I The Confucian Classics and Christian Scriptures speak often about the role "the past" plays in shaping individual and communal character, life, perception, morality and purpose. In both Christianity and classical Confucianism, memory, rite and tradition are each accorded a central place in preserving and interpreting the past as a dynamic force in the present. The first part of this paper studies points of thematic similarity in Christian and Confucian interpretation of memory, rite and tradition. In the second part of the paper, however, critical points of divergence are addressed; for behind the formal similarities lie deeper intellectual, relational and moral differences in understanding the nature and function of "the past" in determining both the present and the future. Comparative literary analysis provides a rich resource for contemporary application of the Confucian Classics and Christian Scriptures to discussion of cultural memory and global harmony. The comparative reading of 'texts' also provides an important point of access for understanding the role literature itself plays in determining the form, content and power of memory, ritual and tradition in both Confucianism and Christianity.

Abstract

This article explores the scope of ‘religion-psy dialogue’ in the mid-twentieth century, via a case study from Japan: Kosawa Heisaku, a Buddhist psychoanalyst based in Tokyo. By putting this case study in brief comparative perspective, with the conversation that took place in 1965 between Paul Tillich and Carl Rogers, the article discusses both the promise and the pitfalls of the modern and contemporary world of ‘religion-psy dialogue’, alongside the means by which specialists in a variety of fields might investigate and hold it to account.

The sacramental and liturgical texts in The Annotated Luther series (volumes 1 and 3) reflect Luther's ongoing concern for the faith life of the people. They also give us an insight into Luther's own struggle to find words (and, of course, practices) that reflect the fundamental insight of the Reformation: justification by faith alone. Luther refused to abandon ritual or a strict liturgical order even though it can so easily become, in the minds and hearts of believers, a work they must do. The freedom of the gospel does not dispense us from a liturgical order or from participation; in fact, for Luther, that freedom compels us to worship! This tension can be found within these writings as Luther searches for new words and redefines and/or reorients other words to express a spirituality of justification.

This study explored the family role expectationsof 14- and 15-year-old Palestinian young men and womenliving in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It wasanticipated that modernization, along with the youth's involvement in the intifada, thepopular uprising against Israeli occupation, hadfostered more liberal family role expectations among theyouth. The data were collected via questionnaire in1994-1995 from all of the ninth grade students attendingUnited Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) schoolsin the West Bank. The students completed the Arabicquestionnaire at school and took home questionnaires for their mothers and their fathers. In Gaza, samples of the ninth grade students attending UNRWAschools and of those attending schools operated by thePalestinian Ministry of Education were selected. The students' response rates were over 90%,while mothers' and fathers' exceeded 80%. Overall, datawere collected from 7,000 Palestinian families. Theresults revealed that, contrary to our expectation, Palestinian youth desire and anticipate havingtraditional families very similar to those of theirparents. Interestingly, intifada participation was notassociated with a decrease in support for traditional family roles. There were significantdifferences between the boys' and girls' perceptions offuture gender roles in Palestinian society. The youngwomen expressed more liberal attitudes towards women's roles and participation in society, while atthe same time supporting traditional familyroles.

This article reviews the long and varied history of Christianity in the country now known as Iran. The historical emphasis is on the Assyrian Church of the East, although other churches are also mentioned. The relationship, successively, with Zoroastrianism and with Islam, as the dominant religious traditions, is discussed, as are its implications for the wider Islamic world. Western contacts with Iran, and, in particular, those of western churches, are also examined. In the light of this historical analysis, and from discussion of the situation since the Islamic Revolution, some conclusions are advanced about the prospects for Christianity in the new contemporary context.
