Large circular displays rotating around the line of sight produce an illusion in which the seen orientation of the true vertical is shifted in a direction opposite to the display’s motion. Two experiments were performed to determine whether the magnitude of this illusory tilt is a function of the area of display elements, of their boundary length, or of their spatial frequency. In Experiment 1, 12 subjects viewed each of nine displays across which the number and area of the circular elements were independently varied. Three of the displays were equated for the area of their elements. The results suggested that tilt magnitude and onset latency could be explained by a boundary length effect. A second experiment tested eight subjects on two displays, equated for element boundary length but differing in the spatial frequency of the elements. The displays produced closely similar illusory trite corroborating the view that, within broad limits, element boundary length—and not spatial frequency or area—determines the size and onset latency of illusory tilt. A third experiment confirmed previous research in finding greater tilt and more rapid onset with more peripherally projected displays.  相似文献

Abstract

The type and frequency of grain boundaries, the so-called grain boundary character distribution (GBCD), has been determined in rapidly solidified and subsequently annealed Fe-6·5 mass% Si alloy ribbon by the scanning electron microscopy-electron channelling pattern (SEM-ECP) technique. High frequencies of low-angle boundaries and coincidence boundaries with Σ3, Σ9, Σ11, Σ17 and Σ19 were observed in a fully annealed ribbon with well defined {110} texture. The total frequency of low-angle boundaries and coincidence boundaries is almost one-half of all grain boundaries. The coincidence boundaries which occurred more frequently are exactly those predicted theoretically from the coincidence orientations for 〈110〉 rotation in cubic crystals, similar to those observed previously in {100} textured ribbons of the same alloy produced by the same processing method. The presence of a close relationship between the type of texture and GBCD has been confirmed by experiment on differently textured ribbons of the same material.  相似文献

The mechanisms of failure of symmetrical tilt boundaries have been investigated using an atomistic technique. The fracture process advances in steps that are related to the structural unit of the symmetrical tilt grain boundary. These boundaries are shown to fail through a combined mechanism involving dislocation emission in certain regions of the structural unit, followed by microcleavage, and again dislocation emission. The overall toughness of the boundaries is given by the combination of the toughness of these two processes.  相似文献

The loss of coherency of interphase boundaries in two-phase titanium alloys during deformation was analyzed. The energy of the undeformed interphase boundary was first determined by means of the van der Merwe model for stepped interfaces. The subsequent loss of coherency was ascribed to the increase of interphase energy due to absorption of lattice dislocations and was quantified by a relation similar to the Read–Shockley equation for low-angle boundaries in single-phase alloys. It was found that interphase boundaries lose their coherency by a strain of approximately 0.5 at T = 800°C.  相似文献

Small-angle symmetric [001] tilt grain boundaries in cubic zirconia bicrystals with misorientation angles 2θ =1.0° and 2θ =5.0° have been fabricated by diffusion bonding. High-resolution electron microscopy observations revealed that the 1.0° boundary consists of a periodic array of mixed dislocations with Burgers vector b =( a /2)[101] or b = ( a /2)[101], while the 5.0° boundary consists of a periodic array of edge dislocations with Burgers vector b = ( a /2)[100], associated with stacking faults at alternate intervals. This suggests that there is a critical angle for structural transitions in the series of the [001] small-angle tilt grain boundaries.  相似文献

We have combined high-angle annular dark field/scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) tomography with bright field (BF)-TEM tomography to characterize small inclusions of Pb at a grain boundary in Al. It was found that the shape of the grain boundary inclusions is more complex than previously thought. By using moiré fringes observed at some orientations of the specimen in a BF-TEM tomographic tilt series, we were able to determine the orientation of each grain, the axis and angle of misorientation of the grain boundary, and the facet planes of the grain boundary inclusions. The 3D shape of the inclusions was determined by merging this information with the HAADF-STEM tomography.  相似文献

