In a series of six experiments, cholinergic mediation of behavior was studied in immature rats. It was found that although scopolamine disrupted discriminative choice behavior in both 15- and 23-day-old rat pups, it increased latency to choice in 15-day-olds and decreased latency to choice in 23-day-olds. This disruption of discriminated choice behavior was not due to differential shock thresholds or differences in locomotor activity between drug-treated and control animals, nor was it specific to a T-maze shock-escape discrimination task. These results suggest that central cholinergic mediation of different behaviors may mature at different rates.  相似文献

A tracking procedure was used to investigate the ability of rats to regulate their ambient temperature. Rats were placed in a chamber with two levers; depressions of one lever controlled a cold-water flow (11 degrees C) and the other controlled the flow of hot water (57 +/- 1 degrees C). If it alternated responses, the rat could regulate temperature within these two extremes. With training, this regulatory behavior resulted in a narrow environmental temperature range that approximated normal body temperature.  相似文献

Postnatal locomotor activity was investigated in rabbit, rat, and guinea pig. A peak was found in this behavior at 5 days of age in the rabbit and, in confirmation of earlier studies, at 15-20 days in the rat. Neonatal guinea pigs showed no variation in activity levels due to age. The guinea pig is born at an advanced stage of neural maturation in comparison with the rat, and the rabbit is born at an intermediate stage. This difference accounts for the observed variations in postnatal activity profiles if it is assumed that the behavioral peak coincides with the transition from a stage of primarily mesencephalic arousal system maturation to a stage of primarily diencephalic and telencephalic inhibitory system maturation.  相似文献

Reexamination of spectral mechanisms in the rat (Rattus norvegicus)   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The spectral mechanisms of the rat were studied in electrophysiological and behavioral experiments. The photopic electroretinogram (ERG) was recorded (a) to rapidly flickering lights, (b) during the cone phase of dark adaptation, and (c) with a flicker photometric procedure. Each procedure indicated the presence of a single cone mechanism having a lambda max of about 510 nm. Increment-threshold spectral sensitivity functions measured in a behavioral test situation yielded the same conclusion. A behavioral experiment failed to produce any evidence for the presence of color vision in this rodent. The consistent conclusion from both behavioral and electrophysiological experiments is that the rat retina contains only a single photopic spectral mechanism.  相似文献

Four previously published cases of dominant thalamic lesion in which the author has participated are reviewed to gain a better understanding of thalamic participation in lexical-semantic functions. Naming deficits in two cases support Nadeau and Crosson's (1997) hypothesis of a selective engagement mechanism involving the frontal lobes, inferior thalamic peduncle, nucleus reticularis, and other thalamic nuclei, possibly the centromedian nucleus. This mechanism selectively engages those cortical areas required to perform a cognitive task, while maintaining other areas in a state of relative disengagement. Deficits in selective engagement disproportionately affect lexical retrieval based on semantic input, as opposed to lexical and sublexical processes, because the former is more dependent upon this attentional system. The concept of selective engagement is also useful in understanding thalamic participation in working memory, as supported by data from one recent functional neuroimaging study. Other processes also may be compromised in more posterior thalamic lesions which damage the pulvinar but not other components of this selective engagement system. A third case with aphasia after a more superior and posterior thalamic lesion also had oral reading errors similar to those in neglect dyslexia. The pattern of deficits suggested a visual processing problem in the early stages of reading. The fourth case had a category-specific naming deficit after posterior thalamic lesion. Taken together, the latter two cases indicate that the nature of language functions in more posterior regions of the dominant thalamus depends upon the cortical connectivity of the thalamic region. Together, findings from the four cases suggest that thalamic nuclei and systems are involved in multiple processes which directly or indirectly support cortical language functions.  相似文献

