Adult subjects were instructed to select either the wider physical or the wider perspective shape of two rotated rectangles. With equal differences between the physical and perspective widths, responses were governed by instructions and by the magnitude of the differences between widths of the forms. However, with unequal differences between physical and perspective widths of the two rectangles, responses were governed primarily by the magnitude of the differences. Regardless of instructions, responses were to the dimension with the greater difference between widths. The results suggest that performance in the shape constancy experiment is a function of relative dimensional discriminability, as defined by instructions, and relative differences of widths between forms presented for comparison.  相似文献

If an identification task with colour constancy as its objective is carried out under drastically changing illumination, do people rely mainly on colour information or do they rely on other sources of information? This question suggested two hypotheses for testing: (i) context hypothesis: people rely mainly on colour information (spectral reflectance or illumination chromaticity) to achieve colour constancy; (ii) representation hypothesis: people rely mainly on all other clues associated with colour to achieve colour constancy, including form information (any shape elements) and space information (spatial coordinates or spatial correlation). Experiment 1 showed that form information was readily associated with colour information to produce implicit representation. This gave the best colour-constancy performance (95.72%) and the fastest processing speed, so it probably used a top-down process. However, it was also prone to error owing to assumptions. Space information was not readily associated with colour information so colour-constancy performance was halved (48.73%) and processing time doubled. When the subject was deprived of both information sources and only given colour information, this resulted in the longest reaction times and the worst colour-constancy performance (41.38%). These results clearly support the representation hypothesis rather than the context hypothesis. When all three clues were available at the same time, the order of preference was: symbol, location, then colour. Experiment 2 showed that when form information was the main clue, colour-constancy performance was conceptually driven and processed more quickly; this supports the representation hypothesis. However, when form information was not used, colour constancy was data-driven, processed more slowly, and achieved an inferior identification rate overall; this supports the context hypothesis.  相似文献

When the illumination falling on a surface change, so does the reflected light. Despite this, adult observers are good at perceiving surfaces as relatively unchanging—an ability termed colour constancy. Very few studies have investigated colour constancy in infants, and even fewer in children. Here we asked whether there is a difference in colour constancy between children and adults; what the developmental trajectory is between six and 11 years; and whether the pattern of constancy across illuminations and reflectances differs between adults and children. To this end, we developed a novel, child-friendly computer-based object selection task. In this, observers saw a dragon's favourite sweet under a neutral illumination and picked the matching sweet from an array of eight seen under a different illumination (blue, yellow, red, or green). This set contained a reflectance match (colour constant; perfect performance) and a tristimulus match (colour inconstant). We ran two experiments, with two-dimensional scenes in one and three-dimensional renderings in the other. Twenty-six adults and 33 children took part in the first experiment; 26 adults and 40 children took part in the second. Children performed better than adults on this task, and their performance decreased with age in both experiments. We found differences across illuminations and sweets, but a similar pattern across both age groups. This unexpected finding might reflect a real decrease in colour constancy from childhood to adulthood, explained by developmental changes in the perceptual and cognitive mechanisms underpinning colour constancy, or differences in task strategies between children and adults.

Previous studies have established the existence of neurological impairments of object constancy: the ability to recognize that an object has the same structure across changes in its retinal projection. Five case studies of brain-damaged patients with deficits in achieving object constancy are reported. To test object constancy, patients discriminated two photographs of a target object, taken from different views, from a photograph of a visually similar distractor object. Four patients showed impaired matching only when the principal axis of the target object in one photograph was foreshortened. The fifth patient showed impaired matching only when the saliency of the target object's primary distinctive feature was reduced. This double dissociation suggests that normally there may be two independent means of achieving object constancy: one by processing an object's local distinctive features, the other by describing the object's structure relative to the frame of its principal axis. Neurological damage can selectively impair either process. Further, this impairment can be independent of deficits in processing visual form, since two patients with a selective deficit in the foreshortened matching task showed relatively normal form discrimination. The patient dependent on local distinctive feature information showed a deficit in size discrimination. It is suggested that this patient fails to utilize global properties of form. This failure may underlie both his impairment in achieving object constancy and in processing certain dimensions of form.  相似文献

