Leisure counselling is defined as the systematic exploitation of a client's past, existing or prospective hobbies, activities and interests for broad psychotherapeutic purposes. It functions as a powerful agent in the invigoration of a range of existing but inadequate coping skills, and can also act in an innovatory style when such key skills are absent. The effective functioning of leisure counselling, as this paper argues, requires a methodology of application, and the author's main contribution has been to identify a triad of approach techniques open to the leisure counsellor, namely, distraction, anticipation and confrontation, and to outline appropriate settings in which they may be fruitfully implemented. Effective leisure counselling requires a new mode of thinking, wherein leisure becomes instrumental and hobbies, activities and interests, its tools. So as to sharpen awareness of the full possible range of leisure counselling's application, this paper outlines how it may be applied across a wide span of coping needs and covers three broad domains: the need to ease phobias, panics, stress and tension states, and the aftermath of traumatic episodes; the need to create and sustain positive moods; and the need to contain and limit the destructive demands of habits and impulses as well as address the very sharp therapeutic challenge of obsessions and compulsions. 相似文献

The primary care groups (PCGs) newly introduced to the National Health Service require general practitioners and primary care teams to improve the health of their communities by addressing the health needs of their population, promoting the health of that population and working with other organizations to deliver effective and appropriate care. Community-oriented primary care (COPC) is an internationally tested model for primary health care development which is now being employed within the UK. This paper outlines the COPC model, and demonstrates how the skills and knowledge base of counselling psychologists and primary care counselling can contribute to a community-oriented primary care approach. 相似文献

Telephone counsellors must make accurate assessments of callers' needs so as to provide appropriate counselling help or referral. But few researchers have examined counsellors' conceptualising abilities in relation to their counselling skill. Two studies involving telephone counsellors were carried out. The first relied on counsellors' post-interview conceptualisations of callers' problems and needs and found no link between the accuracy of these conceptualisations and counselling skill. The second used Kagan's Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) to retrieve counsellors' conceptualisations made during the course of their interviews. The accuracy of these conceptualisations-in-action was related to level of counselling skill. Implications for training and research are discussed 相似文献

The RSA Certificate in Counselling Skills in the Development of Learning has emerged as a significant nationally validated course and award for staff working in post-compulsory education and training. The award encourages the uses of experiential learning and of self-assessment. The approach used to reflect on experience is the Learning Record, which is also the basis of, and mechanism for, assessment of the learner's progress. The precise nature of the Learning Record has however been unclear, since the form as well as the content is decided by the learner. Experience of approaches to the creation of Learning Records by Youth Training Scheme staff following this course suggests that they always include a diary or journal but that this may either be integral to, or separate from, the Learning Record itself. The form taken by the reflective and analytical element also varies, and the authors identify four main approaches to the creation of Learning Records adopted by learners. They suggest some principles underlying the successful compilation and use of Learning Records and commend this approach to organising reflection for experiential learning in staff training and development. 相似文献

This paper demonstrates how the multimodal approach, developed by Arnold Lazarus (1989), can be used to aid assessment of a client suffering from the effects of chronic, work-related stress. A rationale is provided for integrating the multimodal approach with rational emotive behaviour therapy theory, techniques and strategies (Kwee & Ellis, 1997). A modality profile and a second order BASIC I.D. profile were developed and used as the link between assessment and the stress counselling programme (Palmer, 1992). The paper presents the Lewisham Community Child and Family Service (LCCFS), a community‐based intervention providing psychosocial help for children, young people, parents and families. The service is focused on early intervention, prevention and promotion in the improvement of local health. It works under a service framework based on inter‐agency collaboration, and a counselling model based on community and interpersonal partnerships, grounded in personal construct theory (Kelly, 1955). The policy demands and local need for accessible and acceptable mental health are discussed, and quantitative and qualitative findings of the needs assessment preceding the establishment of the LCCFS are presented, supporting the need for community mental health provision. The feasibility for the LCCFS to reconcile and meet the policy demands and the needs of parents with respect to child psychosocial help and services are discussed. Aims: This study explored young homeless people's views of counselling, with a view to considering how the counselling profession can better meet their needs. Method: A small scale qualitative research project was undertaken in two residential projects for young homeless people. Data was gathered through focus groups and then analysed using grounded theory. Findings: The study revealed a lack of trust in counsellors and counselling, as well as a dislike of the counselling process. Implications for practice: Some suggestions for how best to work with this particularly marginalised client group are discussed. These include ways of making counselling more engaging, raising the profile of the counsellor in the young person's environment and having an awareness of the needs specific to at‐risk young people. 相似文献

