When a figure moves behind a narrow aperture in an opaque surface, if it is perceived as a figure, its shape will often appear distorted. Under such anorthoscopic conditions, the speed or direction of the object's motion is ambiguous. However, when the observer simultaneously tracks a moving target, a figure is always perceived, and its precise shape is a function of the speed or direction of tracking. The figure is seen as moving with the speed or in the direction of the target. Thus, it is argued that eye movement serves as a cue to the figure's motion, which, in turn, determines its perceived length or orientation.  相似文献

Three studies relating perception of motion to stimulus uncertainty are reported. Generally, detectability declines when the observer is uncertain about the direction in which a target will move, but the visibility loss associated with direction uncertainty can be attenuated if the observer has adequate practice. This attenuation seems to depend upon the observer's ability to switch among directionally selective visual mechanisms in an adaptive fashion. The implications of these findings for models of motion detection are discussed.  相似文献

Precuing an observer as to where a target is more likely to occur in a subsequent visual array can increase the detectability (d′) of a target at that location. This is often attributed to the observer’s increased allocation of some limited cognitive resource (“attention”) to the cued location. Two experiments are reported which are difficult to interpret in this way even though they involve similar cue effects. The first involves postcuing a location well after the array but before the observer responds, so that the cue can influence the response but not the observation. The second involves precuing, but with slow sequential presentation of array elements prior to the response, so the observer need not share any limited resource while processing each element in turn. Enhanced detectability similar to that produced with precues and simultaneous presentation of elements is shown to occur in each experiment. An alternative data-limited (rather than resource-limited) interpretation of these effects is provided by a mathematical model in which the observer integrates equally noisy or degraded internal representations of the array elements, but gives more weight to cued elements in selecting a response. Theoretical parameters of the model are shown to provide separate measures of both an observer’s overall sensitivity and precue effects in cost-benefit analyses of cuing data.  相似文献

Effects of cuing the onset (initial) location of a moving target on memory for the onset location of that target were examined. If a cue presented prior to target onset indicated the location where that target would appear, the onset repulsion effect (in which the judged initial location of the target was displaced in the direction opposite to target motion) was decreased, and the onset repulsion effect was smaller if the cue was valid than if the cue was invalid. If a cue presented during target motion or after the target vanished indicated the location where that target had appeared, the onset repulsion effect was eliminated. The data (1) suggest that positional uncertainty might contribute to the onset repulsion effect, (2) provide the first evidence of an effect of expectancy regarding target trajectory on the onset repulsion effect, and (3) are partially consistent with previous data involving effects of attention and spatial cuing on the Fröhlich effect and on representational momentum.  相似文献

In 1981 Ball and Sekuler showed that a briefly flashed line which primed the subject to the direction of target motion improved the detection of a target. Our aim was to study whether a pointing arrow and random-dot patterns that move in one of four possible directions can prime detection of motion for higher-contrast stimuli. When the motion of a target was primed and the cue validity was 100%, the target's position was more easily detected. Improvement was significant when the direction indicated by the cue and a target's direction were either the same or opposite relative to each other. When the subjects (n = 5 each experiment) did not know the direction of the target before the presentation of the stimulus field, no improvement was found. A discussion of attention to the cue is presented.  相似文献

To determine how the visual system represents information about change in target direction, we studied the detection of such change under conditions of varying stimulus certainty. Target direction was either held constant over trials or was allowed to vary randomly. When target direction was constant the observer could be certain about that stimulus characteristic; randomizing the target direction rendered the observer uncertain. We measured response times (RTs) to changes in target direction following initial trajectories of varying time and distance. In different conditions, the observer was uncertain about either the direction of the initial trajectory, or the direction of change or both. With brief initial trajectories in random directions, uncertainty about initial direction elevated RTs by 50 ms or more. When the initial trajectories were at least 500 ms, this directional uncertainty ceased to affect RTs; then, only uncertainty about the direction of change affected RTs. We discuss the implications of these results for (i) schemes by which the visual system might code directional change; (ii) the visual integration time for directional information; and (iii) adaptational processes in motion perception.  相似文献

