Three studies were done to determine the effects of a brief 2-h sexual experience on the maintenance of sexual behavior in male rats; the effects on the experience-based maintenance of sexual behavior of gonadal hormones (study 1), a protein-synthesis inhibitor (study 2), and an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor blocker (study 3) were determined. Naive male rats were provided with a 2-h sexual experience with sexually receptive hormonally "primed" females or they received no experience. In the first study animals under each of these conditions then underwent castration or sham surgery. In the second study animals under each of the experience conditions received either cycloheximide (CYX) or saline (SAL; 1.5 or 3.0 mg/kg CYX or SAL sc, 10 min after the experience). In study 3 experienced and inexperienced animals received either 0.07 or 0.10 mg/kg MK-801 ip (15 min before the experience). In all studies animals were tested for sexual behavior 3, 6, and 9 days after surgery or injection. These studies showed that the most consistent effect of a 2-h sexual experience was to facilitate the initiation of mounting, especially on the first test; they show, further, that most experience effects were reduced or eliminated if animals were castrated between experience and test, if they received a drug (CYX) at the time of the experience that blocks the synthesis of proteins, or if they received an NMDA receptor antagonist prior to the experience.  相似文献

While the onset of maternal behavior at parturition is mediated by hormones, the maintenance of maternal behavior during the first few postpartum weeks depends on experiences acquired while the dam interacts with pups (Rosenblatt, 1990). In fact, if female rats are permitted as little as 2 h or maternal experience within 36 h after Cesarean delivery, they exhibit heightened maternal behavior during maternal induction tests 10 days later; in contrast, dams separated from young at the time of Cesarean delivery and not permitted a maternal experience fail to respond maternally in tests 10 days later (Orpen & Fleming, 1987). In this study we investigated the role of chemosensory input through the vomeronasal and main olfactory systems in this maternal experience effect. Six groups of primiparous females were tested for maternal behavior to foster pups presented 9-10 days after Cesarean delivery: three groups were permitted to interact with pups for a 2-h period 36 h after Cesarean delivery; and three groups were separated from pups until testing and were given no maternal experience. Within each experience condition, one group sustained bilateral section of the vomeronasal nerves, one sustained bilateral coronal cuts through the midsection of the main olfactory bulbs, and one group sustained small medial olfactory bulb cuts. The results showed that animals sustaining vomeronasal or olfactory transections, regardless of experience condition, exhibited significantly reduced latencies to maternal behavior in maternal induction tests. However, these chemosensory disruptions did not prevent an additional facilitation of maternal behavior produced by a prior maternal experience.  相似文献

A previous study showed that intranasal zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) treatment shortens the latencies for the onset of maternal behavior in nonpregnant rats. The aim of this study was to see whether after recovery from the effects of ZnSO4 treatment, the latencies for maternal behavior increased. In Experiment 1 nonpregnant females were intranasally infused with ZnSO4 or air or were left untreated and exposed to pups starting 48 hr later. Olfactory discrimination tests using chocolate bits were done simultaneously. The ZnSO4 treatment resulted in short latency maternal behavior (1.1 days) compared with latencies of control females (3.8 days), but neither group showed any loss of olfactory discrimination. Three weeks later- ZnSO4-treated females showed increased latencies for all but retrieving, while control groups showed decreased latencies for all maternal behaviors. In Experiment 2, intranasal ZnSO4- and air-treated females were given olfactory discrimination tests under food deprivation, using chocolate bits and guinea pigs pellets. Choice of guinea pig pellets was more severely affected than choice of chocolate bits, but recovery of the discriminations was complete in 4-5 days. The effects of ZnSO4 on maternal behavior and on olfactory discrimination in nonpregnant females were discussed.  相似文献

