The current study expands upon the extant literature by examining the influence of contextual risk factors (e.g., parental psychological distress, household income, educational attainment) on parental responses to children’s emotional experiences. Participants included 97 ethnically and demographically diverse mother–child dyads with children ranging in age from 7 to 12. Mothers reported indicators of supportive and unsupportive emotion socialization practices, and measures of child emotion regulation and emotion dysregulation. Higher scores on the familial risk index were positively related to increased emotion dysregulation and negatively related to decreased emotion regulation through mediated effects of mothers’ unsupportive reactions to children’s negative emotional expressions. These findings suggest the importance of considering contextual influences on the emotion socialization process and offer potential avenues to foster adaptive emotional development in the context of high risk. 相似文献

Mothers’ emotion socialization practices are very important for children’s later outcomes; however, we know very little about how these practices may lead to different outcomes for European American (EA) and African American (AA) children. In the current study, maternal emotion socialization practices were investigated in relation to child emotion-related outcomes in 122 pairs of mothers and preschool-age children, and differences in associations were examined for EA and AA families. Mothers were assessed for their expressions of positive emotion with their child and their responses to their child’s negative emotions, including support of sadness/fear and magnification of anger, when children were 3. Children were assessed for their expression of positive emotion with their mother and their internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors when they were 4. When ethnicity was included as a moderator, results revealed that when AA mothers expressed more positive emotion, their children were also more positive 1 year later. Additionally, as AA mothers provided greater support for their children’s sadness/fear, these children tended to have fewer later internalizing problems. Finally, when AA mothers responded with more magnification of their children’s anger, these children tended to have greater internalizing and externalizing problems 1 year later. These associations were not found for EA families. Results highlighted differential effects based on the type of support provided by mothers and the role that mothers played in encouraging or suppressing their child’s expressions. The overall findings highlight the need to consider maternal emotion socialization from a culturally-informed perspective. 相似文献

Previous research provides an inadequate account of parental emotion socialization and its relation to child functioning among ethnic minority groups in the United States. This study compared reports of Asian Indian immigrant and White American mothers’ emotion socialization and examined relations between mothers’ emotion socialization and child outcomes in these two groups. Indian immigrant (n = 34) and White American (n = 38) mothers completed measures of child behavior problems and social competence, as well as self-report measures of two types of emotion socialization, responses to children’s negative emotions and emotion expressivity. Children completed a self-report measure of social competence. Results revealed that Indian immigrant mothers were more likely than White American mothers to report responding nonsupportively to their children’s negative emotions. However, reports of mothers’ nonsupportive responses were not related to child outcomes in the Indian immigrant group. In the White American group, reports of mothers’ nonsupportive responses were positively related to child behavior problems. Mothers’ self-reported negative emotion expressivity was positively related to child behavior problems and negatively related to mother-rated child social competence for Indian immigrants, while no significant relation was found between mothers’ negative emotion expressivity and child outcomes for White Americans. Moderation analyses were performed with these variables but were nonsignificant. Results are discussed in the context of cultural influences on emotion socialization and subsequent impact on child functioning. 相似文献

In this review, we examine the role of emotion regulation in the treatment of children with anxiety disorders. Cognitive-behavioral
therapy (CBT) has been shown to “work” for children with anxiety disorders and it has been categorized as an evidence-based
treatment. However, most studies have shown that the treatment is effective for about 60–70% of children, leaving the remaining
children symptomatic and oftentimes with persisting psychological disorders. Of importance, it has also been shown that many
children with anxiety disorders demonstrate poor emotion regulation skills. Despite these findings, little attention has been
directed toward incorporating emotion regulation strategies into these relatively effective cognitive-behavioral treatments.
It is possible that CBT programs do not work as well for a portion of children because their emotion regulation deficits,
if present, are not being targeted sufficiently. In this review, it is suggested that adding an emotion regulation component
could increase treatment efficacy. In addition, strategies aimed at improving emotion regulation at the individual level and
at the family level are introduced. Details of how improved emotion regulation skills could be beneficial in bringing about
change are discussed. Finally, issues of measurement and the clinical implications for research and practice are considered. 相似文献

This longitudinal study examined processes that mediate the association between maternal depressive symptoms and peer social
preference during the early school years. Three hundred and fifty six kindergarten children (182 boys) and their mothers participated
in the study. During kindergarten, mothers reported their level of depressive symptomatology. In first grade, teachers rated
children’s emotion regulation at school and observers rated the affective quality of mother-child interactions. During second
grade, children’s social preference was assessed by peer nomination. Results indicated that mothers’ level of depressive symptomatology
negatively predicted their child’s social preference 2 years later, controlling for the family SES and teacher-rated social
preference during kindergarten. Among European American families, the association between maternal depressive symptoms and
social preference was partially mediated by maternal warmth and the child’s emotion regulation. Although the relation between
maternal depressive symptoms and children peer preference was stronger among African American families than Europrean American
families, its mediation by the maternal warmth and child’s emotion regulation was not found in African American families.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is thought to involve emotional hyper-reactivity and emotion dysregulation. However, the precise
nature of the emotion dysregulation in SAD has not been well characterized. In the present study, the Emotion Regulation Interview
(ERI) was developed to quantify the frequency and self-efficacy of five emotion regulation strategies specified by Gross’s
(Review of General Psychology 2: 271–299, 1998) process model of emotion regulation. Forty-eight individuals with SAD and 33 healthy controls (HCs) were interviewed about
responses during (a) a laboratory speech task and (b) two recent social anxiety-evoking situations. Individuals with SAD reported
greater use of avoidance and expressive suppression than HCs, as well as lesser self-efficacy in implementing cognitive reappraisal
and expressive suppression. These regulation deficits were not accounted for by differences in emotional reactivity. These
findings highlight specific emotion regulation deficits in SAD, and support the idea that the Emotion Regulation Interview
may be usefully applied to other clinical disorders. 相似文献

