An on site stress workshop for teachers: The creation of a therapeutic group environment

This paper describes an ongoing stress workshop conducted for 5 years in an elementary school. The school was located in an economically deprived area in the Bronx, New York. Similarities and differences between on-site workshops and therapy groups are discussed. The developmental stages of the group and its corresponding issues are analyzed in terms of group process, transference, and resistance. Illustrative vignettes are presented. The positive effects of group dynamic and group therapy interventions on the participating group as well as on nongroup personnel is demonstrated. Suggestions for adapting group therapy methods in school settings are also presented.This paper was presented as a poster at the Annual Conference of the American Group Psychotherapy Association held in Atlanta, Georgia, February 1995.

Treatment of alcoholic couples in outpatient group therapy

This paper summarizes special issues that group leaders are likely to encounter when adapting their skills to outpatient group therapy with alcoholic couples. More specifically, the paper: (a) discusses the advantages of treating alcoholic couples in a group as opposed to individual couple's therapy; (b) outlines the parameters of a couples group with alcoholic members that differentiate it from working with other kinds of couples in group; and (c) provides guidelines and techniques for tackling some of the specific kinds of problems and situations that arise.This paper was presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, New York City, February, 1985.The author wishes to acknowledge the contribution of Geraldine Alpert, Ph.D., whose thoughtful comments and discussion helped to crystallize the concepts presented.     

Techniques for handling resistances in group psychotherapy with severely disturbed patients

There has been an increased interest in recent years in the treatment of those with severe psychopathology through application of object relations theory and modern ego psychology. Yet, for the past 20 years, such patients have been treated in day hospitals where rehabilitation and socialization concepts have been employed. This paper integrates some of the advances in psychoanalytic theory with more established methods of milieu therapy. In the patients studied, the therapists noted the presence of severe envy, dependency, passivity and with-holding, an intolerance for aggression along with an intransigent, paranoid-schizoid position. The techniques described here worked through the effects of these resistances so that the patients could use the psychotherapy group, and the entire milieu, more constructively than they did before.Ruthe Feilbert-Willis, C.S.W. was formerly Senior Social Worker in the Adolescent and Adult Day Hospital at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, in White Plains, New York.He was a psychiatric resident at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, in White Plains, New York, during the time the clinical work of this paper was undertaken.

In this paper some philosophical problems in gerontology are examined through an analysis of the nature of scientific explanation. An argument is presented that claims that gerontology avoids many of the meta-scientific problems associated with time and advanced chronological age because these terms will tend to be obviated or “screened off” in scientific explanations in gerontology.

Group process in short-term outpatient therapy groups for schizophrenics

The short form of the group climate questionnaire (GCQ-S) was used to evaluate process in three 12-session therapy groups for outpatient schizophrenics. Results showed no difference on the Engaged dimension between the short-term schizophrenic groups and either a normative sample of outpatient neurotic groups or the first 26 sessions of a long-term outpatient schizophrenic group. However, the short-term groups scored significantly lower (p<.001) on the Avoiding and Conflict dimensions as compared with either long-term sample. The session-to-session GCQ-S dimension pattern did not support the presence of sequential group stages, but there was a tendency for the Engaged scores to increase and the Avoiding and Conflict scores to decrease as time went on.The authors gratefully acknowledge K.