Abstract:  The rotation direction and depth order of a rotating sphere consisting of random dots often reverses while it is viewed under orthographic projection. However, if a short viewing distance is simulated under perspective projection, the correct rotation direction can be perceived. There are two motion cues for the rotation direction and depth order. One is the speed cue; points with higher velocities are closer to the observer. The other is the vertical motion cue; vertical motion is induced when the dots recede from or approach the observer. It was examined whether circular motion, which does not have any depth information but induces vertical velocities, masks the vertical motion cue. In Experiment 1, the effects of circular motion on the judgment of the rotation direction of a rotating sphere were examined. The magnitude of the two cues (the speed cue and the vertical velocity cue) as well as the angular speed of circular motion was varied. It was found that the performance improved as the vertical velocity increased and that the speed cue had slight effects on the judgment of the rotation direction. It was also found that the performance worsened as the angular speed of the circular motion was increased. In Experiment 2, the effects of circular motion on depth judgment of a rotating half sphere were investigated. The performance worsened as the angular speed of the circular motion increased, as in Experiment 1. These results suggest that the visual system cannot compensate perfectly for circular motion for the judgment of the rotation direction and depth order.  相似文献

环境中的运动刺激往往多变, 更好的方向感知需要同时依赖当前信息和先验信息。然而, 当前刺激的不确定性与先验线索的预期有效性在运动方向感知决策中如何整合尚不清楚。研究采用随机点运动范式, 要求被试判断散点群的整体运动方向, 方向一致的散点为相干点, 其比例越低, 不确定性越高。实验1比较了不同相干点比例下的感知准确度。根据实验1的结果, 选出20%和60%的相干点比例分别对应实验2中散点群的高、低不确定性水平。实验2比较了高、低不确定性和高、低预期有效性(线索正确预测目标的概率)下的感知准确度。结果发现, 随着不确定性的降低和预期有效性的增加, 感知准确度显著提高; 预期效应(高、低有效性下感知准确度的差异)随不确定性的提高而增加。结果表明, 先验信息与感觉信息能在运动方向感知决策中整合。研究为双重控制机制(DMC)理论下主动性与反应性控制协同工作的观点提供了实证支持, 并为交通事故的解释与预防提供了理论依据。  相似文献

In visual search, items defined by a unique feature are found easily and efficiently. Search for a moving target among stationary distractors is one such efficient search. Search for a stationary target among moving distractors is markedly more difficult. In the experiments reported here, we confirm this finding and further show that searches for a stationary target within a structured flow field are more efficient than searches for stationary targets among distractors moving in random directions. The structured motion fields tested included uniform direction of motion, a radial flow field simulating observer forward motion, and a deformation flow field inconsistent with observer motion. The results using optic flow stimuli were not significantly different from the results obtained with other structured fields of distractors. The results suggest that the local properties of the flow fields rather than global optic flow properties are important for determining the efficiency of search for a stationary target.  相似文献

研究结合线索提示和表征动量范式,实验1、2均采用2有无线索(有线索,无线索)×4诱导期间时距(1250ms,1750ms,2250ms,2750ms)混合实验设计,探讨线索呈现的加工阶段和时距对表征动量的影响。实验1恒定保持间隔时距,在不同时距的诱导期间呈现线索,发现线索主效应不显著,但表征动量呈减小趋势;时距主效应不显著。实验2变化诱导时距,在恒定的保持间隔呈现线索,发生向后偏移现象,线索主效应显著;时距主效应不显著。研究结果表明,随着注意的增加,表征动量效应减小;注意时距不显著影响表征动量,而注意阶段显著影响表征动量。研究结果为表征动量的双加工理论提供了实证支持。  相似文献

When two stationary, stereoscopically separated targets are viewed in a completely dark surround, and no cues concerning their egocentric distances from the observer are salient, the farther target tends to be seen at the same distance it would have assumed if it were by itself. The nearer target is seen as being closer than it would have been if seen alone. The present studies extend this previous finding (now termed thefar-anchor effect) into the domain of targets that move in stereoscopic space. Observers viewed two small illuminated targets, which began at either the same or different stereoscopic distances. One of the targets was moved in depth and the observers identified the target that appeared to move. Conditions varied according to the initial depth location of the moving target. Significantly more correct responses were reported when the nearer target moved than when the farther one moved, consistent with the hypothesis that the perception of motion in depth is affected by the aforementioned perceptual anchoring effect of the farther target.  相似文献

为揭示注意对表征动量的影响机制,我们结合线索提示和表征动量范式,通过两个实验比较高、低相关线索分别在诱导期间与保持间隔呈现对表征动量的影响,结果发现:(1)高相关线索的时间特性主效应不显著,最终位置均发生边缘性的向前偏移。(2)低相关线索呈现在诱导期间时,表征动量显著;呈现在保持间隔时,发生向后偏移。这些表明,随着注意增大,表征动量减小;高相关线索更有利于定位,而低相关线索易受时间特性的影响。研究结果验证表征动量的双加工理论。  相似文献

