The roles of frequency and location cues in auditory selective attention were investigated in a series of experiments in which target tones were distinguished from distractors by frequency, location, or the conjunction of frequency and location features. When frequency separations in high-rate tone sequences were greater than 1 octave, participants were fastest at identifying targets defined by frequency and were sometimes faster at identifying conjunction than location targets. Frequency salience diminished as filtering demands were reduced: At long interstimulus intervals (> 2.0 s), performance was superior in location conditions. The results suggest that frequency may play a role in auditory selective attention tasks analogous to the role of spatial position in visual attention.  相似文献

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from subjects as they attended to one diagonal of a visual display. The task was to respond only to memory set items (targets) at the attended diagonal and to ignore stimuli at the other diagonal. The probability that the display contained either an attended or an unattended target was 0.30. The spatial separation between attended and unattended stimuli was 1.6°. The ERP elicited by stimuli at the unattended diagonal contained a sequence of phasic components. The early N170 and P250 components were elicited by the onset of the display and the later components N480 and P550 by the offset of the display. The presence of masks delayed N170 and P250. The ERPs elicited by attended non-targets, in addition, contained an increased N350 (Cz, Fz) and P410 (P3a, Pz, Cz). The ERPs elicited by attended and unattended non-targets started to differ after 200 msec. This finding suggested that selection is relatively late if selection must be based on a conjunction of features (location and orientation) and if the spatial separation between attended and unattended stimuli is small. Memory-set size affected the ERPs after 250 msec. The ERPs elicited by attended stimuli contained a broadly distributed (Fz, Cz, Pz) negative endogeneous component. The amplitude of this component was related to memory-set size. Finally, the ERPs elicited by attended targets contained a large P3b (Pz, Oz) with a peak latency around 600 msec. The ERP results suggested the existence of three processing stages: (1) orienting to the attended stimuli; (2) controlled search, and (3) target decision.  相似文献

Young adult subjects attended selectively to brief noise bursts delivered in free field via a horizontal array of seven loudspeakers spaced apart by 9° of angle. Frequent “standard” stimuli (90%) and infrequent “target/deviant” stimuli (10%) of increased bandwidth were delivered at a fast rate in a random sequence equiprobably from each speaker. In separate runs, the subjects’ task was to selectively attend to the leftmost, center, or rightmost speaker and to press a button to the infrequent “target” stimuli occurring at the designated spatial location. Behavioral detection rates and concurrently recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) indicated that auditory attention was deployed as a finely tuned gradient around the attended sound source, thus providing support for gradient models of auditory spatial attention. Furthermore, the ERP data suggested that the spatial focusing of attention was achieved in two distinct stages, with an early more broadly tuned filtering of inputs occurring over the first 80–200 msec after stimulus onset, followed by a more narrowly focused selection of attended-location deviants that began at around 250 msec and closely resembled the behavioral gradient of target detections.  相似文献

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) elicited by multidimensional auditory stimuli were recorded from the scalp in a selective-attention task. Subjects listened to tone pips varying orthogonally between two levels each of pitch, location, and duration and responded to longer duration target stimuli having specific values of pitch and location. The discriminability of the pitch and location attributes was varied between groups. By examining the ERPs to tones that shared pitch and/or locational cues with the designated target, we inferred interrelationships among the processing of these attributes. In all groups, stimuli that failed to match the target tone in an easily discriminable cue elicited only transitory ERP signs of selective processing. Tones sharing the "easy" but not the "hard" cue with the target elicited ERPs that indicated more extensive processing, but not as extensive as stimuli sharing both cues. In addition, reaction times and ERP latencies to the designated targets were not influenced by variations in the discriminability of pitch and location. This pattern of results is consistent with parallel, self-terminating models and holistic models of processing and contradicts models specifying either serial or exhaustive parallel processing of these dimensions. Both the parallel, self-terminating models and the holistic models provide a generalized mechanism for hierarchical stimulus selections that achieve an economy of processing, an underlying goal of classic, multiple-stage theories of selective attention.  相似文献

