Trunk flexion is an understudied biomechanical variable that potentially influences running performance and susceptibility to injury. We present and test a theoretical model relating trunk flexion angle to stride parameters, joint moments and ground reaction forces that have been implicated in repetitive stress injuries. Twenty-three participants (12 male, 11 female) ran at preferred trunk flexion and three more flexed trunk positions (moderate, intermediate and high) on a custom built Bertec™ instrumented treadmill while kinematic and kinetic data were simultaneously captured. Markers adhered to bony landmarks tracked the movement of the trunk and lower limb. Stride parameters, moments of force and ground reaction force were calculated using Visual 3D (C-Motion ©) software. From preferred to high trunk flexion, stride length decreased 6% (P < 0.001) and stride frequency increased 7% (P < 0.001). Extensor moments at the hip increased 70% (P < 0.001), but knee extensor (P < 0.001) and ankle plantarflexor moments (P < 0.001) decreased 22% and 14%, respectively. Greater trunk flexion increased rate of loading by 29% (P < 0.01) and vertical ground reaction force impact transients by 20% (P < 0.01). Trunk flexion angle during running has significant effects on stride kinematics, lower extremity joint moments and ground reaction force and should be further investigated in relation to running performance and repetitive stress injuries.  相似文献

In experiments that involve contact with adhesion between two surfaces, as found in atomic force microscopy or nanoindentation, two distinct contact force (P) versus indentation-depth (h) curves are often measured depending on whether the indenter moves towards or away from the sample. The origin of this hysteresis is not well understood and is often attributed to moisture, plasticity or viscoelasticity. Here we report experiments which show that hysteresis can exist in the absence of these effects, and that its magnitude depends on surface roughness. We develop a theoretical model in which the hysteresis appears as the result of a series of surface instabilities, in which the contact area grows or recedes by a finite amount. The model can be used to estimate material properties from contact experiments even when the measured Ph curves are not unique.  相似文献

Summary The article attempts to give an answer to the question: why for the acceptance of a statementz 2 implied by another,z 1, it is required not only thatz 1 be true but also justified? The application in a given case of the rule allowing to accept a statement implied by another true one is not possible without establishing in an appropriate manner that the statement is true. Practically, therefore, we have to rely in the conditions for the acceptance of a statementz 2 implied by anotherz 1 on the manner of acceptance ofz 1. If we require that this manner of acceptance should guarantee the truth ofz 1, no special requirement of the truth ofz 1 is necessary. If the acceptance ofz 2 implied byz 1 depends onz 1 being accepted in a manner which does not ensure the truth ofz 1 (e. g. by induction), then we have to give up the requirement of the truth ofz 1. At most, we may prohibit the acceptance ofz 2 implied byz 1, inductively justified, if the evidence for the negation ofz 1 is better than the inductive one forz 1.  相似文献

Slow EEG potentials (Fz, Cz, Pz) and heart rate were recorded during the foreperiod of a reaction task, which involved different levels of discrimination difficulty. A simple reaction task was compared with a selective reaction task where either an easy or a difficult discrimination was required. In general, the terminal amplitude of the CNV was not affected by task difficulty. However, a prolonged negative wave was found when the difficulty of the task was not known to the subject in advance but was indicated by S1. Moreover, the heart-rate deceleration around S2 was more pronounced the more difficult the discrimination required at S2.  相似文献

We measured ground reaction force and lower extremity shortening in ten healthy, young adults in order to compare five trials of drop jumps to drop landings. Our dependent variable was the percentage of displacement (shortening) between the markers on the ASIS and second metatarsal heads on each LE, relative to the maximum shortening (100% displacement) for that trial at the point of greatest ground reaction force. We defined this as “percent displacement at maximum force” (%dFmax). The sample mean %dFmax was 0.73% ± 0.14% for the drop jumps, and 0.47% ± 0.09% for the drop landings. The mean within-subject difference score was 0.26% ± 0.20%. Two-tailed paired t test comparing %dFmax between the drop jump and drop landing yielded P = 0.002. For all participants in this study, the %dFmax was greater in drop jumps than in drop landings. This indicates that in drop jumps, the point of maximum force and of maximum shortening was nearly simultaneous, compared to drop landings, where the point of maximum shortening followed that of maximum force by a greater proportion. This difference in force to displacement behavior is explained by linear spring behavior in drop jumps, and linear damping behavior in drop landings.  相似文献

