Women are more likely than men to experience depression, and they are particularly vulnerable to depression during the postpartum period. Postpartum depression is distinguished from normal postpartum adjustment, postpartum blues, and postpartum psychosis. Biological, psychodynamic, and diathesis-stress perspectives on postpartum depression are described. Counselors are encouraged to fashion individualized treatments for postpartum depression that are matched to the stressors and vulnerabilities of their clients.  相似文献

This study sought to determine if counselor use of self-experience may be useful in increasing self-confidence, self-disclosure, perceived genuineness, and empathic understanding. Volunteer graduate students in education interested in participating in a series of group counseling sessions structured to deal with problems of the graduate student were used in this study. 30 graduate students were divided into 6 groups of 5 each. 3 groups were experimental groups and 3 groups were control groups. In the control groups self-experience examples were not used by the counselor, but in the experimental groups they were used extensively. Questionnaires, taped sessions, and post-counseling interviews were used in evaluation of results. The experimental groups perceived the counseling relationship as less genuine than the control groups. The results of the study did not support the use of counselor self-experience examples in group counseling.  相似文献

Awareness of depression in the differential diagnosis of Alzheimer disease is essential for genetic counselors seeing patients at risk for early-onset familial Alzheimer disease (EOFAD). The genetic counselor is in a unique position to recognize depression as the cause of symptoms mimicking early-onset Alzheimer disease. While generating a family medical history, the counselor can evoke significant emotional history as well. Based on this information, appropriate referrals can be given for neurological and psychological evaluation. The counselor also serves to explain EOFAD and the benefits and limitations of genetic testing for each individual patient. Whether or not patients choose testing, they can benefit from correct diagnosis of troublesome, or even debilitating, symptoms that imitate symptoms of the feared hereditary disease.  相似文献

Path-referenced assessment is considered as an innovative attempt to move closer to the sought-after goal of making assessment directly relevant to instructional concerns of all learners including the handicapped. The technology of this rapidly developing form of assessment allows determination to be made about educational progress of learners resulting from instruction. The school counselors struggle for role identity still continues. The counselor's commitment to counseling pupils is being questioned by those with a sociological view of the counselor's role. Several writers suggest that the counselor's role be changed so that the counselor will function as a “cultural architect” or “social engineer.” The main thesis of this article is that the facilitation of human potentiality calls for a complementary approach to the resolution of school and pupil problems and not the diminution and prostitution of one role for another. A serious problem facing counselors in today's schools is the increasing number of youth who are alienated from their schools. In dealing with this situation, counselors frequently regard it as one which stems from a dysfunction within the individual student; although this may be true in some cases, it is the thesis of this article that the problem often stems from the structure of the school. The theoretical background and causes of alienation in today's youth are discussed. Given the importance of the clinical interview, the purpose of this article is to provide recommendations for the assessment and diagnosis of eating disorders that (a) specifically focus on assessment in the context of a clinical interview and (b) can be used by counselors whether or not they specialize in eating disorder treatment.  相似文献
