Olfactory adaptation and recovery to methyl isobutyl ketone at a concentration 10 times the absolute detection threshold (It o) was intensively studied in two human Ss. A combined psychophysical procedure was used that allowed comparisons of changes in threshold (It) with changes in the subjective intensity of suprathreshold stimuli. Information was also obtained on the effect of the adapting stimulus on the psychophysical power function for this odorant. A threshold detection procedure was used to estimate changes in It; an unstructured magnitude-estimation procedure was used to monitor changes in the subjective intensity of suprathreshold stimuli and the psychophysical power function. The data provided additional information on the behavioral course of olfactory adaptation and recovery and suggested that this combined method can be used profitably for further investigations of this kind. Complementary to the work of Cain and Engen (1969), the results suggested an increase in the exponent of the power function with increasing adaptation.  相似文献

By attenuating neural and perceptual responses to sustained stimulation, adaptation enhances the detection of new, transient stimuli. Disadaptation serves a similarly important role as a temporal filter for chemoreceptor cells, producing rapid recovery of sensitivity upon termination of the adapting odorant. Previous research from our laboratory indicated that a rapid form of odor adaptation can be measured using a novel, simultaneous-odorant paradigm. In the present study, we extended the earlier method by measuring recovery from adaptation. Perceptual odor adaptation was measured by estimating psychophysical detection thresholds in a group of college-aged student volunteers (N = 20; 12 females, eight males) for a self-adapting odorant, vanilla extract. To induce adaptation, the time between the onset of the adapting odorant and the onset of the target odorant was systematically varied. By first quantifying adaptation, recovery of sensitivity could therefore be investigated by using different time points following the termination of the adapting odorant. Consistent with our previous work, thresholds estimated in the presence of the simultaneous adapting odorant were significantly increased, reflecting a decrease in sensitivity due to adaptation. Conversely, approximately 100 ms following termination of the adapting stimulus (the briefest delay tested), sensitivity began to rapidly recover. Nevertheless, some residual adaptation was evident at the longest offset delay of 500 ms. These findings suggest that the recovery from adaptation proceeds at least as rapidly as the onset of adaptation, a finding that is consistent with physiological evidence from olfactory receptors. These data also suggest the effectiveness of this new odorant paradigm in characterizing the temporal characteristics underlying these critical olfactory mechanisms.  相似文献

Any individual living or working in an odorous environment can experience changes in odor perception, some of which are long lasting. Often, these individuals report a significant reduction in the perception of an odor following long-term exposure to that odor (adaptation). Yet, most experimental analyses of olfactory adaptation use brief odorant exposures which may not typify real-world experiences. Using a procedure combining long-term odor exposure in a naturalistic setting with psychophysical tests in the laboratory, we present evidence to show that reduced odor intensity following long-term exposure is accompanied by odorant-specific shifts in threshold. Subjects were exposed continuously to one of two odorants while in their home for a period of 2 weeks. Exposure produced an odorant-specific reduction in sensitivity and perceived intensity compared with preexposure baselines: Detection thresholds for the adapting odorant were elevated following exposure and perceived intensity ratings for weak concentrations were reduced. For most individuals, reduced sensitivity to the test odorant was still evident up to 2 weeks following the last exposure. The persistence of the change, as evidenced by the duration of recovery from adaptation, distinguishes this phenomenon from the adaptation seen following shorter exposures and highlights the need for the study of exposure durations that are more similar to real-world exposures.  相似文献

Five experiments which attempted to evaluate the relationship between orientation and curvature selectivity in human vision are described. In the first two experiments, threshold elevation for curved gratings was measured after exposure to similar gratings, with the use of either an adaptation (experiment 1) or a masking (experiment 2) paradigm. In both experiments threshold elevation occurred which was selective for both the degree and the direction of curvature of the adapting pattern. Experiment 3 compared the effects of adapting to tilted rectilinear or vertical curved gratings upon threshold for a vertical rectilinear grating. Threshold elevation declined systematically as the adapting gratings were either tilted or made more curved. Experiment 4 measured curvature selectivity as a function of the orientation of a curved adapting grating. Threshold elevation declined as the adapting grating was tilted more, but curvature selectivity remained. Experiment 5 measured the orientation tuning for curved gratings directly. Threshold elevation declined to 50% of its maximum value at an adpating orientation of about 28 degrees. This was constant for all values of curvature used. The resulsts are discussed with reference to the question of whether the human visual system contains 'curvature detectors' or linear-contour detectors which respond to the tangents of curves.  相似文献