This study is a direct replication of gaze-liking effect using the same design, stimuli and procedure. The gaze-liking effect describes the tendency for people to rate objects as more likeable when they have recently seen a person repeatedly gaze toward rather than away from the object. However, as subsequent studies show considerable variability in the size of this effect, we sampled a larger number of participants (N?=?98) than the original study (N?=?24) to gain a more precise estimate of the gaze-liking effect size. Our results indicate a much smaller standardised effect size (dz?=?0.02) than that of the original study (dz?=?0.94). Our smaller effect size was not due to general insensitivity to eye-gaze effects because the same sample showed a clear (dz?=?1.09) gaze-cuing effect – faster reaction times when eyes looked toward vs away from target objects. We discuss the implications of our findings for future studies wishing to study the gaze-liking effect.  相似文献

In this paper, two experiments are reported investigating the nature of the cognitive representations underlying causal conditional reasoning performance. The predictions of causal and logical interpretations of the conditional diverge sharply when inferences involving pairs of conditionals—such as if P1then Q and if P2then Q—are considered. From a causal perspective, the causal direction of these conditionals is critical: are the Picauses of Q; or symptoms caused byQ. The rich variety of inference patterns can naturally be modelled by Bayesian networks. A pair of causal conditionals where Q is an effect corresponds to a “collider” structure where the two causes (Pi) converge on a common effect. In contrast, a pair of causal conditionals where Q is a cause corresponds to a network where two effects (Pi) diverge from a common cause. Very different predictions are made by fully explicit or initial mental models interpretations. These predictions were tested in two experiments, each of which yielded data most consistent with causal model theory, rather than with mental models.  相似文献

Weil’s essay on Homer’s Iliad contains a philosophical analysis of la force that divides it into two phenomena with one metaphysical ground. Her analysis is a corrective to misunderstandings of force as something that can be possessed. The first half of my elaboration of Weil’s analysis is devoted to the phenomena she identifies in relation to la force, which I call might. In the second half, I elaborate the varieties of misunderstanding of la force. First, might is an illusion sustained by the shared belief of those in submission to might. Second, forces, i.e. the material forces on which weaponry depends, cannot be possessed. Third, what lies behind material forces is necessity, a third meaning of la force, which functions as a superordinate or ultimate force to which everyone and everything is subject. Understanding the last of these is the corrective that Weil means to present.  相似文献

The house mouse (Mus musculus) and the mound‐building mouse (M. spicilegus) differ in their mating and social systems. The M. musculus is polygynous and females tend to breed cooperatively while M. spicilegus is known to be monogamous and famous for its unique cooperative behavior; the communal overwintering. Mus spicilegus is considered as a highly aggressive species in the genus Mus. In the present study, we attempted to analyze the development of aggressive and sociable behavior in these species and to discover how familiarity with the target moderates the development of sociable and aggressive behaviors and moderates the differences between the species. Dyadic social interaction tests in neutral cages were performed on 21‐, 60‐, and 120‐day‐old mice of both genders and both species. Each individual was tested against a sibling and an unfamiliar individual at all three ages. Our results showed that the development of aggressive and sociable behavior with age differed between the species and sexes; however, familiarity with the other mouse moderated the effect of species on aggression. At 21 days, both genders of M. spicilegus were more aggressive against strangers than siblings. This became true of both species at 60 days. When facing a stranger, both sexes of M. spicilegus were more aggressive than M. musculus at 120 days. However, when facing a sibling, neither gender of M. spicilegus was more agonistic than M. musculus, indicating that either kinship or early social experiences elicit tolerance. Aggr. A meta-analysis of 76 studies (N = 31,016) examined the relationship between social identification and depression. Overall, individuals who identify highly with a group tend to report less depression (average rz = −.15). However, a large amount of variability between studies was observed. The 95% prediction interval, which indicates the true effect size that can be expected in future research, ranged from rz = −.50 to .19. The relationship between depression and social identification is more complex than previously assumed. Some variability is related to the social identification measure used. Studies that focused on identification with interactive groups (rz = −.28) had larger effect sizes than studies that focused on social categories (rz = −.11). Moreover, studies of non-stigmatized groups (rz = −.24) had larger effect sizes than studies of stigmatized groups (rz = −.10). In conclusion, the structure and social identity content of groups appear to play an important role in the relationship between depression and social identification.  相似文献