采用提高了非注意纯度的“跨通路延迟反应”实验模式,研究跨通路注意的事件相关电位(ERP)成分,以注意ERP减去非注意ERP的早期差异负波(Nd1)为主要分析对象。被试者为12名青年正常人。结果发现:①听觉偏差刺激、视觉标准与偏差刺激皆在其特异性感觉区域的头皮部位,观察到注意引起N1波幅增大的现象。Nd1的起始时间与注意N1相同,而早于非注意N1,支持注意的早期选择学说;②听觉与视觉偏差刺激产生的Nd1最大峰分布在它们各自的初级感觉投射区,而标准刺激诱发的Nd1最大峰却分布于额部,表明跨通路选择性注意对偏差刺激的加工部位主要是通路特异性的,而对标准刺激的加工部位则主要是通路上的。作者据此针对选择性注意中长期争论问题进一步提出,注意的选择性发生时程的早晚可因刺激条件而异,信息过滤器的位置具有可塑性。  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) to tone pairs and single tones were measured for 16 participants with specific language impairment (SLI) and 16 age-matched controls aged from 10 to 19 years The tone pairs were separated by an inter-stimulus interval (ISI) of 20, 50 or 150 ms. The intraclass correlation (ICC) was computed for each participant between the ERP to a single tone and the ERP to the tone pair. A high ICC indicates that the brain response to a tone pair is similar to that for a single tone. ICCs were significantly higher at short than at long ISIs. At 50-ms ISI, ICCs were higher for younger than older participants. Age and ISI interacted with SLI status: ERPs of older participants with SLI differed from age-matched controls, and resembled ERPs of younger controls, consistent with a theory of immature auditory processing in SLI.  相似文献

The time required to conjoin stimulus features in high-rate serial presentation tasks was estimated in auditory and visual modalities. In the visual experiment, targets were defined by color, orientation, or the conjunction of color and orientation features. Responses were fastest in color conditions, intermediate in orientation conditions, and slowest in conjunction conditions. Estimates of feature conjunction time (FCT) were derived on the basis of a model in which features were processed in parallel and then conjoined, permitting FCTs to be estimated from the difference in reaction times between conjunction and the slowest single-feature condition. Visual FCTs averaged 17 msec, but were negative for certain stimuli and subjects. In the auditory experiment, targets were defined by frequency, location, or the conjunction of frequency and location features. Responses were fastest in frequency conditions, but were faster in conjunction than in location conditions, yielding negative FCTs. The results from both experiments suggest that the processing of stimulus features occurs interactively during early stages of feature conjunction.  相似文献

Previous research suggests that numerosity judgments for sequences of tones improve when the sequence is structured such that equal and small groups of tones alternate between the ears. The present. study systematically investigates the effects of the structure of tone sequences on number judgment. Tone frequency is chosen as the grouping principle instead of spatial location. In the first experiment, sequences with equal groups of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 tones (groups alternating between 800 and 1, 250 Hz) were compared with monotonous sequences. At a slow repetition rate of the tones (280 msec onset to onset), grouping the sequence deteriorated the numerosity judgment. At II fast repetition rate of the tones (100 msec onset to onset) grouping improved numerosity judgment, but only if the group size did not exceed 4 to 5 tones. In the second experiment, the equality of group size in the sequence as a necessary condition for the improvement was investigated. It was found that tone sequences comprised of equal groups were judged more accurately in number than sequences comprised of unequal groups. These results seem to give support for the existence of an auditory subitizing process. The results of this study are also compared with the results of studies in which sequences of tones, alternating one by om! between locations or frequencies, had to be judged in number.  相似文献

Over the past two decades, a number of studies have been based on the dichotic temporal order judgment (TOJ) paradigm, to compare auditory temporal processing in various subpopulations to that of young, normal controls. The reported estimates of dichotic TOJ thresholds, expressed as the interstimulus intervals (ISIs) for 75 % accuracy among the controls, have varied. In the present study, we examined the influence of tone duration, within the 10- to 40-msec range, on dichotic TOJ accuracy and threshold. The results indicated that increases in either ISI or tone duration increased dichotic TOJ accuracy similarly, implying that changes in tone duration may affect dichotic TOJs simply by adding to the delay between onset of the tone at the lead ear and onset of the tone at the lag ear. The dichotic TOJ thresholds from three published studies that had used tones as stimuli and the dichotic thresholds from the present study all fell within 0.5 standard deviations from the theoretical line of a 10-msec reduction in threshold for every 10-msec increase in tone duration. When the dichotic TOJ threshold data from the present study and from the published studies were converted to stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) and plotted as a function of tone duration, they fell very close to or on a zero-slope line, indicating that when ISI and duration are summed to yield an SOA, dichotic TOJ thresholds are invariant to tone duration within the range of 10–40 msec.  相似文献

