Thirty-two four-year-old and 32 six-year-old children were presented a conjunctive concept that involved either two values from within a single dimension (unidimensional condition) or two values from different dimensions (bidimensional condition). As predicted, the results showed that the uni- vs bidimensional factor had no effect upon the performance of the younger children, while the older children solved more rapidly in the unidimensional than in the bidimensional condition. The results were interpreted to suggest that the younger children's responding is not under dimensional control and that a major source of difficulty for older children solving the conjunctive concept is the necessity of responding to two dimensions, not to two values.  相似文献

It was observed by chance that perceived movement of a stationary spot of light in a dark featureless field persists after its induced movement by a moving frame. When the frame was suddenly occluded, apparent movement of the spot persisted in the same direction as prior induced movement. The effect which is compelling and readily reported and referred to as induced subject-relative movement (ISRM) was confirmed and further investigated in four experiments. In the first, the informal observations of ISRM were confirmed using manual tracking to index perceived movement, and in the second, it was shown to occur only very slightly and briefly when the frame merely stopped. In the third experiment, ISRM was shown to occur following two different paths of induced movement, and in the fourth, not to occur following real movement of the spot, which was almost indistinguishable from its induced movement. It is suggested that the effect arises from the absence of a signal for cessation of perceived movement when the frame disappears.  相似文献

This study investigated the perception of the direction of peripheral apparent motion as a function of stimulus location in the peripheral visual field, stimulus contrast, and the direction of the apparent motion. This study tested the hypothesis that left-handed individuals are more aware than right-handed individuals of others' handedness. 18 left-handed and 18 right-handed college students were shown a drawing of 8 children at a party. Seven children held objects in the left hand, while one held an object in the right hand. After 2 1/2 min. the drawing was removed and subjects answered 15 questions about its contents. Included were 2 questions asking how many children were holding something in the right or left hand. Compared with right-handed subjects, left-handed subjects reported significantly more children holding something in the left hand and significantly fewer holding something in the right hand. Reaction time (RT) to the second of two stimuli presented in rapid succession was examined as a function of the intensity of the first stimulus (S1). It was found that the delay in RT2 was greater following a dim first stimulus than following a bright first stimulus. The magnitude of this increase corresponded to the difference in RTs to the two intensity levels of S1. These results support the prediction of a single channel model of response selection. Examination of mean first RTs revealed a general elevation in latency of RT. However, since this increase was not influenced by the inter-stimulus interval (ISI) or by the intensity of the second stimulus (S2), and since the same increase was found on “catch trials“ where no S2 was presented, this increase is considered to be a function of change in set in the double response situation.  相似文献

A modified version of the Ternus display was used to assess the relative effects of element position cues on reports of group and end-to-end movement. In this display, two rows of stimulus elements are joined by connecting lines. In one version of the display, the connecting lines remain stationary across frames, facilitating the interpretation that the associated stimulus elements also remain stationary. In another version of the display, one end of the connecting lines shifts horizontally from frame to fame, facilitating the interpretation that the associated stimulus elements have also shifted. The experiment showed that when the connecting lines remain stationary, reports of end-to-end movement increase, regardless of the interstimulus interval (ISI) at which the frames alternate. When the connecting lines shift, reports of group movement increase, regardless of ISI. Theoretical interpretations of the results involving both relatively low-level motion signals and higher order perceptual influences are considered.  相似文献

We compared the relative effectiveness of rotating or translating the head, either horizontally or vertically, on the perception of depth resulting from motion parallax. Using Rogers and Graham's (1979) paradigm, we yoked the movement of random dots on a screen to movements of the head, simulating a corrugated surface. In two experiments, subjects nulled the apparent depth or motion seen in the display. Horizontal head movements yielded the most precise depth judgements, irrespective of whether the head translated or rotated. Motion thresholds were higher than those for depth and were independent of direction of head movement. In a third experiment, suprathreshold stimuli that simulated differing amounts of depth were used, and the subjects' perception of depth was virtually the same for all types and directions of head movement. In our stimulus situation, rotating or translating the head either vertically or horizontally produced motion parallax cues for depth that were equally effective. Our results also showed that, within a range, retinal image motion from head movement is converted into a depth signal and that above that range location constancy breaks down and motion is seen.  相似文献

The effects of variations in stimulus duration and interstimulus onset interval on ratings of tactile apparent movement were determined for seven Ss with stimulators of very small diameter. Judgments of successiveness and simultaneity were also obtained. It was found that apparent movement increased as a power function of increases in stimulus duration. The function relating tactile apparent movement and stimulus duration was shown to be similar to that obtained by Kolers (1964) for visual apparent movement, lnterstimulus onset interval also had a marked effect on apparent movement, and the optimal interval was influenced by stimulus duration in a manner similar to that reported by Sherrick and Rogers (1966).  相似文献
