The author has surveyed a quarter of the accredited undergraduate computer science programs in the United States. More than
half of these programs offer a “social and ethical implications of computing” course taught by a computer science faculty
member, and there appears to be a trend toward teaching ethics classes within computer science departments. Although the decision
to create an “in house” computer ethics course may sometimes be a pragmatic response to pressure from the accreditation agency,
this paper argues that teaching ethics within a computer science department can provide students and faculty members with
numerous benefits. The paper lists topics that can be covered in a computer ethics course and offers some practical suggestions
for making the course successful.
An earlier version of this paper was presented at the 2005 conference, Ethics and Social Responsibility in Engineering and Technology, Linking Workplace Ethics and Education, co-hosted by Gonzaga University and Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California, 9–10 June 2005. 相似文献

In this essay, we demonstrate that the field of computer ethics shares many core similarities with two other areas of applied
ethics, Academicians writing and teaching in the area of computer ethics, along with practitioners, must address ethical issues
that are qualitatively similar in nature to those raised in medicine and business. In addition, as academic disciplines, these
three fields also share some similar concerns. For example, all face the difficult challenge of maintaining a credible dialogue
with diverse constituents such as academicians of various disciplines, professionals, policymakers, and the general public,
Given these similarities, the fields of bioethics and business ethics can serve as useful models for the development of computer
ethics.
A version of this paper was presented at ETHICOMP98, the Fourth International Conference on Ethical Issues of Information
Technology, March 25–27, 1998, Erasmus University, the Netherlands.

Business ethics and computer ethics: The view from Poland 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

An Aristotelian approach to understanding and teaching business ethics is presented and defended. The newly emerging field
of computer ethics is also defined in an Aristotelian fashion, and an argument is made that this new field should be called
“information ethics”. It is argued that values have their roots in the life and practices of a community; therefore, morality
cannot be taught by training for a special way of reasoning. Transmission of values and norms occurs through socialization
— the process by which an individual absorbs not only values but also the whole way of life of his or her community. It follows
that business ethics and information ethics can be considered kinds of socialization into a profession: role learning and
acquiring a new self-identification. This way of understanding fields of applied ethics is especially important for their
proper development in Central-Eastern Europe because of endemic factors which are the result of recent political developments
there. 相似文献

The computer revolution and the problem of global ethics 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7

The author agrees with James Moor that computer technology, because it is ‘logically malleable’, is bringing about a genuine
social revolution. Moor compares the computer revolution to the ‘industrial revolution’ of the late 18th and the 19th centuries;
but it is argued here that a better comparison is with the ‘printing press revolution’ that occurred two centuries before
that. Just as the major ethical theories of Bentham and Kant were developed in response to the printing press revolution,
so a new ethical theory is likely to emerge from computer ethics in response to the computer revolution. The newly emerging
field of information ethics, therefore, is much more important than even its founders and advocates believe. 相似文献

Several context-specific social and political factors in Eastern and Central Europe are described — factors that must be considered
while developing strategies to introduce Computer Ethics. Poland is used as a primary example. GNP per capita, the cost of
hardware and software, uneven and scant distribution of computing resources, and attitudes toward work and authority are discussed.
Such “geographical factors” must be taken into account as the new field of Computer Ethics develops. 相似文献

