The experiments assess the relationship between stimulus exposure duration and hemispheric asymmetries for global and local processing. Six durations (27, 40, 53, 67, 80, and 147 ms) were tested in a selective attention task in which hierarchical letterforms were presented unilaterally to the left or right visual field. The results indicated that left hemisphere-local asymmetries were demonstrated more often than right hemisphere-global asymmetries and that asymmetries were most commonly found in the middle range of durations tested. The pattern of results emphasizes the importance of further study into those conditions under which the predicted asymmetries can be reliably demonstrated in healthy individuals.  相似文献

Pigeons were provided with three keys. Pecking the center key produced grain on a schedule that alternated at unpredictable times between a variable-interval component and extinction. On concurrent variable-interval schedules, pecking either side key produced a stimulus associated with the variable-interval component on the center key provided that said schedule was currently in effect. The independent variable was the length of time this stimulus remained on the keys. Pecking one side key produced the stimulus for 27 seconds, whereas the duration produced by pecking the other key varied for successive blocks of sessions. For the first four birds, the values tested were 3, 9, 27, and 81 seconds. For the second group, numbering three birds, the values tested were 1, 3, 9, and 27 seconds. The dependent variable was the proportion of total side key pecks that occurred on the variable key. For all birds, the function was positive in slope and negative in acceleration. This finding supports a formulation that ascribes the maintenance of observing responses in a normal setting to the fact that the subject exposes itself to the positive discriminative stimulus for a longer mean duration than it does to the negative stimulus.  相似文献

These experiments examined the oblique effect in an adaptation paradigm. Reaction times (RT) to the presence of a grating test stimulus were obtained following adaptation to either a blank field or a grating of the same orientation as the test stimulus. Horizontal, vertical, and oblique test and adaptation orientations were employed. Test gratings were presented at several interstimulus intervals following offset of the adaptation stimulus. RTs following grating adaptation were elevated to a greater extent (relative to blank adaptation) for oblique then for horizontal or vertical stimuli, for two grating spatial frequencies. Differences in RT can be related to differences in sensitivity among channels responsible for detection of the various orientations.

Reaction time (RT) to the second of two stimuli presented in rapid succession was examined as a function of the intensity of the first stimulus (S1). It was found that the delay in RT2 was greater following a dim first stimulus than following a bright first stimulus. The magnitude of this increase corresponded to the difference in RTs to the two intensity levels of S1. These results support the prediction of a single channel model of response selection. Examination of mean first RTs revealed a general elevation in latency of RT. However, since this increase was not influenced by the inter-stimulus interval (ISI) or by the intensity of the second stimulus (S2), and since the same increase was found on “catch trials“ where no S2 was presented, this increase is considered to be a function of change in set in the double response situation.  相似文献

It was proposed that stimulus organization of a set of homogeneous items can best be measured by using the mean distance to nearest neighbours. Patterns of dots were generated that fell on four different positions along the cluster continuum, from highly regular, through random, to clustered. When thirty subjects were asked to judge numerosity, their estimates decreased significantly as cluster measures increased. Four possible interpretations of the effect of organization on numerosity perception are discussed.  相似文献
