Relationship of severity of dementia to caregiving stressors   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
In studies of individual differences and longitudinal changes in stress and coping among dementia caregivers, assessing severity of patient impairment is critically important. It is proposed that with the progression of dementia, cognitive impairment may steadily increase, but other stressful behavioral symptoms peak at various stages of dementia. Cross-sectional data from 49 caregiving families and longitudinal follow-up data from 48 families suggest that instrumental self-care deficits begin early in dementia, and basic self-care deficits increase with dementia severity, but that many distressing behavioral symptoms decrease in late dementia. Assessments of dementia patient severity should be multidimensional, and increases and decreases in various dementia patient stressors over time should be considered as factors influencing caregiver coping.  相似文献

We examined ways in which caregivers cope with stressful caregiving situations and the relations between coping strategies and caregivers' psychosocial well-being. Respondents were 58 family caregivers to patients discharged from a rehabilitation hospital. Caregivers identified a recent stressful event in caregiving and indicated strategies used to cope with this event. After controlling for patients' impairment level, analyses indicated that caregivers engaging in more escape-avoidance coping reported greater depression and more conflict in their personal relationships. Those using more positive reappraisal demonstrated greater positive affect. Younger caregivers, many of whom were women, used more avoidance strategies. Results have implications for therapeutic interventions with family caregivers.  相似文献

Several studies emphasized the key role of the cognitive appraisal processes on the way stress is experienced by adolescents. Surprisingly, few studies applied this concept to the academic stress. This research studied adolescents’ cognitive appraisal processes and their relationships with academic stress. A sample of adolescents (N = 100, mean age = 16.9 years) reported 145 academic stressful situations. Sex and age differences were analyzed. Girls granted greater importance to the stressful situation, while boys perceived themselves as having more resources for coping with it. Student’s age was negatively correlated with the perception that the stressful situation will be resolved on its own. Five appraisal patterns were identified using cluster analysis. Subsequent analysis showed that the five groups differ in their perceived degree of stress. One group was labelled at-risk appraisal group, demonstrating a high level of perceived stress, and two groups showed a favorable appraisal pattern associated with low level of perceived stress. Implications for future research and applications in school psychology are suggested.  相似文献

This study explored youth caregiving for a parent with multiple sclerosis (MS) from multiple perspectives, and examined associations between caregiving and child negative (behavioural emotional difficulties, somatisation) and positive (life satisfaction, positive affect, prosocial behaviour) adjustment outcomes overtime. A total of 88 families participated; 85 parents with MS, 55 partners and 130 children completed questionnaires at Time 1. Child caregiving was assessed by the Youth Activities of Caregiving Scale (YACS). Child and parent questionnaire data were collected at Time 1 and child data were collected 12 months later (Time 2). Factor analysis of the child and parent YACS data replicated the four factors (instrumental, social-emotional, personal-intimate, domestic-household care), all of which were psychometrically sound. The YACS factors were related to parental illness and caregiving context variables that reflected increased caregiving demands. The Time 1 instrumental and social-emotional care domains were associated with poorer Time 2 adjustment, whereas personal-intimate was related to better adjustment and domestic-household care was unrelated to adjustment. Children and their parents exhibited highest agreement on personal-intimate, instrumental and total caregiving, and least on domestic-household and social-emotional care. Findings delineate the key dimensions of young caregiving in MS and the differential links between caregiving activities and youth adjustment.  相似文献

This paper explores the relationship between religiosity and happiness among the multicultural people in Oman. A sample of 335 respondents from all walks of life in Oman was analysed using the mean happiness value and their religiousness, religion, age, education level and nationality. The findings were verified using regression and correlation analysis. It was observed that regardless of the religious belief, the level of happiness among people increases with the increasing level of religiousness. The findings could be useful not only to the general public, but also to psychologist and mental health professionals. People with depression, suicidal tendencies, low self-esteem and so on may possibly be treated with religious practices and activities. If such techniques show effectiveness, they may help to bring improvements in mental health and well-being treatments. One unique aspect of this study is that the sample consisted of people from various nationalities, religions and cultural backgrounds living in Oman.  相似文献

This study examined how positive aspects of caregiving affect adaptation to bereavement among older adults who cared for a family member with dementia. The sample consisted of 217 caregivers who were part of the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health Study. Using pre- and postloss data, hierarchical regressions were carried out to examine the effects of positive aspects of caregiving (caregiving benefit) on postloss depression and grief. Findings show that preloss caregiving benefit was associated with higher levels of postloss depression and grief, even after controlling for caregiver demographic characteristics, contextual factors, and caregiving burden. This effect was particularly strong for the relation between benefit and grief. Results demonstrate the importance of studying both positive and negative aspects of caregiving and their relation to bereavement outcomes.  相似文献

The distinction between state and trait sources of variation in psychological variables, familiar in differential psychology ever since the work of Cattell, is translated into a linear model of state-trait analysis. On the basis of this model indices of relative state- and trait variance of a measure (independent of errors of measurement) and the psychometric reliability of the same measure (independent of true state variance) can be determined. The model is applied to a larger set of data from in-field research employing 149 male high-school students (average age 17 years) from the city of Hamburg. Following a time-sampling plan of data acquisition, subjects were requested over a period of three successive weeks and on the average twelve times a day to indicate (on a portable computerized behavioral data recorder) their current mood and feeling and had to answer short psychometric tests (in-field psychometrics); in addition, two peripheral psychophysiological measures of activation (heart rate, finger temperature) were recorded. The psychophysiological measures depended on state variations to about two thirds of their true score variance, the different cognitive tests to about 50 to 80 percent of their true score variance on trait variations. Different scales for recording current mood and feeling states gave different state-trait variance percentages. The method also allows for determining intraindividual psychometric state reliability coefficients. Fields of application of the method in different areas of psychology are indicated.  相似文献

This study investigated self-reported state (anxiety, physical symptoms, cognitions, internally focused attention, safety behaviors, social performance) and trait (social anxiety, depressive symptoms, dysfunctional self-consciousness) predictors of post-event processing (PEP) subsequent to two social situations (interaction, speech) in participants with a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and healthy controls (HC). The speech triggered significantly more intense PEP, especially in SAD. Regardless of the type of social situation, PEP was best predicted by situational anxiety and dysfunctional cognitions among the state variables. If only trait variables were considered, PEP following both situations was accounted for by trait social anxiety. In addition, dysfunctional self-consciousness contributed to PEP-speech. If state and trait variables were jointly considered, for both situations, situational anxiety and dysfunctional cognitions were confirmed as the most powerful PEP predictors above and beyond trait social anxiety (interaction) and dysfunctional self-consciousness (speech). Hence, PEP as assessed on the day after a social situation seems to be mainly determined by state variables. Trait social anxiety and dysfunctional self-consciousness also significantly contribute to PEP depending on the type of social situation. The present findings support dysfunctional cognitions as a core cognitive mechanism for the maintenance of SAD. Implications for treatment are discussed.  相似文献
