Apparatus for measurement of acoustic startle response in mice is described. The technique utilizes a spring suspended lever, commercially available strain-gauge transducer, and polygraph. Individual startle responses are recorded as upward (flexion) and downward (extension) pen deflections, the force of either component being linearly related to the amplitude of the vertical pen deflections. The apparatus, with minor modifications, may be used to measure startle responses in larger rodents.  相似文献

Apparatus for recording manual target pointing localizations is described. The device, utilizing a position transducer and digital voltmeter, is capable of determining the position of either manual limb when localizing visual and/or auditory targets. The pointing localizations involve naturalistic limb movements made in a relatively unrestricted manner. The apparatus has the advantages of rapid accurate measurement, reliability, ease of reading, and the potential for automatic recording. When used for research involving adaptation to sensory rearrangement, there is the further advantage that the dependent measures are obtained in the same context as during exposure to the rearrangement.  相似文献

The critical current densities of superconducting thin films and their dependence on the film structural characteristics has been a major research interest for more than a decade. Controlling this relationship is crucial if large-scale high-quality YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 (YBCO) tapes are to be produced. Two major keystones of information have been established in this field. Firstly, there is a direct relationship between the critical current density and the grain-boundary angle in polycrystalline YBCO films. Grain boundaries with a mismatch angle higher than 5° usually result in reduced critical current densities. This detrimental effect of large-angle grain boundaries to the quality of YBCO films has been attributed to strain fields resulting from such grain boundaries. Secondly, the quality of the YBCO film can be enhanced by straining its lattice in specific direction. Here, we report, for the first time, direct experimental results coupling local grain orientation and local strain maps of thin YBCO films deposited on a (001) biaxially textured nickel substrate. These results were correlated to the quality of the film and showed how grain structure in the nickel substrate affects the grain structure in the YBCO films even in the presence of several buffer layers. More importantly, the data show that highquality films with high critical current densities can be produced, in spite of large-angle grain boundaries, if the film is compressed in the range of 0.5% strain normal to the a axis.  相似文献

Apparatus and procedures for shock-avoidance conditioning of the albino rabbit in the rotator are described. Differences in speed of conditioning, in number of CR’s, and in the form of the acquisition curve are examined for data obtained in a study of two groups of 100 rabbits each, which were given different numbers of conditioning trials in the daily test-periods. Training proceeded to the same criterion of conditioning. Although there were no significant differences in the mean numbers of trials needed to attain the criterion, there were significant differences in the variances of the two distributions and both the numbers of CR’s and the forms of the acquisition curves were significantly different for the two groups.  相似文献

A simple inexpensive IBM I/O Selectric typewriter controller is described. The board plugs into an RS-232 port and enables letter-quality output. Computers with editing capabilities can therefore be used as word processors for as little as $35, about 8 h of labor, and the cost of the typewriter. The controller is a firmware-governed microprocessor, and as a result, it is easily tailored for special applications. Hardware and software are discussed.  相似文献

Object discriminations have traditionally been presented to monkeys by hand in the Wisconsin General Test Apparatus. This method is time-consuming and prone to various kinds of experimenter error. It has proved possible to administer object discriminations automatically by using a modification of the Gloster Saro VM 51 vending machine. This machine, which has space for up to 371 objects, moves them on trays by two electric motors, and the control circuits of these are adapted for external operation by relays and modular programming equipment. A series of simple object discriminations or a concurrent (serial) discrimination task can then be given by remote control. The objects are so treated that by touching either of them the animal completes a circuit, enabling the response to be recorded and appropriately reinforced. Learning in the apparatus seems to be about as efficient as in the Wisconsin General Test Apparatus.  相似文献

