During the second half of the 1st year, periods of increased sleep disruption have been documented alongside overall improvement in sleep–wake regulation. The objective of the present research was to test if pulling-to-stand (PTS), a milestone typically achieved during the latter part of the 1st year, co-occurs with a period of disrupted sleep. In a longitudinal design, 20 healthy infants were followed-up, from 7 to 11–12 months, at 3-week intervals. Each measurement consisted of filmed motor observations and sleep recordings (actigraphy), both conducted at home. It was found that among early achievers of PTS (by 8 months), the milestone was time-linked to a period of disrupted sleep. The results point to the significance of timing in the interplay between domains of development, and highlight the importance of considering both chronological and developmental metrics in studying changes in sleep–wake regulation.  相似文献

Interference control refers to the ability to selectively attend to certain information while ignoring distracting information. This ability can vary as a function of distractor relevance. Distractors that are particularly relevant to an individual may attract more attention than less relevant distractors. This is referred to as attention bias. Weak interference control and altered reward sensitivity are both important features of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, interference control is typically studied in isolation. This study integrates both. Youths (aged 9 to 17 years) with ADHD (= 37, 25 boys) and typically-developing controls (= 38, 20 boys) completed a Stroop task using appetitive words and matched neutral words to assess whether appetitive distractors diminished interference control more in youths with ADHD than controls. In order to test for specificity, aversive words were also included. As expected, appetitive words disrupted interference control but this effect was not stronger for youths with ADHD than the controls. Aversive words, on the other hand, facilitated interference control. Dimensional analyses revealed that this facilitation effect increased substantially as a function of ADHD symptom severity. Possible mechanisms for this effect include up-regulation of interference control as a function of induced negative mood, or as a function of increased effort. In conclusion, appetitive words do not lead to worse interference control in youths with ADHD compared with controls. Interference control was modulated in a valence-specific manner, concurrent with mood-induced effects on cognitive control.  相似文献

Patients with panic disorder (PD) show maladaptive coping but the role of coping in the pathogenesis of panic is unclear. This study examined general coping and panic-specific coping as predictors of fear responding to CO2 inhalation. Subjective and physiological responses including panic attacks were assessed in 45 patients with PD and 45 matched nonclinical controls. Measures of coping were the primary predictors used in the analyses. Consistent with other reports, patients with PD reported increased emotion-focused coping and there was an association between emotion-focused coping and subjective reactivity. However, only panic-specific coping predicted panic attacks in response to the CO2 challenge.  相似文献

Does trampolining and anaerobic physical fitness affect sleep?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The structure of nocturnal sleep of 16 volunteers, participating in the anaerobic sports of trampolining, dancing, and soccer, was monitored by means of polygraphic recordings. Since trampolining requires the acquisition of unfamiliar patterns of motor coordination, it can be considered as a special form of motor learning, whereas the acquisition of motor skills specific for dancing and soccer can be linked with motor patterns of normal biped locomotion. According to this view, an experimental group of 8 volunteers was formed; they participated in a training course of trampolining. In addition, a control group of 8 subjects was recruited, who engaged in one of the other two anaerobic sports. Subjects who had acquired new motor skills during a 13-wk. program in trampolining showed a statistically significant increase in REM-sleep. By contrast, the 8 subjects of the control group showed no considerable changes in REM-sleep. This suggests that efforts in acquiring new and complex motor patterns activate processes specifically involved in the generation of REM stage during nocturnal sleep.  相似文献

This study examined unique predictive associations of aggressive and hyperactive–inattentive behaviors in elementary school with high school graduation. The current study also investigated whether these associations were moderated by gender. At Time 1, 745 children in the 3rd through 5th grades completed peer ratings on their classmates’ disruptive behaviors. At Time 2, school records were reviewed to determine whether students graduated within four years of entering high school. Results showed that gender and hyperactivity-inattention are uniquely associated with high school graduation, but childhood aggression is not. Results also indicated that gender moderated associations between hyperactivity–inattention and graduation. Among boys, hyperactive–inattentive behaviors were not significantly associated with graduation, above and beyond aggression. In contrast, among girls, hyperactive–inattentive behaviors in childhood were significantly associated with graduation even after controlling for aggression. These findings suggest that in middle childhood, hyperactive–inattentive behaviors may be a more meaningful predictor of high school graduation than other forms of early disruptive behavior (e.g., aggression), especially for girls. Such findings could have significant implications for prevention and intervention programs designed to target children at risk for dropping out of school.  相似文献

Through structural equation modeling, this study tested a path of relations in which different levels of empathic responsiveness were posited to be differently associated to bullying and defending behavior. Three hundred and eighteen Italian adolescents (142 girls and 176 boys; mean age = 13.2 years) completed the Davis's Interpersonal Reactivity Index [Davis, 1983] for empathy and the Participant role scales [Salmivalli et al., 1996] for bullying and defending behavior. The results revealed that the model fitted the data adequately, but only in the case of boys. As hypothesized, low levels of empathic responsiveness were associated to students' involvement in bullying others. In contrast, empathy was positively associated with actively helping victimized schoolmates. However, the estimates algorithm did not reach convergence with girls' data. The current findings confirm and extend the literature on the relation between empathy, prosociality and aggressive behavior. Educational implications are also discussed.  相似文献