Microstructural characteristics of an experimental Ni-based superalloy with boron addition subjected to a long-term ageing treatment were systematically investigated by various kinds of transmission electron microscopy technique. Based on detailed electron diffraction analyses, we found that there are many nanosized M5B3 precipitates in our long-term ageing alloys, which keeps a good orientation relationship with the γ/γ′ matrix. Furthermore, the precipitation characteristics of M5B3 phase were clarified. It is found that the M5B3-type boride prefers to precipitate at the γ/γ′ interfaces and low-angle grain boundaries. These interfacial nanosized precipitates can play the role of pinning effect and are expected to be advantageous for postponing the γ′ rafting and low-angle grain boundary migration to some extent at high temperature.  相似文献

The electronic properties of an Al = 9 tilt grain boundary with segregated Na and Ca impurity atoms have been calculated by a first-principles pseudopotential method. The results show that the boundary expands and the charge density decreases significantly over the whole boundary by the segregation of Na and Ca, and there are no stronger bonds than those associated with metallic bonding in the boundary even with the impurities. It is concluded that the embrittlement promotion mechanism by Na or Ca segregation in the Al boundaries is one kind of 'decohesion model'.  相似文献

The atomic structure and chemical composition of a =3, [110]/{111} symmetric tilt grain boundary in an yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia bicrystal has been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and nanoprobe energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The experimental HRTEM images are compared with simulated images for a model obtained by lattice statics calculations. It is found that the grain boundary has two individual mirror symmetrical planes in cation and anion sublattices. In this case, the cations are forced to form sevenfold coordination in the vicinity of the boundary owing to the restraint of the boundary structure, while the cations in the cubic fluorite structure have eightfold coordination. The segregation of yttrium ions was experimentally detected at the = 3 boundary, a finding that is considered to be closely related to the change in the local coordination at the boundary.  相似文献

Grain-boundary and interface migration during phase transformation in zinc oxide nanometre-gained polycrystals have been observed by dynamic highresolution transmission electron microscopy. The migration of a [21.0] tilt grain boundary was found to proceed by the shift of ledges corresponding to the structural units of the boundary. The phase transformed from a wurtzite to a zincblende structure after the migration of the interface. The interface migration also proceeded by the shift of ledges on it. The product of the lattice misfits at the grain boundary and interface along two directions was reduced from 5.2 to 1.0% after the grain-boundary migration and phase transformation.  相似文献

Abstract

A critique of the structural unit model is presented. It is shown that the predictive capacity of the model is severely limited when it is applied to boundaries with relatively-high-index rotation axes. Recent computer simulations suggest that ‘high index’ means 〈221〉 and above. A new approach to grain boundary structure is needed for mixed tilt and twist boundaries.  相似文献

The electrostatic potential and associated space charge across a 24°, [001] tilt boundary of SrTiO3 ceramic have been determined using electron holography. The results reveal a positive charged interface with a negative space charge on either side. The form of the double Schottky barrier and the local charge-density distribution at the interface are derived from the results.  相似文献

The author discusses the clinical and ethical issues in enactments that are interwoven between relational therapy and supervision as described in the case illustration. The tendency to focus on enactments involving physical action risks obscuring attention to psychological boundary crossings that can be equally harmful. The current maternal tilt in psychoanalysis can unwittingly lead analysts and supervisors to avoid confrontation and analysis of hostility and aggression, thereby inhibiting the working through of intense negative transference and countertransference. The similarities and differences between supervision and treatment are discussed in terms of maintaining responsible boundaries.  相似文献

The atomic structure of the cores of the dislocations forming a [110] tilt boundary of 10o misorientation in a BaTiO3 film is characterized by means of focal-series reconstruction. Along the small-angle grain boundary, facets with different inclinations are accompanied by different types of dislocation. The dislocation with a Burgers vector of a [001] appears as a perfect edge type. Those with a Burgers vector of a [111] are dissociated into three partials with a Burgers vector of (a/3)[111], leading to two segments of stacking faults. Structural models of these dislocation cores are suggested on the basis of the phase of the reconstructed wavefunction and tested by simulation of the wavefunction.  相似文献

