This article is a personal reflection by an investigator with over 25 years of funding from the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). The article: (1) highlights research opportunities for psychologists at the NIH outside of the traditional mental health
arena; (2) provides specific recommendations to individual investigators to enhance their likelihood of obtaining NIH funding;
(3) specifies needed changes in psychology’s research education and training programs to prepare the next generation of psychologists
for research success; and (4) asks the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers to play a lead role in both
research training and advocacy.
This article is based on a presentation given at the 3rd national conference of the Association of Psychologists in Academic

This article relates the history, roles, and responsibilities of psychologists in academic health centers to the ultimate survival and success of professional psychology. It describes implications of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) on the institutional practice of psychology including how psychology??s place in academic health centers positions the field well for the future of healthcare reform. This article was co-authored by a senior mentor and one of her students who worked with her as both an intern and a postdoctoral
fellow. It is an expanded version of a presentation given by the first author after receiving the Association of Psychologists
in Academic Health Centers (APAHC) Distinguished Achievement in Teaching Award. The article offers a historical view on mentoring,
defines and describes the term, and delineates the characteristics of good mentors and mentees. The significant impact of
mentoring on the professional and personal development of psychology interns and postdoctoral residents and their mentors
in academic health centers is explored. Techniques for developing, maintaining, and promoting effective mentoring relationships
are provided and the ethical considerations related to mentoring are examined.

Sciences Center” given by the first author in recognition of the author’s receipt of the Association of Psychologists in Academic

Psychology and medicine research and practice have demonstrated substantial and unique bodies of knowledge designed to both
improve patient care and respond to contemporary health care needs for use of evidence and cost consciousness. At their full
potential they represent a significant paradigm shift in healthcare. Despite impressive successes, it is clear that we are
just on the cusp of such a change. These findings have had limited impact and penetration into medical practice, particularly
outside of academic medicine and large, organized systems of health care, and there are multiple examples of such limitations
in various arenas of health care. There also appear to be common themes to such examples which provide us opportunities to
consider how psychologists might move things ahead. They also suggest how our unique position in academic medicine can both
limit our impact and provide ways of creating continued shifts in the healthcare paradigm.

Psychology’s conventionally treatment of individuals’ engagement with and resistance to the societal processes in which they are embedded has come under scrutiny amid the rise of postmodernist and critical feminist perspectives (among many others) in the social sciences. A sample of social psychology’s responses to these critiques is presented in the recently published book, Social Categories in Everyday Experience edited by Shaun Wiley et al. (2011). In this essay, the challenges of seriously addressing the critiques of psychology’s conventional treatment of social categories, which implicate fundamental assumptions of the discipline, are discussed. Further, it is argued that in order to effectively construct psychological accounts of political activism and social change amid theories that are increasingly cognizant of the complexities and contingencies of social embeddiness, the person must be reclaimed and revisioned. Notions of agency that complement an intersectional and systemic vision of the social world are discussed. 相似文献

Integrating mental health care in the primary care setting has been identified in the literature as a model for increasing
access to mental health services and has been associated with enhanced clinical and functional patient outcomes and higher
patient satisfaction. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which operates the nation’s largest integrated health care
system, has taken a leadership role in creating a health care system in which mental health care is provided in the primary
care setting. This article examines VA’s efforts and progress to date in implementing evidence-based models of integrated
mental health services nationally in community based outpatient clinics, home based primary care, and outpatient primary clinics
at medical facilities. Psychology plays an important role in this progress, as part of an overall interdisciplinary effort,
in which all professions are crucially important and work together to promote the overall well-being of patients.

The Institute of Medicine has reviewed and made recommendations concerning current teaching approaches, content, and barriers
to the incorporation of behavioral/social sciences in medical school curricula (Cuff & Vanselow, 2004). This paper discusses
those recommendations, the history of medical education reform, the barriers to and evolution of behavioral/social sciences’
inclusion, and the implications for psychology’s future role in academic medicine. Psychological concepts and technology permeate
medical practice, but little progress has been made in integrating psychological and biological sciences. Looking to its basic
science domains (e.g. cognition, learning, development, neuroscience), psychology can take scientific leadership in illuminating
the mechanisms by which behavioral/social processes interact with biological functions in health, thereby providing the empirical
basis for a truly integrated bio-behavioral curriculum.

