This study was undertaken to determine the validity of the postulated common meanings for the KTSA symbols using the semantic differential to determine empirically Ss' reactions to the KTSA symbol objects. These responses were then used to confirm Kahn's postulated “popular meanings for the symbols. The connotative meanings for the KTSA symbols were determined by the semantic differential ratings of 48 male and 48 female preadolescents. The findings confirmed Kahn's postulated meanings for some of the symbol, while others only partially confirmed and still others were not confirmed at all. The semantic differential ratings were statistically significant 260 out of 336 possible times. The interpretive meaning of the results is discussed.  相似文献

A detailed evaluation of deprived children on symbolic performance and specific levels of adjustment using the Kahn Test of Symbol Arrangement (KTSA) was undertaken. Thirty long-term (Recidivist) and 30 short-term (Non-Recidivist) hospitalized children between 13 and 16 years of age were randomly chosen from a hospital population and compared using the weighted sum of scores of the KTSA. Generally, the findings indicate that children of the Non-Recidivist group possessed significantly greater total weighted symbolization scores than those of the Recidivist group. Of the nine subhypotheses pertaining to specific levels of adjustment, using the symbolization subcategories of the KTSA, Recidivists differed significantly from Non-Recidivists in seven. These results suggest that length of immobilization of children in a hospital setting has a distinct negative effect on symbolization performance, particular perceptual and conceptual processes, and response style.  相似文献

28 brain-damaged males ranging in age from 8 to 16 yr. were compared with 28 nondamaged matching controls on their Symbol Digit Modalities Test performance. The damaged group performed significantly more poorly, and 75% of the subjects scored more than .5 z score below their matched controls. The results suggest that this brief and objective test can be used to screen brain-damaged children when their performance is compared to that of a control group or the normative group.  相似文献

The responses on the Slingerland tests of 29 learning disabled and 11 nondisabled children in Grade 1 distinguished the two groups, except for copying (near vision). Copying (far vision) and auditory, visual, and kinesthetic perception and discrimination together were the strongest predictors of group membership.  相似文献

Nonverbal learning disabilities: The syndrome and a case study   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Presents the syndrome of nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) and the model developed to encompass its complex manifestations. Included are the history of the development of the syndrome, the types of children in whom its principal features are manifest, the hypothesized neurological bases of the syndrome, and a test of its developmental dimensions. A case study with assessment results and treatment implications illustrates the clinical dimensions of the syndrome. General developmental and treatment implications of the NLD syndrome and the NLD model are also included.  相似文献

The neuropsychological test scores of 23 learning disabled children were compared with those of a matched population of normal children in the 9-1 to 13-1 age range. All children were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), a dichotic listening task involving both free and directed recall conditions, a handedness inventory, the Tactile Performance Test and the Category Test from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. A multivariate analysis of variance resulted in a significant separation between groups (p less than .001) using these procedures. A stepwise discriminant function analysis revealed that both of the directed dichotic tasks contributed the most of all 13 measures to the significant group separation. In addition, other cognitive tasks found to discriminate normal from learning disabled children include general verbal processes, concept formation, and tactile memory. These findings suggest that the directed dichotic listening procedure and the WISC-R Verbal IQ measure are reasonably valuable clinical tools in the classification of learning disabilities.  相似文献

The primary purpose of the present study is to examine the effects of attention deficits, learning disability, and the combined effects of both on the learning and memory processes, as measured by the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT). Thirty children (age range 12-17) diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), 18 children (age range 11-17) diagnosed with learning disabilities (LD), and 64 children (age range 12-17) diagnosed with ADHD as well as with LD, and 28, 18, and 62 matched controls, respectively, participated in this study. It was found that the children diagnosed with ADHD did not differ in any of the verbal learning and memory measures derived from the Rey AVLT. The group with LD was impaired in the overall number of words recalled across the learning phase. Performance of the children diagnosed with ADHD +LD showed a similar impairment as the group with LD (i.e., overall amount of words learned) and, in addition, their retrieval efficiency was also impaired. In conclusion, this study indicates that verbal memory is preserved in children with ADHD if they have no LD and their intelligence is in the normal range or above. LD by itself leads to difficulties in acquisition, but the combination of ADHD+LD leads to additional impairment in retrieval processes.  相似文献

