1) What is stuttering? 2) What is stammering? 3) How did you know that? Analysis of their responses indicated students were more familiar with stuttering as opposed to the term stammering. From grade 6 onward, we can expect at least three-fourths of the students to define stuttering as a disruption of speech consisting chiefly of sound or syllable repetitions. Only about one-fourth of students in grade 6 and above defined stammering as a speech disruption. This disruption was characterized chiefly by repetitions, injections, and pauses. Most of the students were unable to specify how they learned the definitions. The few who did identified family and friends as their chief source of knowledge. 相似文献

Almost every contemporary theory of knowledge is a version of fallibilism, yet an adequate statement of fallibilism has not yet been provided. Standard definitions cannot account for fallibilistic knowledge of necessary truths. I consider and reject several attempts to resolve this difficulty before arguing that a belief is an instance of fallibilistic knowledge when it could have failed to be knowledge. This is a fully general account of fallibilism that applies to knowledge of necessary truths. We performed a confirmatory factor analysis for the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES-III) using 3865 university students in Japan. We confirmed two factors as in the original version, but there were slight differences with the original one. Some items were deleted in order to obtain sufficient goodness-of-fit indexes in a series of confirmatory factor analyses. Moreover, items 11 "Our family, changes its way of handling tasks," 20 "Parents and children discuss in our family," and 15 "We shift household responsibilities," which were originally categorized as "adaptability" items, were loaded on the "cohesion" factor. 相似文献

An earlier report by Mecacci and Rocchetti showed a significant, weak, and positive correlation between Evening type as measured by the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and Type A personality as measured by the Jenkins Activity Survey and the Bortner Type A Scale in Italian college students. The present study of 503 Japanese college students yielded a significant and weakly negative correlation. The bases for the different results were discussed in a psychophysiological context. 相似文献

To investigate color and number preferences in Japan, 586 university undergraduates (239 men and 347 women; M age = 20.9 yr.) were asked to name a color (Question 1), to name their preferred color (Question 2), and to name their preferred number between zero and nine (Question 3). The results showed that Japanese students chose blue (33.5%) or red (26.0%) when asked to name a color but that red was not chosen as frequently as blue as a preferred color (red: 11.1%, blue: 37.1%). Sex differences were found on both Questions 1 and 2 by chi-squared test. Black was chosen more by men, while pink was selected more by women. 22.5% subjects also selected the number seven, supporting Simon's observation of the "blue-seven phenomenon." The reasons given for the choice showed that seven was "a lucky number" and "represented happiness" among Japanese students. Four colors (blue, red, white, and black) accounted for 76.8% and 65.1% of responses to Questions 1 and 2, respectively, and odd numbers 68.4% for Question 3. 相似文献