The behaviour of fetuses in utero is often described using terms that were originally devised to describe behaviour after birth. This article considers a definition of the states of coma, sleep, and wakefulness, using criteria that might equally be applied before and after birth. Current knowledge of behaviour of the sheep and human fetus is discussed in the light of such criteria. It is concluded that these species do not appear to be comatose in utero. Antidepressants constitute a central cornerstone in the treatment of depressive syndromes. In bipolar patients, however, there is an ongoing controversy about their usefulness for at least 3 decades. Early reports, mainly concerning tricyclic antidepressants, have repeatedly pointed toward unfavorable side effects on the course of the disorder, namely switching into (hypo)mania, induction of rapid cycling, and increased risk of suicide. Most evidence for both unfavorable and favorable effects has been deducted, thus far, from small studies with methodological flaws. More substantiated evidence only recently became available. From this it appears that, at least, the switch risk, and perhaps also the risk for rapid cycling and new-onset suicidality have been overinterpreted. At the same time, these new data raise doubt about the efficacy of antidepressants as a primary-treatment choice in bipolar depression.  相似文献

Toddlerhood is a sensitive period in the development of self-regulation, a set of adaptive skills that are fundamental to mental health and partly shaped by parenting. Healthy sleep is known to be critical for self-regulation; yet, the degree to which child sleep alters interactive child–parent processes remains understudied. This study examines associations between observed parenting and toddler self-regulation, with toddler sleep as a moderator of this association. Toddlers in low-income families (= 171) and their mothers were videotaped during free play and a self-regulation challenge task; videos were coded for mothers’ behavior and affect (free play) and toddlers’ self-regulation (challenge task). Mothers reported their child's nighttime sleep duration via questionnaire. Results revealed significant Sleep × Maternal Negative Affect and Sleep × Maternal Negative Control interactions. Children who did not experience negative parenting had good self-regulation regardless of their nighttime sleep duration. For children who did experience negative parenting, self-regulation was intact among those who obtained more nighttime sleep, but significantly poorer among children who were getting less nighttime sleep. Thus, among children who were reported to obtain less nighttime sleep, there were more robust associations between negative parenting and poorer self-regulation than among toddlers who were reported to obtain more sleep.  相似文献

Two hundred and sixty Swedish students attending grade 9 were given a semantic differential to measure their attitudes towards four countries, Sweden, West Germany, USA, and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union received significantly more unfavourable ratings on nearly all variables than the other countries, which received mainly favourable or neutral ones. Most interesting, the Soviet Union is rated as "enemy", whilst the other countries are rated as "friends". Implications for peace education are discussed.  相似文献

In this review, we examine the prevalence of negative body image and disordered eating behaviors (i.e., excessive dieting, binge eating, inappropriate weight loss techniques) in children and adolescents. We also explore correlates and predictors of the development of these problems, including individual, familial, and social factors, as well as discuss factors that may serve a protective function. In addition, we critically evaluate the psychoeducational programs that have been developed to prevent the onset of these problems and reduce the severity of symptoms in children and adolescents. Moreover, we suggest several possible strategies for how such prevention programs can be modified to enhance their efficacy. Finally, likely moderator and mediator variables of the effectiveness of such programs are proposed.  相似文献

This study assessed trauma-related sequelae of 56 highly anxious patients attending a dental fear clinic. It was also examined whether such symptomatology interferes with anxiety reduction in response to a cognitive-behavioral treatment approach. About 34 patients (59%) indicated that they had experienced one or more aversive dental events that could explain the onset of their dental anxiety. There was no difference between the dental anxiety scores of patients who reported such a background and those who did not. Severity of trauma-related symptomatology was indexed by the Impact of Event Scale (IES). The mean IES score of patients with a traumatically induced dental fear was remarkably high (33.0; SD=19.7). Furthermore, there was a strong direct relationship between severity of trauma-related symptomatology and severity of dental anxiety (shared variance was 38%). Two patients (10%) met all DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on the basis of the Self-Rating Scale for PTSD. However, no evidence was found to suggest that either a traumatic background, or level of trauma-related symptomatology, has a negative effect on treatment outcome.  相似文献