Changes in maternal responsiveness during late pregnancy were traced by exposing females to foster pups (15-30-min tests) under conditions favoring the rapid initiation of maternal behavior. Groups were tested when nonpregnant or on Days 17, 20, 21, or 22 of pregnancy (Day 22 = parturition). Nulliparous females were compared with primiparous and with "experienced breeders." Nest defense was observed by introducing unfamiliar males (2-min tests) on Day 22. Results focused attention on three periods: (a) Days 17-20, when maternal responsiveness was lower than in the nonpregnant condition, (b) Day 21, when maternal responsiveness returned to or rose above nonpregnant levels, and (c) on Day 22, the 3.5 hr prior to delivery, during which 90% of females almost immediately retrieved, gathered, and tended foster pups and during which 92% attacked the unfamiliar intruders. (Attacks were rare earlier.) Maternally experienced females were more responsive to pups than nulliparous females when nonpregnant and throughout late pregnancy, but both groups were equally likely to show prepartum aggression.  相似文献

Two large groups of inexperienced subjects (n = 208 and n = 50) and a small group of experienced subjects (n = 5) were tested using time-till-breakdown as a measure of long-range apparent motion across a range of temporal frequencies. One group of inexperienced subjects was retested after one week and demonstrated quite stable patterns of response. Large intersubject variability was observed in terms of the amount of motion seen, with most inexperienced subjects reporting very little apparent motion. A raster display produced a peak frequency 1 Hz higher than a standard tachistoscope display. The role of experience was also examined with a small group of inexperienced subjects (n = 8) tested once daily over five consecutive days. There was high intersubject variability and intrasubject consistency, demonstrating little influence of learning and experience. The results are discussed in terms of current ideas on the breakdown effect.  相似文献

Hysterectomies were performed between the 10th and 19th day of pregnancy, and females were tested with pups for the onset of maternal behavior starting 0,24, 48, or 72 hr after surgery. Pups remained with the females overnight, and testing was repeated daily with fresh pups until females exhibited maternal behavior. Latencies for the onset of maternal behavior were shorter after hysterectomy on the 10th and 16th days of pregnancy than in intact pregnant females at the same stages of pregnancy; latencies became shorter, the later the termination of pregnancy. When the ovaries were removed along with hysterectomy during pregnancy, short-latency maternal behavior no longer was exhibited. Pregnant females were tested during the last 40 hr of pregnancy: nest building began at 34 hr prepartum and retrieving at 28 hr prepartum. The effect of hysterectomy during pregnancy on ovarian secretion of estrogen and progesterone is reviewed, and it is concluded that the rise in estrogen secretion, which follows hysterectomy during pregnancy, is most likely the cause of the rapid onset of maternal behavior after hysterectomy. A similar proposal is made for the prepartum onset of maternal behavior in intact pregnant females.  相似文献

This study examined the relationship between dynamic visual acuity and coincidence-anticipation timing in 16 inexperienced and 16 experienced women's fast pitch softball players. Pearson-product correlations indicated a low relationship between dynamic visual acuity and coincidence-anticipation timing. The correlations for dynamic visual acuity and coincidence anticipation between experienced and inexperienced dynamic visual acuity were not significant. A significant difference was found between the mean dynamic visual acuity of the two groups, i.e., experienced players had better dynamic visual acuity than inexperienced players. Analysis of variance of constant errors, variable errors, and absolute errors of coincidence anticipation indicated no significant differences between groups or across the three accuracy scores. The interaction between experience and accuracy was not significant.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to identify species-specific sign stimuli sufficient to elicit copulatory behavior in male Japanese quail and to determine how learning is involved in the control of behavior by these sign stimuli. In Experiment 1, sexually experienced subjects were tested for copulatory behavior with a live female quail and with a model consisting of a female quail's head and neck mounted in front of a foam pad. Comparable levels of copulatory behavior were observed in the two tests, indicating that static visual cues provided by a female quail's head and neck are sufficient to elicit copulatory behavior in this species. Experiment 2 showed that male birds that previously received numerous opportunities to copulate with a live female quail in the test situation were significantly more likely to copulate with the head + neck model than were sexually inexperienced subjects. Experiment 3 showed that prior sexual experience with live quail facilitated responding to the head + neck model only if the sexual experience was provided in the same place where subjects were later tested with the model. This last finding suggests that sexual experience facilitates control of copulatory behavior by species-specific sign stimuli through contextual conditioning. Contextual conditioning may lower the threshold for sexual behavior with the result that a stimulus as impoverished as an immobile model containing only the head and neck of a female quail becomes sufficient to elicit normal levels of copulatory behavior. The results are also discussed as an example of conditioned stimulus facilitation of responding to an unconditioned stimulus.  相似文献

