Weber’s concept of social closure can help to illuminate the social processes that result in the development of militant Muslim
groups. Adapting and applying the concept helps to establish the interrelationships between secular processes and Islamification
that are designed by the militants to exclude others and usurp governments. These processes include the implementation of
secularisation, conversely concessions to religion and the reinvigoration of Islamic concepts that are used as codes of closure
to unite followers and ostracize other Muslims and religious denominations.

This article studies the phenomenology of chronic illness in light of phenomenology’s insights into ecstatic temporality and
freedom. It shows how a chronic illness can, in lived experience, manifest itself as a disturbance of our usual relation to
ecstatic temporality and thence as a disturbance of freedom. This suggests that ecstatic temporality is related to another
sort of time—“provisional time”—that is in turn rooted in the body. The article draws on Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception and Heidegger’s Being and Time, shedding light on the latter’s concept of ecstatic temporality. It also discusses implications for self-management of chronic
illness, especially in children.

The aim of the present paper is to show that Hegel’s concept of personal respect is of great interest to contemporary Critical
Theory. The author first analyzes this notion as it appears in the Philosophy of Right and then offers a new interpretation of the conceptual relation between personal respect and the institutions of (private)
property and (capitalist) markets. In doing so, he shows why Hegel’s concept of personal respect allows us to understand markets
as possible institutionalizations of this kind of recognition, and why it is compatible with a critique of neoliberal capitalism.
He argues that due to these features Hegel’s notion of personal respect is of great interest to theoreticians within the tradition
of critical theory.

investigation, and more specifically in discourse analysis. Claiming that argumentativity is a constitutive feature of discourse,
it endeavors to explore logos as both reason and language by analyzing patterns of reasoning in their discursive actualization. In this approach, the attempt
at influencing the audience’s representations is analyzed in the complexity of a discourse explored in its formal and socio-institutional
dimensions.

During the twentieth century, bibliographic classification theory underwent a structural revolution. The first modern bibliographic
classifications were top-down systems that started at the universe of knowledge and subdivided that universe downward to minute
subclasses. After the invention of faceted classification by S.R. Ranganathan, the ideal was to build bottom-up classifications
that started with the universe of concepts and built upward to larger and larger faceted classes. This ideal has not been
achieved, and the two kinds of classification systems are not mutually exclusive. This paper examines the process by which
this structural revolution was accomplished by looking at the spread of facet theory after 1924 when Ranganathan attended
the School of Librarianship, London, through selected classification textbooks that were published after that date. To this
end, the paper examines the role of W.C.B. Sayers as a teacher and author of three editions of The Manual of Classification for Librarians and Bibliographers. Sayers influenced both Ranganathan and the various members of the Classification Research Group (CRG) who were his students.
Further, the paper contrasts the methods of evaluating classification systems that arose between Sayers’s Canons of Classification in 1915–1916 and J. Mills’s A Modern Outline of Library Classification in 1960 in order to demonstrate the speed with which one kind of classificatory structure was overtaken by another.

The great Italian indologist Giuseppe Tucci, believing that the text was originally a Sanskrit text, translated it into Sanskrit
and gave it the title Upāyahṛdaya. The paper provides the historical background of the development of logic in Classical India up to the time of this text,
summarizes its content and translates its first section.

This paper develops a Kantian account of the moral assessment of institutions. The problem I address is this: while a deontological
theory may find that some legal institutions are required by justice, it is not obvious how such a theory can assess institutions
not strictly required (or prohibited) by justice. As a starting-point, I consider intuitions that in some cases it is desirable
to attribute non-consequentialist moral value to institutions not required by justice. I will argue that neither consequentialist
nor virtue-ethical accounts account for these intuitions, suggesting that a distinctive deontological account is needed. The
account I give is drawn from Kant’s Metaphysics of Morals; I distinguish it from Kantian views of institutions developed by Barbara Herman and Onora O’Neill. Throughout, I use marriage
as an example.

There are some texts about moral sentences in the Islamic logical literature especially in the logical books of Ibn Sina that
have been interpreted in completely opposite ways. Relying on these texts, some scholars take Ibn Sina to be proposing a non-cognitive
theory of ethics and to the contrary some scholars hold that he is a proponent of a sort of moral intuitionism. Reflecting
on the alleged textual evidence in Ibn Sina’s books, I propose a middle way in the interpretation that accepts the cognitive
status of the moral sentences but at the same time rejects intuitionism.

