This study examined whether an emotional temperament moderated scores on the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) in adults. It was predicted that people who were high in fear would score in the impulsive and reflective quadrants of the MFFT, and those who were low in fear would score in the other two quadrants of the MFFT. Eighty-five college students completed the EASI Temperament Survey and later the MFFT. The results supported the prediction. Relative to others, subjects who scored in the impulsive and reflective quadrants of the MFFT also scored significantly higher on the Fear subscale of the EASI Temperament Survey. Implications for the role of fear in interpreting scores on the MFFT were drawn.  相似文献

Forty-seven mentally handicapped and 47 non-handicapped children matched on mental age were assessed with Kagan's Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) and a Piagetian measure designed to elicit moral judgements. No significant differences were observed in the error and latency scores between the two groups nor in the proportion of reflective, impulsive, fast/accurate or slow/inaccurate individuals. The results also indicated that the subjects did not differ in their level of moral judgement; although reflectives made moral judgements on the basis of intention rather than consequence. Moral judgement was not significantly correlated with performance on the MFFT. The findings were interpreted as being consistent with Zigler's developmental concept of cultural-familial retardation and suggesting that the ability to solve moral dilemmas appears to involve cognitive capacities.  相似文献

The Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) measures a dimension of cognitive style known as reflection-impulsivity. Interpretations of the MFFT sometimes supplement its cognitive implications with one of two personality models, impulsivity and/or ego-resilience. Both models have received some research support from studies that used preadolescent subjects. The applicability of these two personality models to adults was evaluated in this research. In three studies on college students, one personality characteristic within the ego-resilience position, independent-oriented achievement, was found to differentiate between impulsive and reflective scorers on the MFFT. No support was found for the impulsivity position. Implications were drawn for the influence of personality on the MFFT.  相似文献

A probabilistic model of reflection-impulsivity as measured by the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) is presented and tested on 77 fourth graders. In testing the model two groups emerged, a random response group (n = 22) and a cognitive response group (n = 55), who use the evaluation process. Correlations among latencies, total errors, initial errors, school-scores, and IQs were compared for our total sample and the two groups. The correlation of MFFT latencies and errors disappeared for the random-response group and new correlations with errors appeared while the cognitive response group kept a statistically significant correlation of latencies with errors and no other error correlation was shown. This last group was classified by Kagan's median-split procedure showing that most reflective subjects kept their classification. Preliminary results suggest a reinterpretation of reflection-impulsivity literature, especially as related to the impulsive style.  相似文献

Cognitive processes in the reflective-impulsive cognitive style   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this study, the authors improved the understanding of the cognitive processes underlying the reflective-impulsive cognitive style (RI), which was initially measured by J. Kagan, B. L. Rosman, D. Day, J. Albert, and W. Phillips (1964) on the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT). The authors determined the relationships between the RI style and the cognitive factors, which would be likely to explain different MFFT solving modes-field dependence or independence as a cognitive style, the g factor, the spatial factor, and a metacognitive control index, which the authors developed for this study. The hypotheses were largely based on various studies (J. P. Ancillotti, 1984, 1985; J. Kagan, B. L. Rosman, D. Day, J. Albert, & W. Phillips, 1964; T. Zelniker & W. E. Jeffrey, 1976; T. Zelniker, A. Renan, I. Sorer, & Y. Shavit, 1977). The results are presented separately for each of four groups: (a) reflective individuals, who implement an analytic process and are cognitively mature; (b) impulsive individuals, who use a holistic process and are cognitively immature; (c) fast-accurate individuals, who are capable of implementing both analytic and holistic processes and exhibit cognitive maturity; and (d) slow-inaccurate individuals, who exhibit good metacognitive control but have trouble implementing both types of processing.  相似文献

The results indicate that the MFFT was a valid test of cognitive style for Mexican children. The younger children's MFFT performance was characterized as fast and inaccurate in relation to the older children's performance, which was slower and more accurate. Cross-cultural comparisons of Mexican MFFT scores with normative data from America, Japan, and Israel indicated that Mexican children were relatively impulsive in cognitive style in relation to children of other cultures. Although originally designed as a guide to therapy, the Wolpe-Lang Fear Survey Schedule (FSS) has been the subject of increasing study of its psychometric characteristics. A recent factor analysis of the records of psychiatric patients yielded 16 fear factors. The present study attempted to evaluate the clinical relevance of these factors by comparing the factor scores of adult psychiatric outpatients (AOP) with those of parents of child psychiatry patients (CPC). On 13 of the 16 factors the AOP group scored higher (with 3 of these 13 differences modulated by sex), indicating a strikingly consistent relationship between clinical status and the fear factors. These results suggest that future research of the patterns of fear factor scores as they relate to clinically relevant variables might well be fruitful. In the present study, females scored higher than males on all 16 fear factors (with 3 of these 16 differences appearing only in the AOP group). These results suggest the importance of treating sex as a moderator variable in future research on the FSS and its factors.  相似文献