Previous research has demonstrated a potent, stimulus-specific form of interference in short-term auditory memory. This effect has been interpreted in terms of interitem confusion and grouping, but the present experiments suggested that interference might be a feature-specific phenomenon. Participants compared standard and comparison tones over a 10-sec interval and were required to determine whether they differed in timbre. A single interfering distractor tone was presented either 50 msec or 8 sec after the offset of the standard (Experiment 1) or 2 sec prior to its onset (Experiment 2). The distractor varied in the number of features it shared with the standard and comparison, and this proved critical, since performance on the task was greatly impaired when the distractor either consisted of novel, unshared features (Experiment 1) or contained the distinguishing feature of the comparison tone (Experiments 1 and 2). These findings were incompatible with earlier accounts of forgetting but were fully explicable by the recent timbre memory model, which associates interference in short-term auditory memory with an "updating" process and feature overwriting. These results suggest similarities with the mechanisms that underlie forgetting in verbal short-term memory.  相似文献

Auditory streaming and its relevance to attentional processing was examined using event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in situations facilitating perception of one or two streams of sounds. Subjects listened to sequences of brief tones of three different frequencies presented in random order. In evenly spaced (ES) conditions, the three frequencies were equidistant on the musical scale. In clustered, easy (CE) conditions, the attended frequency was distinct, while the middle and extreme distractor tones were clustered together. In clustered, hard (CH) conditions, the attended frequency was clustered with one of the distractors. The subjects pressed a button in response to occasional target tones of longer duration at a prespecified frequency. The subjects were faster and more accurate in CE conditions than they were in ES conditions, and ERP attention effects were enhanced in amplitude in CE conditions. Conversely, the subjects were slower and less accurate in CH conditions and ERP attention effects were delayed in latency and decreased in amplitude. Clustering effects suggest that the processing of stimuli belonging to the attended stream was promoted and the processing of those falling outside the stream was inhibited. The timing and scalp distribution of clustering-related changes in ERPs suggest that clustering modulates early sensory processing in auditory cortex.  相似文献

Participants respond more quickly to two simultaneously presented target stimuli of two different modalities (redundant targets) than would be predicted from their reaction times to the unimodal targets. To examine the neural correlates of this redundant-target effect, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to auditory, visual, and bimodal standard and target stimuli presented at two locations (left and right of central fixation). Bimodal stimuli were combinations of two standards, two targets, or a standard and a target, presented either from the same or from different locations. Responses generally were faster for bimodal stimuli than for unimodal stimuli and were faster for spatially congruent than for spatially incongruent bimodal events. ERPs to spatially congruent and spatially incongruent bimodal stimuli started to differ over the parietal cortex as early as 160 msec after stimulus onset. The present study suggests that hearing and seeing interact at sensory-processing stages by matching spatial information across modalities.  相似文献

The tuning of auditory spatial attention with respect to interaural level and time difference cues (ILDs and ITDs) was explored using a rhythmic masking release (RMR) procedure. Listeners heard tone sequences defining one of two simple target rhythms, interleaved with arhythmic masking tones, presented over headphones. There were two conditions, which differed only in the ILD of the tones defining the target rhythm: For one condition, ILD was 0 dB and the perceived lateral position was central, and for the other, ILD was 4 dB and the perceived lateral position was to the right; target tone ITD was always zero. For the masking tones, ILD was fixed at 0 dB and ITDs were varied, giving rise to a range of lateral positions determined by ITD. The listeners' task was to attend to and identify the target rhythm. The data showed that target rhythm identification accuracy was low, indicating that maskers were effective, when target and masker shared spatial position, but not when they shared only ITD. A clear implication is that at least within the constraints of the RMR paradigm, overall spatial position, and not ITD, is the substrate for auditory spatial attention.  相似文献