The relation of legs, arms, shoulders, and grip strength with underhand pitching speed of experienced and inexperienced female pitchers was investigated. For 16 experienced female underhand pitchers and 16 inexperienced women with no softball experience (control group) leg and arm strength were measured using a Hydrafitness exercise machine. Grip strength was measured with a handgrip dynamometer. Underhand throwing speed was measured with a radar gun. Regression analysis showed arm and grip strength correlated with throwing speed (p < or = .05) for the experienced group. For the inexperienced control group, the only correlate of throwing speed was arm strength (p < or = .05). There was a significant difference between the two groups on all measures of strength and ball speed in favor of the experienced group (p < or = .05).  相似文献

The effects of preexposure and gonadal hormone manipulation on the extinction of a conditioned taste aversion were investigated. In Experiment 1, male rats were given one prior exposure to sucrose at some selected time (Days 4, 2, or 1) before a second exposure (Day 0) to sucrose and an LiCl injection. Controls received no prior exposure to sucrose but experienced only the sucrose + LiCl condition (Day 0). under the single exposure condition (Day 0) castrated animals extinguished the aversion faster than either testosterone-treated castrated rats or sham-operated rats. Sham-operated and castrated rats that had received preexposure treatment (Days 4, 2, or 1) were not distinguishable on a within-groups comparison of behavior but differed from their respective controls by exhibiting faster rates of extinction. However, in the testosterone-treated group only the Day 4 preexposure group exhibited a faster extinction rate. In Experiment 2, estradiol, dihydrotestosterone, and testosterone were studied by using only a Day 1 preexposure condition. The testosterone-treated group maintained the aversion for the longest period of time, followed by dihydrotestosterone-treated, sham, castrated, and estradiol-treated groups. It appears that estradiol augments the castration effect whereas dihydrotestosterone attenuates the effect. In Experiment 3, estradiol was administered alone or in combination with two different doses of dihydrotestosterone, and a Day 1 preexposure condition was used. The findings indicate that the outcome of behavior is dependent on the ratio of estradiol to dihydrotestosterone, with variations in this ratio resulting in fast (estrogen effect) to slow (androgen effect) rates of extinction.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the respective roles of the main and accessory olfactory systems in the development of maternal behavior in the primiparous Wistar rat. Females underwent one of the following treatments: vomeronasal nerve section (VN), irrigation of nasal cavities with 5% ZnSO4 solution (ZN), surgical control, saline irrigation control, and normal control. Surgical or first irrigation were done before mating occurred. Irrigations were done every 7 days thereafter. The dams and their litters were observed from the day the litter was born (Day 1) through Day 16. Pup weights and temperatures were recorded daily. Home cages were checked daily for changes in nest location and number of times pups were found out of the nest. Retrieving tests were conducted on Days 4, 7, 10, and 13. The following behavioral items were observed: number of pup retrievals , number of times mother nosed or licked pups, percentage of litter returned to nest by end of test, dam self-grooming, dam climbing or rising, and dam digging or burrowing in shavings. The VN dams and their litters were not significantly different from the control dams and their litters on any of the measures taken. The ZN dams and their litters were not significantly different from their controls on all measures except for pup body temperature which was slightly lower from Day 13 through day 16 and pup body weight which was slightly lower from Day 12 through Day 16. Since these differences are very small, they do not seem to indicate a serious deficiency in maternal behavior. The results indicate that adequate maternal behavior develops with either of the two systems intact.  相似文献

