We have studied the effects of acute and chronic noise on serum levels of pituitary hormones in male Wistar rats. Acute noise increased serum levels of corticosterone, prolactin, and luteinizing hormone and decreased serum GH. FSH was unaffected by this stressor. Chronic noise did not modify basal levels of any hormone studied, however responsiveness of some hormones to the same stimuli was altered. Reduced corticosterone, prolactin, and GH responses to noise was observed after previous chronic exposure to this stimuli. LH response followed the same pattern although it did not reach statistical significance. It might be concluded that adaptation to a repeated stress stimulus is not confined to the pituitary-adrenal axis, however, the degree of adaptation could vary between different hormones.  相似文献

Female golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) which have actively terminated mating with one male will respond in succession to two or more novel males. However, mating with the first male results in a reduction in receptivity shown toward a second male, with the size of the decrease being proportional to the amount of copulatory stimuli provided by the first male. Furthermore, the decreased receptivity shown toward the second male results in his achieving fewer ejaculations. These effects are more pronounced when the second mating occurs 5 min or 8 h after the first mating than when it occurs 1 or 4 h later, suggesting both short-term and long-term inhibitory effects. Copulation with a single male also effects a 40% shortening of behavioral receptivity. In a promiscuous species such as the hamster, prolonged copulation by the male may enhance the short-term inhibition of female receptivity, thereby reducing the risk of subsequent sperm displacement. The long-term effect occurs too late to affect sperm competition and may, instead, function to reduce the risk of predation as a result of unnecessary further mating.  相似文献

Estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) are both required for induction of sexual behavior in female rats under physiological conditions. Administration of E2 in brief pulses can induce the behavior in ovariectomized rats. P does not normally exert inhibitory or anti-estrogenic effects on the behavior. The decline of sexual receptivity in ovariectomized E2+P-treated rats is dependent upon the amount of E2 and P given but independent on the continued presence of either hormone. Ovariectomized animals treated with a constant amount of E2 show a behavioral rhythm which is disrupted by hypothalamic lesions and it is suggested that peptidergic neurons in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus rhythmically inhibit the behavior of ovariectomized E2-treated rats.  相似文献

Estrogen is frequently prescribed as a method of birth control and as hormone replacement therapy for post-menopausal women with varied effects on cognition. Here the effects of estrogen on attention were examined using the latent inhibition (LI) behavioral paradigm. Ovariectomized (OVX) female rats were given either estrogen benzoate (EB, 10 or 100 microg/ml/kg; SC) or sesame oil vehicle. Males and OVX females receiving vehicle displayed normal LI. In contrast, LI was abolished in OVX females receiving EB. The lack of LI in OVX females receiving EB was a result of low suppression ratios, reflecting strong conditioning between the tone and the shock in these subjects even if they were pre-exposed to the tone. Thus, estrogen impaired the ability of OVX females to ignore irrelevant stimuli. Since different cognitive tasks vary in their required ability to ignore irrelevant stimuli, these results may account for some of the variations in the current literature on estrogen and cognition.  相似文献

Daily administration of estradiol benzoate stimulated significantly less lordotic behavior in rats during the second half of pregnancy than in ovariectomized females that received subcutaneous progesterone implants, pituitary grafts that raised plasma prolactin, or both treatments combined. Following an initial facilitation of receptivity, females with progesterone implants showed only moderate reductions in lordosis quotients over 3 test days. The capacity of plasma from pregnant rats to bind estradiol was found to increase significantly during the second half of pregnancy. However, daily administration to pregnant rats of a synthetic estrogen, R 2858, which is not bound by plasma protein, was no more effective than estradiol benzoate in stimulating receptive behavior. Administration of estradiol benzoate also stimulated significantly lower levels of sexual behavior in pregnant females than in females in which pseudopregnancy had been prolonged by previous hysterectomy or induction of uterine decidualization. These findings suggest that some endocrine factor other than progesterone, prolactin, or estradiol-binding protein is primarily responsible for the potent suppression of behavioral responsiveness to estrogen which occurs in pregnant rats. It is suggested that 5 alpha-reduced androgens may cause these behavioral effects.  相似文献

