The Man Who Could Not Cry and the Psychoanalyst Who Could: Mutual Healing in the Maternal Transference/Countertransference

This is a clinical/theoretical study of mutual healing in the maternal transference/countertransference. Therapist and patient began their work when each was in extreme mourning. I detail sensory, affective transactions between them that proved transformative. I deem these basic to the healing that was unusually rapid. It broke through the patient's dissociation, and the therapist's sorrow. I note that the treatment modalities were similar to those essential to mother/infant bonding. I connect the treatment's transformative effects with those discovered through infant research and studies with the functioning magnetic resonance imagery test (fMRI). All three of these modes of interpersonal study-psychotherapy, infant, and fMRI research-exhibit mind/body imprinting of the mother/infant deeply connected experience.

Where the Whole Thing Fell Apart

Abstract

This article examines the intersection of societal prejudice and psychological trauma. In an instrumental case study created through a layered narrative analysis, the author highlights the potentially traumatic effects of racism and discrimination, while also exploring the phenomenon of resilience in a complex ecological system. The findings suggest that the enduring and continual strain of racial prejudice may cause significant psychological distress, particularly when those experiences reinforce early negative experiences within a family; and that assessments of resilience need to consider the contribution of ecological context to psychological outcomes as well as to an individual's ability to mobilize personal resources when such a context finally shifts.     

Mood-Dependent Cognitive Change in a Man With Bipolar Disorder Who Cycles Every 24 Hours

A case study of a bipolar patient whose mood changes every 24 hours is described to illustrate the changes in cognitive processing and content during different phases of bipolar disorder. The participant completed a battery of questionnaires and tasks on 4 separate occasions: twice when depressed and twice when manic. Depression tended to be associated with the recall of more general and unpleasant autobiographical memories and greater dependence on others as assessed by self-report and behavioral methods. In contrast, mania tended to be associated with more specific and pleasant autobiographical memories, and antidependence. These preliminary findings set the groundwork for further systematic studies of intraindividual variation in cognitive processing in bipolar disorder. The relevance to future research, theory, and clinical practice are discussed.     

The Hooded Man

The Hooded Man Paradox of Eubulides concerns the apparent failure of the substitutivity of identicals in epistemic (and other intentional) contexts. This paper formulates a number of different versions of the paradox and shows how these may be solved using semantics for quantified epistemic logic. In particular, two semantics are given which invalidate substitution, even when rigid designators are involved.

In this article the author recounts a Chinese folktale from the viewpoint of the traveling dream soul, which, according to ancient Chinese understanding, may enter all forms of life. This narrative aims to restore and honor the folktale's ancient roots in the Han dynasty classical Chinese medical model, which included storytelling. Accordingly, the story transmits the psychological and spiritual facets of Chinese medical practice that Chairman Mao had censored. Reconnected with these roots, as shown by the commentary that follows the retelling, this story of a pure-hearted boy's dream offers a physiological and psychological treatment of addiction and accompanying oppressions through a detailed creative movement of compassion that follows the life force.
