A number of investigators demonstrated that processing verbal stimuli by encoding them in reference to the self facilitates recall for these stimuli, compared with other kinds of semantic processing. On the basis of a critical discussion of the relevant research, it is hypothesized that the superiority of self-reference is due to some specific features of semantic orienting tasks that serve as control groups for self-referent encoding. This hypothesis is tested in three experiments demonstrating that, when changing certain features of these semantic orienting tasks, the self-reference-effect (SRE) is no longer obtained. In Experiment 3, the statistical difficulties are addressed that arise when not rejecting the null-hypothesis. Furthermore, several implications of schema-oriented explanations of the SRE are tested. Several dependent measures provide evidence in support of the motion that a self-schema is activated during encoding and retrieval of self-relevant material. However, results show that self-referent processing — in contrast to the most general claim of the relevant literature—does not lead to superior recollection.  相似文献

Torgesen (1977b) suggested that reading-disabled children exhibit passivity in learning situations; they fail to employ strategies that enhance learning. Such passivity resembles that of young children who lack awareness of the utility of strategies that enhance cognitive efficiency in a variety of situations (e.g., listening, reading, and memory tasks). Such awareness is one aspect of metamemory, and children with reading problems may lag behind other children with regard to this aspect. Good readers (second-, third-, and fifth-graders) and poor readers (third- and fifth-graders) were interviewed to determine their level of knowledge about a number of variables that affect memory in real-life situations. Each child was asked questions concerning his or her memory ability, and then was shown pictures depicting manipulations of the variables number, time, category, and strategy, as well as two-way combinations of the four variables. Results generally failed to support the developmental lag hypothesis. Poor readers did not resemble younger children in their awareness of variables that affect memory but exhibited knowledge commensurate with that of good readers in the same grade.  相似文献

A Christian analysis of the moral conflicts that exist among physicians and health care institutions requires a detailed treatment of the ethical issues in managed care. To be viable, managed care, as with any system of health care, must be economically sound and morally defensible. While managed care is per se a morally neutral concept, as it is currently practiced in the United States, it is morally dubious at best, and in many instances is antithetical to a Catholic Christian ethics of health care. The moral status of any system of managed care ought to be judged with respect to its congruence with Gospel teachings about the care of the sick, Papal Encyclicals, and the documents of the Second Vatican Council. In this essay, I look at the important conceptual or definitional issues of managed care, assess these concerns over against the source and content of a Catholic ethic of health care, and outline the necessary moral requirements of any licit system of health care.  相似文献

The present paper endeavours to discuss some of the potential issues inherent in the developmental work for indigenous psychologies, especially in the Western context. The discussion is made around two topical issues, sustainability and local knowledge. The developmental processes in indigenous psychologies are influenced by the inter- and intracommunity environment. It is important to trace the development of local knowledge in a sustained community environment. The cross-fertilization of ecological perspectives with indigenous psychological knowledge can enlighten our understandings of global issues in psychology as well as the applications of psychological knowledge to a local context. A theoretical model is proposed to highlight major social psychological processes in a participatory community environment − the model is expected to address essential contentious issues to the future of a globalized psychology, especially the way integrated local knowledge can lay the foundations of a globalized indigenous psychology.  相似文献

The Swedish driving test (SDT) was compared to theoretical concepts found in research literature (CRLs) with respect to the rated importance of the CRLs for the overall assessment of risk awareness and the five specific assessment areas used in the SDT. 116 traffic inspectors responded to questionnaires. Results show that visual search was the CRL given the highest rating, and that the assessment of risk awareness can be conceptualised as assessment of lower-order and higher-order cognitive functions. The assessment areas taxing higher-order cognitive functions were rated as most important for risk awareness, and visual search behaviour can be regarded as the best indicator of higher-order cognitive skills.  相似文献

To understand the impact which the newly self‐conscious technology of information is likely to have, and to develop that technology effectively, it is necessary to appreciate two previous revolutions in information technology, those which followed the introductions of writing and of printing. Understanding the role which these technologies have in our intellectual lives may help to avoid the misconceptions which are generated by the temptation to think of the instruments of communication as having a life independent of the use to which humans put those artifacts.  相似文献