Through pressure measurement and underwater motion capture analysis, this study aimed to elucidate the effects of hand paddles on hand propulsive forces, mechanical power, and Froude efficiency in arm-stroke-only front-crawl swimming at various velocities. Eight male swimmers swam under two conditions in randomized order, once using only their hands and once aided by hand paddles on both hands. Each participant swam 10 times a distance of 16 m in each condition, for a total of 20 trials. To elucidate the relationship between propulsive forces and swimming velocity, each participant was instructed to swim each of the two sets of 10 trials at an arbitrarily different swimming velocity. During the trials, pressure sensors and underwater motion capture cameras were used together to analyze the pressure forces acting on the hand and hand kinematics, respectively. Six pressure sensors were attached to the right hand, and pressure forces acting on the right hand were estimated by multiplying the areas with the pressure differences between the palm and dorsal side of the hand. Acting directions of pressure forces were analyzed using a normal vector perpendicular to the hand or hand paddle, calculated from coordinates obtained using underwater motion capture analysis. As a result, there were no differences in propulsive forces and mechanical power to overcome water resistance (PD) with or without hand paddles at the same swimming velocities. However, the use of hand paddles decreased stroke rate and hand velocities, so mechanical power to push the water at the hand (PK) decreased. Using hand paddles thus increased Froude efficiency (ηF). These results suggest that training load decreases when swimmers swim at the same velocities while using hand paddles. This insight could prove useful for coaches and swimmers when using hand paddles for training to help ensure that they are used in accordance with their intended training purpose. If swimmers use hand paddles increasing propulsive force or PK, they should swim at a higher swimming velocity with hand paddles than without.  相似文献

Hick’s law, one of the few law-like relationships involving human performance, expresses choice reaction time as a linear function of the mutual information between the stimulus and response events. However, since this law was first proposed in 1952, its validity has been challenged by the fact that it only holds for the overall reaction time (RT) across all the stimuli, and does not hold for the reaction time (RTi) for each individual stimulus. This paper introduces a new formulation in which RTi is a linear function of (1) the mutual information between the event that stimulus i occurs and the set of all potential response events and (2) the overall mutual information for all stimuli and responses. Then Hick’s law for RT follows as the weighted mean of each side of the RTi equation using the stimulus probabilities as the weights. The new RTi equation incorporates the important speed–accuracy trade-off characteristic. When the performance is error-free, RTi becomes a linear function of two entropies as measures of stimulus uncertainty or unexpectancy. Reanalysis of empirical data from a variety of sources provide support for the new law-like relationship.  相似文献

The complete high-order perturbation formulae of spin-Hamiltonian (SH) parameters (g factors gi and hyperfine structure constants Ai , where i = x, y, z) containing contributions from both the crystal-field (CF) and charge-transfer (CT) mechanisms (the latter mechanism is neglected in the widely-used CF theory) are established for d1 ions in rhombic tetrahedra. From these formulae, the SH parameters of Cr5+ ion at the rhombically-distorted tetrahedral P5+ site of Ca2PO4Cl crystal are calculated. The CF and CT energy levels used in the calculation are obtained from the optical spectra of the studied Ca2PO4Cl : Cr5+ crystal. The calculated results showed reasonable agreement with the experimental values. The signs of the hyperfine structure constants Ai and the relative importance of the CT mechanism to SH parameters are acquired from the calculations.  相似文献