With reports continually demonstrating increased demand and severity of student mental health needs, it is important to gain a fuller understanding of the impact on embedded student counselling services. The aims of this research were to identify (a) service similarities, (b) factors which impact on services, (c) characteristics of service users, and (d) the use of therapeutic technology (e.g. online self-help). An online survey was completed by 113 heads of UK student counselling services across Higher Education (HE), Further Education (FE), and Sixth Form Colleges (SFCs), to capture service data from the academic year 2013/14. Students predominantly received high-intensity support (e.g. counselling) and referrals increased over 3 years. Challenges to embedded counselling services and their implications for development are discussed. 相似文献

This research aimed to determine the correlation between emotional intelligence (EI) and counselling skills of Turkish prospective psychological counsellors and to investigate differences in both EI and counselling skills in terms of sex, previous experience of group studies, and class levels. Within a correlational pattern, the sample of the study comprised a total of 349 prospective psychological counsellors; 266 females (76.2%) and 83 (23.8%) males. The data were collected via a Personal Information Form, Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory ? and Microcounseling Skill Discrimination Scale?. The results indicated a significant negative correlation between EI and emotional reflection and general counselling skills; no significant correlation between EI and content reflection. 相似文献

Employee Assistance Programs have received more attention in combatting alcoholism than have Employee Counselling Programs. The needs from which these two types of programs arose differ, yet the similarities between the two are greater than their contrasts. The importance in realisation of their similarities is that in so far that the spread of Employee Assistance Programs is restricted in the U.K. relative to other countries. A Comparison of the two types of program suggests there to be a greater potential benefit with the Employee Counselling Program, since it does not only have a curative element, but by its very nature, also a preventative one.Since the major characteristic of Employee Counselling Programs is to advise on coping strategies, problems tend to be brought earlier for counselling, and, indeed, by counselling antecedent problems, drinking problems still to be incurred are being negated. 相似文献

The black consciousness psychology or philosophy of Steve Biko, the political activist who died in police detention in the 1970s in South Africa, is considered. Those aspects of the philosophy relating to empowerment, self-concept development, the internalisation of racism and the racial identity theory of black people are discussed. It is suggested that the 'frank talk' method is a particularly useful tool in counselling and psychotherapy with culturally diverse clients. These ideas and the issue of empowerment of black clients are explored through the examination of a case vignette. In reflecting on the narrative of Jo-Anne, the need for counselling and psychotherapy to accommodate ethnic-minority cultural traditions of healing is affirmed. 相似文献

The relative effectiveness of counsellor skills training for trainees with and without traditional undergraduate backgrounds in psychology was assessed during a simulated counselling interview following a five-week training programme based upon micro-skills and a systematic model. Background Mastering counselling communication skills is one of the requirements that lead to the diploma of a registered European psychologist. The microcounseling method proves to be effective in training these skills. Aim Research into the effectiveness of the microcounseling method often reports overall effect sizes only. The aim of this study was to investigate the adequate use of separate counselling communication skills (seven basic skills: minimal encouragements; asking questions; paraphrasing; reflection of feeling; concreteness; summarizing; and situation clarification and five advanced skills: advanced accurate empathy; confrontation; positive relabelling; examples of one's own; and directness) after respectively a basic and an advanced training in these skills. Sample Participants were 583 first year or second year bachelor students in psychology who took the counselling communication skills progress test (CSPT). The participants are divided in a group of freshmen, who had not received any training in counselling communication skills; first year students, who had received a training in basic skills; second year students who had followed a training in advanced skills and a control group. Method A between‐subject design, a within‐subject design and a pre‐test–post‐test‐control group design were used to examine the scores on these skills. Results Seven basic skills and four advanced skills had large effect sizes. One advanced skill had a moderate effect size. Conclusio The microcounseling method is very effective on the level of separate microskills. However, students perform better on the basic skills than on the advanced skills. More training seems to be needed in the latter to achieve the same level of mastery. 相似文献
