The papers collected in this volume were first presented at a workshop entitled Ethics of Forgiveness and Revenge, which was held May 22-23, 2014 at Union College in Schenectady, New York. The papers cover a range of topics, including the rightness and wrongness of vengeance and forgiveness, who has the standing to avenge or forgive, the relationship between retributive punishment and revenge, and the role apology plays in determining correct punishment. The papers in this volume are not only philosophically interesting, but are also relevant to our everyday lives, since how we respond to moral wrongs is just as important as how we conduct the rest of our moral lives. 相似文献

In this paper I compare two very different deployments of love in ethics. Swami Vivekananda's concept of ethical love ties
into the project of constructing an alternative masculinity for a colonized people; while feminist care ethics uses love to
escape the perceived masculinity of traditional ethical theory. Using Kenneth Goodpaster's distinction between ‘framework
questions’ and ‘application questions,’ I try to show that love in Practical Vedanta addresses the former while feminist care
ethics concerns itself with the latter. Even though this difference, I suggest, could be a function of their varying historical-political
contexts, the two issues need to be taken together for a more complete understanding of the ethical subject. 相似文献

The Varieties of Forgiveness Experience: Working toward a Comprehensive Definition of Forgiveness 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The definition of forgiveness was explored in a group of 270 young adults, and the underlying dimensions of their definitions
compared with those of philosophers, theologians and psychological researchers. Three dimensions were identified: orientation
(self, other), direction (passive letting go of negative experiences, active enhancement of positive experiences) and form
(emotion, cognition and behavior). Definitions employing a passive letting go of negative experiences were associated with
more state forgiveness. Gender differences were found in state forgiveness and in the employment of passive vs. active dimensions
of forgiveness.
Dr. Kathleen A. Lawler-Row is Professor of Psychology at East Carolina University. Her work focuses on the physiological and
health correlates of forgiveness. Correspondence to Dr. K. A. Lawler-Row, e-mail: rowk@ecu.edu.
Cynthia Scott and Meirav Edlis-Matityahou are graduate students in the Experimental and Counseling (respectively) programs
at the University of Tennessee.
Rachel Raines and Erin Moore are undergraduate students working with Dr. Lawler-Row in the department of psychology. 相似文献

Paul Ricoeur's understanding of the relations of faith, love, and hope suggests a unique approach to theological ethics, one that holds fresh promise for bringing together considerations of the good (teleology) and the right (deontology) around the notion of an economy of the gift. The economy of the gift articulates Ricoeur's distinctively dialectical understanding of the relation of the human and the divine, and the resulting dialectical moral relation of the self and the other. Despite our fallen condition, Ricoeur suggests, we are called by the divine to embrace the radical possibility of the reconciliation of human goods under the requirement of accountability to human diversity and otherness. 相似文献

Evincing his not uncritical allegiance to pragmatic philosophy, Isreal Scheffler's notion of ethics and its role in education is one which attempts to dissolve inherited distinctions in the field. For Scheffler's ethics, aimed always at justifiable conduct, is conduct guided by rationality, powered by emotion, responsive the needs of it agents community, learned through moral education, practiced habitually, and ultimately justified by individual commitment to action. Scheffler's primary desideratum is to arrive at an ethics that is justifiable because it is reasonable and so can gain our commitment. 相似文献

Abstract The author investigated (a) the effects of a victim's perspective taking and a transgressor's apology on interpersonal forgiveness and (b) forgiveness as a mode of dissonance reduction. Before the participants read a scenario describing a situation in which they imagined being mistreated by a classmate, the author randomly assigned them to 1 of 4 perspective-taking conditions: (a) recalling times when they had mistreated or hurt others (i.e., the recall-self-as-transgressor condition); (b) imagining how they would think, feel, and behave if they were the classmate (i.e., the imagine-self condition); (c) imagining how the classmate would think, feel, and behave (i.e., the imagine-other condition); or (d) imagining the situation from their own (i.e., the victim's/control) perspective. After reading the scenario, the participants read an apology from the classmate. The participants in the recall-self-as-transgressor condition were significantly more likely than those in the control condition to (a) make benevolent attributions, (b) experience benevolent emotional reactions, and (c) forgive the transgressor. The relationship between the perspective-taking manipulation and forgiveness was mediated by the benevolent attributions and positive emotional reactions experienced by the victims. 相似文献
