FlekkØy, K. Associative frequency as a measure of associative strength. Scand. J. Psychol., 1973, 14, 99–102. -Associative frequency in a group of subjects has been assumed to reflect associative strength in the individual. This hypothesis was tested by comparing frequency rank of responses in a single-word free-association situation with sequence of emission of the same responses in a continued situation. The results indicate that associative frequency reflects associative strength, but not to an extent which will allow the identification of individual associative-strength hierarchies.  相似文献

In a combined verbal and motor paired-associate task, nonsense names and button-pushing responses were learned for three random shapes, with verbal training beginning after 3, 12, or 24 motor learning trials. Earlier studies indicated that concurrent verbal and motor learning produce a strong tendency for the naming and button-pushing responses to be learned in “consistent” pairs. According to the theoretical analysis presented, the verbal-motor consistency is explained by the development of name-button associations. It was predicted that these associations affect both motor errors and correct responses, that their effects are greater for correct responses, and that attenuation of the effects due to delay in verbal training is gr, eater for motor errors. The results are in good agreement with the predictions, and they suggest that name-button associations develop rapidly even under delayed verbal training.  相似文献

Two experiments contrasted the effects of high and low wgo strength (as measured by Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionaire) on confidence thresholds (FG scores) under the anticipation and recall methods. High ego strength resulted in larger FG scores under the anticipation method- weakly so in Experiment I but significantly so in Experiment II, where subjects were selected from greater extremes of ego strength. This inferiority extended to trails to criterion and a measure of the associative-learning stage as well. Tasks for extending the generality of the obtained relationship of ego strength and confidence thresholds in paired-associate learning are suggested.  相似文献

Walker and Tarte (1963) postulate that at short retention intervals high arousal paired-associates are reproduced more poorly than low arousal items. Walker and colleagues believe that this hypothesis is confirmed by their paired-associate learning studies. However, results of these paired-associate learning studies are position confounded artifacts. Better recall of low arousal items at short-term retention is caused by the coincidence of the recency effect and low arousal at the end of the trial. When these position effects are controlled there is no action decrement for the high arousal paired-associates. To test this assumption, the Kleinsmith and Kaplan study (1963) was replicated and two other variations were conducted. In these three studies with 76 subjects, which were tested at two minutes or 1 week, the action decrement occurs only when the two position effects coincide.  相似文献

The proposal is made to consider a paired-associate item as becoming conditioned to its correct response in all-or-none fashion, and that prior to this conditioning event the subject guesses responses at random to an unlearned item. These simple assumptions enable the derivation of an extensive number of predictions about paired-associate learning. The predictions compare very favorably with the results of an experiment discussed below. This research was supported by a grant, M-3849, from the National Institutes of Mental Health, United States Public Health Service.  相似文献

This study is concerned with recent claims that subjective measures of word frequency are more suitable than are standard word frequency counts as indices of actual frequency of word encounter. A multiple regression study is reported, which shows that the major predictor of familiarity ratings is word learning age. Objective measures of spoken and written word frequency made independent contributions to the variance. It is concluded that rated familiarity is not an appropriate substitute for objective frequency measures. A multiple regression study of word naming latency is reported, and shows that rated word learning age is a better predictor of word naming latency than are spoken word frequency, written word frequency, rated familiarity, and other variables. Possible theoretical explanations for age-of-acquisition effects are discussed and it is concluded that early-learned words have a more complete representation in a phonological output lexicon. This conclusion is related to relevant developmental literature.  相似文献

Eysenck has theorized that introverts are high in arousal and should show the pattern of results which has been displayed in several experiments by subjects confronted with high-arousal stimulus materials: poor performance on short-term and good performance on long-term measures of retention. Extraverts, on the other hand, are thought to be low in arousal and should show the reverse pattern as displayed by subjects confronted with low-arousal stimulus materials. The relevant experiments conducted in Britain confirm these predictions. The relevant United States studies do not. The method used in the present study, in which Americans were subjects, is that of an experiment of Kleinsmith and Kaplan (1964) which found the patterns of retention predicted on the basis of the subjects' exposure to high- or low-arousal stimulus materials. But, as in the other tests of Eysenck's predictions, arousal was measured in terms of introversion and extraversion. The results failed to support Eysenck's formulation.  相似文献
