The clergy and church are deeply involved in aiding persons who have emotional problems. Many of those seeking help manifest psychotic symptoms. This paper addresses the issue of how organized religion can better understand and minister to the needs of those suffering severe emotional distress. Programs and models at national and local levels are discussed, with an emphasis upon the latter. Local level models include mental health promoting aspects of local church functions, pastoral counseling programs of the local church, the Wholistic Health Center (WHC), Community Organization for Personal Enrichment (COPE), Christian Action Ministry (CAM), and Mennonite Mental Health Services. Clinical vignettes illustrate the functioning of these models. This work was, in part, done at and supported by the Harvard University School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts.  相似文献

The authors provide a theoretical introduction for the church's ministry to singles by reviewing the family therapy literature as it pertains to familial disengagement or enmeshment and interpersonal mutuality or isolation. Belongingness based on consanguinity must eventually be replaced by belongingness rooted in consensuality or commitment. The single person must seek such commitment outside the institution of marriage. The church can offer belongingness through establishing parity, de-emphasizing segregation, promoting inclusion, and practicing community.  相似文献

Summary This paper describes a Court House Chaplaincy Program in which Clinical Pastoral Education trainees and local clergymen were assigned to regular voluntary assignment as chaplains of the Harvey County Court House. Worked out in coordination with the Newton Ministerial Alliance and the commissioners of Harvey County, the project served court house clients, staff, and pastors as well. The paper describes a model for community collaboration that could be operated in many settings. In this plan, the mental health center clergyman joins with other clergymen in the community in a task that is directed toward the community's whole good and not specifically a project operated by the mental health center. The importance of careful preparation, of political negotiations, of responsible supervision, and clarity regarding the issues of funding are also illustrated.  相似文献

Beginning its sixth year of publication, Material Religion is an interdisciplinary journal that seeks to gather the best work from around the world engaged in materializing the study of religions. The editors welcome original scholarship on any religion and from any period in human history that treats material objects and practices as primary evidence and engages in critical reflection on the cultural construction of materiality. In this article the editors reflect on the formation and format of the journal, the force and direction of its articles and other features, the question of what constitutes the material culture of religion, and finally the role of materiality in the current study of religions. Along the way, the editors consider new theories and concerns that have been taken up in the journal's pages and address the range of disciplines and interests that are represented in the different departments of the journal.  相似文献

Research on the diaconate in recent years has provided a stimulus for discussion on possible reform and renewal of the ordained ministry. Whilst some critics see this as arising merely from an attempt at a uniformity which might further the search for unity in the Church, this article argues that there are in fact certain natural reasons for reforming the diaconate. The author focuses on the relationship of mission and diakonia and the renewal of the diaconate with each other. Though the term ‘mission’ is not often used, the article follows the central points of ecumenical missiological discussion, addressing the crucial question, ‘What is the place of diakonia and the diaconate in the holistic mission of the Church?’ There is thence a certain logic in the argument, leading to the conclusions the author finally draws.  相似文献