The experimental differences between the triangular method and three-alternative forcedchoice (3-AFC) signal detection theory procedure are briefly reviewed, and the conditions to be met for a valid application of the respective procedures under the Thurstone-Ura and 3-AFC models are described. The assumptions of both of these unidimensional probabilistic models are given, and the functions relating the probability of a correct response to d, a parameter of sensory stimulus distance, are specified. Since the two models both contain d, the hypothesis of invariability of this parameter with the triangular method and the 3-AFC procedure was tested using olfactory stimuli. This hypothesis was strongly confirmed, since the functions relating d to the logarithm of the ratio of the physical stimulus values were virtually identical for the two methods and their concomitant models. The results are important not only for the field of olfactory psychophysics; they also have wider methodological and psychophysical interest. The bias against the middle stimulus of a triangle in the triangular method observed when olfactory stimuli are used can be explained as the resultant of sensory adaptation. Finally, some practical implications of the present results for application of the triangular method are discussed.  相似文献

The sensitivity of human Ss to a weak odor (hydrogen sulphide) following prior exposure to it varying in both duration (0–5 min) and concentration (4.05 × 10?7 to 24.40 × 10?7 mg/liter) was studied with a yes-no detection method and a specially designed olfactometer. The effect of adaptation was demonstrated, because the proportion of hits was lower the higher the concentration of the adaptation stimulus, when the response criterion, as measured by the proportion of false alarms, was fairly constant. By contrast, the proportion of hits was apparently independent of the duration of the exposure to the adaptation concentration. This finding suggests that the sense of smell is more stable than is usually believed. The paper ends with a discussion of the importance of considering adaptation in contemporary detection theory.  相似文献

Two rhesus monkeys were trained to detect cool stimuli (decrements in skin temperature from the adapted temperature) presented to the palm of the left hand after the skin had been preadapted to a 33°C temperature. The procedure was analogous to the signal detection “yes-no” method used with human observers. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated by varying the a priori probability of stimulus oecurrence. The proportion of hits and of false alarms increased with increases in the a priori probability of stimulation. The points of isosensitivity of both subjects for cool intensities of 0.3°C, but not at greater intensities, yielded straight lines with slopes of approximately one when plotted on normal-normal coordinates. The values of the d’s detectability index decreased from 3.52 to 0.75 for one subject and from 2.81 1to 1.28 for the other as the stimulus intensity was decreased from 0.8° to 0.15° cooling from the adapting temperature. Cool thresholds for each subject of 0.19° and 0.12°C were computed from classical psychometric functions when threshold was defined as 50% hits at a 50% probability of stimulus occurrence. These thresholds are comparable to published reports of the cool threshold for the rhesus.  相似文献

On the basis of magnitude estimations of solutions of NaCl, quinine sulfate, sucrose, and HCl, a seven-step series of each compound was chosen. The concentration of each compound in the same ordinal position of the series was of approximately the same sensory magnitude. The middle concentration of each series was presented as an adapting stimulus, and the entire series was used to test the effects of 2 min of adaptation on magnitude estimations and quality reports. Both NaCl and sucrose adaptation markedly lowered magnitude estimations of test stimuli of the same compounds for concentrations lower than that of the adapting stimulus, but had little effect on higher concentrations. Cross-adaptation generally enhanced the magnitude estimations over those obtained in initial estimations. Neither adaptation nor cross-adaptation procedures produced quality changes.  相似文献

The degree of adaptation and the time course of recovery after adaptation to NaCl solutions of various intensities were examined by magnitude estimation and simple sensory reaction time using a test stimulus of constant intensity. The results show that the degree of adaptation increased with the adapting concentration following a negatively accelerated function. Similarly, all recovery curves were negatively accelerated functions of the recovery time. The relation between the recovery constant (time necessary to attain two-thirds of normal responsivity) and adapting concentration approximates with both criteria more or less a linear function. Thus the recovery constant is a positively accelerated function of the degree of adaptation. The relationship between concentration and degree of adaptation can be approximated by Beidler’s equation of taste stimulation, while the time course of recovery can be expressed by an exponential equation that can also be related to Beidler’s theory. The two criteria used showed similar deteriorating effects of taste adaptation, indicating that reaction time can also be a useful criterion of the level of sensory responsivity.  相似文献

