Some mathematical notes on three-mode factor analysis   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
The model for three-mode factor analysis is discussed in terms of newer applications of mathematical processes including a type of matrix process termed the Kronecker product and the definition of combination variables. Three methods of analysis to a type of extension of principal components analysis are discussed. Methods II and III are applicable to analysis of data collected for a large sample of individuals. An extension of the model is described in which allowance is made for unique variance for each combination variable when the data are collected for a large sample of individuals.  相似文献

Relations between multidimensional scaling and three-mode factor analysis   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A combination is achieved of two lines of psychometric interest: a) multidimensional scaling and b) factor analysis. This is accomplished with the use of three-mode factor analysis of scalar product matrices, one for each subject. Two of the modes are the groups of objects scaled and the third mode is the sample of subjects. Results are an object space, a person space, and a system for changing weights given to dimensions and of angles between dimensions in the object space for individuals located at different places in the person space. The development is illustrated with data from an adjective similarity study.Supported in part by the Personnel and Training Branch of the Office of Naval Research under Contract Number 00014-67-A-0305-0003. Statistical aspects of a three-mode factor analysis model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A special case of Bloxom's version of Tucker's three-mode model is developed statistically. A distinction is made between modes in terms of whether they are fixed or random. Parameter matrices are associated with the fixed modes, while no parameters are associated with the mode representing random observation vectors. The identification problem is discussed, and unknown parameters of the model are estimated by a weighted least squares method based upon a Gauss-Newton algorithm. A goodness-of-fit statistic is presented. An example based upon self-report and peer-report measures of personality shows that the model is applicable to real data. The model represents a generalization of Thurstonian factor analysis; weighted least squares estimators and maximum likelihood estimators of the factor model can be obtained using the proposed theory. This investigation was supported in part by a Research Scientist Development Award (K02-DA00017) and a research grant (DA01070) from the U. Measurement invariance, factor analysis and factorial invariance   总被引:31,自引:0,他引:31
Several concepts are introduced and defined: measurement invariance, structural bias, weak measurement invariance, strong factorial invariance, and strict factorial invariance. It is shown that factorial invariance has implications for (weak) measurement invariance. Definitions of fairness in employment/admissions testing and salary equity are provided and it is argued that strict factorial invariance is required for fairness/equity to exist. Implications for item and test bias are developed and it is argued that item or test bias probably depends on the existence of latent variables that are irrelevant to the primary goal of test constructers.Presidential address delivered at the Annual Meeting of the Psychometric Society in Berkeley, California, June 18–20, 1993.  相似文献

This paper presents a procedure to test factorial invariance in multilevel confirmatory factor analysis. When the group membership is at level 2, multilevel factorial invariance can be tested by a simple extension of the standard procedure. However level‐1 group membership raises problems which cannot be appropriately handled by the standard procedure, because the dependency between members of different level‐1 groups is not appropriately taken into account. The procedure presented in this article provides a solution to this problem. This paper also shows Muthén's maximum likelihood (MUML) estimation for testing multilevel factorial invariance across level‐1 groups as a viable alternative to maximum likelihood estimation. Testing multilevel factorial invariance across level‐2 groups and testing multilevel factorial invariance across level‐1 groups are illustrated using empirical examples. SAS macro and Mplus syntax are provided.  相似文献

The method of deriving the second derivatives of the goodness-of-fit functions of maximum likelihood and least-squares confirmatory factor analysis is discussed. The full set of second derivatives is reported. This research was supported by a PHS research grant No. M-10006 from the National Institutes of Mental Health, Public Health Service.  相似文献

A modification of the Gram-Schmidt process yields an easily constructed orthogonal transformation matrix which may be used to rotate a centroid, principal axis, or maximum likelihood factor matrix in a manner such that one of the new axes has predetermined direction. The procedure is illustrated by rotating a centroid factor matrix into an abbreviated bifactor matrix, the general factor being defined as the centroid of a specified subgroup of reasoning tests.  相似文献

Conditions for removing the indeterminancy due to rotation are given for both the oblique and orthogonal factor analysis models. The conditions indicate why published counterexamples to conditions discussed by Jöreskog are not identifiable. The author would like to thank Gordon Bechtel and the reviewers for their comments and suggestions.  相似文献

The resolution of a set of variables into principal components may be performed upon variables having arbitrary variances, or upon variables obtained from these by reduction of all variances to unity. The two procedures do not yield the same results even if the principal components are reduced to unit variance in both cases, except when the original variances are all equal. This article was written while the author was on a W.P.A. project at Teacher's College, Columbia University.  相似文献

Evidence is given to indicate that Lawley's formulas for the standard errors of maximum likelihood loading estimates do not produce exact asymptotic results. A small modification is derived which appears to eliminate this difficulty. The authors are indebted to Walter Kristof and Thomas Stroud for their helpful reviews of an earlier version of this paper and particularly to D. N. Lawley for his review, comments, and encouragement.  相似文献

New procedures are presented for measuring invariance and matching factors for fixed variables and for fixed or different subjects. Two of these, the coefficient of invariance for factor loadings and the coefficient of factor similarity, utilize factor scores computed from the different sets of factor loadings and one of the original standard score matrices. Another, the coefficient of subject invariance, is obtained by using one of the sets of factor loadings in conjunction with the different standard score matrices. These coefficients are correlations between factor scores of the appropriate matrices. When the best match of factors is desired, rather than degree of resemblance, the method of assignment is proposed.  相似文献

Summary Subjects used arm movements to move a dot on a visual display into a predefined target area. Measures of the peak velocity values and the timing of the peaks were taken for the initial (preplanned) and the immediately subsequent (corrective) phases of movement. In both phases the value of the maximum velocity depended on task parameters such as amplitude. However, the time of the peak of each phase relative to its onset was invariant. Some implications of these observations for the nature of motor programs are discussed.  相似文献