High-pressure torsion (HPT) was applied to unmilled coarse-grained (CG) Cu powders with low initial dislocation density and cryomilled nanocrystalline (nc) Cu powders with high initial dislocation density, with identical processing parameters. HPT of unmilled CG Cu powders resulted in exceptional grain refinement and increase in dislocation density, whereas significant grain growth and decrease in dislocation density occurred during HPT of cryomilled nc Cu powders. Equilibrium structures were achieved under both conditions, with very similar stable grain sizes and dislocation densities, suggesting dynamic balances between deformation-induced grain refinement and grain growth, and between deformation-induced dislocation accumulation and dislocation annihilation. The equilibrium structures are governed by these two dynamic balances.  相似文献

An inexpensive device to digitize existing pictorial material in conjunction with a digital computer is described. Slides (35-mm) are used as source material, and the slide is scanned to produce a two-level output (i.e., dot present or dot absent). The system has spatial resolution of approximately 1 mm and a complete scan (30 times 19 points) is completed in about 20 sec. Although we are using the system to produce only two level outputs, there is no reason a gray scale could not be constructed.  相似文献

Hering’s Opponent-Colors Theory has been central to understanding color appearance for 150 years. It aims to explain the phenomenology of colors with two linked propositions. First, a psychological hypothesis stipulates that any color is described necessarily and sufficiently by the extent to which it appears reddish-versus-greenish, bluish-versus-yellowish, and blackish-versus-whitish. Second, a physiological hypothesis stipulates that these perceptual mechanisms are encoded by three innate brain mechanisms. We review the evidence and conclude that neither side of the linking proposition is accurate: the theory is wrong. We sketch out an alternative, Utility-Based Coding, by which the known retinal cone-opponent mechanisms represent optimal encoding of spectral information given competing selective pressure to extract high-acuity spatial information; and phenomenological color categories represent an adaptive, efficient, output of the brain governed by behavioral demands.  相似文献

Lightness, the perceived gray shade of a surface, and the perception of self-luminous surfaces--that is, surfaces that appear to glow--have most often been studied with paper displays and computer-generated stimuli presented on CRT monitors. Although both methods are often effective, experiments that require a wide range of luminance values in the same display are often difficult to conduct with paper and computer displays alone. Also, color mode appearance is often an issue when surface color perception is the topic of research; CRT monitors are essentially light sources themselves and often appear in the luminous mode of color appearance. Here, we describe an apparatus in which the target is an undetected aperture whose luminance is adjustable. Whereas a typical CRT monitor offers a luminance range of about 100:1, much broader luminance ranges are possible with the described apparatus. Unlike a CRT monitor, the stimulus background will always appear in the surface mode of color perception, and the target(s) can appear as either surface colors or luminous colors. Apparatus modifications are possible, including the addition of a stereoscope or an embedded CRT for creating an adjustable region that is computer controlled.  相似文献

Strain-induced grain evolution in a 304 type austenitic stainless steel has been studied in multiple compression with the loading direction being changed in each pass. The tests were carried out to total strains above 6 at 873 K (0.5 T m) at a strain rate of about 10-3 s-1. Multiple deformation promotes the rapid formation of many mutually crossing subboundaries because various slip systems operate from pass to pass. The gradual rise in misorientations across dislocation subboundaries with increasing strain finally leads to the evolution of very fine grains with large-angle boundaries. It is concluded that a new grained structure can result from a kind of continuous reaction during deformation, namely continuous dynamic recrystallization. Such deformation-induced grains are characterized by relatively low densities of dislocations, and considerable lattice curvatures developed in their interiors. The latter observations suggest that high elastic distortions are developed in the grain interiors and so such strain-induced grain structures are in a non-equilibrium state.  相似文献

A fine-grained Cu–30%Zn alloy sheet was rolled at 77 K to induce ultrafine mechanical twins. Subsequent annealing of the rolled alloy at temperatures up to 543 K led to the uniform appearance of recrystallized ultrafine grains (UFGs), which contained numerous annealing twins. Average grain sizes of 150 ~ 300 nm were produced in this way. The formation of such UFGs during annealing is attributed to the high nucleus density associated with the fine initial grain size as well as to the high densities of mechanical twins and dislocations produced by cryorolling. The high driving force for recrystallization enabled the use of relatively low annealing temperatures, which limited the subsequent grain growth.  相似文献
