The aim of this paper is to present and discuss main philosophical ideas concerning logic and mathematics of a significant but forgotten Polish philosopher Benedykt Bornstein. He received his doctoral degree with Kazimierz Twardowski but is not included into the Lvov–Warsaw School of Philosophy founded by the latter. His philosophical views were unique and quite different from the views of main representatives of Lvov–Warsaw School. We shall discuss Bornstein’s considerations on the philosophy of geometry, on the infinity, on the foundations of set theory and his polemics with Stanis?aw Le?niewski as well as his conception of a geometrization of logic, of the categorial logic and of the mathematics of quality. 相似文献

The main purpose of this article is to show that the essence of Mozi’s political theory, namely that a civil state is in its best or ideal condition when each citizen exercises universal care (jian ai 兼愛), is more defensible than it is usually thought to be. Doing this will require an exposition of the main features of his theory and occasionally reference arguments and considerations outside of Mozi’s text. We interpret the disagreement between Mozi and his alleged Confucian opponents as a disagreement about the nature of political obligation: Confucians regard political service as a kind of noncontractual role obligation, while Mozi regards it as an obligation derivable from universal and impartial moral principles. 相似文献

In this paper I attempt to capture the essence of Nelson Pike’s contribution to the philosophy of religion. My summary of
his insights will revolve around three general topics: omniscience (and in particular its relation to human freedom), omnipotence (and in particular its relation to the existence of human suffering), and mysticism (with a focus on the question of whether and in what sense mystic visions can be sources of knowledge). Although the details
vary in interesting ways, his work on these topics largely consists of recognizing an important challenge to the viability
of the relevant doctrine or framework, sharpening that challenge by presenting it in a more forceful way, and then offering
and assessing potential responses. Pike’s writings are characterized by exemplary rigor and relentless clarity, and together
they constitute a rich (and under-appreciated) source of insight. 相似文献

This paper compares Frege’s philosophy of mathematics with a naturalistic and nominalistic philosophy of mathematics developed in Ye (2010a, 2010b, 2010c, 2011), and it defends the latter against the former. The paper focuses on Frege’s account of the applicability of mathematics in the sciences and his conceptual realism. It argues that the naturalistic and nominalistic approach fares better than the Fregean approach in terms of its logical accuracy and clarity in explaining the applicability of mathematics in the sciences, its ability to reveal the real issues in explaining human epistemic and semantic access to objects, its prospect for resolving internal difficulties and developing into a full-fledged theory with rich details, as well its consistency with other areas of our scientific knowledge. Trivial criticisms such as “Frege is against naturalism here and therefore he is wrong” will be avoided as the paper tries to evaluate the two approaches on a neutral ground by focusing on meta-theoretical features such as accuracy, richness of detail, prospects for resolving internal issues, and consistency with other knowledge. The arguments in this paper apply not merely to Frege’s philosophy. They apply as well to all philosophies that accept a Fregean account of the applicability of mathematics or accept conceptual realism. Some of these philosophies profess to endorse naturalism. 相似文献

Children’s literature was first published in the eighteenth century at a time when the philosophical ideas of Jean-Jacques
Rousseau on education and childhood were being discussed. Ironically, however, the first generation of children’s literature
(by Maria Edgeworth et al) was incongruous with Rousseau’s ideas since the works were didactic, constraining and demanded passive acceptance from their
readers. This instigated a deficit or reductionist model to represent childhood and children’s literature as simple and uncomplicated
and led to children’s literature being overlooked and its contribution to philosophical discussions being undermined. Although
Rousseau advocates freeing the child to develop, he does not feel that reading fiction promotes child development, which is
a weakness in an otherwise strong argument for educational reform. Yet, rather ironically, the second generation of children’s
writers, from Lewis Carroll onwards, more truly embraced Rousseau’s broader philosophical ideas on education and childhood
than their predecessors, encouraging and freeing readers to imagine, reflect and actively engage in ontological enquiry. The
emphasis had changed with the child being embraced in education and society as active participant rather than passive or disengaged
recipient. Works deemed to be seminal to the canon of children’s literature such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan and The Chronicles of Narnia challenge readers to work through conflicts many of which can be identified retrospectively as exhibiting postmodern characteristics.
By exploring moral and spiritual dilemmas in their writing, Carroll, Barrie and Lewis’s works can be regarded as contributing
to discussions on theodical postmodernism. The successes of The Lord of the Rings and Narnia films suggest that there is an interest in exploring moral dilemmas, fulfilling a need (perhaps for tolerance
and understanding) in society at large. Children’s literature has an almost divine power to restore, to repair and to heal,
all characteristics of theodical postmodernism but differing from the more widely held conception of postmodernism which pulls
apart, exacerbates and exposes. Children’s literature therefore offers a healthy and constructive approach to working through
moral dilemmas. In their deconstruction of childhood, these authors have brought children’s literature closer to aspects of
enquiry traditionally found in the domain of adult mainstream literature. As the boundaries between childhood and adulthood
become more fluid, less certain, debate is centring around whether the canon of children’s literature itself has become redundant
or meaningless since there are no longer any restrictions on which subjects can be treated in children’s literature. Despite
the fact that children’s literature clearly engages with difficult issues, it continues to be left out of the critical equation,
not given serious attention, disregarded as simplistic and ignored in contemporary philosophical discussions concerning morality,
postmodernism and the future of childhood. With children’s literature coming closer to mainstream literature, and exhibiting
prominent features of postmodernism, however, it is only a matter of time before philosophical discussions actively engage
with children’s literature and recognise its contribution to the resolution and reconciliation of ontological dilemmas. When
this occurs, philosophy and children’s literature will re-engage, enriching contemporary investigations of existence, ethics
and knowledge and fruitfully developing thought in these areas. This paper aims to contribute to this process.

