In this paper I question the view that realism must delineate the basic ontological furniture of the world rather than giving
arguments in semantic or epistemic terms for the existence of a mind-independent world. I call this view of stating and defending
realism the Ontological Defence of Realism (or ODR) and take Devitt’s account of realism as a paradigmatic case of ODR. I
argue that ODR cannot block ‘verificationist antirealism’ because the specific (physical) nature of what exists is not enough
to secure the mind-independence of what exists and, additionally, every element purported to achieve this, it compromises
seriously the idea that realism is primarily an ontological issue. I also stress that ODR is in tension with a plausible realist
insight namely the priority of the world over our theorizing. Because of this tension ODR weakens realism in several domains
with no good reason. Specifically, I argue that in these domains ODR faces a dilemma: either to reject realism or to take
realism to be dependent on a reductive account violating the realist insight. My point is that we should keep realism and
ontology distinct and that compliance with the realist insight initiates a better strategy for the defence of realism. I address
three possible objections thereby further clarifying my point. I conclude by presenting my view about the relation between
ontology and realism. 相似文献

This paper attempts to motivate skepticism about the reality of mathematical objects. The aim of the paper is not to provide a general critique of mathematical realism, but to demonstrate the insufficiency of the arguments advanced by Michael Resnik. I argue that Resnik’s use of the concept of immanent truth is inconsistent with the treatment of mathematical objects as ontologically and epistemically continuous with the objects posited by the natural sciences. In addition, Resnik’s structuralist program, and his denial of relational properties, is incompatible with a realist metaphysics about mathematical objects. 相似文献

Summary This paper discusses an argument for scientific realism put forward by Anthony Quinton in The Nature of Things. The argument – here called the controlled continuity argument – seems to have received no attention in the literature, apparently because it may easily be mistaken for a better-known argument, Grover Maxwell’s “argument from the continuum”. It is argued here that, in point of fact, the two are quite distinct and that Quinton’s argument has several advantages over Maxwell’s. The controlled continuity argument is also compared to Ian Hacking’s “argument from coincidence”. It is pointed out that both arguments are to a large extent independent from considerations about high-level scientific theories, and that both are abductive arguments at the core. But these similarities do not dilute an important difference related to the fact that Quinton’s argument cleverly seeks to anchor belief in unobservable entities in realism about ordinary objects, which is a position shared by most contemporary scientific anti-realists. 相似文献

Lucy Allais seeks to provide a reading of the Transcendental Deduction of the Categories which is compatible with a nonconceptualist account of Kant’s theory of intuition. According to her interpretation, the aim of the Deduction is to show that a priori concept application is required for empirical concept application. I argue that once we distinguish the application of the categories from the instantiation of the categories, we see that Allais’s reconstruction of the Deduction cannot provide an answer to Hume’s problem about our entitlement to use a priori concepts when thinking about the objects of empirical intuition. If the Deduction is to provide a response to Hume, Allais’s interpretation must be rejected. 相似文献

Technology and Freudian Discontent: Freud’s‘Muffled’ Meliorism and the Problem of Human Annihilation
M. Andrew Holowchak 《Sophia》2010,49(1):95-111
This paper is a comprehensive investigation of Freud’s views on technology and human well-being, with a focus on ‘Civilization
and Its Discontents’. In spite of his thesis in ‘Civilization and Its Discontents’, I shall argue that Freud, always in some
measure under the influence of Comtean progressivism, was consistently a meliorist: He was always at least guardedly optimistic
about the realizable prospect of utopia, under the ‘soft dictatorship’ of reason and guided by advances in science and technology,
in spite of due recognition in his later years of the possibility of annihilation through technological advances in warfare.
The possibility of human annihilation, then, muffled Freud’s meliorism. Freud’s ‘muffled meliorism’, however, was not a quiet
commitment to viewing technology as something good. Ultimately, Freud steered a middle course between techno-advocacy and
techno-antagonism. The technologies of science, like the discoveries of psychoanalysis, were tools for humans that could be
used for human betterment or, as war showed, for human degeneration. 相似文献

John Prine’s Images of God and Male Melancholia: Terror,Forgiveness, and the Persistence of Desire 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Philip Browning Helsel 《Journal of religion and health》2007,46(3):359-368
Examines the God-representations of the country-folk singer John Prine in the light of psychological theory about male melancholia,
drawing from Donald Capps and Erik H. Erikson. Describes the manner in which songwriting serves as a therapeutic enterprise
to express and interpret melancholia in Prine's lyrics, especially in the songs "Saddle in the Rain" and "Fish and Whistle."
At times these images evoke terror and at other times they humorously erase the authority divide between the divine and the
human, suggesting that God may even need to be forgiven. Describing how melancholia is rooted in the man's experience with
mother, this article interprets Prine's image of God in light of the need for sustenance, acknowledgement, and care.

This paper aims to cast light on the reasons that explain the shift of opinion—from scepticism to realism—concerning the reality
of atoms and molecules in the beginning of the twentieth century, in light of Jean Perrin’s theoretical and experimental work
on the Brownian movement. The story told has some rather interesting repercussions for the rationality of accepting the reality
of explanatory posits. Section 2 presents the key philosophical debate concerning the role and status of explanatory hypotheses
c. 1900, focusing on the work of Duhem, Stallo, Ostwald, Poincaré and Boltzmann. Section 3 examines in detail Perrin’s theoretical
account of the molecular origins of Brownian motion, reconstructs the structure and explains the strength of Perrin’s argument
for the reality of molecules. Section 4 draws three important lessons for the current debate over scientific realism. 相似文献

The solution of the problem of the future random events truth is considered in Vasil’ev’s logic. N. A. Vasil’ev graded the logic according to two levels—the level of facts, i.e. time fixed events, and the level of notions or rules, governing these facts. The mathematical construction previously suggested for imaginary Vasil’ev’s logic, extends to the early variant of his logic—a logic of notions. In the paper, we investigate the meaning of problematic and uncertain assertions introduced by Vasil’ev. As a result, we developed a model of Vasil’ev’s logic of facts that resolves also the truth problem of future random events. The imaginary logic has also been extended to the level of notions, and the law of the excluded eighth is gotten in it. The correspondence between Vasil’ev’s terms “some” and “all” and modern quantifiers is discussed. 相似文献

Miracles and the problem of evil are two prominent areas of research within philosophy of religion. On occasion these areas
converge, with God’s goodness being brought into question by the claim that either there is a lack of miracles, or there are
immoral miracles. In this paper I shall highlight a second manner in which miracles and the problem of evil relate. Namely,
I shall give reason as to why what is considered to be miraculous may be dependent upon a particular response to the problem
of natural evil. To establish this claim, I shall focus upon Aquinas’s definition of a miracle and a particular free-will
defence, the Luciferous defence.