Phenomenology of the body and the third generation of cognitive science, both of which attribute a central role in human cognition
to the body rather than to the Cartesian notion of representation, face the criticism that higher-level cognition cannot be
fully grasped by those studies. The problem here is how explicit representations, consciousness, and thoughts issue from perception
and the body, and how they cooperate in human cognition. In order to address this problem, we propose a research program,
a cognitive phenomenology of the body, which is basically motivated by the perspective of Merleau-Ponty. We find a substantial clue in developmental psychological
studies on the body and language.

the world as part of mainstream culture and their experience of being between worlds, or intermundia. This paper traces a path of using an imaginal approach by means of an alchemical hermeneutic methodology and transference
dialogues to extend beneath the complexity of our knowledge and the knowledge of our complexity enfolded by reverie and fantasy.
This paper also offers for consideration a proposal for an interventionless approach to the intermundia of clergy transitioning out of parish ministry.

In his article ‘A New View of Language, Emotion and the Brain,’ Dan Shanahan claims that the post-war Cognitive Turn focused
mainly on information processing and that little attention was paid to the dramatic role played by emotion in human cognition.
One key argument in his defence of a more comprehensive view of human cognition rests upon the idea that the process of symbolization—a
unique capacity only developed by humans—combines, right from the start, information processing and feelings. The author argues
that any theory ignoring this fact would miss the whole point, just as mainstream cognitive science has done since Noam Chomsky
published Syntactic Structures, exactly 50 years ago.

Advocates of sortal essentialism have argued that concepts like “thing” or “object” lack the unambiguous individuative criteria
necessary to play the role of genuine sortals in reference. Instead, they function as “dummy sortals” which are placeholders
or incomplete designations. In disqualifying apparent placeholder sortals, however, these philosophers have posed insuperable
problems for accounts of childhood conceptual development. I argue that recent evidence in psychology demonstrates that children do possess simple or basic sortals of physical objects or things. I contend that these concepts provide the genuine individuative
criteria necessary for reference. As a consequence, sortalism can be made compatible with the developmental facts of conceptual
development.

By taking into account dissident/political and art historical interpretations of Soviet art, I analyze how polemics about
totalitarianism in the West, which generally corresponded with Cold War debates and Eastern European dissident thought, shaped the post-Soviet
evaluations of national artistic legacies. It is argued that the political relationship with the totalitarian past, like in
many post-socialist areas where the immediate past was subjected to radical re-evaluation, affected Lithuanian artists’ and
critics’ attitude towards local Soviet art. Because of an obvious lack of underground art in Soviet Lithuania, however, the
retrospective usage of political categories here became problematic. Especially in international representations, the complexities
of artists’ relationship with officialdom came to be routinely assigned to the phenomenon of non-conformism; this eventually
obfuscated the differences between the Lithuanian Soviet art context as somewhat different from the Russian case.

Relatively little is known about the factor structure of disruptive behavior among preadolescent girls. The present study
reports on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of disruptive girl behavior over four successive data waves as rated
by parents and teachers in a large, representative community sample of girls (N = 2,451). Five factors were identified from parent ratings (oppositional behavior/conduct problems, inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity,
relational aggression, and callous-unemotional behaviors), and four factors were identified derived from teacher ratings (oppositional
behavior/conduct problems/callous-unemotional behaviors, inattention, hyperactivityimpulsivity, and relational aggression).
There was a high degree of consistency of items loading on equivalent factors across parent and teacher ratings. Year-to-year
stability of factors between ages five and 12 was high for parent ratings (ICC = 0.70 to 0.88), and slightly lower for teacher
ratings (ICC = 0.56 to 0.83). These findings are discussed in terms of possible adjustment to the criteria for children's
disruptive behavior disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

The development of reflex theory in its Pavlovian interpretation had significant resonance in a wide range of academic research
areas. Its impact on the so-called humanities was, perhaps, no less than the effect it had in medical science. The idea of
the conditioned reflex suggesting a physiological explanation of behaviour patterns received a particularly warm welcome in
philosophy and psychology as it provided a scientifically-based tool for a conceptual u-turn towards objectivism. This article
looks into the ways these ideas contributed to the formation of the Soviet language theory, namely, to the sociological interpretation
of language development and speech production presented in the pioneering works of Sergej M. Dobrogaev (1873–1952).

This paper argues that certain central tenets of the traditional theory of the just war cannot be correct. It then advances an alternative account grounded in the same considerations of justice that govern self-defense at the individual level. The implications of this account are unorthodox. It implies that, with few exceptions, combatants who fight for an unjust cause act impermissibly when they attack enemy combatants, and that combatants who fight in a just war may, in certain circumstances, legitimately target noncombatants who bear a significant degree of moral responsibility for a wrong, when the prevention or rectification of that wrong constitutes a just cause for war.