Schwarz (IPBS: Integrative Psychology & Behavioral Science 43:3, 2009) cogently demonstrates that in conjunction with scientific conventionalism psychology has developed a rather deficient view
of their subject matter: the human being. Psychology based on an impoverished notion of empirical has rendered subjectivity
or ‘the measuring apparatus man’ invisible. As his story implicitly demonstrates, psychologists supported by a positivistic
view of science (in part to be empirical) and notion of ‘objectivity’ have learned to trust their ‘rigorous’ methods instead
of their participants as capable of revealing important and interesting phenomena. If we are going to take subjectivity and
experience seriously there should be a cultivation of a new attitude or orientation regarding psychology’s subject matter
(i.e., the human being) and science. This commentary discusses Mark Freeman’s (2007) argument that the first requirement of science should be ‘fidelity to the phenomena’ and elaborates on the implications
for psychology grounded in this view of science. 相似文献

Psychologists often express concerns about the inclusion of psychology in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Roadmap
initiative. Most Roadmap themes focus on biomedical research, forming the basis for psychologists’ concerns. Although most
Roadmap funding goes toward biomedical research, social and behavioral scientists do win support. It is reasonable to ask,
however, why the Roadmap is focused so exclusively on medical research. One explanation is that medical interventions are
seen as the natural translation of basic biomedical research, whereas psychological interventions are not perceived as following
from basic behavioral research. Psychologists working in academic health centers represent the best opportunity for creating
such linkages, and therefore the best potential bridge for psychology connecting to the NIH Roadmap.

Objections to Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) seem to exceed the mere rational preference for one approach over another.
Ziegler suggested that James’s dichotomy between Tough- and Tender-Mindedness might explain REBT’s appeal to some and its
failure to attract others. REBT is a predominantly Tough-Minded therapy, but the counseling profession is largely Tender Minded.
In this article, the author examines why Tender-Minded counselors may not accept REBT, what common misperceptions of REBT
may contribute to this rejection, and how the two might be reconciled. Intervention strategies for Tender-Minded counselors
are suggested.

relations at Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania, and a Fellow of the Institute for Rational-Emotive Therapy in
New York. He died in 2004. This article was based in part upon a presentation entitled, “Obstacles to a Wider Acceptance of
RET,” given at the World Congress on Mental Health Counseling/35th Anniversary Conference on Rational-Emotive Therapy, Keystone,

This paper offers an interpretation of the relation between Pavlov’s life and work and the missions of the Pavlovian Society,
both past (“observation and observation”) and present (“interdisciplinary research on the integrated organism”). I begin with
an acount of Pavlov's life and his influence on contemporary thought. I then indicate the relation of some of Pavlov's attitudes
(e.g., his motto, his epistemological stance) to the Society's past mission. In the concluding and most controversial section,
I argue for six guiding principles derived from Pavlov, to be applied to the Society’s mission. These are: (a) a confident
methodological behaviorism; (b) a significant role assigned to both physiological and psychological factors in the prediction
and control of the integrated organism; (c) approximately equal taxonomic precision of physiological and psychological explanatory concepts; (d) distrust of toleological
explanatory concepts; (e) rejection of psychology’s instrumentalist “cognitive paradigm shift”; and (f) rejection of the representational

This paper disputes the claim that our understanding of others is enabled by a commonsense or ‘folk’ psychology, whose ‘core’ involves the attribution of intentional states in order to predict and explain behaviour. I argue that interpersonal understanding is seldom, if ever, a matter of two people assigning intentional states to each other but emerges out of a context of interaction between them. Self and other form a coupled system rather than two wholly separate entities equipped with an internalised capacity to assign mental states to the other. This applies even in those instances where one might seem to adopt a ‘detached’ perspective towards others. Thus ‘folk psychology’, as commonly construed, is not folk psychology. 相似文献

Psychologists who work in hospital settings confront assorted challenges in implementing the scientist–practitioner model.
Clinical psychologists must deal with the tension between an evidence-based model and the realities of clinical practice.
Psychologists can gain a better understanding of what it means to function as a scientist–practitioner by understanding current
debates in both psychology and medicine on the relationship between research and practice. Psychologists are not unique in
the slow pace of implementing research into practice. Psychologists in hospitals can make a contribution to the treatment
of medical patients by emphasizing the role of the treatment relationship in health-care outcomes. Medicine’s use of practice-based
research networks provides a valuable structure for psychologists to emulate in order to function as active participants in
the collection of practice-based evidence rather than passively accommodating to the evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. 相似文献

The Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers (APAHC) offers programming at the annual American Psychological
Association (APA) conventions as well as periodic APAHC conferences. Participants from academic health centers across the
country convened in St. Louis, Missouri, October 15–17, 2009, for the 4th National Conference of the Association of Psychologists
in Academic Health Centers (APAHC). The title of the conference was ‘‘Psychologists in Academic Health Centers: Facing Tomorrow’s
Challenges to AHC Programs and Careers.’’ Efforts were made to include topics relevant to academic health center (AHC) practice
including the unique challenges of working in AHCs and issues pertinent to the different stages of AHC careers. To facilitate
networking, opportunities for discussion among conferees and presenters with shared interests and concerns were provided throughout
the conference. This paper introduces the special section of JCPMS dedicated to the conference and provides a brief overview
of its development and organization. Articles selected for inclusion represent a sampling of the four conference themes: (1)
challenges to AHC programs, (2) staying current in critical clinical areas, (3) professional issues and challenges, and (4)
challenges to developing careers. Post-conference evaluation data are presented as evidence of the need for further conferences
with similar foci. The programming offered by APAHC at the APA convention in San Diego in 2010 built on the themes offered

This article reviews some of the ethical aspects of collaborative research. Scientific collaboration has known potential benefits
but it’s a challenging task to successfully accomplish a collaborative venture on ethically sound grounds. Current trends
in international healthcare research collaboration reflect limited benefits for the majority of world population. Research
collaboration between scientists of academia and industry usually has financial considerations. Successful cross-cultural
and international collaborations have to overcome many regional and global barriers. Despite these difficulties, many scientific
collaborations usually begin with an informal meeting or contact. With advancement in global communications, scientists have
greater responsibility towards the world community while considering the impact of their collaborative partnerships. I review
the basic factors that are required for forging a collaborative partnership and responsible attitudes to sustain the relationship.
Finally I conclude that scientists in healthcare research can play important roles beyond collaborations and contribute to
bringing harmony, resolving differences across the nations and countries in today’s troubled world. 相似文献

The purpose of this article was for selected Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) cognoscenti to examine the impact of
the events of September 11th, 2001, on their beliefs about religion, spirituality, and their personal philosophy—including
the role of evil in the universe and the implications of these issues on their use of REBT. The degree of consistency of the
author’s views with classical REBT theory and philosophy was examined. The authors are current or former members of the Albert
Ellis Institute’s International Training Standards and Policy Review Committee, of which Albert Ellis, REBT’s founder, is
also a member.

In 2007, the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers (APAHC), formerly known as Association of Medical School
Psychologists (AMSP), held its first national conference since 1997. At the latter conference, the author of this article
[Sheridan (1999) Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings, 6, 211–218] was asked to present some of the issues that would be important to health care psychologists in the next decade.
These issues included the role of psychology in academic health centers, interventions psychologists offer, reimbursements
for such treatments, education and training models, and research. This article examines those observations, offers new data,
and explores the current challenges and opportunities for psychologists in academic health centers. The presentation also
addresses aspirations of psychologists as well as resistances within the profession.
Parts of this paper were delivered at the 3rd Conference of the Association of Academic Health Center Psychologists in Minneapolis,

The modality effect is a central issue in multimedia learning [see Mayer (Cambridge University Press, 2005a), for a review]. Sweller’s Cognitive Load Theory (CLT), for example, presumes that an illustrated text is better understood
when presented visually rather than orally. The predictive power of CLT lies in how it links in to Baddeley’s (1986) model of working memory and Penney’s (Mem Cognit 17:398–442, 1989) Separate-Streams Hypothesis. Ginns’s (Learn Instr 4:313–331, 2005) recent meta-analysis also supports the modality effect (d = 0.72, based on 43 independent effects). This article replicates the meta-analysis of the modality effect based on 86 independent
effects (with within-study subgroups as the unit of analysis and with mean of the outcomes as the dependent measure), with results showing a reduction of the overall effect size by almost half (d = 0.38), and even more when Duval and Tweedie’s Trim and Fill method is used to correct publication bias (d = 0.20). This article also widens the scope of the analysis of moderator variables (e.g. Pace of presentation, Type of visualization,
Research group) as well as their potentially confounded effects. Finally, it is argued that, for theoretical reasons, the
so-called modality effect cannot be based on Penney’s or Baddeley’s theories and must be explained in a different way. 相似文献
