According to the prevailing sentiment, changing the past is logically impossible. The prevailing sentiment is wrong. In this paper, I argue that the claim that changing the past entails a contradiction ultimately rests upon an empirical assumption, and so the conclusion that changing the past is logically impossible is to be resisted. I then present and discuss a model of time which drops the empirical assumption and coherently models changing the past. Finally, I defend the model, and changing the past, against objections. 相似文献

In this paper I seek to defend libertarianism about free will and moral responsibility against two well-known arguments: the
luck argument and the Mind argument. Both of these arguments purport to show that indeterminism is incompatible with the degree of control necessary
for free will and moral responsibility. I begin the discussion by elaborating these arguments, clarifying important features
of my preferred version of libertarianism—features that will be central to an adequate response to the arguments—and showing
why a strategy of reconciliation (often referred to as “deliberative libertarianism”) will not work. I then consider four
formulations of the luck argument and find them all wanting. This discussion will place us in a favorable position to understand

Contrafreeloading, which means that animals work for food even though identical food is freely available, has been reported
in animals’ feeding behavior. This phenomenon has been assumed to be explained by the information primacy model, in which
the information about a food resource as well as the food itself is valuable for animals. This study confirmed a contrafreeloading-like
phenomenon using movies as rewards rather than food in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) and investigated the motivational system that exists behind contrafreeloading. In the experiment, movies that were presented
dependently on subjects’ responses (earned movies) and movies that were presented automatically (free movies) were supplied
simultaneously. The subjects continued to make responses to obtain the presentation of the earned movies although identical
movies were available as free movies. These results provide the first evidence of contrafreeloading that occurs with movie
rewards. The motivation maintaining the contrafreeloading behavior for movies may be control over the environment according

Zurif and Piñango (1999) claimed that they excluded the four agrammatic patients reported by Druks and Marshall (1991) from their review article because two of the patients were nonnative speakers of Hebrew and because the Hebrew sentences we used in our investigations were ungrammatical. In Druks and Marshall (1991) we have shown that the presence or the absence of a trace in two types of Hebrew passives had no effect on the patients' performance. Two patients, without comprehension deficits, performed equally well on both types of passives and two patients, with comprehension deficits, were equally impaired on both types. We remind Zurif and Piñango of our previous response to the claims of ungrammaticality of our materials (Druks & Marshall, 1992) and argue that there were no justifiable reasons for excluding these cases from the review. We also comment on Zurif and Piñango's (1999) and Grodzinsky's (2000) new proposal that the association of agrammatic comprehension should be with Broca's aphasia and not with agrammatism. 相似文献

This essay examines a challenge to common literary representations of female mental illness in the Early Modern period—the hysterical woman—in a collection of French short stories contemporary to Vesalius's De Fabrica: Jeanne Flore's Tales and Trials of Love (1542). Jeanne Flore's tales depict several mentally disturbed female protagonists, young women prone to paroxysms of madness and self-mutilation. This study maintains that while Tales and Trials of Love superficially participates in the literary tradition that grew out of those accepted social and medical beliefs, it also questions the long-accepted paradigm of female hysteria and points to a shift in the socio-medical climate. Jeanne Flore's fictional narratives suggest that mental illness no longer consists in the realignment of a uterine imbalance, but rather in the telling of personal stories, a precursor to psychoanalysis and narrative medicine. 相似文献
