Two experiments with pigeons employed a serial autoshaping design in which food was presented on every trial, and the initial element was of variable duration. When the first element was followed randomly by one stimulus of fixed short duration and another stimulus of fixed long duration, then it elicited a relatively high rate of responding. But when the second elements were of equal mean durations, whether fixed or variable, then responding during the first element was relatively slow. Two explanations for these findings were considered. One stipulates that the rate of responding during a stimulus is related to its predictive accuracy, the other stipulates that responding is influenced by the reduction in uncertainty that follows the offset of a stimulus. It is argued that the evidence favours the first of these alternatives.  相似文献

Research indicates that attentional deficits exist in aphasic individuals. However, relatively little is known about auditory vigilance performance in individuals with aphasia. The current study explores reaction time (RT) and accuracy in 10 aphasic participants and 10 nonbrain-damaged controls during linguistic and nonlinguistic auditory vigilance tasks. Findings indicate that the aphasic group was less accurate during both tasks than the control group, but was not slower in their accurate responses. Further examination of the data revealed variability in the aphasic participants' RT contributing to the lower accuracy scores.  相似文献

Findings from research examining the moderating influence of physical fitness on age-related declines in speeded cognitive tasks have been inconsistent. This may, in part, be due to a failure to take into account the varying demands placed upon individuals by different psychomotor tasks. Additionally, it is rare for studies to consider the motor function in relation to age and physical fitness. These factors were examined in a sample of employed men aged between 22 and 64 years. Multiple regression analyses identified statistically significant Age×Fitness interactions in respect to unusually slow latencies, or blocks, in choice responding at higher levels of task demand. Significant Age×Fitness interactions were also found in predictions of motor performance, although that variable did not account for all of the variance explained in psychomotor measures. It is concluded that Age×Fitness interactions are most likely in situations of high task demands and that limitations in attentional capacity may underlie those interactions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A multielement design was used to evaluate the effects of three reinforcement conditions on the free-operant and challenging responses of two individuals with severe disabilities. Preference assessments identified three stimuli that could function as reinforcers for each participant. Reinforcers were delivered on a variable ratio schedule for a free-operant response. In the participant-selected condition, each reinforcer delivery consisted of placing an array of three different stimuli in front of the participant, who was allowed to select one. In the constant condition, each reinforcer delivery consisted of placing an array of three identical stimuli in front of the participant. Within each session the three stimuli were held constant, but varied across sessions. In the experimenter-selected condition, each reinforcer delivery consisted of an array of three identical stimuli being placed in front of the participant. Within each session, the three stimuli were presented in an order predetermined by the experimenter such that, on average, each stimulus was available every third reinforcer delivery. For both individuals, the participant-selected condition resulted in lower average rates of challenging responses and slightly higher average free-operant response rates. No differences in responding were noted between the constant condition and the experimenter-selected condition. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Response time and accuracy are sensitive measures of overall performance but may mask underlying response strategies. For example, analysis of latency and accuracy measures produced in a computerized-maze task does not reveal whether rhesus monkeys really “solve a maze” or simply move as much as is possible toward the target, negotiating barriers through trial and error as they encounter them. Regression procedures are described for analyzing response path against several hypothetical response curves, and analyses of response path for rhesus monkeys’ performance on the computerized MAZE task are presented as an illustration. The data suggest that rhesus monkeys do invoke a response strategy of solving the maze, because the observed response topography is significantly associated with the optimal path of responding. Many experimental paradigms should similarly benefit from analysis of the response paths that subjects exhibit.  相似文献

Previous work has amply demonstrated divided attention “costs” both in single-task multistimulus visual processing and in performance of multiple simple tasks; however, the relationship between the two has not been clarified. This article postulates two distinct causes: (1) visual processes that commence without delays and proceed simultaneously, but show lingering mutual interference dependent upon complexity, and (2) discrete queueing of the response selection stage. The first has resource-like properties, while the second has bottleneck-like properties. Either or both can generate performance costs observed in any particular situation, accounting for a variety of previous results. To test this theory, the effects of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) on accuracy and speed in performing dual choice tasks were examined. The first two experiments involved a choice response to a tone as a first task, and a second task requiring complex perceptual decisions (digit identification or conjunction search) with masked displays and unspeeded second responses. Reducing the SOA had negligible effects upon second-task accuracy, and performance in the two tasks was virtually independent. However, when speeded manual (Exp. 3) or vocal (Exp. 4) responses were required on the same second task, dramatic interference was observed, with strong positive dependencies between reaction times (RTs) on the two tasks. When both tasks involved complex visual displays, SOA reductions produced dramatic interference, but no dependencies between performance, whether the first task involved a speeded (Exp. 5) or unspeeded (Exp. 6) response. The results reject pure late-selection accounts and general capacity sharing models, and support the two-component theory. They also suggest that standard use of the term “attention,” suggesting a single resource or mechanism, is highly misleading.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a speed or accuracy strategy on response interference control during choice step execution. Eighteen healthy young participants were instructed to execute forward stepping on the side indicated by a central arrow (←, left vs. →, right) under task instructions that either emphasized speed or accuracy of response in the neutral condition. In the flanker condition, they were additionally required to ignore the 2 flanking arrows on each side (→→→→→, congruent or →→←→→, incongruent). Errors in the direction of the initial weight transfer (APA errors) and the step execution times were measured from the vertical force data. APA error was increased in response to the flanker task and step execution time was shortened with a speed strategy compared to an accuracy strategy. Furthermore, in response to the visual interference of the flanker task, speed instructions in particular increased APA errors more than other instructions. It may be important to manipulate the level of the speed-accuracy trade-off to improve efficiency and safety. Further research is needed to explore the effects of advancing age and disability on choice step reaction in a speed or accuracy strategy.  相似文献

