Observers attempted to detect a weak auditory signal presented in noise. The onset of the signal was determined by a Poisson process, and only responses occurring 1 sec after signal onset were considered detections. Three latency distributions were measured, the time to a signal onset, the reaction time distribution, and the false-alarm distribution (of responses occurring before a signal onset). A simple two-state model is proposed to account for a discrepancy between the distribution of signal waits and the distribution of false alarms. The hazard functions of the reaction time distributions are considered in detail and a simple accumulation model is proposed to account for the results.  相似文献

It has previously been claimed that the Müller-Lyer illusion is the result of low-pass spatial filtering. One way to understand this would be that the distribution of amplitudes is what generates this illusion. This possibility was investigated by computing the 2-D Fourier transforms of the two Müller-Lyer stimuli and extracting their phase and amplitude spectra. These spectra were combined to create hybrid spectra having the phase of one Müller-Lyer figure and the amplitudes of the other. Images were then created by computing the inverse Fourier transform of the hybrid spectra. Except in cases where the analysis was performed patchwise on very small patches, the figures generated with the phase spectrum of the stimuli having outward-pointing fins appear the longer. This was also the case when stimuli were generated with flat amplitude spectra. Because they show that the Müller-Lyer illusion does not depend on any particular distribution of amplitudes, these demonstrations do not support the theory that the Müller-Lyer illusion is the result of low-frequency filtering.  相似文献

A forced-choice reaction time (RT) task was used to assess developmental changes in filtering and the concomitant ability to narrow the focus of the attentional lens. Participants included 20 children in each of four age groups (4, 5, 7, and 9 years), as well as 20 adults between the ages of 21 and 29 years. Conditions varied with regard to the presence or absence of distractors and their proximity to a target stimulus, and the presence or absence of a visual window within which the target stimulus was presented. Age-related differences in the ability to filter task-irrelevant stimuli were found. The performance of 4-year-old children was adversely affected with the presence of distractors located at both 5.7° and 0.95° of visual angle from target stimuli, whereas that of children aged 5, 7, and 9 was negatively affected only with distractors 0.95° of visual angle from the target. Adults' performance was not adversely affected by the presence of distractors. Developmental differences in focusing attention were further highlighted by the finding that the presence of a visual window cue was only associated with faster RTs among 4-year-old children. These results are discussed in terms of the zoom-lens metaphor of visual attention, and the development of the ability to vary the size of an attentive zoom-lens in response to task requirements.  相似文献

Phase congruency: A low-level image invariant   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Phase congruency is a low-level invariant property of image features. Interest in low-level image invariants has been limited. This is surprising, considering the fundamental importance of being able to obtain reliable results from low-level image operations in order to successfully perform any higher level operations. However, an impediment to the use of phase congruency to detect features has been its sensitivity to noise. This paper extends the theory behind the calculation of phase congruency in a number of ways. An effective method of noise compensation is presented that only assumes that the noise power spectrum is approximately constant. Problems with the localization of features are addressed by introducing a new, more sensitive measure of phase congruency. The existing theory that has been developed for 1D signals is extended to allow the calculation of phase congruency in 2D images. Finally, it is argued that high-pass filtering should be used to obtain image information at different scales. With this approach, the choice of scale only affects the relative significance of features without degrading their localization.

Experiment I measured reaction time (RT) to monaural tones of six frequencies presented along with white noise to the contralateral ear. RT with the hand ipsilateral to the stimulus was an average of 9.63 msec faster than RT with the contralateral hand. Contralateral RT was significantly affected by the stimulus frequency. Experiment II measured ipsilateral and contralateral RT to monaural tones with and without contralateral noise. Noise-on results agreed with the results of Experiment I, while noise-off results showed no difference between ipsilateral and contralateral RT. No right-ear advantage was found. The ipsilateral-contralateral RT difference found with noise on is interpreted as being due to callosal transmission time as well as other factors. The finding of no right-ear advantage is discussed in relation to other studies which did report a right-ear advantage.  相似文献

Two experiments are reported in which human performance was compared under continuous 90 dB. white noise, after loss of sleep, under a combination of the two and under appropriate control conditions. The results suggest that noise is effective in reducing the deterioration in performance, characteristic of loss of sleep. The relevance of the result to the arousal theory of loss of sleep is discussed.  相似文献

The way external factors influence distribution functions for the overall time required to perform a mental task (such as responding to a stimulus, or solving a problem) may be informative as to the underlying mental architecture, the hypothetical network of interconnected processes some of which are selectively influenced by some of the external factors. Under the assumption that all processes contributing to the overall performance time are stochastically independent, several basic results have been previously established. These results relate patterns of response time distribution functions produced by manipulating external factors to such questions as whether the hypothetical constituent processes in the mental architecture enter AND gates or OR gates, and whether pairs of processes are sequential or concurrent. The present study shows that all these results are also valid for stochastically interdependent component times, provided the selective dependence of these components upon external factors is understood within the framework of a recently proposed theory of selective influence. According to this theory each component is representable as a function of three arguments: the factor set selectively influencing it, a component-specific source of randomness, and a source of randomness shared by all the components.  相似文献