The lordosis duration of the female golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) in response to novel and familiar mating partners was examined. In Experiment 1, females mated to the point of sexual satiation with one male hamster, and following its removal, showed renewed receptivity in response to the introduction of a second male. Upon sexual satiation with the second male, females either received a novel third male or were reexposed to the original male. Total lordosis duration in the third bout in the group receiving a novel male was significantly greater than in the group reexposed to the original male. In Experiment 2, the insertion of a 1-h delay between the second and the third mating partner had no effect on the female's responsiveness, regardless of whether the third male was the original male or a novel male. In Experiment 3, removal of the ovaries followed by hormone replacement treatment (40 micrograms estradiol benzoate, 72 h prior to testing, and 500 micrograms progesterone, 4 h prior to testing) failed to alter the females' ability to discriminate between novel and familiar mating partners. These results demonstrate that females make clear discriminations among individual mating partners, that this can affect sexual receptivity and will continue to do so following a delay of at least 1 h, and that the effect is not mediated by the release of ovarian steroids.  相似文献

Although there is evidence that estradiol has effects in women and in animal models to reduce anxiety and depressive behavior and enhance performance in some cognitive tasks, this is not seen among all individuals. Given the interaction between estradiol and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function, we hypothesized that an individual's prior exposure to stress may mitigate some of the subsequent effects of estradiol. To address this, rats were exposed to gestational stress, or not, to determine if stress exposure during development alters behavioral responses to estradiol in adulthood. If estradiol's effects on anxiety and cognitive behavior are modulated by prior stress experience, then gestationally-stressed rats administered estradiol should have decreased anti-anxiety (open field, elevated plus maze) behavior and cognitive performance in the inhibitory avoidance task. Offspring of dams that were exposed to restraint stress daily on gestational days 14-20, or no such manipulation, were used as adults either intact in behavioral estrus (high estradiol) or diestrus (low estradiol), or ovariectomized (OVX) with empty or estradiol-containing silastic implants. Rats were used for blood collection to determine plasma corticosterone and estradiol concentrations, or were used for behavioral testing. Compared with rats in diestrus or OVX and vehicle-replaced, rats in behavioral estrus and OVX rats with estradiol implants had higher estradiol concentrations, entered more central squares in an open field, spent more time on the open arms of the plus maze, and had a longer latency to crossover to the dark, shock-associated side of the inhibitory avoidance chamber. Gestational stress increased plasma corticosterone but not estradiol levels, decreased plus maze open arm time in cycling rats, and decreased inhibitory avoidance performance. Thus, estradiol and gestational stress can have opposite effects on anxiety and inhibitory avoidance performance.  相似文献

Despite extensive research, the mechanisms by which stress affects reproduction are unknown. Activation of stress systems could potentially influence reproduction at any level of the hypothalamo-pituitary gonadal axis. Nonetheless, the predominant impact is on the secretion of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) from the brain and the secretion of the gonadotrophins, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), from the gonadotrophs of the anterior pituitary gland. When stress is prolonged, it is likely that secretion of the gonadotrophins will be suppressed but the effects of acute stress or repeated acute stress are not clear. Different stressors activate different pathways for varying durations, and the actions of stress vary with sex and are influenced by the predominance of particular sex steroids in the circulation. The mechanisms by which stress influences reproduction are likely to involve complex interactions between a number of central and peripheral pathways and may be different in males and females. To understand these mechanisms, it is important to determine the stress pathways that are activated by particular stressors and to establish how these pathways affect the secretion and actions of GnRH. Furthermore, there is a need to know how stress influences the feedback actions of gonadal steroids and inhibin.  相似文献

The present work examined predicted relations among Life History strategies, Executive Functions, socially antagonistic attitudes, socially antagonistic behaviors, and general intelligence. Life History (LH) theory predicts that Executive Functions and socially antagonistic attitudes and behaviors underpin an interrelated and coherent set of behavioral strategies (LH strategies) designed to enhance reproductive success. Specifically, LH theory predicts a positive relation between Executive Functioning and LH strategies; a negative relation between socially antagonistic attitudes and behaviors and LH strategies; and that Executive Functions mediate relations among LH strategies and socially antagonistic attitudes and behaviors. Results from a Structural Equation Model (SEM), based on self-reported Life History strategies, Executive Functioning, socially antagonistic attitudes and behaviors, and general intelligence support these predictions. The structure of the model suggests that Executive Functions serve a mediating role in the relations between LH strategy and social deviance.  相似文献

Sexual receptivity to males resulted from stimulation of the vagina with a glass rod in previously unreceptive ovariectomized, estrogen-treated rats. Several minutes of rejection behavior preceded the receptivity. In a second study, manual palpation was used to determine the duration of the lordosis response facilitation. Initially, all females were unresponsive to manual flank-perineum stimulation (palpation). Vaginal stimulation plus palpation, which together elicit lordosis, facilitated subsequent lordosis responses to palpation. This effect persisted for several hours after the vaginal stimulation was applied. Vaginal stimulation alone, which was ineffective in eliciting lordosis, also facilitated lordosis in response to subsequent palpation. Repeated palpation did not facilitate lordosis. These prolonged effects were independent of hormone treatment.  相似文献