Using straight translatory motion of a visual peripheral cue in the frontoparallel plane, and probing target discrimination at different positions along the cue's motion trajectory, we found that target orientation discrimination was slower for targets presented at or near the position of motion onset (4.2° off centre), relative to the onset of a static cue (Experiment 1), and relative to targets presented further along the motion trajectory (Experiments 1 and 2). Target discrimination was equally fast and accurate in the moving cue conditions relative to static cue conditions at positions further along the cue's motion trajectory (Experiment 1). Moreover, target orientation discrimination was not slowed at the same position, once this position was no longer the motion onset position (Experiment 3), and performance in a target colour-discrimination task was not slowed even at motion onset (Experiment 4). Finally, we found that the onset location of the motion cue was perceived as being shifted in the direction of the cue's motion (Experiment 5). These results indicate that attention cannot be as quickly or precisely shifted to the onset of a motion stimulus as to other positions on a stimulus’ motion trajectory.  相似文献

The way in which movement enhances target visibility has been investigated by measuring the detectability of the direction of motion of a dot pattern added to a background of dynamic visual noise. When the positions of all the dots were changed randomly from frame to frame, so that there was no dot configuration to define the target area (experiments 1 and 2), the threshold density difference necessary was for direction of motion detection less than 3 dots/frame (between 20% and 50% density difference). The spatial displacement (S) at which optimal detection occurs increased when a target elongated in the direction of motion was used. If S was either larger or smaller than its optimal value, thresholds rose progressively. The rise in threshold when S was smaller than 0.25 deg (the width of the target area) decreased when the target dots had a fixed spatial arrangement (experiment 3). It is suggested that in both fixed and random target configurations there is a grouping of dots with similar trajectories via a global directionally-selective process. The strength of the overall motion signal is greater in the fixed-dot configuration because each target dot has associated with it a vector precisely aligned in the direction of the target motion.  相似文献

Two experiments investigated the ability of subjects to identify a moving, tactile stimulus. In both experiments, the subjects were presented with a target to their left index fingerpad and a nontarget (also moving) to their left middle fingerpad. Subjects were instructed to attend only to the target location and to respond “1” if the stimulus moved either to the left or up the finger, and to respond “2” if the stimulus moved either right or down the finger. The results showed that accuracy was better and reaction times were faster when the target and nontarget moved in the same direction than when they moved in different directions. When the target and nontarget moved in different directions, accuracy was significantly better and reaction times were significantly faster when the two stimuli had the same assigned response than when they had different responses. The results provide support for the conclusion that movement information is processed across adjacent fingers to the level of incipient response activation, even when subjects attempt to focus their attention on one location on the skin.  相似文献

When a moving target vanishes abruptly, participants judge its final position as being ahead of its actual final position, in the direction of motion (representational momentum; Freyd & Finke, 1984). In the present study, we presented illusory motion and examined whether or not forward displacement was affected by the perceived direction and speed of the target. Experiments 1A and 1B showed that an illusory direction of movement of a target was perceived, and Experiment 2 showed that an illusory speed of a moving target was observed. However, neither the direction nor the magnitude of forward displacement was affected by these illusions. Therefore, it was suggested that the mechanism underlying forward displacement (or some extrapolation processing) uses different motion signals than does the perceptual mechanism.  相似文献

When observers are asked to localize the onset or the offset position of a moving target, they typically make localization errors in the direction of movement. Similarly, when observers judge a moving target that is presented in alignment with a flash, the target appears to lead the flash. These errors are known as the Fröhlich effect, representational momentum, and flash-lag effect, respectively. This study compared the size of the three mislocalization errors. In Experiment 1, a flash appeared either simultaneously with the onset, the mid-position, or the offset of the moving target. Observers then judged the position where the moving target was located when the flash appeared. Experiments 2 and 3 are exclusively concerned with localizing the onset and the offset of the moving target. When observers localized the position with respect to the point in time when the flash was presented, a clear mislocalization in the direction of movement was observed at the initial position and the mid-position. In contrast, a mislocalization opposite to movement direction occurred at the final position. When observers were asked to ignore the flash (or when no flash was presented at all), a reduced error (or no error) was observed at the initial position and only a minor error in the direction of the movement occurred at the final position. An integrative model is proposed, which suggests a common underlying mechanism, but emphasizes the specific processing components of the Fröhlich effect, flash-lag effect, and representational momentum.  相似文献