Three experiments examined sequential effects in choice reaction time tasks. On each trial, a right/left positional judgment was made to a either a pure tone or a luminance increment in a visual array of box elements. In the first two experiments, a preparatory signal was presented prior to each imperative signal to indicate the relevant stimulus modality. At a short stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the preparatory and the imperative signal (i.e., 60 msec), subjects were quicker to repeat the same response than to change their response when presented with successive tones, although no such repetition effect occurred on the visual target trials. Subjects were impaired if the stimulus modality changed across successive trials regardless of the modality of the target. At a longer SOA (i.e., 500 msec), these sequential effects were abolished; subjects were assumed to be able to prepare for the relevant modality because of the presentation of the preparatory signal. When the preparatory signals were omitted, in a final experiment, the modality-switching costs were still evident, but now inhibition of return occurred on both the auditory and the visual target trials-subjects were now impaired in responding when the target reappeared at its immediately previous location. It seems, therefore, that the repetition effect and modality-switching effects do dissociate. The data revealed clear differences between orienting attention to a particular spatial locale and focusing attention to a particular sensory modality.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of exogenous spatial attention on auditory information processing. In Experiments 1, 2 and 3, temporal order judgment tasks were performed to examine the effect. In Experiment 1 and 2, a cue tone was presented to either the left or right ear, followed by sequential presentation of two target tones. The subjects judged the order of presentation of the target tones. The results showed that subjects heard both tones simultaneously when the target tone, which was presented on the same side as the cue tone, was presented after the target tone on the opposite side. This indicates that spatial exogenous attention was aroused by the cue tone, and facilitated subsequent auditory information processing. Experiment 3 examined whether both cue position and frequency influence the resulting information processing. The same effect of spatial attention was observed, but the effect of attention to a certain frequency was only partially observed. In Experiment 4, a tone fusion judgment task was performed to examine whether the effect of spatial attention occurred in the initial stages of hearing. The result suggests that the effect occurred in the later stages of hearing.  相似文献

In five experiments, participants made speeded target/nontarget classification responses to singly presented auditory stimuli. Stimuli were defined via vocal identity and location in Experiments 1 and 2 and frequency and location in the remaining experiments. Performance was examined in two conditions inspired by visual search: In the feature condition, responses were based on the detection of unique stimulus features; in the conjunction condition, unique combinations of features were critical. Experiment 1 showed a conjunction benefit, since classifications were faster in the conjunction condition than in the feature condition. Potential confounds were eliminated in Experiments 2 and 3, which resulted in the observation of conjunction costs. In Experiments 4 and 5, we examined, respectively, whether the cost could be explained in terms of differences in interstimulus similarity and target template complexity across the main conditions. Both accounts were refuted. It seems that when the identification of particular feature combinations is necessary, conjunction processing in audition becomes an effortful process.  相似文献

The effects of distractor clustering on target detection were examined in two experiments in which subjects attended to binaural tone bursts of one frequency while ignoring distracting tones of two competing frequencies. The subjects pressed a button in response to occasional target tones of longer duration (Experiment 1) or increased loudness (Experiment 2). In evenly spaced conditions, attended and distractor frequencies differed by 6 and 12 semitones, respectively (e.g., 2096-Hz targets vs. 1482- and 1048-Hz distractors). In clustered conditions, distractor frequencies were grouped; attended tones differed from the distractors by 6 and 7 semitones, respectively (e.g., 2096-Hz targets vs. 1482- and 1400-Hz distractors). The tones were presented in randomized sequences at fixed or random stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). In both experiments, clustering of the unattended frequencies improved the detectability of targets and speeded target reaction times, Similar effects were found at fixed and variable SO As. Results from the analysis of stimulus sequence suggest that clustering improved performance primarily by reducing the interference caused by distractors that immediately preceded the target.  相似文献

An auditory backward recognition masking task (Massaro, 1970) was administered to undergraduates selected for extreme scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the Cattell Culture Fair Intelligence Test. In two experiments, significant group differences were found in threshold interstimulus intervals (ISIs) required for 75% correct tone recognition. High-aptitude subjects required less time for correct identification of target tones as “high” or “low”. They were more able to overcome the constraints imposed on time-dependent information processing by a masking tone. These group differences were interpreted as indicating better information processing efficiency (h (higher signal-to-noise ratio) in the high-aptitude subjects.  相似文献

In this study, we examined whether ventriloquism can rearrange external space on which spatial reflexive attention operates. The task was to judge the elevation (up vs down) of auditory targets delivered in the left or the right periphery, taking no account of side of presentation. Targets were preceded by either auditory, visual, or audiovisual cues to that side. Auditory, but not visual cues had an effect on the speed of auditory target discrimination. On the other hand, a ventriloquized cue, consisting of a tone in central location synchronized with a light flash in the periphery, facilitated responses to targets appearing on the same side as the flash. That effect presumably resulted from the attraction of the apparent location of the tone towards the flash, a well-known manifestation of ventriloquism. Ventriloquism thus can reorganize space in which reflexive attention operates.  相似文献