The present studies examined the effects of basolateral amygdala (BLA) lesions induced prior to or after context-footshock training on 48-h memory, using several retention measures. In experiment 1, male Sprague-Dawley rats with bilateral BLA lesions (NMDA, 12.5 mg/mL, 0.2 μL) were given footshock training in one compartment of a two-compartment alley. Rats were habituated to the alley and 24 h later were given two footshocks in the shock compartment. Retention was tested 48 h later, using latency to enter the shock compartment and time spent freezing as measures of memory. Two days later, they were tested again and received a footshock on each re-entry of the shock compartment prior to remaining in the safe compartment for 200 consecutive seconds. The BLA lesions did not block retention as assessed by freezing or number of re-entries of the shock compartment. In experiment 2, no prior habituation was given, and only one footshock was used for the training. BLA lesions did not block retention, as indicated by latencies to enter the shock compartment on a 48-h test or by number of entries of the shock compartment. Experiment 3 examined the effects of the GABAA agonist muscimol infused into the BLA prior to the 48-h retention test. The muscimol infusions decreased retention test entrance latencies but did not block retention as assessed by the number of subsequent entries of the shock compartment. These findings provide additional evidence that an intact BLA is not required for the acquisition or retention of context-footshock training.  相似文献

Groups of mice were briefly exposed to a one-octave band of noise at 14, 18, 28, 38, or 58 days of age. Five days later the groups were divided, and some mice were behaviorally tested for audiogenic seizures by reexposing them to the same sound. The round window cochlear microphonic potential was measured in the remaining animals and compared with that observed in unprimed control subjects. Seizure behavior occurred in all animals primed on Day 18 but rarely for subjects in the other age groups. Cochlear microphonic threshold curves in mice primed on Day 18 showed a 30-dB loss in sensitivity, while all other primed groups showed little change. These data were discussed in terms of the "disuse-supersensitivity" hypothesis previously proposed to account for the physiological effects of priming in mice.  相似文献

We assessed whether exposure to amodal properties in bimodal stimulation (e.g. rhythm, rate, duration) could educate attention to amodal properties in subsequent unimodal stimulation during prenatal development. Bobwhite quail embryos were exposed to an individual bobwhite maternal call under several experimental and control conditions during the day prior to hatching. Experimental groups received redundant auditory and visual exposure to the temporal features of an individual maternal call followed by unimodal auditory exposure to the same call immediately or after a 2-hr or 4-hr delay. Control groups received (1) the same exposure but in the reverse sequence (unimodal --> redundant bimodal), (2) asynchronous bimodal --> unimodal, (3) only unimodal exposure, or (4) only bimodal exposure. All experimental groups showed a significant preference for the familiar maternal call over a novel maternal call when tested 2 days after hatching, whereas none of the control groups showed a significant preference for the familiar call. These results indicate that intersensory redundancy can direct attention to amodal properties in bimodal stimulation and educate attention to the same amodal properties in subsequent unimodal stimulation where no intersensory redundancy is available.  相似文献

Maternal aggression in a Sprague-Dawley strain of laboratory rat (Charles River CD) was explored from Day 1 after mating on Day 0 through Day 24 of lactation (L0-L24). Aggression toward unfamiliar male “intruders” during 10-min tests was low among nonpregnant, nonlactating females and during the first 10 days of gestation. Frequency of attack on intruders increased moderately but significantly by Gestation Day 16 (G16; Experiment 1) or G21 (Experiment 2), a prepartum phenomenon not previously reported in laboratory rats. Levels of aggression were highest, however, during the first 9 days of lactation, when attacks averaged more than 6 per 10-min session. Attacks declined sharply in frequency after L14 and by L24 did not exceed levels observed among nonpregnant females. Experiment 3 examined the importance of the test site (home cage with nest and pups, if any, vs unfamiliar cage without nest or pups) to agonistic behavior associated with pregnancy and lactation. Late pregnant females tested in a novel cage were not aggressive; however, females tested shortly after delivering their pups were highly aggressive, averaging over four attacks per 5-min session. In novel cage tests frequency of attack remained high through L4 but declined significantly by L7. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that maternal aggression at its onset is primarily under hormonal control, but becomes increasingly dependent upon external factors, presumably pup stimulation, during the postpartum period.  相似文献