34 male and 34 female hospitalized psychiatric patients were divided into field-independent and field-dependent groups on the basis of rod-and-frame test performance and their MMPI scores were compared. A multiple discriminant analysis followed by a series of 2 X 2 factorial analyses of variance was used to assess the results. As in previous studies, more similarities than differences were found between the two cognitive styles. However, field-independent subjects tended to be more unconventional, aggressive, antisocial, and perhaps defensive than field-dependent subjects. We tested shape constancy from novel views in the case of binocular viewing, using a variety of stimuli, including polyhedra, polygonal lines, and points in 3-D. The results of the psychophysical experiments show that constraints such as planarity of surface contours and symmetry are critical for reliable shape constancy. These results are consistent with the results obtained in our previous psychophysical experiments on shape constancy from novel views in the presence of a kinetic depth effect (Pizlo & Stevenson, 1999). On the basis of these results, we developed a new model of binocular shape reconstruction. The model is based on the assumption that binocular reconstruction is a difficult inverse problem, whose solution requires imposing a priori constraints on the family of possible interpretations. In the model, binocular disparity is used to correct monocularly reconstructed shape. The new model was tested on the same shapes as those used in the psychophysical experiments. The reconstructions produced by this model are substantially more reliable than the reconstructions produced by models that do not use constraints. Interestingly, monocular (but not binocular) reconstructions produced by this model correlate well with both monocular and binocular performance of human subjects. This fact suggests that binocular and monocular reconstructions of shapes in the human visual system involve similar mechanisms based on monocular shape constraints.  相似文献

In a previous study, Schouten and Blommaert (1995) explicitly showed that brightness constancy implies a substantial compression in the luminance-brightness mapping. Here it is argued that additional compression mechanisms are required for scenes with large luminance ranges. To trace these, a series of experiments was conducted which involved expansion of the luminance range. We used a simple spatial configuration consisting of a disk on a contourless homogeneous surround (Ganzfeld). The contrast between the disk and Ganzfeld acted as the independent variable, while the size of the disk was parametrically varied. Sequential dichoptical brightness matches with a reference were carried out for both the disk and the surround. The results reveal a compression mechanism which we termbrightness indention. This indention, which has not previously been reported in the literature, only occurs if the Ganzfeld is less luminous than the disk, and it takes the form of a brightness decrease of the immediate surroundings of the disk.  相似文献

In a series of studies, the authors established empirical support for a general decision-making bias that they termed a person sensitvity bias. Specifically, a person sensitivity bias consists of a person positivity bias (D. O. Sears, 1983) under positive performance conditions and a person negativity bias under negative performance conditions. The authors conducted the first empirical studies of a direct comparison between individuals and objects performing the same task under both positive and negative performance conditions. Two additional studies tested the boundaries of the sensitivity bias within negatively framed decision dilemmas. The results are discussed in terms of their relevance toward a more comprehensive theory of person-object evaluation differences.  相似文献

Space constancy (the perception that the world remains stable despite eye movements) might be mediated by receptive fields with constant locations in the world rather than constant locations on the retina. In a strong form the hypothesis, receptive fields of single neurons would compensate for all eye movements, whereas in a weak form they would compensate only for the small movements of fixation that occur without retargeting. Early receptive field mapping confounded world-centered and retina-centered organizations by fixing the retina relative to the world. This paper links the strong and weak forms of constancy by relating previously isolated data, and illustrates the issues with a previously unpublished figure showing that striate receptive field have constant retinal locations. The first tests of space constancy in striate cortex contradicted the strong hypothesis; recent tests contradict the weak hypothesis, also. The results are consistent with modern theories of space constancy, differentiating between motor-oriented and perceptual functions of vision, and differentiating between constancy during pursuit and constancy across saccades. A series of experiments investigating the constancy of perceived direction was conducted. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 indicated that the perception of direction, while close to constancy, exhibited a consistent departure from constancy of approximately 2.5 deg. Experiments 4 and 5 investigated the departure from constancy in terms of the information of the position of the eyes within the head and the information of the retinal area (local sign) being stimulated. The results of these experiments indicated that the departure from constancy was a function of the underestimation of the position of the eyes within the head.  相似文献

Existing evidence indicates that there are differences between children and adults in size constancy when observation distances are large. Findings are reported which suggest that this phenomenon is based on a difference in the accessing of proximal stimulus information, which, in the case of size, refers to visual angle subtended. Age differences were found when a traditional size constancy task was used, but these differences disappeared when all the comparison objects subtended the same visual angle. Since this finding demonstrates that young children can make accurate size matches, it is suggested that the underconstancy previously reported is not necessarily the result of children's inability to use fully certain cues to distance. Rather, the findings suggest that children access proximal stimulus information more spontaneously than do adults.  相似文献

Two widely used tests of gender constancy, one verbal and one perceptual, were given to 26 4-to-6-year-old children. Children were classified at different levels of gender constancy, depending on which test was used. These discrepant results were not accounted for by the differences in the way the tests presented (verbally or visually), nor by the tests' differing definitions of gender constancy. The majority of the children answered gender constancy questions as though they were referring to a “pretend,” as opposed to a “real,” situation; such responses decreased scores of gender constancy on both tests. The theoretical and methodological implications of children spontaneously adopting a pretend mode of responding are discussed.  相似文献