In many parts of the world, drivers with serious sleep disorders have restrictions on their licence – with the fitness-to-drive criteria varying across licensing jurisdictions. This study aimed to systematically review the literature that evaluated the available scientific evidence for the relationship between sleep disorders and two driving safety outcome measures: (i) motor vehicle crashes (MVC) and (ii) on-road driving test outcome. This review was registered with PROSPERO in July 2019 (see CRD42019144643). A systematic search of public health, psychology and transport databases was conducted on November 8th, 2019. The quality of evidence for each study was rated using the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Quality Assessment tools. Thirty-nine studies published between 1976 and 2015 met the inclusion criteria (n = 9 case-control; n = 24 cohort/cross-sectional; n = 6 before-after). Overall, the quality of evidence for 22 studies was rated as ‘good’, nine as ‘fair’ and eight as ‘poor’. Included studies addressed: sleep apnoea and sleep-related breathing disorders (n = 35); central disorders of hypersomnolence and narcolepsy (n = 5), and insomnia (n = 2), with some studies covering multiple sleep disorders. Of the thirty-five studies specifically investigating MVC risk associated with sleep apnoea, eighteen studies reported an increased risk (n = 11 ‘good’, n = 4 ‘fair’, n = 3 ‘poor’ quality), seven reported no difference in risk (n = 3 ‘good’, n = 4 ‘fair’ quality), and two provided inconclusive findings (n = 1 ‘good’, n = 1 ‘fair’ quality). Most studies suggested that increased sleep apnoea severity was associated with an increased MVC risk. Furthermore, untreated sleep apnoea was predominantly associated with increased risk, whilst decreased risk was associated with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) treatments. Five studies (n = 3 ‘good’, n = 2 ‘fair’ quality) investigated MVC risk associated with disorders of hypersomnolence and narcolepsy, and all reported increased risk. Only two studies investigated MVC risk associated with insomnia, with inconsistent findings: one reporting increased MVC risk (‘good’) and one reporting no difference (‘fair’). Regarding impacts on on-road driving test outcome, our comprehensive search found no studies investigating the association between sleep disorders and this driving safety outcome measure. Notwithstanding the limitations of the included studies, the weight of evidence suggests a moderately elevated MVC risk for drivers with sleep disorders (sleep apnoea; hypersomnia and narcolepsy), with the majority reporting around two and a half times higher risk, and lower risk with treatment. This evidence is consistent with current fitness-to-drive guidelines, most of which specify licence restrictions conditional upon severity, treatment compliance and effective response to treatment. The generalisability of the findings is limited as many identified studies had methodological limitations, were conducted across a wide time period, in numerous licensing jurisdictions with different requirements, and across a diverse range of participant populations. A large-scale, population-based controlled study, in multiple licensing jurisdictions with equivalent licensing and fitness-to-drive requirements, is warranted to rigorously investigate MVC risk and sleep disorders, including evaluating the possible benefit of therapies.  相似文献

Mental health problems have long been linked to antisocial behaviors. Despite an impressive body of literature demonstrating this relationship and claims that comorbidity matters, few studies examine comorbidity using multiple distinct mental health indicators, with most studies instead adopting single or composite mental health measures. This study tested separate and comorbid effects of five DSM‐oriented mental health issues on self‐reported violence using a community‐based sample of Chicago youths from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods. Moreover, it utilized both primary caregiver and youth self‐reports of psychopathology across four developmental stages of childhood and adolescence. When examined separately, the results indicated affective/depressive, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity, and oppositional defiant/antisocial personality problems independently predicted violence. When considering comorbidity, however, only oppositional defiant and antisocial personality problems significantly predicted violence at any stage, regardless of informant type. BackgroundReaction time to initiate upper limb movement and movement time to place hands on the landing surface may be important factors in forward fall landing and impact, contributing to injury reduction. The aim was to investigate the relationship of physical function and upper body strength to upper limb reaction and movement time in older female participants.Methods75 female participants (72 ± 8 yrs) performed 5 arm response trials. Reaction time (signal to initiation of movement), and movement time (initial movement to contact), were collected using 3D motion capture. Additional variables were: handgrip; sit-to-stand; shoulder flexion and elbow extension strength measured by hand-held dynamometry; one-legged balance; fall risk; and physical activity scores. Prediction variables for reaction and movement time were determined in separate backward selection multiple regression analyses. Significance was set at P < 0.05.FindingsSignificant regression equations for RT (r2 = 0.08, P = 0.013) found a relationship between stronger handgrip (Beta = −0.002) and faster reaction time, accounting for 8% variance. For movement time (r2 = 0.06, P = 0.036) greater shoulder flexion strength (Beta = −0.04) was related to faster movement time, explaining 6% variance. Stronger SF strength was related to a decrease in MT by 4%.DiscussionA relationship between arm strength measures and faster upper body reaction and movement time was shown, with 10–20% higher strength associated with a 5% faster response time. Even though this was a relatively weak relationship, given that strength is a modifiable component this provides a potential avenue for future intervention efforts. This in turn could have an impact on forward fall landing and potential reduction of injury risk.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether immediate gains in reading fluency achieved during repeated reading of text can predict long‐term reading development over and above traditional predictors of reading development. Eighty‐one Grade 3 children read texts three times consecutively and were instructed either to read as quickly as possible (speed‐focused repeated reading), or to retell the text afterwards (meaning‐focused repeated reading). Measures of text reading fluency, sentence reading fluency, and text comprehension were administered to the children in Grades 3 and 4 to assess their reading development over time. The results indicate that children's immediate response to repeated reading can contribute to the prediction of their development of reading fluency over time. Even after controlling for individual differences in general cognitive ability, word reading fluency, rapid automatized naming, and vocabulary, the experimental measure with meaning‐focused repeated reading remained a significant predictor.  相似文献
