Women faculty in predominantly male departments at a large university were interviewed and responded to paper-and-pencil instruments in a test of Laws' analysis of the necessity for the „token women” adaptation to their marginality for success in academia. By multiple criteria, three clusters were identified: (a) token women, who accepted academia as a meritocracy, were aware of little sex discrimination and belonged to no feminist group; (b) non-token women, who disagreed with academia as a meritocracy and were aware of sex discrimination; and (c) women with mixed or moderate orientations. (Membership in feminist groups was found in the latter two clusters.) Women in the three clusters did not differ significantly by academic rank or marital status and only marginally by age and longevity in academia. As predicted, however, they did differ by tenure status. Contrary to Laws' analysis, token women were not more likely to have had a sponsor, which was significantly related only to rank. Women in the three clusters were equally accurate in recognizing male-female status discrepancies. Their differing definitions of sex discrimination were revealed in differential bias when choosing among alternatives of indeterminate correctness. Token women minimized such discrepancies, in line with beliefs attributing them to women, rather than the system. Others maximized such discrepancies.

Three experiments examined transfer of learning between a concurrent discrimination and a matching (or non-matching)-to-sample discrimination in rats. In Experiment 1, rats were trained to criterion (group NOT) or were overtrained (group OT) on two concurrent discriminations. Subsequently, group OT learned a matching (or non-matching) task more rapidly than did group NOT. In Experiment 2, rats were initially given matching (or nonmatching) tasks and then given whole or half reversal with these tasks. Group whole reversed faster than group half. In Experiment 3, two groups of rats were trained on matching (or non-matching) tasks, and then given concurrent discrimination training, followed by either whole or half reversal training (groups matching and non-matching). Another group (group control) received a pseudo-discrimination followed by the same training in Phases 2 and 3 as groups matching and non-matching. In groups matching and non-matching, rats learned the whole reversal more rapidly than the half reversal. But the opposite result was observed in group control. These findings suggest that transfer effects reported in Experiments 1 and 2 are governed by the same mechanism for the formation of associations between stimuli. 相似文献

An abbreviated form of the Token Test was administered to 42 normal readers and 42 dyslexic adolescent males. The greatest divergence between the two groups was seen on Part V where syntactic complexity varies. An error analysis also supported the hypothesis that some, but not all, dyslexics have an impaired ability to process syntactic information. The Token Test, particularly Part V, would be a useful aid in the evaluation of dyslexic individuals. 相似文献

Attention is drawn to the relatively high rate of breakdown of token economy programmes, and the reasons for this are considered. Reference is made to the results of a questionnaire circulated to British token economy programmes. Reasons for breakdown are considered in five categories, these being: nonexistent or poor patient selection; inadequate selection and training of nursing and ward staff; lack of definition of the functions of the supervising psychologist; poor co-operation from, and communication with, administrative staff; and active interference by the community. Solutions to these problems are suggested. The value of alternative or additional theoretical frameworks in promoting positive control of token systems is discussed. 相似文献

A token economy program conducted with severely regressed, “backward” state hospital patients is described. An evaluation of the effects of the reinforcement program after one year has revealed substantial gains in patient eating, grooming, and dressing behavior and involvement in activities on and off the ward. In addition, several measures of staff attitudes toward patients evidence meaningful gains in staff expectations about the treatability of patients and the degree of the latters' psychological deficit. 相似文献

The research of Young, MacKenzie, & Sherif (1980), designed to test Laws' (1975) analysis of token women in academia, is criticized on several methodological and conceptual grounds. The appropriateness of the study as a test of Laws' theory is questioned since no evidence is offered for the validity of the independent variables as measures of tokenism. E. J. Lowe argues that the mental event token cannot be identical to the complex neural event token for they have different counterfactual properties. If the mental event had not occurred, the behavior would not have ensued, while if the neural event had not occurred, the behavior would have ensued albeit slightly differently. Lowe's argument for the neural counterfactual relies on standard possible world semantics, whose evaluation of such counterfactuals is problematic. His argument for the mental counterfactual relies on a premise that is plausibly false. My arguments support other counterfactuals, which are consistent with identity theories. 相似文献

Comprehension of connected language as assessed by the Revised Token Test (RTT) was studied in 17 children with left hemisphere lesions (LL) and 11 with right hemisphere lesions (RL). LL children's significantly lower performance on several subtests than left controls (LC) matched by age, sex, race, and social class appeared to be related to the memory demands of these subtests rather than the limited syntactic elements assessed by the RTT. LL subjects requested significantly more command repetitions than control or RL subjects and when a repetition was not requested LL subjects often responded with immediacy. Although RL children tended to perform lower than right matched controls (RC), these differences were not significant nor readily related to either the memory or specific linguistic structures assessed. RL subjects required fewer command repetitions than LL subjects and exhibited a significantly greater frequency of immediate responses than controls or LL subjects. While based on few children, a trend for LL children with retrorolandic lesions to perform more poorly than those with left prerolandic lesions was suggested. No systematic difference in performance was apparent for children with left cortical vs. left subcortical lesions or among discrete sites of lesions within the right hemisphere. Children with left lesions prior to 1 year of age performed no better and, in several instances, significantly poorer than LL patients sustaining lesions after 1 year of age. Among RL subjects, those sustaining lesions after 1 year of age had greater difficulty than those with lesion onset before 1 year of age, especially on linguistic elements which seemed to be dependent upon visual spatial properties. Further studies are needed to evaluate the comprehension of more complex linguistic structures among children with unilateral brain lesions as well as to study the role of more basic factors such as memory and attention in explaining the present findings. 相似文献

This article makes an important distinction between two definitions of token woman. In the first definition, a token woman is one of few women in a predominantly male setting. The second meaning of Token Woman identifies that subset of such women who have made the distinctive psychological adaptation described by Laws (1975). The methodological decisions in Young, MacKenzie, and Sherif's (1980) research are justified as based on that definitional distinction. Constantinople's critique is shown to be appropriate as an alternative to Laws' theory, but not as a criticism of our research. Alternative generational explanations for previous findings about Token Women are not supported by existing data. 相似文献

This study examined the work experiences of men, a traditional workplace majority, as minority members of a female-dominated occupation. We used tokenism and social categorization theories to propose and test a set of hypotheses that link token status (a less than 15% minority) with male flight attendants' work attitudes through intervening psychological and job factors. Survey data from a sample of 236 male and female flight attendants supported a model in which a negative relationship between token status and the work attitudes of job satisfaction and organizational attachment was mediated by low self-esteem, increased role ambiguity, and poor job fit. The uncovering of these previously unmeasured intervening variables strengthens theoretical connections between demography and work outcomes and suggests leverage points for improving the work attitudes of individuals in the minority. 相似文献