This study examines the construct validity of the revised version of the Strelau Temperament Inventory (STI-R) and the short scale (STI-RS), which were introduced by Strelau, Angleitner, Bantelmann and Ruch (1990). Hypotheses about the relationship between the content scales of the STI-R, viz. Strength of Excitation (SE), Strength of Inhibition (SI), and Mobility (MO) of CNS properties, and (a) other personality/temperament dimensions referring to the level of arousal, (b) selected temperament inventories, and (c) selected personality scales are derived and tested in a total of four samples with altogether 420 Ss. The inventories investigated include, among others, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire—Revised (EPQ-R), Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS), the I.7 Impulsiveness Questionnaire (I.7), the Affect-Intensity-Measure (AIM), the EASI, the Structure of Temperament Questionnaire (STQ), and the Revised Dimensions of Temperament Survey (DOTS-R). In general, the hypotheses regarding the place of the STI-R in the temperament and personality domain were confirmed. A factor analysis of the STI-R, EASI, and DOTS-R yielded five factors: Emotional Stability, Rhythmicity, Activity/Tempo, Sociability, and Impulsivity versus Impulse Control.  相似文献

Hypotheses concerning socio-economic conditions related with the development, psychological processes and behavioral sequels of time perspective were tested on 249 students, 19–23 years of age. Three dimensions of time perspective viz. future orientation (FO), future extension and total extension were measured. In study 1, ANOVA revealed significant differences between high, medium and low deprived groups on all three dimensions of time perspective. Deprivation on experiential dimension significantly and adversely influenced FO but physico-economic deprivation did not. Study 2 revealed that future oriented and extended outlook is augmented by a reflective style as measured by MFFT. 2×2 ANOVA on delay of gratification scores revealed significant main effects of reflective-impulsive style, and FO. Significant interaction effect showed that those subjects who had high future orientation as well as a reflective style were better able to tolerate delay of gratification.  相似文献

The individual stylistic variations of creative potential and conceptual tempo were investigated in preschool children (n = 61; mean age = 56.9 months). The measure used for the conceptual tempo was the Kansas Reflection Impulsivity Scale for Preschoolers (KRISP), and the Multidimensional Stimulus Fluency Measure (MSFM) was used to assess ideational fluency and creative potential Contrary to expectations, no differences between reflective and impulsive preschoolers were found on the ideational fluency measure. However, analysis of all four quadrants of the conceptual tempo dimensions derived from median splits revealed an interaction of KRISP latency and error scores, F(157) = 12.78, p < .001, with greater originality scores evidenced by the fast/accurate and slow/inaccurate groups than the slow/ accurates and fast/inaccurates. Implications of this unusual finding were discussed in terms of the manner in which children may approach convergent and divergent tasks.  相似文献

Measures of identification with same-sex parent and decision-making style were administered to 30 male and 30 female late adolescents who had been classified by Marcia's (1964) criteria as either identity achieved, foreclosed, moratorium, or diffused. As predicted, male and female foreclosed subjects were more impulsive than were those in the other statuses, and male moratorium subjects were more reflective than others. However, female moratoriums were impulsive, and male and female diffused were reflective, findings which contradict theoretical expectation. Similarly, data on identification were mixed; female achieved subjects scored (as predicted) with higher identification than female moratorium or diffused subjects, while diffused males were highly identified with their fathers. One reason offered for the conflicting results is that identity formation is, as some have suggested, a different process for women than it is for men. Therefore, study of both genders with the same measures and hypotheses is not recommended.  相似文献

A modification of the Matching Familiar Figures Test containing items of varying numbers of response alternatives was given to seventeen impulsive and seventeen reflective first and second grade children who were ascertained by conventional methods. The slopes of the linear functions relating errors and latencies to alternative number significantly differentiated between impulsive and reflective groups. Significant correlations were also observed between latency and error slopes and an impulsivity score computed independently from group data. Since the differences were larger for the latency data, it was proposed that the slope of the relationship between response latencies and alternative set size can be used as a parametric index of reflection-impulsivity.  相似文献

