Stanisław Brzozowski’s performative criticism

Stanis?aw Brzozowski was active as philosopher and literary critic for only a few years at the turn of the twentieth century, yet his writings are still inspire contemporary thinkers and critics. In every important phase of the development of Polish literary criticism, Polish intellectuals have acknowledged Brzozowski as a writer who had the courage and critical acumen to confront modernity and examine closely contemporary trends of thought from the perspective of social and individual life. This continued presence of the celebrated critic cannot but be interesting for the researcher who is led to ask, what is so intriguing in Brzozowski’s work, why do successive generations of critics and intellectuals return to Brzozowski? Drawing on many important interpretations of Brzozowski’s work (Burek, G?owiński, Nycz), I want to show that in Brzozowski’s work it is possible to find everything contemporary criticism and thought needs, because his books contain, in nuce, projects and strategies which can be (and are) used in different ways by critics representing different ideologies and worldviews. Brzozowski worked out, or rather attempted to work out, ideas which are a source of modern critical projects but in addition his work comprises a repertoire of possibilities which contemporary critical thought can turn to its advantage. Brzozowski’s work can be also treated as a performative act, calling forth the reader’s response, in this way shedding new light on it. I also show that “performative consciousness” is both close to Brzozowski’s practice of writing and deeply rooted in his philosophical conviction. Brzozowski can be considered a representative of modernist, critical literature, in which reading and writing become a mode of experience, a privileged social discourse, and a “leaven,” an act and an activity.     

Svavarsdóttir’s Burden

It is sometimes observed that the debate between internalists and externalists about moral motivation seems to have reached a deadlock. There are those who do, and those who don??t, recognize the intuitive possibility of amoralists: i.e. people having moral opinions without being motivated to act accordingly. This makes Sigrun Svavarsdóttir??s methodological objection to internalism especially interesting, since it promises to break the deadlock through building a case against internalism (construed as a conceptual thesis), not on such intuitions, but on a methodological principle for empirical investigations. According to the objection, internalists incur the burden of argument, since they have to exclude certain explanations of the (verbal and non-verbal) behavior of apparent amoralists, while externalists don??t. In this paper I argue that the objection fails: the principle for empirical investigations is plausible, but Svavarsdóttir??s application of it to internalism is not. Once we clearly distinguish between the conceptual and the empirical aspects of the internalist and externalist explanations of apparent amoralists, we see that these views incur an equal burden of explanation. I end the paper with a positive suggestion to the effect that there is a third alternative, a view that involves accepting neither internalism nor externalism, which does not incur an explanatory burden of the relevant sort.

Este trabajo pretende proponer algunas de las condiciones formales básicas para una psicología del arte y la experiencia estética. La primera condición formal, de inspiración funcionalista, es que toda explicación psicológica debe ser necesariamente genética, es decir, ontogenética, filogenética, historiogenética y microgenética, al mismo tiempo. La segunda condición formal es que el verdadero interés de los fenómenos estéticos (y tal vez de los fenómenos humanos, en general) es su concreción, su determinación temporo-espacial, y no su nivel de ajuste a (de deductibilidad a partir de) enunciados generales de carácter legaliforme. La tercera, y última, condición formal es que la determinación, la concreción, de un fenómeno estético, contemplado o producido, está guiada no sólo por sus condiciones genéticas, sino también por su sentido, por su capacidad de orientar o transformar nuestras vidas.

Estudio y adaptación experimental del test discriminativo neurológico rápido «QNST»

RESUMEN

En este trabajo los autores presentan una primera adaptación al castellano del Test Discriminativo Neurológico Rápido (QNST), de Mutti, Sterling y Spalding (1974–1978). Para ello comienzan describiendo los catorce subtests que componen la prueba, cómo se corrige y los estudios de validez y fiabilidad realizados. Seguidamente presentan su propio estudio del test, teniendo en cuenta variables tales como edad, sexo, “status” y procedencia rural-urbana (esta última sólo para seleccionar la muestra) y realizan unos baremos referidos a una muestra de la población española. Los autores encuentran que los siete y ocho años son edades clave en las que se producen cambios significativos en la ejecución del QNST, que las diferencias encontradas según el sexo son mínimas y que el nivel cultural influye en la realización de algunas tareas.

Relation Formulas for Protoalgebraic Equality Free Quasivarieties; Pałasińska’s Theorem Revisited

We provide a new proof of the following Pa?asińska's theorem: Every finitely generated protoalgebraic relation distributive equality free quasivariety is finitely axiomatizable. The main tool we use are ${\mathcal{Q}}$ Q -relation formulas for a protoalgebraic equality free quasivariety ${\mathcal{Q}}$ Q . They are the counterparts of the congruence formulas used for describing the generation of congruences in algebras. Having this tool in hand, we prove a finite axiomatization theorem for ${\mathcal{Q}}$ Q when it has definable principal ${\mathcal{Q}}$ Q -subrelations. This is a property obtained by carrying over the definability of principal subcongruences, invented by Baker and Wang for varieties, and which holds for finitely generated protoalgebraic relation distributive equality free quasivarieties.     

Creación de símbolos y ficción durante el segundo año de vida

Resumen

A pesar de lo mucho que se ha escrito sobre la comunicación simbólica y la capacidad de ficción en el desarrollo ontogenético, son muchos aún los interrogantes sin respuesta. Ángel Rivière elaboró una concepción novedosa acerca del símbolo enactivo y la ficción, en el contexto amplio de su teoría de semiosis por suspensió n, que responde a algunos d ellos. Específicamente, su teoría brinda una hipótesis original acerca de la naturaleza y la constitución de ambos. A la luz de sus ideas y sobre la base de un estudio longitudinal de dos casos únicos, en este trabajo se analizan los sucesivos pasos en el desarrollo que permiten la construcción de símbolos enactivos y la creación de ficción en el período evolutivo comprendido entre los doce y los veinticuatro meses.     

La cara y la emoción: datos para una réplica

Resumen

Este artículo es una réplica a los límites que pone Valle-Inclán a la universalidad de ciertas expresiones faciales de las emociones. Se rebate que el empleo de expresiones espontáneas, la falta de entrenamiento de los jueces y la técnica de recogida de los datos sean variables relevantes en los estudios de juicios. Además, se aportan datos de trabajos omitidos en el artículo objeto de la réplica que apoyan la tesis de la universalidad de diferentes expresiones faciales de las emociones.     

A Reply to Szabó’s “Descriptions and Uniqueness”

Szabó (2000) follows Heim (1982,1983) in viewing familiarity, rather thanuniqueness, as the essence of the definitearticle, but attempts to derive bothfamiliarity and uniqueness implicationspragmatically, assigning a single semanticinterpretation to both the definite andindefinite articles. I argue that if there isno semantic (conventional) distinction betweenthe articles, then there is no way to derivethese differences between them pragmatically.