The rechecking and external-noise postulates of Krueger’s (1978) noisy-operator theory were examined in three letter-matching experiments. Rechecking was tested by varying exposure duration, both without (Experiment 1) and with (Experiment 2) a subsequent noise mask. Predictions of a decreasedsame-different reaction time disparity and an increase in falsedifferent errors at brief exposures were not borne out. The external-noise postulate was tested by varying the degree of heterogeneity of difference between letter sets. The prediction of a smallersamedifferent reaction time disparity for the more heterogeneous letter set was not obtained. Thus, the results did not support internal noise as the basis of thesame-different disparity, but were more consistent with response-inhibition accounts.  相似文献

A theory of choice reaction time ICRT is presented which is based on a variable criterion model assuming the decision criterion to be normally distributed. The theory provides functions of time describing the growth of component processes following stimulus onset. For correct responses, these processes are sensory and associative strength. For errors, the processes are sensory strength, generalized associative strength, and associative inhibition. A model for separating the effects of these processes from that of response competition is presented. The theory describes, with great accuracy, the CRT distributions of correct responses and errors, not only for the experiment for which it was derived, but also for a second experiment in which the criterion was experimentally manipulated. It accounts for the basic facts of the speed-accuracy tradeoff, not only with respect to the two experiments with different speed requirements, but also with respect to the variation of speed over trials within each experiment. While derived from group data, the theory also describes the performance of individual subjects. The mean and variability of the criterion distribution and the ability to utilize associative inhibition are identified as the major sources of individual differences. Methodological problems involved in the scaling analysis of group data are also discussed.  相似文献

If face images are degraded by block averaging, there is a nonlinear decline in recognition accuracy as block size increases, suggesting that identification requires a critical minimum range of object spatial frequencies. The identification of faces was measured with equivalent Fourier low-pass filtering and block averaging preserving the same information and with high-pass transformations. In Experiment 1, accuracy declined and response time increased in a significant nonlinear manner in all cases as the spatial-frequency range was reduced. However, it did so at a faster rate for the quantized and high-passed images. A second experiment controlled for the differences in the contrast of the high-pass faces and found a reduced but significant and nonlinear decline in performance as the spatial-frequency range was reduced. These data suggest that face identification is preferentially supported by a band of spatial frequencies of approximately 8-16 cycles per face; contrast or line-based explanations were found to be inadequate. The data are discussed in terms of current models of face identification.  相似文献

A general approach to time domain digital filtering is described, and examples of some filters used in EEG/ERP research are presented. Simulations are reported that evaluate the impact of the relative length of the filter weight series and the signal cycle to be filtered, the span and real-time density of the filter weights, and slow drift across the epoch being filtered. Results indicate that some filters commonly used in the EEG/ERP literature are inadequate. Frequency domain digital filtering is also briefly discussed. The fast Hartley transform, a fast but relatively unknown computational method for frequency domain filtering of ERP/EEG data, is introduced and compared with time domain filtering. Some practical recommendations are provided.  相似文献

Phenomena that vary over time can often be represented as a complex waveform. Fourier analysis decomposes this complex wave into a set of sinusoidal component waves. In some phenomena, the amplitude of these waves varies in inverse relation to frequency. This pattern has been called 1/f noise and, unlike white noise, it reflects nonrandom variation. Latencies in simple computer tasks typically reveal 1/f noise, but the magnitude of the noise decreases as tasks become more challenging. The current work hypothesizes a correspondence between 1/f noise and effort, leading to the prediction that increasing effort will reduce 1/f noise. In 2 studies, the author examined the relationship between an individual's attempts to avoid bias (measured in Study 1, manipulated in Study 2) and 1/f noise in implicit measures of stereotyping and prejudice. In each study, participants who made an effort to modulate the use of racial information showed less 1/f noise than did participants who made less effort. The potential value of this analytic approach to social psychology is discussed.  相似文献

The impact of a 80 dB(A) intermittent broadband noise on a three-choice visual reaction time (RT) task was investigated. There were 2661 subjects who represented the healthy Finnish population from the age of 30 to 79 years. Noise slowed down the response speed highly significantly but the main effect was negligible in the psychological sense (513 vs. 506 msec). The performance of the elderly was more affected than that of the young. Slow responders did not show any detrimental effect of noise irrespective of whether or not they committed errors. The results are discussed in terms of person-induced ways to perform and cope under a mild stress.  相似文献