The potentiation of masculine copulatory behavior in castrated male rats following systemic para-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) treatment was found to be dependent upon the strain of rat and the recency of castration. Wistar (W) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) males displayed a decline in behavioral responsiveness to PCPA treatment following castration, the W males retaining their behavioral responsiveness longer than SD males. Castrated W males were also behaviorally more responsive to androgen replacement than were SD males. Ovariectomized W and SD females receiving estrogen replacement displayed a strain difference in hormonal sensitivity. In tests for feminine copulatory behavior, ovariectomized W females were behaviorally more sensitive to estrogen treatment than SD females. Ovariectomized and estrogen-primed females of both strains displayed potentiated lordotic behavior following chronic PCPA treatment. Concomitant treatment with dexamethasone to reduce adrenal steroid output abolished the potentiation of lordotic behavior found with PCPA treatment.  相似文献

The present series of experiments examined whether the medial preoptic area (MPOA) is involved in the onset of maternal behavior in the rat. Previously, the MPOA had been shown to be important in the maintenance of maternal behavior in the lactating rat. The first experiment investigated whether estradiol benzoate (EB) acts on the MPOA to facilitate the onset of maternal behavior in the 16-day pregnant, hysterectomized, and ovariectomized female rat. Such rats when given EB implants in the MPOA had significantly shorter latencies for the onset of maternal behavior than had females implanted with cholesterol in the MPOA or with EB in the ventromedial hypothalamus, in mammillary bodies, or under the skin. A second experiment showed that estrogen-induced prolactin release was not involved in this facilitation. A third experiment indicated that MPOA lesions disrupt the onset of maternal behavior that is induced by pup stimulation in virgin females. It was concluded that the MPOA is involved not only in the maintenance of maternal behavior but in the hormonally mediated onset of maternal behavior and the onset of maternal behavior induced in virgin females by pup stimulation.  相似文献

Sex differences in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function were examined in gonadectomized male and female rats given equivalent sex hormone replacement regimens either using subcutaneous silastic implants (Experiment 1) or cannula implants in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) (Experiment 2) containing either dihydrotestosterone (DHT), testosterone propionate (TP), estradiol benzoate (EB), or left empty (control). Plasma was obtained before and after 20 min of restraint stress to determine plasma ACTH, corticosterone, and CBG levels as measures of HPA function. Consistent with the literature, androgens decreased, and estrogen increased these measures of HPA function, although peripheral implants were more effective than MPOA implants. Gonadectomy and sex hormone treatment did not eliminate sex differences; overall, females had higher levels than males on measures of HPA function. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) indicated interactions of sex and sex hormone treatment on CBG levels and post-stress corticosterone levels in Expt. 1. The results suggest that sexual dimorphisms influence HPA function even when males and females are given equivalent physiological doses of gonadal steroids, and that the relevant sexual dimorphisms involve both the periphery and the CNS.  相似文献

Plasma levels of testosterone (T), luteinizing hormone (LH), and cortisol were measured in 10 adult male rhesus monkeys before and shortly after coitus. Mean levels of T and LH did not increase significantly after coitus or in control (no ejaculation) tests, but cortisol levels did in both cases. In 10 different males, no significant change was found in the plasma levels of T after electroejaculation; but in control tests (electric current withheld), the mean level of T was significantly lower at 80 and 140 min, but not at 50 min, after the test. According to present evidence, the effect of ejaculation on T levels differs in primate and nonprimate species. The effects on T levels produced by living with sexually receptive female rhesus monkeys may differ from those produced by intimate but brief contact with them.  相似文献

主动母性行为是雌性哺乳动物在哺乳期内有效照料幼崽的一种动机行为, 对幼崽的生存和行为发展有重要影响。证据显示, 啮齿动物的主动母性行为会经历从产后早期的发动和维持到晚期衰退的动态改变, 反映了雌鼠对幼崽奖赏价值阶段性变化的适应; 这一过程不仅涉及分娩激素事件开启下丘脑内侧视前区(MPOA)-中脑腹侧被盖(VTA)-伏隔核(NA)-腹侧苍白球(VP)通路, 还需要杏仁核基底外侧核(BLA)和内侧前额皮层(MPFC)等脑区对上述通路进行实时调节。哺乳期主动母性行为动态改变及其神经机制的研究, 可以加深对行为进化和早期发展的认识, 也对人类母亲产后抑郁等临床问题的干预有借鉴意义。本文首先利用条件化位置偏好(CPP)任务的行为学证据分析幼崽奖赏价值与主动母性行为动态改变的关系; 然后系统阐述调控这一动态改变的神经机制; 最后对未来需要研究的一些重要问题或方向进行探讨。  相似文献