Although there has been a resurgence of interest in virtue ethics, there has been little work done on how this translates into the political sphere. This essay demonstrates that the Confucian thinker Xunzi offers a model of virtue politics that is both interesting in its own right and potentially useful for scholars attempting to develop virtue ethics into virtue politics more generally. I present Xunzi’s version of virtue politics and discuss challenges to this version of virtue politics that are raised by the Legalist thinker Han Fei. I show that not only is Xunzi’s virtue politics capable of surviving the challenges raised by his contemporary, he offers an account that is in many ways both attractive and plausible, one that may usefully be brought into conversation with contemporary visions of virtue politics. 相似文献

This essay considers the philosophical and theological significance of the phenomenological analysis of Christian faith offered
by the early Heidegger. It shows, first, that Heidegger poses a radical and controversial challenge to philosophers by calling
them to do without God in an unfettered pursuit of the question of being (through his ‘destruction of onto-theology’); and,
second, that this exclusion nonetheless leaves room for a form of philosophical reflection upon the nature of faith and discourse
concerning God, namely for a philosophy of religion in a phenomenological mode (as exemplified most clearly in Heidegger’s 1920/21 lectures on the phenomenology of religious life). However, it is argued
that the theological roots of Heidegger’s own phenomenological analyses subvert his frequently asserted claim concerning the
incompatibility of Christian faith and philosophical inquiry. 相似文献

ABSTRACTIn The Essence of Human Freedom, Heidegger suggests that Kant’s idea of pure will and Heidegger’s own idea of resoluteness are rooted in the same experience of demand from our own essence. This experience can unfold, I argue, through twofold self-understanding: first, the primordial self-understanding on the existentiell level that results in the indefiniteness of pure will (or resoluteness), as Heidegger’s phenomenological reading of Kant (or his own existential analysis) presents; and second, the practical self-understanding on the rational level that results in the principle of morality, as Kant’s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals demonstrates. Based on this approach, if we accept Heidegger’s phenomenological interpretation of pure will but do not follow his rejection of the categorical imperative formulas, we can achieve a Heideggerian revision of Kant’s original justification of morality while avoiding Kant’s problematic assumption that the authentic self belongs to the intelligible realm. 相似文献

Hegel’s philosophy of history is fundamentally concerned with how shapes of life collapse and transition into new shapes of life. One of the distinguishing features of Hegel’s concern with how a shape of life falls apart and becomes inadequate is the role that habit plays in the transition. A shape of life is an embodied form of existence for Hegel. The animating concepts of a shape of life are affectively inscribed on subjects through complex cultural processes. This paper examines the argument Hegel puts forward in his Lectures on the Philosophy of World History for why civilizations come to atrophy and examines the decisive role habit plays in this process. The paper concludes with a discussion of the way in which the central role of second nature in historical transitions and norm formation conflicts with Brandom’s account of norm formation in Hegel’s thought. 相似文献

The present paper analyzes consistencies between the philosophical systems of David Hume and B. F. Skinner, focusing on their conceptualization of causality and attitudes about scientific behavior. The ideas that Hume initially advanced were further developed in Skinner’s writings and shaped the behavior-analytic approach to scientific behavior. Tracing Skinner’s logical antecedents allows for additional historical and philosophical clarity when examining the development of radical behaviorism. 相似文献

The work by Demuth et al. (Integrative Psychological and Bahavioral Science 45:1–20, 2011) is very important in the scenario of transcultural research, as it goes beyond the specific contexts of India and Germany.
They successfully explored the dialogic relation between remembered autobiography, the self and the culture from a trans-generational
development perspective, managing to identify common and unique processes of each culture. I, however, using a dynamical systems
approach, present a supplementary way to the one chosen in the study, with the goal of analyzing how these new perspectives
might contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon. The dynamical systems is a perspective sensitive to non-linearity
of phenomena and interested in understanding how processes emerge, as it may be useful to analyze the family as a dynamical
system under constant interaction with other systems, which makes the emergence of the self, possible. Besides, it would enable
the identification of trajectories that individuals build over time, the moments of change and variability, as well as identifying
different types of patterns in the process of construction of the self. 相似文献

Since China’s reform and opening up in 1978, the study of Chinese philosophy has proceeded together with the times, not only making tremendous academic progress, but also serving as an important part of research on Chinese culture that undertakes the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and Chinese culture. This essay gives a brief review of the study of Chinese philosophy over the last forty years with particular attention to five aspects, namely the new horizons in the study of Chinese philosophy, the characteristics of Chinese philosophy, the comparison between Chinese and Western philosophy that also involves the “legitimacy” of the former, the relevance of Chinese philosophy for contemporary times, and the basic methodologies of Chinese philosophy. 相似文献

The purpose of the article is to present the outlines of the reception and the influence of Heidegger’s philosophy on the territory of former Yugoslavia. This reception and influence were in their essence co-conditioned by specific political, social and cultural circumstances in the region, which were throughout accompanied by “the syndrome of dehumanization”. The confrontation with Heidegger’s philosophy is therefore co-defined by the profoundly experienced crisis of European humanity. During both world wars the attempt of an overcoming of this crisis of humanity by the means of phenomenological and existentialist philosophy was the main focus of attention. The period after the Second World War is denoted by the linking of Marxism with Heidegger’s attempt to surpass philosophy as metaphysics through the perspective of the history of being; in this context we specifically discuss the Praxis philosophical school and the original philosophical thought of Vanja Sutli?. During the disintegration of Yugoslavia and in the period thereafter, besides the intensive appropriation of Heidegger’s thought through translations and interpretations, which also led to the thorough study of Slavic philosophical terminologies, post-Heideggerian ways of thinking came to the fore, together with the possibility for a new humanization within the wider European and global social framework. 相似文献
