Writing the Pentecostal history of Africa,Asia and Latin America

This article examines the writing of Pentecostal history and in particular, the biases and presuppositions associated with it. The problem of sources and the neglect of the important role of indigenous (‘native’) workers in the historiography of Pentecostalism in Africa, Asia and Latin America is the main focus. It refutes the idea of an American ‘Jerusalem’ and urges a rewriting of this history from the perspective of those who ‘received’ the Pentecostal missionaries from the West.     

The Movement of May 1968 and Theology in Latin America

Latin American liberation theology has almost never seen itself as an expression of or in direct relation to the international student movements of May 1968. Nevertheless, from today's perspective, one can say that what was called liberation theology was a web of relationships of many movements and events. It was undoubtedly part of the enormous worldwide movements of the 1960s, interacting with the various expressions of struggle for cultural and political liberation that manifested themselves in many different forms in different parts of the world. The same can be said about feminist liberation theology in Latin America, which emerged a few years later. Latin American feminist theology, however, unlike liberation theology, has never been concerned with making a claim of originality, nor has it struggled to be recognized as a typical Latin American way of thinking and movement. It is part of the tradition of the liberating spirit of the past and the present in its different forms, including the legacy of 1968.

Queering Black Homophobia: Black Theology as a Sexual Discourse of Transformation

Abstract

This article explores black homophobia as a co-constitutive phenomenon which harbors the fear of the loss of a black archetypal identity that can be understood as (hetero)normative. Using a method of queering black homophobia from a hetero non-normative viewpoint, an exploration of the authenticity of a liberation viewpoint that is multivocal, multidimensional, and offering an interpretation that is inclusive of identities that trouble the waters of black hetero-patriarchal hegemony will be in question as it relates to the role of the Hamitic hypothesis and those interpretations that conflate evil, sexual perversion, and human degeneration within blackness.     

Social Interactions and Life Satisfaction: Evidence from Latin America

In this paper, we seek to examine the effect of social comparisons and of social capital on life satisfaction over a sample of Latin American countries. We test if, through social influence and exposure, social capital is either an enhancer or appeaser of the effect of social comparisons of material conditions in life satisfaction. Using the Latinobarómetro Survey (2007) we find, contrary to the existing literature that, the better others perform in the material dimension, the happier the individual is. We also find that social capital is among the strongest correlates of individuals’ life satisfaction. Our findings suggest that social contacts may enhance the effect of social comparisons, which is more intense for those who perform worse in their reference group.     

International visibility of periodicals from Ireland,India, and Latin America

The present research attempts to evaluate the level of bibliographic control, and the consequent international visibility of the periodical publications of three countries in different stages of development. India, Latin America and Ireland. A search was performed on the December 1990 CD-ROM version of The Serials Directory, a commercially produced international reference source on periodical publications. A random sample of 758 periodical publications was downloaded to a local data base. Publications were sorted thematically and indicators of bibliographic control, and of international visibility were recorded. The indicators of bibliographic control and international visibility per country were contrasted. India has established for a number of years a consistent policy of bibliographic control, particularly in the case of scientific periodical publications. Latin America has followed on the other hand, a rather erratic approach to bibliographic control, and information policy. Ireland on the other hand shows a high level of bibliographic control, and the establishment of a commercial publishing industry specialized in the medical sciences. This development was not found in any of the other countries studied. Suggestions for the improvement of the international visibility and bibliographic control of periodicals from peripheral countries are presented.     

Counseling: a new priority in Latin America

Despite burgeoning enthusiasm in Latin American countries for educational guidance and vocational counseling, Latin American efforts in these areas are not often mentioned in the U.S. professional literature. This brief survey with an annotated bibliography is an effort to inform counselors about some of the recent developments in Latin America that relate to their profession. The article explains some of the underlying social, cultural, and educational conditions that have helped shape recent trends, and the authors sketch the increasing use of innovative apprenticeship training and student loan programs, which have greatly increased demands for the provision of guidance services in recent years. Despite the problem of underprofessionalization, the field of vocational guidance and counseling is growing in importance in the Latin American countries.     