A series of experiments, using a selective adaptation procedure, investigated some of the properties of the linguistic feature detectors that mediate the perception of the voiced and voiceless stop consonants. The first experiment showed that these detectors are centrally rather than peripherally located, in that monotic presentation of the adapting stimulus and test stimuli to different ears resulted in large and reliable shifts in the locus of the phonetic boundary. The second experiment revealed that the detectors are part of the specialized speech processor, inasmuch as adaptation of a voicing detector (as measured by a shift in the phonetic boundary) occurred only when the voicing information was presented in a speech context. In the third experiment, the detector mediating perception of the voiced stops was shown to be more resistant to adaptation than the detector mediating perception of the voiceless stops.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to measure the sensitivity of two Ss to the odor of butanol. In the first two experiments, the method of double random, yes-no staircases was used. A practice effect of over a log10 unit in millimoles decrease in apparent threshold was observed in both Ss. Consistent shifts in the response criterion were induced when Ss were paid to meet an arbitrarily determined physical criterion. In Experiment S, the confidence rating procedure was used. Results at eight different signal intensities are of the form predicted by signal detection theory. d’ is shown to be related to signal strength by a power function with a slope of about .30 which suggests that the olfactory transducer compresses sensory input produced by weak concentrations of butanol.  相似文献

Olfactometers have been gaining popularity as research tools, but they have yet to replace established testing procedures in a variety of laboratory and clinical settings, including absolute threshold tests. In this research, we designed and operated a simple olfactometer with which to assess threshold. To do this, we used a method-of-adjustment test that was compared to the three-alternative forced choice ascending sniff bottle staircase method, which is currently a standard threshold test procedure. We found that the olfactometer threshold test correlated highly with the staircase method, and that it possessed suitable test–retest reliability. The advantages of the olfactometer threshold test include faster test time and reduced cleaning and reassembly demands. Future use of the olfactometer in olfactory identification and/or detection thresholds amongst odors is also outlined.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of syllabic stress and segment structure on selective adaptation in speech. To this end, a CV place of articulation test continuum was selectively adapted by seven different adapting stimuli; the monosyllables [ba] and [ga], two disyllabic stimuli containing equal stress on both syllables, [baga] and [gabal, and three disyllabic stimuli ([baga]) in which stress placement varied and was cued by the acoustic parameters of fundamental frequency and duration. Results for the two adapting stimuli demonstrated significant [b] adaptation for the stimulus [ba] and significant [g] adaptation for [gal. Of the five other adapting stimuli, only [g] adaptation for the stimulus [bagá] was found to be significant. These findings indicate that the operation of detector mechanisms susceptible to fatigue by an adapting stimulus are even more constrained than has heretofore been suggested. It appears that the adapting and test stimuli must not only have the same phonetic and syllable structure, but also the same syllabic organization.  相似文献

A subject’s sensitivity to a stimulus variation can be studied by estimating the psychometric function. Generally speaking, three parameters of the psychometric function are of interest: the performance threshold, the slope of the function, and the rate at which attention lapses occur. In the present study, three psychophysical procedures were used to estimate the three-parameter psychometric function for an auditory gap detection task. These were an up–down staircase (up–down) procedure, an entropy-based Bayesian (entropy) procedure, and an updated maximum-likelihood (UML) procedure. Data collected from four young, normal-hearing listeners showed that while all three procedures provided similar estimates of the threshold parameter, the up–down procedure performed slightly better in estimating the slope and lapse rate for 200 trials of data collection. When the lapse rate was increased by mixing in random responses for the three adaptive procedures, the larger lapse rate was especially detrimental to the efficiency of the up–down procedure, and the UML procedure provided better estimates of the threshold and slope than did the other two procedures.  相似文献

Perception of sounds along the phonetic dimensionstop vs. continuant was studied by means of a selective adaptation procedure. Subjects first identified a series of synthetic consonant-vowel syllables whose formant transitions varied in duration, slope, and amplitude characteristics. They were perceived as either [ba] or [wa]. After the initial identification test, an adapting stimulus was presented repeatedly, and then the subjects again identified the original test series. Adapting with a stop (either [ba] or [da]) led to a decrease in the number of test stimuli identified as [ba], whereas adapting with the continuant sound [wa] led to an increase in the number of [ba] identification responses. Removing the vowel portion of an adapting stimulus greatly reduced the identification shift only when the resulting stimulus was no longer perceived as speech-like. A reduction in the number of [ba] identifications occurred even when a nonspeech “stop” (the sound of a plucked string) was used as the adapting stimulus, suggesting that phonetic processing is not a necessary condition for an adaptation effect.  相似文献