Two different sequential patterns have been reported in serial reaction-time (RT) tasks with random stimulus sequences, depending on the response-to-stimulus interval (RSI). When RSI is short a first-order repetition effect and a higher order benefit-only pattern are found, and when RSI is long a cost-benefit pattern is observed. In a series of three experiments, we found that the patterns are not unique for spatial dimensions, and that the benefit-only pattern does not appear for irrelevant stimulus features. The cost-benefit pattern, on the other hand, can shift to irrelevant locations, but not to irrelevant colour. Distributional analyses of the sequential effects demonstrate that the first-order repetition effect can be dissociated from the higher order effects. The results are interpreted as support for the role of response monitoring in the development of the benefit-only pattern at short RSI, while the first-order repetition effect is explained as repetition priming. With a long RSI, the cost-benefit pattern is confirmed as a low-level subjective expectancy process, which is primarily controlled by stimulus location. The data clearly strengthen the support for three different processes generating sequential effects in random serial RT tasks.  相似文献

In three experiments rats were conditioned with the sequence tone-light-food. In the first experiment the source of the light was a bulb located on the wall of the conditioning chamber. Serial conditioning resulted in subjects approaching the bulb during the tone, even though it was not illuminated. The strength of this activity was greater when the tone was intermittently rather than consistently followed by the light. For Experiments 2 and 3 the source of the light was placed in the food magazine, and this resulted in greater magazine activity during the tone when it was intermittently rather than consistently paired with the light. It is suggested that the level of orientation to the light during the tone is, in part, a reflection of the amount of attention paid to the tone. It is further suggested that the tone receives more attention when it is an inaccurate rather than accurate predictor of its consequences.  相似文献

Serial dependencies in interresponse times were studied by means of a digital computer. In monkeys exposed to a DRL 20-sec schedule of reinforcement, serial interactions appeared at all stages of training. Early in training the serial effects consisted of trains of relatively long interresponse times interspersed among trains of relatively short ones. Later on, the serial effects appeared to be characterized by a tendency to drift up and down in long wavelength periods around the minimum interval required for reinforcement. After training to a point at which most interresponse times produced reinforcement, serial effects of a still more subtle nature appeared. These effects were made apparent by autocorrelation and power spectrum methods and consisted of both long-term and extremely short-term fluctuations in interresponse times.  相似文献

In both discrimination learning and partial reinforcement, transitions may occur from nonrewarded to rewarded trials (NR transition). In discrimination learning, NR transitions may occur in two different stimulus alternatives (NR different transitions). In partial reward, NR transitions may occur in a single stimulus alternative (NR same transitions). Available instrumental learning data indicate that resistance to extinction is increased by both types of NR transitions following limited acquisition training. Following more extensive acquisition training, resistance to extinction appears to be increased by NR same transitions but not by NR different transitions. In Experiment 1, it was shown for the first time that following extensive acquisition training the effects of the two types of transitions are the same in the Pavlovian situation as in the instrumental situation. This finding indicates that on the current trial the rat remembered the conditioned stimulus (CS) and the unconditioned stimulus (US) from the prior trial and those memories along with the CS on the current trial become the signal for the current US. Experiments 2 and 3, which tested hypotheses about instrumental learning, identified why NR different transitions lose their capacity to promote vigorous responding following extensive acquisition training. This is because cues occurring on the rewarded trials of NR different transitions more validly signal reward than other situational cues and thus overshadow them. Finally, some implications of the present findings for understanding the role of NR different transitions in discrimination learning situations were discussed.  相似文献

An account of affective modulations in perceptual speed and accuracy (ASAP: Affecting Speed and Accuracy in Perception) is proposed and tested. This account assumes an emotion-induced inhibitory interaction between parallel channels in the visual system that modulates the onset latencies and response durations of visual signals. By trading off speed and accuracy between channels, this mechanism achieves (a) fast visuo-motor responding to course-grained information, and (b) accurate visuo-attentional selection of fine-grained information. ASAP gives a functional account of previously counterintuitive findings, and may be useful for explaining affective influences in both featural-level single-stimulus tasks and object-level multistimulus tasks.  相似文献