Happiness, Markets, and Democracy: Latin America in Comparative Perspective

The literature on subjective well-being highlights the role of relative income differences, an issue which is particularly salient for the emerging market countries. We explore the demographic determinants of happiness in 17 countries in Latin America, as well as the effects of macroeconomic trends and attitudes about the market on happiness. We provide comparative reference with data from Russia and the United States. We find that the determinants of happiness in Latin America are remarkably similar to those in the advanced industrial countries. We also find a marked and negatively skewed perceptions gap between individuals' objective economic situations and their subjective evaluations in both Latin America and Russia. That gap, in turn, has negative effects on happiness. Inflation and unemployment have negative effects on happiness in both contexts, while pro-market attitudes and preference for democracy have positive effects.     

Ideology,modernization and politico-economic development in Latin America

The authors state that social and political processes are continuously interrelated and modify each other in a circular fashion. The economic variable seems to be the most independent and strategic one in the complex and circular causal process of contemporary history. Its importance is due to the fact that economic forces have become the means that contribute the most to the attainment of varied social and political goals. holding appointments in the Department of International Relations, Economics, Political Science and Sociology/Anthropology. He is also a Senior Research Scholar at the University of Miami’s Graduate School of International Studies. He has been a Senior Fellow at Brookings Institution and is presently a staff member there. He has published more than thirty books and over one hundred articles.     

Medical ethics in Latin America: a new interest and commitment.

Recent visits to five Latin American nations indicate that some medical professionals are eager to increase the role of bioethics in their countries. Conversations with key figures there point up similarities and differences among Latin nations, and between Latin countries and the United States, in their approaches to ethics. Opportunities exist for U.S. bioethicists to help get bioethics teaching and research off the ground in Latin America.     

Towards a Eucharistic Politics of the Black Body: Black Sexuality in the Horizons of Christian Theology

Abstract

Black bodies are perilously circumscribed by adverse dominant narratives. These narratives, when appealed to by black persons, make naming and understanding black sexuality difficult because they rest upon modern binarisms. The work of J. Kameron Carter, William Cavanaugh and Eugene Rogers demonstrates how Christian dogmatics can avoid self-defeating dualisms by situating talk of sexual desire and black bodies in the larger framework of eschatology, Christology and ecclesiology. In sum, black bodies find their meaning, liberation and flourishing in being made part of the body of Christ, true politics and model of action.     

Review Essay Ethnicity, Identity and Nationality in Latin America

This essay surveys recent scholarship on the history of ethnicity in Latin America and the Atlantic World, exploring ways in which Jewish, Japanese and Middle Eastern minorities have transacted nationhood, identity and integration. This historiography of ethnicity offers compelling paths for understanding how transnational identities are negotiated. These include the analysis of patterns of slaveholding by Jewish communities on both sides of the Atlantic and the ways in which these communities understood blackness; the use of memory in understanding experiences of immigration; the relationships between national foreign policy and domestic ethnic politics; and the extent to which the issues of negotiating identity and asserting ethnicity are shared by a variety of immigrant ethnic groups. Together, this body of literature reflects the substantial ways in which ethnic histories interplay with other facets of national histories and with the process of historical analysis.     

Nanotechnology Policies in Latin America: Risksto Health and Environment

The presence of nanotechnologies grew and spread throughout Latin America during the first decade of the 21st century. Science and Technology policies have played an important role in the performance of these new technologies. Various international institutions, such as the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the Organization of American States promoted similar Science and Technology policies, and included nanotechnology as a priority area. This article shows the role of these Science and Technology policies in the promotion of specific objectives and the gap that was left due to the failure to incorporate an examination of the potential risks to health and environment, not to mention other labor-related effects. The omission of matters relevant to workers and consumers by these institutions led to a distancing from organized civil society.     

Spiritual Winds over a Cultural Sea: Grass-roots Patterns in Latin America

Recent years have witnessed a marked interest in Pentecostal and Charismatic developments in Latin America. Pentecostal growth itself is global, and the research so far done in Latin America is beginning to provide a much more specific picture of what has been hitherto a rather imprecise image of religious grass roots development. This article passes a wide brush over a large canvass in order to represent the major features of contemporary religious changes in Latin America. No pretense is made to provide a survey, even if data or space had been available. General trends are illustrated by a selected number of studies. The author deals with Roman Catholic experience since Medell?&;#x0301;n, the tensions involved in the progressive project and increasing Pentecostal penetration of the ‘poor’ and ‘popular’ sectors of Latin American society. The impact on the more historic Protestant churches is noted, and Pentecostalism is reviewed from the perspectives of a selected number of social scientists and Pentecostal scholars. Pointers to possible future developments are suggested as well as the challenges facing the Pentecostal movement.
