Perception & Epistemic Entitlement

In this paper we investigate the implications of recent scientific discoveries in animal perception on the philosophical views regarding epistemic entitlement. We show that the predictive processing (PP) model of perception offers new insight into the connection between veridicality and the immediate, instance-individuated perceptual experience; and we argue that the two come apart if we accept that the PP model is on the right track.     

Psychophysics in the field: Perception and memory for labor pain

Separate groups of women estimated the painfulness of labor contractions either immediately (perceptual judgments) or at time intervals varying from 8 to 48 h after their completion (memorial judgments). The pain judgments of individual uterine contractions were related functionally to the biometrically measured magnitude of these contractions. Perceived and remembered painful sensations were related to referent intensities by power functions governed, as a rule, by exponents greater than unity. Exponents for the memory functions were consistently greater than those for the perceptual functions. Psychophysics done in the field can help decide theoretical issues in addition to providing useful practical information.     

Reflections on 30 years of Cognition & Emotion

ABSTRACT

The publication of the first issue of Cognition & Emotion in 1987 helped open the floodgates to what has become a golden age of emotion research in the social and biological sciences. In this article, I describe the intellectual landscape of that era and trace key developments that helped foster the growth of the field of affective science. Looking back from a present-day perspective, I offer some thoughts on the major changes that have occurred over the past three decades, the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, and my own personal journey toward becoming an affective scientist (which largely occurred during this period). Finally, I offer three considerations that might be helpful for young researchers who are already in the field of affective science or are considering entering it.

Radical psychology institutionalized: a history of the Journal Psychologie & Maatschappij [psychology & society

Starting out as a newsletter for radical psychologists, the Dutch journal Psychologie & Maatschappij (Psychology & Society) moved in the past decade toward the theoretical mainstream within psychology. In this paper, the major changes in the journal are described and analyzed, as well as the features that did not change: an emphasis on theory and history, an interdisciplinary approach, and an emphasis on discussion. The main transformations were from psychology as instrumental toward the goals of the progressive movement in the Netherlands, then to extreme criticism of all scientific and professional psychological activities, and finally to adherence to the most advanced approaches within academic psychology.     

Immigration and the metropolis: Reflections on urban history

This article presents an outline of the relationship between migration and the city in its evolution over time. I sketch the central aspects of this historical relation as a prelude to examining three aspects of the contemporary scene: the various determinants of contemporary labour flows; the political sources of resistance to international migration; and the renewed protagonist role of metropolitan areas as strategic nodes of the international system. As part of the latter process, I sketch the rise of transnationalism as a novel form of adaptation to immigration and as a potential response to the overriding logic of global capitalism. Implications of a migration-centred approach to cities for theory and policy are dismissed.     

Psychophysics and the anisotropy of time

In psychophysics, experimental control over the presented stimuli is an important prerequisite. Due to the anisotropy of time, this prerequisite is not given in psychophysical experiments on time perception. Many important factors (e.g., the direction of perceived time flow) cannot be manipulated in timing experiments. The anisotropy of time is a peculiarity, which distinguishes the time dimension from other perceptual qualities.Here I summarize the anisotropy-related differences between the perception of time and the perception of other qualities. It is discussed to what extent these differences might affect results and interpretations in psychophysical experiments. In conclusion, I argue for a ‘view from nowhen’ on the psychophysical study of time perception.