Center of mass displacement during gait has frequently been used as an indicator of gait efficiency or as a complement to standard gait analysis. With technological advances, measuring the center of mass as the centroid of a multi-segment system is practical and feasible, but must first be compared to the well-established Newtonian computation of double-integrating the ground reaction force. This study aims to verify that the kinematic centroid obtained from a commonly-used model (Vicon Peak Plug-In-Gait) provides at least as reliable measurements of center of mass displacement as those obtained from the ground reaction forces. Gait data was collected for able-bodied children and children with myelomeningocele who use larger lateral center of mass excursions during gait. Reasonable agreement between methods was found in fore-aft and vertical directions, where the methods' excursions differed by an average of less than 10 mm in either direction, and the average RMS differences between methods' computed curves were 6 and 13 mm. Particularly good agreement was observed in the lateral direction, where the calculated excursions differed by an average of less than 2 mm and the RMS difference was 5 mm. Error analyses in computing the center of mass displacement from ground reaction forces were performed. A 5% deviation in mass estimation increased the computed vertical excursion twofold, and a 5% deviation in the integration constant of initial velocity increased the computed fore-aft excursions by 10%. The suitability of calculating center of mass displacement using ground reaction forces in a patient population is questioned. The kinematic centroid is susceptible to errors in segment parameters and marker placement, but results in plausible results that are at least within the range of doubt of the better-established ground reaction force integration, and are more useful when interpreting 3-D gait data.  相似文献

The paper deals with certain problems connected with the assumption that choice probabilities ps(x, y) depend on the subject s. A set of postulates is given, which implies the existence of sequences of “classification standards”, i.e., sequences {zj} such that whenever we have 0 < ps0(x, zi) < 1 for some s0 and i, then ps(zi+k, x) = ps(x, zi?k) = 1 for all s, and k ≥ 1. Elements of any such sequence {zj} can serve as boundaries between successive categories of classification based on the following rule: Assign x to jth category if you feel it is “to the right” of zj and “to the left” of zj+1. Under the condition stated above this rule is unambiguous, and the resulting classification has the property that every element is assigned to one of the two neighboring categories, regardless who performs the classification.Next, the postulates are enriched so as to imply the existence of “tightest” among such sequences {zj}, hence leading to a classification with largest number of categories.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to verify whether the expectation of perturbations while performing side-step cutting manoeuvres influences lower limb EMG activity, heel kinematics and ground reaction forces. Eighteen healthy men performed two sets of 90° side-step cutting manoeuvres. In the first set, 10 unperturbed trials (Base) were performed while stepping over a moveable force platform. In the second set, subjects were informed about the random possibility of perturbations to balance throughout 32 trials, of which eight were perturbed (Pert, 10 cm translation triggered at initial contact), and the others were “catch” trials (Catch). Center of mass velocity (CoMVEL), heel acceleration (HAC), ground reaction forces (GRF) and surface electromyography (EMG) from lower limb and trunk muscles were recorded for each trial. Surface EMG was analyzed prior to initial contact (PRE), during load acceptance (LA) and propulsion (PRP) periods of the stance phase. In addition, hamstrings-quadriceps co-contraction ratios (CCR) were calculated for these time-windows. The results showed no changes in CoMVEL, HAC, peak GRF and surface EMG PRE among conditions. However, during LA, there were increases in tibialis anterior EMG (30–50%) concomitant to reduced EMG for quadriceps muscles, gluteus and rectus abdominis for Catch and Pert conditions (15–40%). In addition, quadriceps EMG was still reduced during PRP (p < .05). Consequently, CCR was greater for Catch and Pert in comparison to Base (p < .05). These results suggest that there is modulation of muscle activity towards anticipating potential instability in the lower limb joints and assure safety to complete the task.  相似文献

A quantum mechanical ab initio simulation of XO2 molecules (X?=?O, S, Se, Te and Po) and the relevant dimers has been performed. The X–O bond polarity and the bent configuration of the XO2 species are discussed as factors governing their condensation mechanisms. Three points are emphasized: (i) the fundamental difference between the constitution of the condensed phases of OO2 and SO2, on the one hand, and those of SeO2 and TeO2, on the other; (ii) the occurrence of polymorphism in crystalline TeO2 and its absence in crystalline SeO2; (iii) the driving forces of the γ–α polymorph transformation in crystalline TeO2.  相似文献