The effects of prepubertal social contact and postpubertal mating experience on sexual behavior were examined in male and female brown lemmings (Lemmus sibiricus). Subjects of both sexes were either isolated at weaning (18 days) or then housed with siblings for another 10 days before being isolated. Before testing for sexual behavior at the age of 75 days, half of each group of males received a series of exposures to estrous females and half of each group of females was housed with a stud male. The results of mating tests indicated that whereas prior sexual experience facilitated subsequent copulatory behavior in both sexes, prepubertal interactions subsequently facilitated contact social and sexual behavior in males but did not increase the behavioral scores of females, which engaged in high levels of sexual behavior regardless of prepubertal experience. The effect of prior copulatory activity on male sexual performance could not be attributed to increasing age (i.e., maturational processes) because the behavior of males tested once but at different ages did not differ appreciably. Prepubertal social interaction appeared to predispose males to benefit from sexual experience later in life.  相似文献

We investigated sensory and behavioral responsiveness of the rat fetus. On Days 19, 20, or 21 of gestation, rat fetuses received intraoral infusions of a biologically important stimulus, milk, or a novel chemical stimulus, lemon. Using a technique to directly observe behavior in utero, we found that rat fetuses discriminate between intraoral infusions of milk and lemon, exhibiting different levels and patterns of overall activity after infusion. Milk was found to evoke a low magnitude, delayed increase in overall fetal activity from Day 19 through Day 21, whereas lemon evoked a high-magnitude, spiked pattern of activity that diminished from Day 19 to Day 21. Late in gestation these two stimuli elicited species-typical action patterns. Milk infusions elicited a stretch response much like the one shown by pups at the nipple; lemon infusions elicited face wiping typical of older pups and adults exposed to aversive gustatory stimuli.  相似文献

Estrous behavior in rodents is triggered by the binding of progesterone (P) to its intracellular receptor (PR). Non-steroidal agents (i.e., gonadotropin-releasing hormone, noradrenaline, dopamine and others), acting at the membrane, can facilitate estrous behavior in estrogen-primed rats. This action is mediated through the generation of second messengers (cyclic AMP, cyclic GMP, calcium) which, in turn, phosphorylate through diverse kinase systems (protein kinases A, G or C) either the PR or associated effector proteins linking the PR to the trans-activation machinery. P or its metabolites also activate cyclic AMP-signaling pathways by acting directly on the membrane or by modulating neurotransmitter release. Molecular processes resulting from second messenger signaling pathways and those from the progesterone-RP interaction synergize to elicit a full behavioral response.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Although the effects of hormone therapy on cardiovascular risk factors and bone metabolism have been studied, data are lacking on the gonadotropin profile after gonadectomy in the sex reassignment process (SRP). Accordingly, whether measurement of the gonadotropin profile is useful in order to adjust the postsurgical dose of gonadal hormones is unknown. We studied the evolution of LH, FSH, prolactin, testosterone, and estradiol in 50 transsexual persons, 41 male-to-female transsexuals (MtF) and 9 female-to-male transsexuals (FtM), following a proto-colized regimen of hormone therapy for 12–24 months before and after genitoplasty. The increase in gonadotropins after surgery was greater in the FtM than in the MtF (66% vs. 50%), with the increase continuing more than one year after surgery. No variable was significantly associated with this different level of gonadotropins.  相似文献

The effects of testing condition on sexual behavior were examined in female musk shrews (Suncus murinus). Females were tested in 2 conditions, a pair test and a paced test. The pair test was similar to traditional sex test conditions in which the female and male are placed into the same chamber together until mating occurs. The paced condition allowed the female to leave the male's chamber and revisit him at will, thus "pacing" the interaction. Females displayed receptivity continuously for 14 days in both conditions. In the paced condition, females were less likely to become receptive within 30 min and mate to ejaculation. However, few additional differences were found between test conditions. Because this is the 1st experiment to use a pacing test paradigm in a species with induced ovulation, the authors speculate that the absence of pacing behavior during mating may be shown by other species that have induced ovulation.  相似文献
