A growing body of work suggests that narrative comprehension involves the simulation of the described events and actions (e.g., Barsalou, 2008, Matlock, 2004). Preliterate children’s ability to simulate a narrative character’s movements is explored here in three studies. Children’s simulations of a character’s movements were found to be constrained by their expectation of the duration of the described activities (i.e., walking vs. driving) and by their expectations about the motivating influence of certain psychological factors (i.e., character being eager or not eager to get to a location). These findings reveal an ability among preliterate children to create impressively rich and dynamic mental representations of narrative events and address, with a novel methodology, an identified need for greater exploration of precursors to narrative comprehension.  相似文献

As genetic counselors, we frequently offer support and information while shielding ourselves emotionally from the heartbreaking situations faced by our patients. To experience such circumstances firsthand changes our perspective on the world, ourselves, our relationships, and, inevitably, our role as genetic counselors. No one asks to be in the position of having to make a decision about one’s pregnancy, but such experiences may help us, as a profession, reflect on and improve our counseling. It is my hope that this personal account will provide other counselors with a real-life example they may draw upon when supporting patients in crisis. Here is my story.  相似文献

The rural church may be an effective health resource for rural Canadian women who have compromised access to health resources. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relevance of the Christian church and faith community nurses in promoting the health of rural Canadian women in the evolving rural context. The findings from an extensive literature search reveal that religion and spirituality often influence the health beliefs, behaviors, and decisions of rural Canadian women. The church and faith community nurses may therefore be a significant health resource for rural Canadian women, although this phenomenon has been significantly understudied.  相似文献

Scarring, a common and salient consequence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), remains an under-explored issue in the field. Thus, the current investigation explored NSSI scar perspectives using online testimony from members of a popular NSSI message board; focus was attenuated to a series of message board posts pertinent to people’s experiences with scars resulting from NSSI. Data (message board posts) were collected using the website’s search function. A total of 53 posts involving discussion of people’s NSSI scar perceptions and experiences were retained. A thematic analysis of the data indicated that individuals viewed their scars in a number of ways. Many viewed scars in a resilient manner, often in the context of a self-narrative. Others, however, were unaccepting of their scars (e.g. expressed feelings of shame, hatred, or disgust). For some, they were able to gradually accept their scars but only after a period of difficulty. And, finally, some individuals expressed mixed feelings toward their scars (e.g. a love/hate relationship). Hence, scars stemming from NSSI seem to differentially impact individuals who self-injure. Possible implications for research and clinical practice are discussed.  相似文献

Dewey’s social ontology could be characterized as a habit ontology, an ontology of habit qua second nature that offers us an account of intentionality, social statuses, institutions and norms in terms of habituations. Such an account offers us a promising alternative to contemporary intentionalist and deontic approaches to social ontology such as Searle’s. Furthermore, it could be the basis of a social ontology better suited to explain both the maintenance and the transformation of social reality.  相似文献

The purpose of the current study was to examine non-heterosexual women’s interpretations of “lesbian” material contained in pornography targeting male viewers and pornography made by and for lesbian women. Four focus groups were conducted (N=17) in which participants saw two pornographic sequences; one ostensibly for heterosexual males and the other for lesbian women. Participants then engaged in a semi-structured discussion for approximately 90 minutes. Conversations were tape-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for themes. Stated briefly, results indicated that participants differentiated between the two sequences on a variety of dimensions including performers’ bodies, the emphasis on penetration, and the presence or absence of intimacy. The implications of these findings and ideas for subsequent research are outlined.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, I reconstruct and evaluate Merleau-Ponty’s main responses to philosophical skepticism in the relevant parts of his work. To begin with, I introduce the skeptical argument that Merleau-Ponty most often tried to refute, namely, the dream argument. Secondly, I show how Merleau-Ponty, in his initial works, excludes the skeptical problem by appealing to a general contact with the world guaranteed by perception. Finally, I analyze how in his last texts Merleau-Ponty considers at least some uses of the skeptical arguments as tools to make our opaque contact with being explicit.  相似文献

For more than a decade, through re-working a composition based on a sepia photograph, Arshile Gorky (ca. 1904–1948) tried to give form and represent that which by definition defies forms and shatters one’s capacity for representation. Having witnessed the systematic ethnic cleansing of his people as a child, Gorky began a ‘journey’ in his attempt to comprehend his traumatic ordeal through Art. In 1926, with the safety of a constructed name and life, the artist started working on ‘The Artist and his Mother’ series. Focusing on the two versions of Gorky’s early painting and using relevant aspects of psychoanalytic theory, the paper explores his work through a psychoanalytic lens. Psychoanalytic theories on extreme traumatisation along with psychoanalytic notions of temporality will be utilised in an attempt to follow the artist’s struggle to re-create and rework aspects of his traumatic history.  相似文献

Pummer (Philosophical Review 123(1): 43–77, 2014) ingeniously wraps together issues from the personal identity literature with issues from the literature on desert. However, I wish to take issue with the main conclusion that he draws, namely, that we need to rethink the following principle: Desert.: When people culpably do very wrong or bad acts, they deserve punishment in the following sense: at least other things being equal they ought to be made worse off, simply in virtue of the fact that they culpably did wrong—even if they have repented, are now virtuous, and punishing them would benefit no one. (Pummer Philosophical Review 123(1):43–77, 2014: 43–44) Pummer offers an argument that is intended to show that this principle, along with widely-held views about personal identity, entails an inconsistent triad of propositions. I agree. But I think Pummer's argument attacks a straw man. I believe that no-one holds Desert, at least as it is stated, and that once the principle is stated correctly it is easy to see that no inconsistent triad follows from it. So, Desert does not need rethinking. It just needs to be stated correctly.  相似文献

According to John Martin Fischer and Anthony Brueckner’s unique version of the deprivation approach to accounting for death’s badness, it is rational for us to have asymmetric attitudes toward prenatal and posthumous nonexistence. In previous work, I have defended this approach against a criticism raised by Jens Johansson by attempting to show that Johansson’s criticism relies on an example that is incoherent. Recently, Duncan Purves has argued that my defense reveals an incoherence not only in Johansson’s example but also in Fischer and Brueckner’s approach itself. Here I argue that by paying special attention to a certain feature of Fischer and Brueckner’s approach, we can dispense of not only Johansson’s criticism but also of Purves’s objection to Fischer and Brueckner’s approach.  相似文献

The field of cancer genetics is evolving rapidly, and much has changed over the past ten years in the way services are being provided and by whom they are being provided. We recount here our experience with the evolution of cancer genetic services in a community setting, focusing on collaboration with non-genetics providers to offer genetic testing for hereditary cancer. This approach allows for the most effective use of genetic counselors’ expertise for challenging cases, and enables the patient to remain within their community to allow for better access to resources for long-term follow-up.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper describes the contribution of earlier traumatic loss to the later violent eruptions, with fatal consequences, of two young men, one who killed his mother and one who killed an unknown woman. Their developing personalities became disordered during their disturbed childhoods and the link between these developing personality disorders and psychoses is referred to. The need for long-term treatments is emphasised, as well as the importance of communication between therapist and clinical team.  相似文献

Gary Ostertag (Philos Stud 146:249–267, 2009) has presented a new puzzle for Russellianism about belief reports. He argues that Russellians do not have the resources to solve this puzzle in terms of pragmatic phenomena. I argue to the contrary that the puzzle can be solved according to Nathan Salmon’s (Frege’s puzzle, 1986) pragmatic account of belief reports, provided that the account is properly understood. Specifically, the puzzle can be solved so long as Salmon’s guises are not identified with sentences.  相似文献