What is the time course of human attention in a simple auditory detection task? To investigate this question, we determined the detectability of a 20-msec, 1000-Hz tone presented at expected and unexpected times. Twelve listeners who expected the tone to occur at a specific time after a 300-msec narrowband noise rarely detected signals presented 150-375 msec before or 100-200 msec after that expected time. The shape of this temporal-attention window depended on the expected presentation time of the tone and the temporal markers available in the trials. Further, though expecting the signal to occur in silence, listeners often detected signals presented at unexpected times during the noise. Combined with previous data, these results further clarify the listening strategy humans use when trying to detect an expected sound: Humans seem to listen specifically for that sound, while ignoring the background in which it is presented, around the time when the sound is expected to occur.  相似文献

Temporal preparation was assessed in 15 Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, 20 persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 28 healthy older adults. Participants completed a simple reaction time task in which the preparatory interval duration varied randomly within two blocks (short versus long temporal window). Results indicated that AD and MCI patients had difficulty preparing for the shortest preparatory interval of the short temporal window. AD and MCI patients also had difficulty maintaining an optimal level of preparation up to 5 s within the short temporal window. These results suggest that AD and MCI patients might show difficulty preparing for rapidly occurring events and maintaining preparation over time. This phenomenon should be considered when using reaction time measures with such patients.  相似文献

Control or control-belief is often viewed as being directly instrumental in facilitating coping mechanisms in aversive situations, and yet the empirical evidence for the beneficial effects of control is inconclusive. In this study we investigated the role of predictability in determining the effects of perceived control during an aversive reaction time task. Fifty-six subjects were allocated to one of four groups; predictable-control, predictable-no control, unpredictable-control, unpredictable-no control. In the predictable conditions, subjects could temporally predict the occurrence of an aversive noise. In the perceived control conditions, duration of the aversive tone was contingent on subject’s performance. All subjects were matched in terms of the nature of the task and in the number and time of receipt of both the warning signal and noise. Heart rate reactivity and two performance parameters were measured, reaction time and performance increase. Both predictability and control-belief led to a reduction in heart rate reactivity, although they appeared to function independently and at different points in the sequence of events. That is, predictability or perceived control was sufficient to mitigate the effects, of an aversive situation. Neither perception of control or predictability led to better task performance. These results are discussed in terms of behavioural uncertainty explanations.  相似文献

Contemporary psychophysical procedures were employed to determine the nature of the process for detecting rectangular electrical pulses delivered to the skin. Earlier experiments had shown that the somatosensory system is exceedingly responsive to small changes in the energy of an electrocutaneous stimulus, suggesting that sensory noise may be relatively unimportant in this modality. However, a rating scale study showed that both the high-threshold theory and Luce’s low-threshold theory cannot describe the detection process. The form of the ROC curve is consistent with a signal-detection model that assumes a greater variance for the signal plus noise distribution than for the noise distribution. Additional support for signal detection theory came from an experiment that examined the likelihood of a correct second choke when the first was incorrect in a four-alternative forced-choice paradigm. Therefore, the sensory excitation caused by internal noise can sometimes be greater than the excitation produced by an added stimulus. Electrocutaneous detection differs from auditory or visual in that d’ increases at a greater rate as stimulus intensity changes.  相似文献

Summary A theoretical extension of Zwislocki's theory of temporal summation in hearing predicts that the growth of auditory sensation is faster than its decay. Hence the reaction time to the start of a tone ought to be faster than that to its end. Two experiments which investigated this hypothesis are described. Both experiments measured the reaction times of subjects to the start and end of an imperfectly detectable 1000-Hz tone embedded in continuous noise. All three subjects in Experiment I and three of four subjects in Experiment II revealed reaction-time differences in the expected direction; that is to say, the reaction time to the start of the tone was faster than that to its end. One subject in Experiment II did not show this difference, however, and this subject's anomalous behaviour is seen as a qualification to the general nature of the theory. This research was supported by a grant to R.J. The ratings of discomfort from a wide variety of images can be predicted from the energy at different spatial scales in the image, as measured by the Fourier amplitude spectrum of the luminance. Whereas comfortable images show the regression of Fourier amplitude against spatial frequency common in natural scenes, uncomfortable images show a regression with disproportionately greater amplitude at spatial frequencies within two octaves of 3 cycles deg(-1). In six studies, the amplitude in this spatial frequency range relative to that elsewhere in the spectrum explains variance in judgments of discomfort from art, from images constructed from filtered noise, and from art in which the phase or amplitude spectra have been altered. Striped patterns with spatial frequency within the above range are known to be uncomfortable and capable of provoking headaches and seizures in susceptible persons. The present findings show for the first time that, even in more complex images, the energy in this spatial-frequency range is associated with aversion. We propose a simple measurement that can predict aversion to those works of art that have reached the national media because of negative public reaction.  相似文献