Child and Adolescent Emotion Regulation: The Role of Parental Emotion Regulation and Expression 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper reviews current literature relating to parent and child emotional functioning, specifically their emotion regulatory
skills and emotional expression. Included are considerations regarding theoretical, methodological, and sampling strengths
and weaknesses of existing literature. On the basis of the review, several directions for future research are proposed. First,
it is argued that consistency in the measurement of emotion regulation is necessary, including assessment of more refined
theoretical conceptualizations of regulatory types, skills, or strategies. Second, it is argued that emotion regulation developmental
research examining the post-early childhood period is necessary in order to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding
of youths’ emotion regulation. Finally, it is argued that greater examination of paternal influences on child emotional functioning,
in addition to maternal influences, is required. Consideration of these issues in future emotion regulation research will
ideally contribute to a greater understanding of the mechanisms involved in child and adolescent development of optimal regulatory
capacities. 相似文献

Compared emotion socialization in 26 children with anxiety disorders ages 8–12 years and their mothers to 26 nonclinical counterparts without psychopathology. Children and their mothers participated in an emotion interaction task in which they discussed occasions when the child felt worry, sadness, and anger. Responses were coded for length of discussion, proportion of words spoken by child vs. mother, frequency of positive and negative emotion words, explanatory discussion of emotion, and maternal facilitation of emotion discussion. Children and their mothers also completed the Expressiveness and Control scales of the Family Environment Scale. Results indicated that mothers of children with an anxiety disorder spoke less frequently than their child, used significantly fewer positive emotion words, and discouraged their childrens emotion discussions more than did mothers of nonclinical children. Nonclinical children and their mothers indicated significantly more emotional expressiveness in their families than did children with an anxiety disorder and their mothers. These results highlight the potential role of truncated family emotional expressivity in the emotional development and functioning of children with an anxiety disorder. 相似文献

Despite the success of cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) for emotional disorders, a sizable subgroup of patients with complex clinical presentations, such as patients with generalized anxiety disorder, fails to evidence adequate treatment response. Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) integrates facets of traditional and contemporary CBTs, mindfulness, and emotion-focused interventions within a framework that reflects basic and translational findings in affect science. Specifically, ERT is a mechanism-targeted intervention focusing on patterns of motivational dysfunction while cultivating emotion regulation skills. Open and randomized controlled psychotherapy trials have demonstrated considerable preliminary evidence for the utility of this approach as well as for the underlying proposed mechanisms. This article provides an illustration of ERT through the case of “William.” In particular, this article includes a case-conceptualization of William from an ERT perspective while describing the flow and progression of the ERT treatment approach. 相似文献

A sample of 75 primiparas in Athens, Greece were interviewed 3 days following birth (T1) regarding their attitudes towards maternal grandmother participation in child care. A follow-up questionnaire measuring the same attitudes and maternal separation anxiety (MSA) was answered 3–8 months later (T2). It was found that maternal grandmothers were going to assist in child care in 68% of the cases. Higher scores on the MSA subscale ‘employment-related separation concerns’ were obtained by all mothers who were not assisted in child care by the maternal grandmother and were highest among those mothers intending to work before the child was 1 year old. Mothers who intended to work as well as those who had a higher educational level had significantly lower scores on the MSA subscale ‘maternal separation anxiety’. Overall, mothers expressed favourable attitudes towards maternal grandmother participation at T1 and T2. Positive attitudes were especially observed among mothers who relied on grandmothers for child care. 相似文献

This study investigated two primary research aims surrounding health anxiety: (a) to examine what differences exist in emotion regulation strategies of health anxious and non-health anxious populations and (b) to investigate what emotion regulation strategies predict health anxiety, before and after controlling for trait cognitive and somatic anxiety. A total of 95 participants of the general population completed a series of online questionnaires. A single factor between groups MANOVA revealed that a health anxious group scored significantly higher in several emotion regulation strategies: distraction, external attribution, emotion expression and acting out; anxiety-related variables: trait cognitive and somatic anxiety; and beliefs about the negative consequences of becoming ill. Hierarchical regressions showed that several emotion regulation strategies were significantly associated with higher levels of health anxiety, before: distraction, external attribution, capitalising, positive reappraisal and emotional expression; and after: external attribution and capitalising, the control of trait anxiety. Overall, the results demonstrated that (a) emotional intelligence and behavioural attempts to understand emotional experiences may be associated with specific health anxiety symptomology, while a lack of effective cognitive strategies and worry may be responsible for the associated trait anxiety dimensions. 相似文献
