The licensing of psychologists is not generally a concern of counselors, counselor educators, or supervisors. However, with the enactment of new licensing laws such as the one described here, an issue is emerging that members of the counseling professions should not leave unattended. Through ignorance or complacency, we may contribute to the demise of the counseling professions as self-regulating groups. In this paper we present the results of a simulation study of credence developments in groups of communicating Bayesian agents, as they update their beliefs about a given proposition p. Based on the empirical literature, one would assume that these groups of rational agents would converge on a view over time, or at least that they would not polarize. This paper presents and discusses surprising evidence that this is not true. Our simulation study shows that these groups of Bayesian agents show group polarization behavior under a broad range of circumstances. This is, we think, an unexpected result, that raises deeper questions about whether the kind of polarization in question is irrational. If one accepts Bayesian agency as the hallmark of epistemic rationality, then one should infer that the polarization we find is also rational. On the other hand, if we are inclined to think that there is something epistemically irrational about group polarization, then something must be off in the model employed in our simulation study. We discuss several possible interfering factors, including how epistemic trust is defined in the model. Ultimately, we propose that the notion of Bayesian agency is missing something in general, namely the ability to respond to higher-order evidence.

This study examined couples' informal helping interactions, that is, how partners helped each other with their psychological problems. Fifty-three couples participated in a communication sampling task in which they took each of two roles, discloser and helper (analogous to client and therapist). Audiotapes of the interactions were subsequently categorized according to helper response modes and rated on global measures of problem solving, understanding, and supportiveness. The most frequent helper response modes were question, advisement, and interpretation; reflection was infrequently used. There were no differences in helping communication associated with gender or sex-role self-concept. The important characteristic of the helpers' communication was not the type of response used, but the evaluative quality of the response. Helpers who were more satisfied with their relationships tended to be more understanding and supportive. Also, interactions rated as more understanding and supportive tended to be experienced as more helpful by the disclosers.  相似文献

Using a mock injury involving arterial bleeding, we explored the impact of variables on two different decisions in the decision-making process leading to help. Expertise (Red Cross Training), ambiguity, and number of bystanders were manipulated in a 2 X 2 X 2 design. We observed the following responses: (a) nonhelp, (b) ineffective direct help, (c) indirect help, and (d) direct help. The decision to help or not was affected by ambiguity, sex, and the presence or absence of other bystanders. Greater ambiguity led to less help; women helped less than men; and fewer people helped when other bystanders were present. Expertise affected the decision leading to the type of help used but not the decision to help. Although training did not raise the intervention rate, it did dramatically change the effectiveness of the help used and could yield as many as 28 more saved lives out of 80 such incidents. The number of bystanders affected both the decision to help and the type of help used. Ineffective direct help occurred most frequently when the bystander was alone. The presence of other bystanders also affected the type of indirect help that was used.  相似文献

The Journal of Psychology in Africa (JPA) is a peer-reviewed journal co-published NISC (Pty) Ltd and Informa UK Limited (trading as Taylor & Francis Group) on behalf of Africa Scholarship Development Enterprize. It is accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training in South Africa and indexed in the ISI Web of Science. The JPA provides an inter-disciplinary forum for the dissemination of psychological research in Africa and related regions in the context of development. Its core mission is to advance psychological research for the social-cultural and health development in Africanist settings, inclusive of the African diaspora communities around the globe. Research that addresses African heritage realities and opportunities is particularly encouraged. Contributions should attempt a synthesis of local and universal methodologies and applications, contributing to the wider body of knowledge in the applied psychological sciences.  相似文献

This issue of Motivation and Emotion is devoted to research and theory on intrinsic motivation. Individuals who were instrumental in defining the initial issues in this area of research were invited to submit papers. Initially, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation were conceived as a dichotomy, although now many researchers no longer hold to this notion. This point of view is summarized in the first article by Rigby, Deci, Patrick, and Ryan. Lepper and Cordova, on the other hand, pursue the question of what makes learning “fun.” Harter and Jackson also question the dichotomy of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, suggesting instead that sometimes motivational orientation is a trait, and other times it is situation-specific. Heyman and Dweck take a “goals approach” to the question of motivation in the schools, contrasting learning goals with performance goals. Sansone and Morgan argue that the sources of motivation are not static but can change across individuals, activities, surrounding context, and time. Boggiano and her colleagues, in the final article, present a diathesis-stress model to account for students' divergent achievement patterns. In all, these articles address the question of whether an intrinsic motivational orientation can be implemented in the schools, and if so how and where will it be effective?  相似文献

A special issue of the American Psychologist (January 2007) was devoted to leadership. The six articles, by W. Bennis; S. J. Zaccaro; V. H. Vroom and A. G. Yago; B. J. Avolio; R. J. Sternberg; and R. J. Hackman and R. Wageman, were written from an "industrial" perspective that places primary emphasis on positional leaders and their actions. Some readers of this series might conclude that the industrial model best explains leadership. It does not. The ecological perspective offers an alternative that deserves consideration. It is time to end the dominance of the industrial perspective.  相似文献