The levels of, and relationships between, dental fear and general fears and phobias were studied in 109 adult patients at a specialized dental fear clinic using two dental fear scales (the Dental Anxiety Scale and the Dental Fear Survey) together with the Fear Survey Schedule II (FSS-II) and some additional fear items. Referred and self-referred fearful dental patients answered mailed questionnaires in conjunction to being put on a 1 yr waiting list for treatment. Among feared objects and situations the separate item 'pain' revealed the highest mean scores for both men and women, followed by fear of suffocating, death of a loved one and sharp objects among women, and death of a loved one, suffocating and hypodermic needles among men. With few exceptions, women scored higher than men. The frequencies of extreme fears (6 and 7 on a 7-point scale) were high and 92.7% of the patients reported at least one extreme fear. Half of the subjects (49.5%) reported five fears or more. It was also shown that a number of FSS-II items correlated to dental fear indicating a relationship between general and dental fear. These results indicated that a large proportion of these dentally fearful individuals were prone to fear-associated reactions and behaviors, which has previously been shown to negatively influence the prognosis of treatment.  相似文献

The relationship between the M response and one of its basic theoretical components, overt motor activity, measured by participation in varsity level sports and related activities, was determined. 114 Ss were assigned to a participant group and 108 Ss to a non-participant group. The Group Rorschach, the Group Form of Coan’s Individual Movement Cards, and the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey were administered. The results failed to confirm Rorschach’s theory that overt motor activity inhibits kinesthetic perception. Flexor movement was significantly associated with non-participation. The participant group scored significantly higher in Factors G (General Activity), A (Ascendance), S (Sociability), and E (Emotional Stability) of the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey. Intellectual functioning appeared as the most important factor in M production.  相似文献

A recent Self-Consciousness Scale (SCS) measures Private and Public Self-Consciousness and Social Anxiety. The present research was intended to establish discriminant validity for the two Self-consciousness components with respect to several other variables. 105 male undergraduates completed the SCS, the Otis Test of Mental Ability, an abbreviated Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (measuring need for achievement), a Test Anxiety Questionnaire, and the EASI Temperament Survey. Private Self-consciousness did not correlate significantly with any other measure. Public Self-consciousness correlated weakly with the temperaments of Sociability and Emotionality. The Self-consciousness components of the SCS thus appear to be relatively independent of the other measures tested.  相似文献

This study examined the relationships between the Five-Factor-Model (FFM) personality dimensions (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Openness/Autonomy), the Pavlovian temperament variables (Strength of Excitation, Strength of Inhibition, Mobility), and fatigue. We expected that all these person characteristics would be negatively associated with fatigue. In a survey among persons working at least 20 h a week (N=765), respondents completed a personality questionnaire (the Five-Factor Personality Inventory), a temperament scale (the Pavlov Temperament Survey), and two fatigue questionnaires (the Checklist Individual Strength-20 and the Emotional Exhaustion scale of the Maslach Burnout Inventory). Results indicated that high scores on Autonomy, and low scores on Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Strength of Excitation were, in various combinations, predictors of higher fatigue scores. Agreeableness, Strength of Inhibition, and Mobility did not play a role in the prediction of any fatigue score. In conclusion, personality and temperament dimensions explained significant proportions of the variance in fatigue. It is stated that there is an urgent need for longitudinal studies in order to examine the predictive value of the personality dimensions over time.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test a hypothesis arising from Farley's theory of arousal and stimulation seeking behavior. Specifically, the hypothesis was that impulsive children would be low arousal/high stimulation seekers while reflective children would be high arousal/low stimulation seekers. Seventy-one elementary school children were identified as reflective or impulsive using Kagan's Matching Familiar Figures Test. Trait arousal levels were then determined using the Strahan Sweat Bottle method. The results confirmed the hypothesis.  相似文献

One hundred college women completed a situational story that dealt with a traditional feminine occupation, while another 100 women completed a story that dealt with a more nontraditional, masculine occupation. The stories were used to measure fear of success. All women furnished information on their college major, career aspirations, and year in school, and completed the Masculinity and Ascendency scales from the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey. Both two- and three-dimensional chi square tests of association were performed to determine the relationship between fear of success and other variables.

Results (p < .05) indicated that fear of success is greater toward a nontraditional occupation, especially for women of low ascendency, and fear of success is greater the closer women get to graduation.  相似文献

以554名3~6年级的小学生为被试,采用量表法、同伴提名法探讨童年中期儿童社交地位、社交自我知觉与孤独感的关系。结果表明:(1)3~6年级小学生的孤独感有显著的性别差异,男生的孤独感显著高于女生。(2)不同社交地位的儿童其孤独感也不同,低接纳组儿童的孤独感显著高于一般接纳组和高接纳组,而一般接纳组与高接纳组儿童的孤独感差异不显著。(3)在高接纳组儿童中,社交自我知觉消极的儿童其孤独感显著高于社交自我知觉一般的儿童,社交自我知觉一般的儿童其孤独感显著高于社交自我知觉积极的儿童;但是在一般接纳组和低接纳组中,社交自我知觉不同的儿童其孤独感并没有显著差异。  相似文献