Lesions of the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus (VMN) led to an immediate increase in food intake but not to any increase in hoarding activity. Later, when subjects were very obese, they failed to hoard even in response to a 16-hr. deprivation schedule, although this schedule did produce hoarding if body weights were held at, or were brought down to, preoperative levels. These results indicate that the lateral hypothalamic mechanism responsible for hoarding and feeding responds to long-term nutritional factors, and that it is not directly affected by the short-term satiety mechanisms in the VMN. These findings support the hypothesis (a) that even “non-physiological” activities (e.g. hoarding, exploration) are motivated by physiological needs, and (b) that the reason these activities do not ordinarily covary with physiological drives is that, unlike the physiological drives, they are not subject to inhibition by the hypothalamic satiety mechanisms.  相似文献

In Experimental 1, rat pups 1, 3, 5, or 7 days old received a Phase 1 S1-US (Stimulus 1-unconditioned stimulus) pairing calculated to establish a first-order conditioned aversion to S1 (lemon scent). On the next day each pup received a Phase 2 S2-S1 pairing designed to establish a second-order aversion to S2 (orange scent). Pups at all ages displayed a first-order aversion to S1, but only pups given Phase 2 training when 6 or 8 days old displayed a second-order aversion to S2. Experiment 2 revealed that pups that received the S1-US pairing when 3 days old acquired an aversion to S2 if they were 6 days old when they received the S2-S1 pairing but not if they received the pairing when 4 days old. In Experiment 3, two Phase 2 treatments were compared. One was identical to that employed in Experiments 1 and 2: Pups 4 days old received a sequential exposure to S2 and S1. Another set of pups received a modified treatment: They were exposed first to S2 and then jointly to both S2 and S1. Only pups in the latter set displayed an aversion to S2. It is suggested that these results reflect developmental differences in the memory processes mediating the rat's experience with olfactory stimulation.  相似文献

The performance of developing zebrafish in both classical and operant conditioning assays was tested with a particular focus on the emergence of these learning behaviors during development. Strategically positioned visual cues paired with electroshocks were used in two fully automated assays to investigate both learning paradigms. These allow the evaluation of the behavioral performance of zebrafish continuously throughout development, from larva to adult. We found that learning improves throughout development, starts reliably around week 3, and reaches adult performance levels at week 6. Adult fish quickly learned to perform perfectly, and the expression of the learned behavior is manifestly controlled by vision. The memory is behaviorally expressed in adults for at least 6 h and retrievable for at least 12 h.  相似文献

During the course of ontogenesis the developing rat has been reported to pass through a transient period of intense behavioral arousal which peaks at 15 days of age, a phenomenon that has been interpreted to reflect a sequential caudal to rostral development of excitatory and inhibitory systems in the mammalian brain. In a series of four experiments it was shown (a) that this period of intense hyperactivity occurs only when the animal is tested alone in an unfamiliar environment, that the degree of arousal is proportional to the dissimilarity between the home cage and the test environment, and that isolation per se is insufficient to elicit the arousal response; (b) that environmental temperature has a minimal influence on the degree of behavioral arousal seen in either familiar of unfamiliar environments; (c) that unlearned responses to pheromonal or other naturally occurring nest odors do not suppress the high levels of locomotor activity evoked by unfamiliar environments in the 15-day old rat pup; and (d) that it is fear or distress evoked by the unfamiliar environment rather than curiosity that underlies this developmental phenomenon. It is concluded that the sequential increase and decrease in locomotor activity that occurs during ontogenesis cannot be used to support the principle of caudal to rostral development of excitatory and inhibitory centers in the central nervous system.  相似文献