Psychophysical thresholds reflect the state of the underlying nociceptive mechanisms. For example, noxious events can activate endogenous analgesic mechanisms that increase the nociceptive threshold. Therefore, tracking thresholds over time facilitates the investigation of the dynamics of these underlying mechanisms. Threshold tracking techniques should use efficient methods for stimulus selection and threshold estimation. This study compares, in simulation and in human psychophysical experiments, the performance of different combinations of adaptive stimulus selection procedures and threshold estimation methods. Monte Carlo simulations were first performed to compare the bias and precision of threshold estimates produced by three different stimulus selection procedures (simple staircase, random staircase, and minimum entropy procedure) and two estimation methods (logistic regression and Bayesian estimation). Logistic regression and Bayesian estimations resulted in similar precision only when the prior probability distributions (PDs) were chosen appropriately. The minimum entropy and simple staircase procedures achieved the highest precision, while the random staircase procedure was the least sensitive to different procedure-specific settings. Next, the simple staircase and random staircase procedures, in combination with logistic regression, were compared in a human subject study (n = 30). Electrocutaneous stimulation was used to track the nociceptive perception threshold before, during, and after a cold pressor task, which served as the conditioning stimulus. With both procedures, habituation was detected, as well as changes induced by the conditioning stimulus. However, the random staircase procedure achieved a higher precision. We recommend using the random staircase over the simple staircase procedure, in combination with logistic regression, for nonstationary threshold tracking experiments.  相似文献

Children, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 years old, were randomly divided into three training conditions—a strategy modeling condition, a strategy modeling with overt self-verbalization condition, and a control condition. The subjects in the two modeling conditions were given training on four cognitive tasks, a signal task, a match-to-standard task, a paired-associates task, and a twenty-questions task. A 6 (age) × 2 (sex) × 3 (treatment) × 2 (trial) analysis of variance was performed on each of the dependent variables associated with each of the four tasks. The results of these analyses indicate that both modeling conditions facilitated performance on the signal and match-to-standard tasks for all six age groups. However, the two modeling procedures facilitated performance on the paired-associates and twenty-questions tasks only in the three older age groups. Since the two modeling procedures did not differ in effectiveness, it was suggested that strategy modeling without overt self-verbalization is the more practical and efficient procedure for facilitating cognitive performance in normal children.  相似文献

NaCl detection and recognition thresholds were measured with and without a prior artificial raising of the level of adaptation by a molar salt mouthrinse. In both cases, it was found that an interstimulus procedure involving water mouthrinses yielded lower thresholds than a procedure with no rinses. These results were seen to be predicted from adaptation level changes. The literature was seen to confirm these results, while difficulties in threshold measurement were discussed.  相似文献

Four experiments are reported in which it is shown that elderly adults are more prone than young adults to olfactory adaptation and are slower to recover threshold sensitivity. The first three experiments differed in detail, but had in common an initial threshold determination for 1-butanol, a 30 s exposure to a concentration twenty-seven times threshold, followed by repeated presentation of the initial threshold level at various intervals after adaptation. In three experiments accuracy of forced-choice discrimination was poor immediately after adaptation but tended to improve with time, and considerably faster in the young than in the elderly. In the fourth experiment, groups of twenty-three elderly and twenty-five young subjects threshold-matched for pyridine were compared. The subjects participated in three sessions in which pyridine was infused into a test chamber at either 2.5, 1.25, or 0 L min-1 (sham session). At 2.5 L min-1 both groups were able to track the buildup of odor intensity during infusion and its decline after infusion. In contrast, at 1.25 L min-1 only the young were able to track odor intensity, even though the concentration rose above initial threshold levels.  相似文献

This experiment set out to examine the influence of two task variables (instructional procedure and goal specificity) on learning and problem-solving performance. A 2 × 2 between-subjects design was used. Twenty-four undergraduate students were asked to think aloud as they learned eight Word for Windows text editing operations, each implemented as a keyboard shortcut. Two instructional procedures were used, instructions presented either as lists or as paired statements. ''List'' groups required fewer trials than ''pairs'' groups to learn the operations, and relied more extensively upon rehearsal procedures, while ''pairs'' groups tended to use elaborative inference more frequently. Analyses of problem-solving solution times revealed no differences between the groups, although the no-goal groups tended to complete the tasks faster than the goal groups. Verbal protocols indicated that ''list'' groups tended to rely upon phonological cues to recover operation names, and made more phonological errors in recovering operation names. ''Pairs'' groups recalled more about the functions of the operations than the ''list'' groups. We conclude that different instructional procedures may lead to subtle, but important, differences in how information is encoded, represented, and recovered, and that individuals who perform to similar standards may not share the same understanding of the task in question.  相似文献