An operational definition of “learning disabilities” is presented from the standpoint that classificatory psychoeducational definitions must ultimately relate to educational processes. Thus the condition should be described in terms of abilities crucial to educational achievement, and noneducational criteria should not be employed. It is pointed out that the most generally accepted current definition — which identifies children as “learning-disabled” on the basis of behavioral criteria, while excluding others because of etiological and other nonbehavioral factors — overlooks functional similarities among such groups as educable mentally retarded and emotionally disturbed children. These similarities warrant the inclusion under the rubric of “learning-disabled” of some children who may also be grouped within other diagnostic categories. Consequently, the profferred definition is based on a primary concern with day-to-day learning and management issues. Concepts subtended by the definition are operationally defined, and its relationship to programming is discussed.  相似文献

The prevalence of mental health problems in young people with learning disabilities and the disability rights movement provide the background to this paper. The aims are to investigate the inclusivity of counselling; gain insight into inclusive practices; and put forward a model for inclusive counselling practice. Mixed methodology provides quantitative and qualitative data through a survey of counsellors (n = 396) and a series of semi‐structured interviews (n = 15). The results produce six indicators of inclusive counselling, which are used to build a model for inclusive counselling practice: proactive approach to inclusion; focus on building relationships; operationalising equal opportunities policies; inclusive initial assessments; adopting flexible and creative approaches to counselling; and training and awareness raising. The implications for research and practice are to acknowledge the exclusive nature of the profession and address the issue of inclusion through training, professional development and further research in the field. The model for inclusive counselling practice is put forward as a tool for auditing existing counselling provision and as guidance for counsellors and policy makers in increasing inclustion of young people with learning disabilities in mainstream counselling.  相似文献

The self concept of the adolescent with learning disabilities   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
B S Rosenberg  E L Gaier 《Adolescence》1977,12(48):489-498
The Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory (CSEI) was administered to 23 Ss diagnosed to have learning disabilities, and normally achieving seventh graders (N = 70) to investigate: a) whether differences exist between the self-esteem of the adolescent with learning disabilities and the normally achieving adolescent, b) the dimensions of self concept in which these differences occur, and c) the relationship between self concept and the number of years in the special classroom for the adolescent with learning disabilities. The data were fitted to a 2 X 2 (ability X school) fixed effects non-orthogonal multivariate analysis of variance model. A significant difference (p less than .05) in "social self-peer" self concept favoring the "normally" achieving S's was found. A trend was evidenced for more negative "general self" and "school-academic" self concepts for the learning disabilities sample. Number of years in the special class did not appear associated with self concept as measured by the CSEI.  相似文献

Rules for the classification of two subtypes of learning disabilities (LD), namely, Basic Phonological Processing Disabilities (BPPD) and Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD), are reported. These rules (refined as a result of application to two separate samples of children with LD) were used to select children from an entirely new sample who could be classified as having "definite" or "probable" BPPD or NLD. As a first step in the external validation of these rules, the patterns of psychosocial functioning exhibited by these two subtypes of LD were determined. As predicted, the vast majority of the BPPD subtype exhibited a pattern most consistent with normal or relatively normal psychosocial adjustment, and no appreciable increase in the incidence of significant psychosocial disturbance with advancing years. Also, as predicted, an increasing incidence of internalized psychosocial dysfunction (a form of significant psychosocial disturbance) was evident in the NLD subtype with advancing years. It is clear that children classified as having BPPD or NLD using these rules exhibit quite different, and predicted, relative patterns of psychosocial functioning. Thus, in this sense, the rules have concurrent validity. Finally, sets of rules/criteria for classification are presented that reflect their actual incidence in the two subtypes of LD generated for use in the validation phase of this investigation. These rules would appear to be useful for clinical purposes. It is also clear that they should be subjected to further validation studies in a broader age range for clinical and research purposes.  相似文献

ObjectiveThis study sought to cross-sectionally evaluate the relation between learning disorders (LD) and long-term concussion outcomes.MethodSeventy-three asymptomatic male university athletes (23 history of concussion with LD; 24 history of concussion no LD; 26 controls) completed the Beck Depression Inventory-2 (BDI-II), the Profile of Mood States (POMS), the Cogstate battery, and an Oddball task during which event-related brain potentials were recorded.ResultsConcussed athletes with LD exhibited greater depressive symptoms (BDI-II), greater total mood disturbance (POMS), decreased accuracy on the One-Card Learning and the N-back task (Cogstate), decreased accuracy on the Oddball task, and reduced ERN amplitude relative to both the concussed athletes without a LD and controls. Concussed athletes with LD also exhibited prolonged P3 latency relative to controls. Irrespective of LD, concussed athletes exhibited increased anger-hostility and decreased Pe amplitudes relative to controls. No differences were observed in P3a amplitude or latency.ConclusionHaving LD may be a significant factor moderating the neurophysiological, cognitive and psycho-affective outcomes of concussion, and may explain a significant portion of the persistent deficits observed by researchers and clinicians.  相似文献