Contextual fear conditioning emerges around post-natal day (PD) 23 in the rat. This is thought to reflect hippocampus-dependent conjunctive learning, which binds the individual features of the context into a unified representation (Rudy, 1993). However, context conditioning can also be supported by hippocampus-independent, feature-based simple associations (Rudy, 2009) and these may operate at PD 23-24 (Pugh & Rudy, 1996). To address this issue, we studied the ontogeny of a variant of contextual fear conditioning, termed the context-preexposure-facilitation-effect (CPFE), in which exposure to context and (immediate) foot shock occur on successive occasions. This variant requires conjunctive as opposed to feature-based simple associations (Rudy, 2009). We tested PD 17, 24, and 31 rats on the CPFE vs. conventional context conditioning (Exp. 1) and on the CPFE with stronger reinforcement (Exp. 2). The CPFE emerged on PD 24 regardless of reinforcer strength and in parallel with context conditioning. Infusions of the NMDA-receptor antagonist, MK-801, into the dorsal hippocampus just before pre-exposure on PD 24 eliminated the CPFE, whereas infusions occurring after pre-exposure had no effect (Exp. 3). These findings demonstrate a role of hippocampal NMDA receptors in the CPFE as early as PD 24 and implicate conjunctive learning mechanisms in the ontogeny of contextual fear conditioning.  相似文献

Four experiments attempted to produce behavior in the rat parallel to the behavior characteristic of learned helplessness in the dog. When rats received escapable, inescapable, or no shock and were later tested in jump-up escape, both inescapable and no-shock controls failed to escape. When bar pressing, rather than jumping up, was used as the tested escape response, fixed ratio (FR) 3 was interfered with by inescapable shock, but not lesser ratios. With FR-3, the no-shock control escaped well. Interference with escape was shown to be a function of the inescapability of shock and not shock per se: Rats that were "put through" and learned a prior jump-up escape did not become passive, but their yoked, inescapable partners did. Rats, as well as dogs, fail to escape shock as a function of prior inescapability, exhibiting learned helplessness.  相似文献

Rat fetuses exhibit motor and cardiac responses to chemosensory stimulation on Days 20 and 21 of gestation. The first experiment demonstrated that fetuses exhibit an increase in overall motor activity and decrease in heartrate in response to an initial intraoral infusion of a lemon solution. After a series of nine exposures, however, fetuses no longer exhibit motor or cardiac responses to lemon infusion, suggesting the existence of a habituation-like process. Responsiveness recovers spontaneously following a 3- to 9-min period without stimulation. In a second experiment, a dishabituation treatment was administered to distinguish habituation, which is a centrally mediated decrement in response, from effector fatigue, sensory adaptation, and other peripheral mechanisms that can result in reduced responsiveness. A single infusion of mint following a series of nine lemon exposures was effective in reinstating fetal motor responses to lemon on both Days 20 and 21, but reinstated cardiac responses only on Day 21. Rat fetuses habituate to repeated chemosensory stimulation, suggesting the utility of the habituation paradigm in measuring CNS development during the perinatal period.  相似文献

Competitive fighting was obtained in pairs of like-sexed laboratory rats by placing a single piece of food into the food hopper following 48 hr. of food deprivation. The fighting was characterized by offensive sideways posture, full aggressive posture, and bite and kick attack. Tests were conducted at 110-120 days of age on pairs of animals that had been housed together since weaning. Fighting was more frequent in pairs consisting of nonlittermates than in pairs of littermates, and it was equally frequent in male and female pairings. Probability of fighting was enhanced by prior experience with food deprivation, and attack was most often initiated by the heavier animal of the pair.  相似文献

Intravenous injection of histamine to rabbits was used as a prototype in an investigation of the mechanism of sudden death due to anaphylaxis and other causes. The "dive" reflex, bradycardia due to activation of the ophthalmic branch of the fifth cranial nerve, was induced in thirty-seven of the animals while they inhaled a very small amount of cigarette smoke. Associated with the resulting bradycardia were lowered blood pH and increased serum content of lactic acid and potassium and increased peripheral arterial constriction with elevation of diastolic blood pressure. Intravenous injection of 1 ml of histamine in the presence of the dive reflex induced potentially fatal ventricular arrhythmia, but no cardiac disturbance when administered while the dive reflex was inactive, thereby strongly suggesting that sudden death in anaphylaxis may involve an overzealous response to a normally protective neural reflex.  相似文献