Four groups of nine Ss were run in a straight alley shock situation for 240 trials, 30 per day. Ss received either 180- or 300-V shock and interval intervals (ITI) of 30 or 120 sec. On Day 1 of training, the 300-V groups first started faster than the 180-V groups, but then showed considerable adaptation, resulting in approximately equal performance at the end of Day 1. Over all 8 days, the 180-V group started significantly faster than the 300-V group when a 30-sec ITI was used, but the converse when a 120-sec ITI was used. Over all 8 days, the 300-V groups continued to increase in performance, while the 180-V groups showed a decline after Day 4.  相似文献

On six occasions spaced at least a week apart, two groups of rats were subjected to a variety of stressful conditions consisting of a restraint/bright light complex, either alone or in combination with a tail pinch, whole-body inversion, or partial immersion in cold water. One of these groups was injected with diazepam (2.0 mg/kg) 30 min prior to the stressors, while the other group experienced the drug in their home cages the following day. A third group also received the diazepam but was not exposed to the stressors. In three test sessions all animals were injected with either diazepam or saline and were then exposed to a novel stressor: a plus-maze used as a screening device for anxiolytic drugs. This was immediately followed by a tail-flick measure of analgesia. The longest tail-flick latencies, indicating stress-induced analgesia ("autoanalgesia"), were observed in the group that had not been exposed to stress prior to testing. The other two groups exhibited substantially shorter latencies but did not differ from one another, thus showing a "stress inoculation" effect that was uninfluenced by diazepam. In the plus-maze, diazepam tends to increase the amount of time rats will spend in the two exposed arms of the maze relative to the two enclosed arms. This effect was significantly attenuated in the group that had previously experienced the variety of stressors after a diazepam injection, suggesting a learned association between drug and stress that resulted in a diminution of the drug's anxiolytic property.

Two studies demonstrated that subjective expected utility (SEU) theory predicted interest in, but not adherence to, a weightlifting exercise program. The studies also showed that attitudes were related to adherence for certain individuals. Specifically, attitudes toward not weightlifting were related to the number of days experienced subjects weightlifted. In addition, in Study 1, experienced subjects had more positive attitudes toward weightlifting and more negative attitudes toward not weightlifting than did inexperienced subjects, and the two groups differed on a number of underlying beliefs. Similarly, in Study 2, experienced subjects had more positive attitudes toward weightlifting and differed from inexperienced subjects on a number of underlying beliefs. These results are discussed in terms of their implications for several issues: the usefulness of SEU theory in the exercise domain; the importance of considering attitudes toward alternative courses of action (including inaction) when attempting to predict exercis–or any other–behavior; the need to distinguish between exercise adoption (initiation) and maintenance (adherence); and the importance of Beach's (1982, 1985) distinction between deasion making and decision implementation.  相似文献

This work was designed to study changes in neonatal behavior during the first two days of life. Infants in Part I were from middle-class backgrounds. Half of these infants had unrestricted maternal contact during the first two days of life, the other half had contact with their mothers only at feeding time. Infants in Part II were from low socio-economic backgrounds. They were cared for entirely by the nursery staff during the first two days of life, so that differences in maternal style did not affect their behavior. Half of these babies were born to mothers who received 50 mg meperidine during labor, half to mothers who received no meperidine. This work provided evidence for the sensitivity of the neonate during the first two days of life. Both those infants who received unrestricted maternal contact and those whose mothers had received no obstetrical drugs exhibited more behavioral change than those who received low maternal contact or whose mothers had received meperidine during labor. High maternal contact and absence of obstetrical drugs also resulted in increased sensitivity to some environmental stimuli.  相似文献
