ABSTRACT

Contemplating the school to work transition in the insecure and unpredictable twenty-first century world of work can be anxiety inducing for college students. Consequently, college students may develop disempowered career stories in which they feel ill prepared to explore career prospects or engage with the world of work. This paper describes a career counselling intervention aimed at transforming the disempowered career stories of college students into more empowered versions. Grounded in career construction theory and designed as a group modality, the intervention employs poetry therapy to enhance the development of internally defined and motivated career stories among the group participants. Although this paper highlights the Kenyan context, the intervention itself can easily be adapted to other contexts.  相似文献

Faculty at a small university discussed digital portfolios for technology support students who were entering the senior year without a portfolio that illustrated their knowledge and skills for potential employers. Business leaders expressed the need for graduates to demonstrate technological skills and other critical competency areas. Recent trends replace the traditional résumés and portfolios with digital portfolios, which capture student accomplishments by electronic methods. The authors note that smaller institutions may not have the funding, administrative support, or technical support necessary for such large‐scale projects. They discuss how smaller institutions can provide students with opportunities to develop digital portfolios despite these constraints.  相似文献

Philosophical counselling has traditionally utilized a limited number of philosophical traditions: Existentialism, Stoicism, and the employment of Socratic dialogues being the most common ones. Focusing on a limited number of philosophical views does not exploit the potential therapeutic value of many other philosophical traditions, and may enhance dogmatism. In this paper we illustrate the need for a wider philosophical toolkit by showing the potential value of two rarely-employed philosophical traditions: African and Islamic philosophy. From the plethora of issues in these philosophical traditions, we highlight the relevance of African philosophy to conflicts between social duties and individual desires, and the relevance of Islamic philosophy to conflicts between faith and reason. We then emphasize the relevance of these philosophies in the current social and political situation in the Western world in general, and in Europe in particular.  相似文献

The notion of meaning is considered a significant construct in both humanistic psychology and vocational psychology. These two psychological disciplines appear to share some philosophical common ground with respect to the role of meaning making and meaning interpretation in people's life career experiences. This paper intends to take a look at such shared conceptual foundation, and examine the feasibility in incorporating the humanistic meaning construct into career psychology. After identifying historical and current problems in career counselling research, we propose a research agenda based on contextual action theory. This theory has been used as a framework for research in the career field and for general counselling practice. It is advantageous for several reasons including its conceptual basis, its detailed qualitative and quantitative research method, and the significant link it provides between research and practice. It is supported by the action-project method, an integrated set of procedures developed for conducting research. Contextual action theory and the action-project method can address major emerging issues in career counselling, for example the place of emotion and the use of narrative, and advance the research agenda in this field.  相似文献

The present article examines how the five process constructs of reflection, connectedness, meaning making, learning and agency are operationalised in a constructivist approach to career counselling, specifically a storytelling approach. This article reports on an exploratory case study of a Black South African female university student. The case study provides examples of how a career counsellor enacts these constructs and facilitates their development in a client, as well as examples of how they are evident in client dialogue and action. Insight into the process of a storytelling approach to narrative career counselling is demonstrated, from which tentative suggestions are made about how to facilitate the process constructs of reflection, connectedness, meaning making, learning and agency.  相似文献

Research in multiagent systems (MAS), or distributed artificial intelligence (DAI), dates back to the late 1970s. Initial work in the area focused on distributed interpretation of sensor data, organizational structuring and generic negotiation protocols. But several recent developments have helped reshape the focus of the field. Like the rest of Al, the field has matured from being largely exploratory in nature to focusing on formal theories of negotiation, distributed reasoning, multiagent learning and communication languages. The field is also maturing to the point of developing its first few fielded applications. The recent widespread interest in the Internet, the World Wide Web, and intelligent agent applications have further fueled the need for techniques and mechanisms by which agents representing users can interact effectively with other agents in open, dynamic environments. The development of several new international workshops and conferences has helped focus research in the area. The field is poised at a critical juncture, with stimulating problems and challenges promising some very exciting developments in the next few years.  相似文献