Relational reasoning is often considered more resource intensive than feature-based reasoning. This view implies that learning categories defined by relational regularities should be more difficult than learning categories defined by featural regularities. Unfortunately previous studies do not ground featural and relational information in a common perceptual substrate. After addressing this concern, a series of experiments compare learning performance for relation- and feature-based categories. Under certain circumstances we find faster learning for relation-based categories. The results suggest that mechanisms rooted in relational processes (e.g., relative stimulus judgement, analogical comparison) facilitate or hinder learning depending on whether the relational processes highlight or obscure the underlying category structure. Conversely, category learning affects relational processes by promoting relational comparisons that increase the coherence of acquired categories. In contrast to the largely independent research efforts in category learning and analogy research, our findings suggest that learning and comparison processes are deeply intertwined.  相似文献

The study examined effects of instructional sets (objective, phenomenal, projective, and retinal) on the judged sizes of blocks placed at various “distances” in a pictorial array. Magnitude estimations of size were consistent with previous studies of size constancy in three-dimensional arrays. Chronometric analyses indicated that reaction time increased with distal size, but was not affected by perceived distance. The results suggested that size was scaled relative to a perceptual unit. Instructions affected the nature of the scale unit (proximal vs. distal), but not the scaling process itself.  相似文献

The present study examined gender differences in ADHD through a meta-analysis. Effect size estimates for the primary symptoms and correlates of ADHD were calculated in an attempt to replicate and extend a previous meta-analysis on gender differences in the disorder. Relatively lenient inclusion criteria were used in order to maximize the number of studies included in the effect sizes. The results indicated that in comparison to ADHD boys, ADHD girls had lower ratings on hyperactivity, inattention, impulsivity, and externalizing problems. In addition, ADHD girls had greater intellectual impairments and more internalizing problems than ADHD boys. Overall, the results of the current meta-analysis indicated general agreement with the previous meta-analysis. The clinical implications of these gender differences and future research considerations are discussed.  相似文献

Cortical colour blindness is caused by brain damage to the ventro-medial occipital and temporal lobes. A possible explanation is that the pathway responsible for transmitting information about wavelength and its subsequent elaboration as colour has been destroyed at the cortical level. However, several signs of chromatic processing persist in an achromatopsic subject who, despite his inability to tell colours apart, can still detect chromatic borders, perceive shape from colour, and discriminate the direction in which a striped pattern moves when the determination of direction requires the viewer to 'know' which stripes have a particular colour. Perhaps only the information about wavelength that leads to conscious awareness of colour has been destroyed. It is unclear whether incomplete achromatopsia is merely a less severe form of the disorder or whether it is qualitatively different, perhaps reflecting impaired colour constancy. In monkeys, removing cortical area V4 impairs performance on colour constancy tasks but, invariably, impairs several other aspects of visual perception. If the lesion that causes total achromatopsia in human subjects corresponds to area V4 in monkeys, it is an unsolved puzzle that a totally achromatopsic subject paradoxically demonstrates certain characteristics of colour constancy, unless his residual performance reflects the much underrated retinal contribution to colour constancy.  相似文献

In a series of studies it was demonstrated that activating the self is sufficient to increase social comparison tendencies. Treating the relevant constructs as individual differences that can be measured as well as contextual variables that can be manipulated, the authors show that individual differences in self-activation are correlated with interest in social comparison information and that manipulations of self-activation cause changes in interest in social comparison. Self-certainty often has been portrayed as the primary determinant of social comparison interest. The present results suggest that self-activation affects interest in social comparison even when self-certainty is controlled.  相似文献

Three paired comparison type experiments, with 20 different Ss in each, using citric acid at three concentration levels as taste stimulus, investigated some effects of differences in stimulus liquid bulk on perceived relative taste intensity, and effects of concentration differences on perceived relative volume. Perceived relative taste intensity increases slightly with increasing liquid bulk and relative perceived bulk increases slightly with concentration, both effects being significant: p < .01. Abstract.— A model for perceptual analysis of the proximal stimulus into common and residual components, earlier described in a series of papers by Johansson and his co-workers for motion and space perception, is applied to colour perception. Though still premature, this application seems to make colour constancy a natural result of the analysis in the same way as size and form constancy is solved by Johansson's vector analysis in the frame of reference of projective geometry. Applications of the model to Land's Mondrian experiments, to simultaneous contrast, and to the Cornsweet-OBrien effect are outlined. The information from variations and invariances in reflected light (besides the geometrical projection) is discussed with reference to Gibson's ecological optics.  相似文献