Abstract

The Rodrigues method, formulated first as a geometrical construction and later in vector notation, provides a simple and direct means of visualizing and calculating the total rotation resulting from two sequential rotations. In this paper the case of the five degrees of freedom for a grain boundary are considered. The Rodrigues method is applicable since the total misorientation is a tilt followed by a twist rotation, and calculations are much simplified since vectors rather than matrices are involved.  相似文献

Visual orientation judgments were made during right head tilt, left body tilt, and left trunk tilt, each of 30 deg. In these postures the otolith, neck, and trunk systems are stimulated in pairs. The hypothesis that the visual vertical during trunk tilt is equal to the algebraic sum ofthose in the same direction ofbody tilt and the opposite head tilt was tested and accepted. This result demonstrates the interaction of these postural systems in visual orientation, and complements the confirmation of the same hypothesis for the visual aftereffect following prolonged tilt.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to determine whether kinaesthetic after-effects, measured by settings of a bar to the horizontal, are controlled by the apparent or the physical tilt of the bar during inspection. Two arrangements were used to induce a discrepancy between apparent and physical tilt. Data obtained with one arrangement did not permit a proper test of the issue. With the other arrangement either distorted or undistorted visual information about tilt was present during kinaesthetic inspection. It was found that post-inspection settings were displaced from pre-inspection settings in the direction of the tilt of the inspection figure when there was no discrepancy between information presented by the two modalities. When there was a discrepancy, the displacements attributable to apparent tilt were in the direction opposite to the apparent tilt of the inspection figure. The former effects dissipated rapidly after inspection; the latter did not. It is suggested that after-effects obtained following an inspection period during which there is no discrepancy between physical and apparent tilt are controlled by the physical tilt of the inspection figure and that apparent tilt, when it is an effective variable, operates by modifying the judgemental frame of reference.  相似文献

Visual judgments of orientation were investigated during (effect) and after (aftereffect) different body postures. In Experiment 1 four trained Ss made apparent verticality (AV) judgments before and after 2 min in each of seven orientations: head tilt left and right, body tilt left and right, trunk tilt left and right and a control condition with head ’and body upright. The aftereffect was significant for all postures excepting trunk tilt left and the control. The aftereffect from head tilt was greater than that from the same degree of body tilt, and that in the trunk tilt condition was in the same direction as’ predicted from neck stimulation. In Experiment 2, 30 Ss made AV judgments during tilt in the same seven postures. The E-phenomenon resulted from both head and body tilts, and an effect was found for trunk tilt in the direction predicted from neck stimulation. The results are discussed in terms of the otolith, neck, and trunk receptor systems.  相似文献

This study investigates the relative contribution of body parts in the elaboration of a whole-body egocentric attraction phenomenon previously observed during earth-based judgments. This was addressed through a particular earth-based task requiring estimating the possibility of passing under a projected line, imagining a forward horizontal displacement. Different postural configurations were tested, involving whole-body tilt, trunk tilt alone or head tilt alone. Two legs positions relative to the trunk were manipulated. Results showed systematic deviations of the subjective “passability” toward the tilt, linearly related to the tilt magnitude. For each postural configuration, the egocentric influence appeared to be highly dependent on the position of trunk and head axes, whereas the legs position appeared not relevant. When compared to the whole-body tilt condition, tilting the trunk alone consistently reduced the amount of the deviation toward the tilt, whereas tilting the head alone consistently increased it. Our results suggest that several specific effects from multiple body parts can account for the global deviation of the estimates observed during whole-body tilt. Most importantly, we support that the relative contribution of the body segments could mainly depend on a reweighting process, probably based on the reliability of sensory information available for a particular postural set.  相似文献

The Stoffregen and Riccio (1988) hypothesis that perceived orientation is determined primarily by balance dynamics was tested. Perception of orientation was evaluated in the context of a task that required Ss to control the roll orientation of a device in which they were seated. The device's direction of balance was manipulated across trials and thus was independent of gravity. Eighteen Ss participated in the investigation. After each trial, Ss estimated their mean tilt with respect to upright. Correlations of perceived tilt with tilt from balance were consistently higher than the correlations with gravity tilt. The dominance of balance over gravity depended on the magnitude of tilt from balance.  相似文献