At a conference, two engineering professors and a philosophy professor discussed the teaching of ethics in engineering and
computer science. The panelists considered the integration of material on ethics into technical courses, the role of ethical
theory in teaching applied ethics, the relationship between cases and codes of ethics, the enlisting of support of engineering
faculty, the background needed to teach ethics, and the assessment of student outcomes. Several audience members contributed
comments, particularly on teaching ethical theory and on student assessment.
This panel discussion took place at a mini-conference, Practicing and Teaching Ethics in Engineering and Computing, held during the Sixth Annual Meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, Washington, D.C., March 8–9,
1997.
Biographical information on panelists:
Charles Glagola is an assistant professor of civil engineering at the University of Florida. He is a registered professional engineer in
the states of Florida and Alabama. Before coming to academia, he had extensive industry experience culminating with his owning
and operating a construction and engineering firm in Pensacola, Florida. He currently teaches engineering ethics as part of
a professional issues course in the Department of Civil Engineering, and a one-hour engineering ethics course that is offered
to all engineering students through the College of Engineering.
Moshe Kam is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Drexel University. He heads Drexel’s Data Fusion Laboratory which
specializes in multisensor systems and robot navigation. His professional interests include detection and estimation, distributed
decision making, forensic applications of image processing, and engineering ethics.
Michael Loui is professor of electrical and computer engineering and associate dean of the Graduate College at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. From 1990 to 1991, he served at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. His scholarly interests
include computational complexity theory, theory of parallel and distributed computation, fault-tolerant software, and professional
ethics.
Caroline Whitbeck is a philosopher of science, technology and medicine and is the Elmer G. Beamer-Hubert H. Shneider Professor in Ethics at
Case-Western Reserve University. She also directs the WWW Ethics Center for Engineering & Science— http://ethics.cwru.edu—
under a grant from the National Science Foundation. The focus of her current work is practical ethics, especially ethics in
scholarly and scientific research. Her book, Ethics in Engineering Practice and Research, will appear from Cambridge University Press in winter 1997–98. 相似文献

In an article in Mind (Vol. 73, No. 291, July 1964) I tried to show that there is a fundamental difference between primary and secondary qualities. The present analysis of perceived size of an object and its relation to the size of the ‘objective’ and the ‘real’ object reveals that my thesis 1 regarding visual primary qualities, viz. size and shape, while true so far as shape is concerned, has to be modified in regard to size. After having criticized the usual view of size constancy, I show by means of a diagram how we may determine the location in physical space of a percept of an object. This diagram reveals at the same time how perceived size decreases gradually with increasing distance of the object from the percipient, but at a much smaller rate than the retinal image of the object. By means of the diagram I show furthermore how the perceived size may in theory vary from person to person. In conclusion a modification of my thesis 1 is suggested. 相似文献

The national population of persons who graduated from doctoral programs in counselor preparation during 1984–1985 was surveyed to discern their demographic, work history, current job status, productivity, and future employment plans. The 270 responses revealed a high level of preparation-related employment, with work being performed in very diverse settings. Today's graduates are older than those who graduated 15 years ago and are relatively experienced in counseling and human development services. Private practice has emerged as a significant employment setting and is projected to increase even more. Productivity in terms of contributions to the profession is substantial. Conclusions and implications are drawn for practitioners and counselor preparation institutions. 相似文献

The present study explored different approaches for automatically scoring student essays that were written on the basis of multiple texts. Specifically, these approaches were developed to classify whether or not important elements of the texts were present in the essays. The first was a simple pattern-matching approach called "multi-word" that allowed for flexible matching of words and phrases in the sentences. The second technique was latent semantic analysis (LSA), which was used to compare student sentences to original source sentences using its high-dimensional vector-based representation. Finally, the third was a machine-learning technique, support vector machines, which learned a classification scheme from the corpus. The results of the study suggested that the LSA-based system was superior for detecting the presence of explicit content from the texts, but the multi-word pattern-matching approach was better for detecting inferences outside or across texts. These results suggest that the best approach for analyzing essays of this nature should draw upon multiple natural language processing approaches. 相似文献

The authors surveyed the research training practices of doctoral-level, APA-approved counseling psychology programs, non-APA-approved counseling psychology programs, and counselor education programs to identify ways to improve such training. Some differences were found according to program type. No differences were found in percentage of students' publishing or presenting research during 1983–84. Suggestions for improving future research training were assessed; highest ratings were given to required participation in research teams; 1st-year, “hands-on” research experience; and greater emphasis on design rather than statistics training. Programs characterized by high and low student research productivity differed in the areas of required research training, research emphases and research climate, required presentation or submission of research for publication, and material support for student research. The implications of these findings are discussed. 相似文献