The structure and content of 'New Opportunities for Women' (NOW) courses run by a university department of adult education are described, and the kind of counselling appropriate to such courses is discussed. During five years' work with such courses in Newcastle, what has been in question has not been the relevance of counselling, but the ways in which it can be most usefully integrated within a 60-session course.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of this article is to describe an equal opportunities audit aimed at developing the career potential and opportunities of employees in a UK national bank. The major aims of the equal opportunities audit were: (1) to identify the position of employees in the bank by gender, race, disability, and age; (2) to identify the reasons (e.g. policy/structural barriers) and/or attitu-dinal barriers for job segregation and barriers to recruitment, training, and career progression (particularly into higher managerial grades); (3) to make appropriate recommendations for change to ensure equality of opportunity for all bank employees. A two-phased approach to data collection was utilized in this audit, namely the use of qualitative information in the form of in-house data/materials and group interview sessions, and quantitative data (statistically analysed) from the distribution of a large-scale sample (piloted), postal questionnaire (JV = 595, a 30.5% rate of response). The results were analysed in terms of issues associated with recruitment, promotion, training, working conditions, and the development of career opportunities. Differences were examined between personnel employed in seven UK locations and working within one of four job-grade bands. Gender, disability, and ethnicity differences in the responses were also investigated. The findings indicated that barriers to equality of opportunity and career development in the bank are likely to be localized to specific locations and impacting on those in certain grades. For these reasons, adoption of a blanket policy might not meet the needs of personnel seeking to maximize their career potential and opportunities in the bank.  相似文献

Findings are presented from a qualitative study exploring young people's perceptions that are relevant to the provision of a youth counselling service. Data were collected through individual and group interviews with a sample of 42 young people, most of whom were between 15 and 18 years old. The data were analysed using a grounded theory approach. Two key categories emerged from this analysis: factors which hinder young people's willingness to seek counselling, and factors which would encourage young people to make use of counselling. Specific themes within these categories are explored, and the wider implications of findings from the study are discussed.  相似文献

Although the process of compromise has long been regarded as fundamental to career decision making, it has received little theoretical or empirical attention. This study explores the role of three variables (prestige, sex type, and vocational interests) which, according to L. S. Gottfredson (1981, Journal of Counseling Psychology Monograph, 28, 545–579), strongly influence peoples' compromise choices. In general terms some of her basic propositions concerning the relative influence of the three variables are supported. However, the situation appears more complex than Gottfredson suggests, as a variety of compromise strategies were identified.  相似文献

Development of career goals that are adapted to self and opportunities is a central component of adolescent career preparation. The present longitudinal study (conducted throughout the eighth grade with three assessment points) investigated how 330 Swiss adolescents simultaneously adapt career goals to interests, scholastic achievement and environmental opportunities. Results demonstrated that students increasingly adapt their goals to the environment. Mean adaptation to environment related positively to degree of adaption to interests and achievement. Increased adaptation to environment over time related to increased adaptation to achievement but to decreased adaptation to interests. Gender, attended school type and nationality moderated adaptation processes. Structurally disadvantaged students (girls, lower requirements school track, immigrant students) reported more conflict in aligning adaptation to environment with adaptation to interests.  相似文献

The profound changes taking place in the way work is organised and structured mean that the traditional concept of the career needs updating to take account of the widening diversity of career patterns and experiences that are occurring. The papers in this symposium are concerned with examining key aspects of the new career. These include the development of theory, the study of how people are currently managing and developing their careers, and the types of career interventions that are most appropriate for the new career. They offer fresh perspectives on what is happening to careers and a range of insights about how the new career is qualitatively different from its predecessor  相似文献

In this paper we look at various conceptual models of hope and research evidence for the integral role that hope plays in counselling. We recognize hope as a dynamic process during which counsellor and client interact in ways that can be mutually influencing and we review research that explores this reciprocal process. A model for the intentional use of hope in counselling that recognizes both implicit and explicit approaches is offered. Metaphors for hope-work that position and re-position both counsellor and client in ways that may foster hope are explored. Finally, we provide suggestions for initiating conversations in which hope can be an explicit therapeutic focus.  相似文献

Career literature has been discussing the decline of the traditional career. Despite this debate, systematic information on the prevalence of contemporary career types is lacking. Two studies with large samples of employees aimed to determine types of career orientation, to explore their prevalence, and to validate these types by testing hypotheses relating each of the career orientations to work attitudes and sociodemographical variables. In study 1 (N = 835), we identified four types of career orientation – traditional/promotion, traditional/loyalty, independent, disengaged – applying exploratory latent class analysis. These were confirmed in study 2 (N = 737) with confirmatory latent class analysis. The variables associated with the career orientation types mostly followed the predicted pattern. Almost two thirds reported a traditional career orientation, while one fifth each expressed an independent and a disengaged orientation. This finding shows that people’s career orientation does not reflect the changes that many authors argue have been occurring.  相似文献