In this—partly—expository paper the parameter identifiability and estimation of a general dynamic structural model under indirect observation will be considered from a system theoretic perspective. The general dynamic model covers (dynamic) factor analytic models, (dynamic) MIMIC models and Jöreskog's linear structural model as special cases. Its reduced form is—under a slightly different specification—known in system theory and econometrics as the stochastic, stationary version of the state-space model. By using concepts and methods from system theory, such as the observability and controllability concept, the (steady-state) Kalman filter and a general nonlinear ML_estimation procedure known as prediction-error estimation the general dynamic model will be identified. It will be shown that Jöreskog's LISREL-procedure is a special case of the prediction-error estimation procedure.  相似文献

This article addresses the broad question, How can virtual teams that manage a majority of their interactions through information and communication technologies (ICTs) be made more effective? Focusing specifically on interpersonal interactions, the task-technology fit paradigm is used as the foundation for a theoretical model that seeks to identify how such teams can match available communication technologies to the different types of interpersonal interactions in which they engage. The authors draw on media synchronicity theory to identify the functionalities of the wide range of ICTs available today, and map these functionalities onto the salient communication needs of 3 key interpersonal processes: (a) conflict management, (b) motivation and confidence building, and (c) affect management. The model also incorporates a temporal dimension examining how the communication needs, and hence, the need for ICT functionality, varies depending on the virtual team's developmental stage. Opportunities for future research arising from the theoretical model are discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents a perspective on stigma as an effect of leprosy. It identifies some of the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches to stigma reduction in leprosy and presents a rationale for considering alternative strategies. It is suggested that models used to explain health behavior in developed societies are inappropriate for explaining leprosy stigma or for developing strategies to address it. The author recommends due consideration of the alternative logic that characterizes cultural belief systems in countries where leprosy is a challenge. Criticism of the common practice of information dissemination as a strategy to address leprosy stigma is defended and the merits and limitations of an integrated health service in India is discussed. The author defends the suggestion that the principal objective of stigma interventions should be "normalization". An example of a Nepalese project based on empowerment theory is given to demonstrate how the transformation of identity from outcast to positive change agent, can effect "normalization".  相似文献

Areas of agreement and disagreement regarding knowledge representation and consciousness within implicit learning research are reviewed. It is argued that further progress in the field requires more precise definitions of abstract and episodic knowledge, and of conscious and unconscious forms of cognition. In particular, we argue that implicit learning research should be informed by more general theories of memory and performance, and that concepts such as consciousness are unlikely to act as explanatory constructs within this approach.  相似文献

Autobiographical reasoning is the activity of creating relations between different parts of one's past, present, and future life and one's personality and development. It embeds personal memories in a culturally, temporally, causally, and thematically coherent life story. Prototypical autobiographical arguments are presented. Culture and socializing interactions shape the development of autobiographical reasoning especially in late childhood and adolescence. Situated at the intersection of cognitive and narrative development and autobiographical memory, autobiographical reasoning contributes to the development of personality and identity, is instrumental in efforts to cope with life events, and helps to create a shared history.  相似文献

Summary Issues concerning some perceptual, attentional, and memory processes in bilinguals are reviewed and discussed with regard to language dominance and the interaction between the bilingual's language systems. The first part of the paper focuses on the speed of basic decoding and encoding operations: speed (automaticity) of processing is considered to be a major factor in language dominance. Speed of perception and rehearsal is shown to be affected by covert pronounceability of words which is typically poorer for the bilingual's weaker language. Factors causing short-time changes in the relationship between the non-balanced bilingual's languages are then considered: high information load, noise, rapid switching, and language set. Noise is thought of as enhancing language dominance by two mechanisms: the masking of inner speech, and increased arousal. The second part of the paper focuses mainly on the interaction between the bilingual's language systems. The issue of language independence/interdependence is illustrated by a task involving parallel encoding and decoding; it is shown that the input switch which is considered to be automatic can select information by language. Experiments on memory are commented on with reference to the two major models of bilingual-storage systems: the common-store hypothesis, and the separate-stores hypothesis. While most experimental data are clearly supportive of the former, it is argued that both language-specific and language-free storage takes place, depending on task demands. The problem of the retention of language-information along with item-information in verbal learning tasks is then discussed: in addition to the specific task demands (e.g., meaningfulness), retention time appears to be a decisive factor here. A model of bilingual memory storage is suggested which combines the two extreme models (i.e., the shared and the separate ones). The model assumes that working memory plays a different role with regard to the language-free and the language-specific stores respectively. This paper discusses psychotherapeutic work with cancer patients using a Lacanian approach to illness. In the first part of the paper, some of Lacan's notions of the body are discussed. In the second half, Lacan's understanding of the body is used to show how an appreciation of Lacan's work might enhance clinical/psychotherapeutic work with cancer patients.  相似文献
